Thoughts on Wikipedia Asian Month 2016[edit]

Please share you thoughts on what we going to change in 2016 edition.--AddisWang (talk) 05:15, 28 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Here are a few topics that we can elaborate:

  • Easier criteria (should be friendly to offline participants)
  • Offline activities and the format
  • Expand it to the commons, and maybe also to some other projects. (maybe ask people to participant on various Wikimedia projects to help those projects)
  • Diverse our souvenir from postcard to more

--AddisWang (talk) 15:59, 3 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

For me, I would like to see these changes for the 2016 edition:
  • Enforce usage of the judging tool, for easier statistics publishing. This too can result in real-time statistics (i.e. leaderboard during event)
  • Agree!
  • UX changes for the judging tool, so it will be easier to judge an article, i.e. I need feedback on how you use the tool!
  • I will conduct a survey, hope to get some useful feedback.
  • Adherence to the deadline of judging: maybe judge can start judging whenever they want during the event itself, providing early feedback too for the participants. This will also lessen the heavy backlog after the event ended.
  • I guess some people confused weather they should judge it right after or until the end of the event. Will make a more clear statement on that.
  • Prize distribution status update, currently people need to ask the organizer; why not instead we provide a page listing chapters and their status on this.
  • I will set up one right now.
Also, please list down feature requests of the WAM tools, so I can quickly work on it! Thank you very much.

--AddisWang (talk) 14:55, 2 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Based on what I've heard about this year's WAM:
  1. I think that we should collect feedbacks from receivers of postcards/souvenirs, besides of senders. This may be more effective to monitor if the souvenirs are sent and prevent chapters/user groups' delay on progress report.
  2. Glad to hear that Commons is being considered to join this year's WAM. I'm sure that Kenrick can work on a tool suited with this arrangement.
  3. For the tool, in last year's edition a contribution is recorded in a single line, with all the things - article title, bytes added, results, comments. I wonder if the field for comments is recorded in a line immediately beneath the line recording other details of a single contribution in the tool on this year's version - sometimes I would like to state my judging reasons extensively.
  4. I heard that in this year participation for small-scale Asian language versions of Wikipedia would be more encouraged. Then in what way? How about those with larger scale?
  5. I will discuss with fellow Wikimedian partners in HK to talk on what we can do on behalf of HK Wikimedians during our meet-up in July. Last year we regretfully unable to help for the part of souvenir.
--Spring Roll Conan ( Teahouse | Contributions ) 11:40, 23 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  1. @春卷柯南:I did a way that all inter' organizer will recceive all postcards, so I can know which chapter is delaied.
  2. We will put commons activity in pre-event, not very large scale involvement.
  3. We will using a completely differnt tool this year.
  4. Not just Asian languages, and by more encourage is bascially means we will make more effort to get small wikipedia involved.
  5. I would like to have postcards sent from HK. Thanks
--AddisWang (talk) 20:35, 23 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

For smaller projects, we would like to include in the mechanics that participants could also get a post card from the concerned community if they could write at least 5 articles on the country they prefer to write about. They may be writing in their own language but the activity can help encourage new and previously active contributors while improving their respective project.

A soft copy of Certificate of Participation (in addition to or as an alternative to the post card) can be sent to participants which they can print at home. This can save time and the cost of postage. There should have a template which can be used by the organizers. -Filipinayzd (talk) 11:46, 23 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Random postcard has two reasons: privacy reason and surprise. Which is liked by most of the postcard receiver that you will only find out where the postcard comes when you receive it.
This is a good idea, we might mail normal paper certificate to reduce cost this year instead of hard paper.--AddisWang (talk) 12:20, 23 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Delay in progress?[edit]

I would like to remind or see the progress of WAM2015:

It is nearly 4 months. If we can't complete the tasks in 4 months, it seems to me very bad. The delay would be an obstacle for future project (if any). --AntanO 14:25, 18 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

You can see it here: User:AddisWang/WAM progress. Some chapters have sent the postcards, and I have received them. Kenrick95 (talk) 15:42, 19 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I have received too. But, I wanted to know rest of the progress. --AntanO 07:43, 20 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@AntanO: We just finish the postcard stage (actually almost), we will make some annouce on ambassdors once we beautify the page. There is no competition in the Asian Month, so all these pages are just reference.--AddisWang (talk) 15:06, 22 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Prizes?[edit]

Hello! I have a question: are there any other prizes besides postcards? Thank you in advance Teemeah (talk) 18:07, 1 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Teemeah:We are considering about it but it is likely to be something cheap on both making and shipping. We don't not want to change the motivation of editing Wikipedia to physical award. Let me know if you have any suggestions on that, but it won't be like anything similar to CEE Spring.--AddisWang (talk) 21:40, 1 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the answer. I'm just asking so we can calculate accordingly with the organisation process. We might add local prizes. I understand the motivation but people do editing in their free time and for free. Writing articles on countries one might not be familiar with requires more time and energy, research than writing topics you are familiar with. We don't want only Asia enthusiasts to participate (in our wiki that's like 3 people...). Why would others want to step out of their comfort zones and try researching on countries and cultures they never met? There are a few enthusiasts who like challenging themselves for the fun, but that's not going to be a lot of people. :) Prizes are not huge anyways, it's usually small Wiki related things like mugs and badges, maybe small amount book vouchers. We need something to motivate people who are otherwise not interested in Asia. Asian wikis might be different, but since the competition is open to all other wikis, too, I think you should consider the possibility. In any case, the local chapter might be able to assist us here, I just wanted to make sure I got the info right. Thanks again! Teemeah (talk) 22:42, 1 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Teemeah:I totally agree with you on it. One major concern of not having other souvenirs is shipping itself cost too much comparing with the actual value of souvenirs. I'm totally fine there is some other award on local wiki, especially it's Wikimedia souvenirs. But we as the international team should not involve too much otherwise other Wikipedia communities will not happy with that, as well as the rules will be complicated and moving away from our original thoughts of keeping it simple. If there is limited assistance from local chapter, you may apply the fund from Rapid Grants from Wikimedia Foundation.--AddisWang (talk) 00:57, 2 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
As we discussed above, we are thinking to mail all ambassadors the certificate, a copy of it's hard paper certificate. We will add some stickers, bookmarks and maybe something else that fit into an envelop.--AddisWang (talk) 01:01, 2 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the info! Teemeah (talk) 08:38, 2 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
AddisWang, I think, Wikimedia Shop can send T-shirts to Ambassadors for free. What do you think? --Lingveno (talk) 13:18, 2 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Lingveno:Yeah, actually I just add that into grant proposal yesterday. But not everyone, just top 2 contributors globally.--AddisWang (talk) 14:06, 2 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia T-shirts should also be awarded and mediawiki or commons press cards for the users who intend to take pictures for the relevant articles, Suppose if I go any place and want to take a picture of it it might be governmental monument or such like that and some one among the authorities ask me why I am taking pictures then if we had a press card from wikimedia foundation or media wiki or commons then we can easily take pictures. please think about it , I was obsessed this idea.Jogi don (talk) 02:13, 3 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
This is more like a request to Wikimedia Foundation, although I don't think they have any of that. Not really capibile by WAM.--AddisWang (talk) 17:38, 3 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Plz do not forget to notify me when WAM-16 starts.. Also help me to get admin rights on Sdwiki, So I could create necessary templates and other tasks easitly, I was given Sysop rights for Six months from December 20, 2015 to June 20, 2016. I have requested for extension but did get anything yet, Sdwiki seriously needs more admins, probably me, One can judge my contribution on sdwiki during August 2015 to June 2016.Jogi don (talk) 02:22, 3 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
1) I think that it's sure that we will notify you on this. 2) Don't know much on sdwp, every Wikipedia versions are independent. I don't know if you needs a sysop right to create templates or execute tasks necessary for WAM in sdwp. Even though I'm sorry that I can't help with this.--Spring Roll Conan ( Teahouse | Contributions ) 11:01, 8 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I think it is unfair[edit]

When a new article is created some article creators at ease with translating articles directly from English Wikipedia to local language without making much effort, But some creates article as their own creativity with the Knowledge. We observed this during the last WAM2015 .Is it fair to measure both equally for the contest? On what ground the both participants are equal to the contest?--Rsekanayake (talk) 19:05, 24 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I don't think it is unfair. Content is what matters and different editors add content in different manners. --Lord Bumbury (talk) 07:49, 27 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I would like to ask if anyone could please change the year, for WAM 2016? Thank you. Ravit (talk) 20:28, 6 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Asian 10,000 Challenge[edit]

Hi, started this based on the UK one and Africa. If I'd known about Asian month earlier I could have planned something to help more, but I've tried to drum up interest on the challenge page. I hope this will compliment your Month and hope people here will join and contribute to it long term and make it a permanent drive. The UK and Africa ones have been doing very well, the Africa one has produced well over 400 articles in just a few weeks.Dr. Blofeld (talk) 13:55, 13 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Dr. Blofeld Great, we can work together on the project. --AddisWang (talk) 17:00, 17 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Sign up in the participants section and begin contributing everybody! The current The African Destubathon which produced 250 articles in 3 days could quite easily be done for Asia sometime. Will try to help you max output for Asian month and beyond! :-)Dr. Blofeld (talk) 18:24, 19 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

OAuth tool[edit]

I've noticed that the OAuth tool doesn't differentiate between articles created in a sandbox and articles create in the mainspace. I just created an article, en:George Wall (planter) and it was declined as I created the article in draft in my sandbox in October. It clearly needs to be adjusted to be able to determine the difference between a draft and an actual article. Dan arndt (talk) 07:21, 1 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion continued at User talk:Ле Лой--AddisWang (talk) 14:23, 1 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Userbox?[edit]

If there is one, I suggest putting it in the Social section below the Twitter icon. See the first bullet point under Wikimedia Cuteness Association § Participate for an example of instructions that worked well to draw me in. I like how they showed the userbox but also put right next to it something I could quickly copy and paste to my user page.

Best wishes! —Geekdiva (talk) 22:02, 7 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Geekdiva: Good point! Will do. Thanks!--AddisWang (talk) 23:05, 7 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Organisation[edit]

Hi,

I am apart of an NGo which has its own website with articles on health, healing, yoga & meditation. Can we post articles as an organisation and not under and individual name?

Kannada Wikipedia Event page Link[edit]

Kannada Wikipedia link is given to previous year's event page. That should be changed to current year event page. Same problem in 'Results' page also. --Vikas Hegde (talk) 14:28, 11 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Vikashegde:: Thanks pointing it out. Can you provide a link to this year page?--AddisWang (talk) 15:48, 12 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@AddisWang:: Here it is ವಿಕಿಪೀಡಿಯ:ಸಂಪಾದನೋತ್ಸವಗಳು/ವಿಕಿಪೀಡಿಯ ಏಷ್ಯನ್ ತಿಂಗಳು ೨೦೧೬
To be done in 'Results' page also --Vikas Hegde (talk) 13:49, 17 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Done.--AddisWang (talk) 16:16, 17 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Please allow submission of draft articles to the WAM tool[edit]

I was unable to submit a draft-space article to the tool. Being a rookie contributor, I'd like my articles to be reviewed before they are in article-space. I contacted Le Loy (https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User_talk:%D0%9B%D0%B5_%D0%9B%D0%BE%D0%B9#Unable_to_add_draft_article_using_WAM_tool) and he said the drafts could be allowed if the organizers reached consensus on this. Matrix1919 (talk) 03:25, 24 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Matrix1919: You can ask organizer to take a look before you move to the main space if they don't mind. But we can only allow articles in main space to be submitted in the judging tool to avoid unnecessary abuse and reduce workload for organizers. Thanks for contributing Wikipedia Asian Month!--AddisWang (talk) 08:09, 24 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@AddisWang: Thank you for the speedy response! And, thank you for organizing Wikipedia Asian Month!
Pardon my ignorance, but I don't understand how draft-space articles would lead to abuse and additional workload for the organisers. Matrix1919 (talk) 16:12, 24 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

How can I move the content from the draft page to the namespace?[edit]

Hello, thank you for your hard work to have this project succeed, and I'm sure we are moving fast toward the goal with a few days to go. Could you help me, that could I move the content of my draft on draft space to namespace? I thought I've read a "Rule" written somewhere (sorry should have bookmarked) and under the second dagger, it says:

Q: Will my edit before November be counted from editing draft page or user subpage?
A: No. However, you can move the content from the draft page instead of moving the draft page.

I am afraid I might infringe Copy+Paste rule of Wikipedia anyway. Appreciate your advice. :) --Omotecho (talk) 09:12, 24 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Creating article by clearing (former) redirect[edit]

One of the ja.wp participants cleared a redirect and made a whole new article (ja:サティヤーグラハ). As the first (and the second) history of the article is a redirect by another user, the judging tool can not recognize the essential creator of the article. Clearing a redirect and writing a whole new article shall be counted in light of the spirit of this editathon. As an organizer, I will count it as one of the contributions. --Takot (talk) 13:52, 24 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Takot, I can add the article manually on the Akiyama(tentative)'s behalf. Should I? Le Loy 10:00, 25 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Ле Лой, it would be very helpful! Would you mind if I ask you to add two more such articles: ja:MIKTA and ja:エルサレム攻囲戦 (紀元前37年)? Those are listed but not registered with the tool. --Takot (talk) 14:22, 25 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Takot, I have added MIKTA on behalf of WikiNakamura, but I think you should know that user てれびくん added quite a lot of text to the article (see ja:「MIKTA」の変更履歴).
エルサレム攻囲戦 (紀元前37年) was added on behalf of 重陽 and サティヤーグラハ on behalf of Akiyama(tentative). If you need to add some other articles, please let me know. Le Loy 22:25, 25 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Really really appreciated! As for MIKTA, I intended to decline it, and wanted it managed under the tool for an administrative purpose. Thank you very much for your kind help! :-) --Takot (talk) 02:04, 26 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

WikiUral Сompetition[edit]

Dear Sirs!

We are created page WikiUral Competition and Wikimedia RU have plans for co-branding with Wikipedia Asian Month (as discussed on the WikiUral Talk wikimedia.ru page ). Good? Please add this information in your page:

Wiki-partner

WikiUral Competition. Come join us. The 1st and 2nd round.

Thank you for your cooperation! Best Regards — Niklitov (talk) 14:53, 29 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Niklitov: Sounds interesting! What do you mean by saying co-branding with Wikipedia Asian Month? Like a subproject (sub-contest) of WAM? --AddisWang (talk) 02:12, 30 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Dear @AddisWang: ninhao! Right, sub-contest! We invite your jury in WikiUral Competition! Competition multilanguages pages can be created here, for example Вики-Урал/zh, ect. — Niklitov (talk) 08:26, 30 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Niklitov: This year's WAM is almost end so I'm not sure if much thing ca be done by WAM. But we can have more fun next year, like having postcards sent from Ural etc.--AddisWang (talk) 16:21, 30 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
尊敬 @AddisWang: 早上好! WikiUral Competition is next contest (just one time), part of Wikipedia Asian Month 2016. The contest is held until July 2017. We've added a link to the Wikipedia Asian Month pages, right? — Niklitov (talk) 08:57, 1 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Niklitov: I see your point. For Asian Month, it would be better to include different contests of different topics during the Asian Month (each November). For example, we just had Wikipedia Asian Women Month sub contest on English Wikipedia. I guess here are something we can do, but feel free if you have more idea.
  • Add a link of WikiUral at Wikipedia Asian Month page, section "Extended event" (events that will help continue contributing to Asian topics beyond WAM)
  • Considering have a Wikipedia Ural Month in Next November alone with Wikipedia Asian Month 2017, and maybe give special prize (a postcard from Ural) to Wikipedians who wrote four articles about Ural.
  • Beyond that, I can send a MassMessage to WAM organizers to let them aware the event in case they want to join.--AddisWang (talk) 02:07, 2 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Just saw the link you've add on WAM page, I'm ok with it.--AddisWang (talk) 02:12, 2 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

2017 edition[edit]

Is there a plan for repeating again the challenge in 2017? We at Amical Wikimedia are scheduling our program and would like to know, just to adapt our calendar in order to give enough attention to this challenge again (we loved it). Best! --Kippelboy (talk) 11:29, 3 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Kippelboy Yes we will do it again and glad we will have Amical Wikimedia be part of it again!--AddisWang (talk) 06:35, 7 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Great!!! :-)--Kippelboy (talk) 13:57, 9 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
AddisWang, is it gonna be on November again? Because in Azerbaijani Wikipedia we have already scheduled a different theme for that month and it is only going to be changed if the Asian Month 2017 is announced to be on November. --Мурад 97 (talk) 11:59, 6 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Awesome!, please let me know! --Rochelimit (talk) 17:01, 20 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Мурад 97 yes. Asian Month will be held in this November. Sorry for the late reply.--AddisWang (talk) 13:58, 30 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
AddisWang, thank you. We will discuss it on AzViki then. --Мурад 97 (talk) 14:12, 30 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

World Women Contest[edit]

Hi there. I'm planning on running this world contestwith around $4000 prize money in November to coincide with Asian month. Though it will be for anywhere I anticipate it might contribute to your own effort and we see even more Asian women bios done. I'm having trouble finding somebody to code a bot, all I need is a bot to check article length and no unsourced paragraphs. I've been informed that you have something operating for the Asian month entries. Is there any chance you can help me?Dr. Blofeld (talk) 21:18, 6 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Dr. Blofeld, if you decide to use Fountain, it will automatically count the articles' size (only text, no tables, no lists) in words, bytes or characters. Le Loy 02:02, 16 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
