Tools Development

Just to let you all know that the tool development (for tracking user progress and judging) is on-going at GitHub and can be previewed at Tool Labs. Kenrick95 (talk) 04:21, 2 September 2015 (UTC)

Cool! It looks great!--AddisWang (talk) 13:46, 4 September 2015 (UTC)
@Kenrick95: Tried to used it, but the user list appears with nothing (previous editors also disappeared.) Maybe it is a bug that my username is in other scripts other than the Latin alphabets, and when I add my username, it results in failure. --Spring Roll Conan ( Teahouse | Contributions ) 11:16, 7 September 2015 (UTC)
Ah, I'm sorry about that, the tool require the whole Participant list page to be formatted as a valid JSON to get it working. Now it's okay already. I'll think of some way to cope with users that do not understand JSON. Kenrick95 (talk) 14:17, 7 September 2015 (UTC)
Hi, Kenrick95, Thanks for the tool. It is really great. -- Bodhisattwa (talk) 11:37, 12 September 2015 (UTC)

Please note that: current tool configuration shows your new article contributed from 1 JanuaryOctober 2015 till now, during the event itself, it will be configured to show only new articles from 1 November 2015 to 30 November 2015 (all times in UTC). Kenrick95 (talk) 13:39, 19 September 2015 (UTC)

How to use

The tool has two functionalities:

  1. Checking participants' progress and status of their articles
  2. Judging participants' articles.

Check progress

  1. At the home of the tool, on the navigation bar at the top, click "Check progress".
  2. Select the wiki
  3. Select the user
  4. Now you will see the article list of the selected user on the selected wiki created during the period of Wikipedia Asian Month. You can see the:
    • Date and time that article is created
    • Byte count of the article (page size)
    • Approximate word count
If you want to know the approximate word count of a particular article, click "check word count"
If you want to know the approximate word count of all pending articles, at the table header, click "check word count for pending articles"
    • Status of the article (as given by the judge)
If judge result is not available, it will be "no" for those articles with byte count less than 3,500 and "pending" for the rest of the unjudged articles

Judging articles

  1. At the home of the tool, on the navigation bar at the top, click "Judging".
  2. Authorize the OAuth process
  3. Select the wiki
  4. Select the user
  5. Now you will see the article list of the selected user on the selected wiki created during the period of Wikipedia Asian Month. You can see the details as seen in "Check progress" section above.
  6. Click "Judge" on articles you want to judge
  7. Now you will see a page containing the article in mobile-version Wikipedia, with some helper statistics such as:
    • Byte count
    • Approximate word count
and also a three-button group (yes, no, and pending) at the right side of the page.
If previously the article has been judged, the current status/verdict will be highlighted as if it was pressed (active)
  8. Select your verdict to be given to the article (yes, no, or pending)
  9. Done

I'm sorry, Shizhao, but Glaisher had removed 'UA' from the list of countries (on request) and what you've done is removing 'uk' from the list of languages. It was actually ok to have Ukrainian among banner languages -- Ата (talk) 15:51, 26 October 2015 (UTC)

After a study on the way to get into the translation interface, I've just finished a banner translation for Vietnamese and some modifications on the page on viwp (my Vietnamese proficiency is not very good though, and I can't help to organize the event there). Proofreading will be appreciated.--Spring Roll Conan ( Teahouse | Contributions ) 11:28, 31 October 2015 (UTC)

Whoever can change it, WAM_2015_11_soon (soon end) isn't in proper English. Suggest this wording: The Wikipedia Asian Month is ending soon, please report your contributions before it ends. Brianhe (talk) 09:21, 24 November 2015 (UTC)

Rules: Size/length

A rule says The article should be at least 3,500 bytes and around 300 words. It is better to say whether it includes or excludes of infoboxes, categories, references, notes, tables, etc. --AntanO 07:28, 23 October 2015 (UTC)

For me, (as the one who writes the draft of the rule) 3,500 bytes is the size of the page as reported by the MediaWiki software, and 300 words counts only the text of the article (i.e. excluding articles, categories, references, tables, etc); the purpose of this is to prevent articles with very short length (i.e. one-liner) or poor quality. In the end, it will be up to the organizers' interpretation, but keep in mind the rules are meant to achieve the objective of having articles that have decent quality. Kenrick95 (talk) 15:51, 23 October 2015 (UTC)
BTW bytes is a bad metric for multilingual contest, imho. E.g. Cyrillic chars take two times more bytes than Latin. I'm not sure about Han characters. Do they take even more? --Base (talk) 16:38, 23 October 2015 (UTC)
So, from the discussions above, it is clear that local organizers can adapt those metrics to their own languages. Let me reiterate the purpose of having these metrics again: to have article of a decent quality in Wikipedia of your language. Local organizers really need to adapt the rules to their Wikipedia since we realize that it is impossible to have one rule to rule them all. Kenrick95 (talk) 01:15, 24 October 2015 (UTC)
I guess we need to make a more clear statement on the page to say the standard is able to be adjusted--AddisWang (talk) 01:25, 24 October 2015 (UTC)

If an article's size is more than 3500 bytes but apprx. word count is less than 300 words, will it count? -দিব্য দত্ত (talk) 13:07, 18 November 2015 (UTC)

@দিব্য দত্ত:No. But if there are 290 words or very close to 300, you can decide to count it or nor.--AddisWang (talk) 14:38, 18 November 2015 (UTC)

Organizers

Can organizers participate? It can be listed in rules. --AntanO 08:12, 23 October 2015 (UTC)

Per above discussions, organizers can participate. Kenrick95 (talk) 15:51, 23 October 2015 (UTC)
Let's put "Organizer's contribution need to be checked by other organizers"--AddisWang (talk) 16:37, 23 October 2015 (UTC)

Lists

May I ask you what is wrong with lists so that they are not allowed to participate? I was translating List of national parks of Japan into Ukrainian this spring. It took me several days to do it (well and actually I decided to put Quasi-National ones into another list) so I don't think it is easier than translating a normal article. --Base (talk) 16:49, 23 October 2015 (UTC)

@Base:Your work is amazing. I agree with your point. The rules we set up seems ignore it, and obviously even the list is allowed it hard to pass the 300 words criteria as well. I proposed that we should change the rule that the list is allowed and instead of using 3500 Byte and 350 words, we can use 7000 Byte to ensure the quality. Thus, "If the article is a list, it need to be at least 7,000 bytes but no requirement on words". Let's see what others' opinion. @Kenrick95:--AddisWang (talk) 20:37, 23 October 2015 (UTC)
@AddisWang: Once upon a time in Indonesian Wikipedia, when doing a similar edit-a-thon with minimum number of words requirement, a user has found a "loophole" and (the judges, including me, felt that) that user is exploiting it, since there are many list that require no or minimum effort of translation (i.e. translating the short opening paragraph and then find-and-replace the other parts to localize the article). Let's take one example: en:List of Governors-General of the Dutch East Indies, this list is clearly passes all of the requirements, but these kind of contributions will lead to other people doing the same kind of thing (since it is really easy) and look unfair to the other participants as well. That time the judges, after receiving a complaint from one of the participants, decided to disqualify that user. After that "incident", we proposed a new rule to quality some kinds of list but it seemed to the community to be too complex to understand and for the sake of simplicity, all list are not qualified. Kenrick95 (talk) 01:26, 24 October 2015 (UTC)
It is a list dilemma! So I feel we should find out some kind of easy rules to include some good works done by Base can be counted but those simple lists are not. One thing come into my mind, is if a list regonized as Wikipedia:Featured lists, it can be counted. But this only applied to a few Wikipedias and seems a very high standard. What Else can me use?--AddisWang (talk) 01:39, 24 October 2015 (UTC)
As a former judge of the Campaign in zhwp, simple lists are accepted as submissions (points given were as same as ordinary articles). We accept articles with factual errors and simple format as submissions as long as they met the requirements, so why not simple lists. However, we do prohibit users from creating articles by (semi-)automatic method and submitting them in the progress page (not everyone have the ability/rights to do so, and doing so is unfair to others; if so, no marks given). Of course, as I said before, one varies from others.--Spring Roll Conan ( Teahouse | Contributions ) 08:28, 24 October 2015 (UTC)
(semi-)automatic articles are ok as long as these can fulfill the standard. People can help the community understand each other more should be welcomed, this is not a competition.--AddisWang (talk) 16:31, 24 October 2015 (UTC)

In Japanese Wikipedia, there is a problem. Which link should we use in section "International Community"?

  1. link to "Wikipedia:Wikipedia Asian Month"
  2. link to Main page

Original ( Japanese )

どちらのリンクを"International Community"のセクションで使用するべきでしょうか。

  1. "Wikipedia:Wikipedia Asian Month"へのリンク
  2. メインページへのリンク

--Katota1114 (talk) 07:55, 28 October 2015 (UTC)

The problem is about the local page, right? If so, in Chinese version's practice, when a local page dedicated for WAM exists in a Wikipedia version, then we use the former as the link for that version. If there's no such a page, the latter is used. Nevertheless, though in zhwp I've not met any resistance to do in this way, it's up to local organizers whether they adopt this convention or not. --Spring Roll Conan ( Teahouse | Contributions ) 10:23, 28 October 2015 (UTC)
Translated by Katota1114 (talk)

Unlike the Chinese Wikipedia, the Tagalog Wikipedia's practice is to only link to Wikipedias with project pages. Projects without project pages are presumed to not be participating in the project. --Sky Harbor (talk) 15:47, 29 October 2015 (UTC)

@Саган and Рөстәм Нурыев:, if you would also like to expand stub articles. Here is the rule that you can adopt from English Wikipedia. "You can also expand an existing article. The original size of the article needs to be less than 4000 Bytes. You need to expand this article to 5 times of its original size, as well as at least 4000 Bytes and 300 English words for expansion. Only the edits made during the event will be counted."--AddisWang (talk) 16:24, 1 November 2015 (UTC)
BTW, five times expansion is not necessary.--AddisWang (talk) 16:28, 1 November 2015 (UTC)

Now you can manually enters an article to the tool. [2] The only limitation is that the inputted article title should exactly match the one in local Wikipedia, and here you should use space instead of underscore. (for example: [3]) Kenrick95 (talk) 12:29, 6 November 2015 (UTC)

Just some suggestions

Why not holding the similar events such as "European Month" and "American Month" and so on? Isn't it not fair to European and American people if Wikipedia only holds "Asian Month" (Though I AM an Asian people)?--№.N (talk) 02:36, 5 December 2015 (UTC)

@Liu116:Anyone can freely launch any event, and some Asian Wikipedians decided to run this event. As said the European Month or similar thing can be hold, but imagine there are five or seven continent months every 12 months, this will make any of these event meaningless, so I don't in favor in running such kind of event.--AddisWang (talk) 03:19, 5 December 2015 (UTC)
I knew you would say that. What about that: For example, In 2015, Wikipedia holds Asian Month. But in 2016, Wikipedia will hold another event for Europe. And then in the 2017, the event for America (both North and South) will be held. Then in 2018, back to Asia. As for Africa and Oceania, it depends on number of users who wants to participate this event. Of course, people from the European countries can be the organizers of the event for Europe (if they want) and people from American countries can run the event for America (if they want). I don't know what will the wikipedians from other continents think of my suggestion. Anyway, I'm just throwing out a suggestion, you can choose either accept or not accept it, or improve the scheme.--№.N (talk) 05:27, 5 December 2015 (UTC)
@Liu116:As the initiative for bring the Asian communities together and improve the understanding among Asian communities, I guess most of us still willing to hold the Asian Month in next year. So Asian Month is not exactly a Edit-a-thon or article competition. CEE group also has similar projects.--AddisWang (talk) 06:57, 5 December 2015 (UTC)
@Liu116: There are other such ideas. The coolest of them all is the wildly successful and even more so loved Wikimedia CEE Spring 2015. Only in Bulgarian there were as many new articles, as the number of active Wikipedians (>5 edits per month). --Lord Bumbury (talk) 19:23, 5 December 2015 (UTC)
Well, now that you said something about CEE, I have nothing to say (I said, just some suggestions). Anyway, thanks for the reply. --№.N (talk) 00:19, 6 December 2015 (UTC)

My Expanded page was not included in the WAM count. Why?

I have created four pages and expanded one by 5x in WAM. But the expanded page (Khpal Kor Foundation), so for not included in the count. What is the problem? Zarghun11 (talk) 14:46, 5 December 2015 (UTC)

The judging tool only count articles that are created by a participant. Expanded articles are not included. That means you have to list the article in the local page or ask an organizer to include such article as your contributions in the judging tool and give verdict to it (they can do so when ordinary users can't). --Spring Roll Conan ( Teahouse | Contributions ) 15:07, 5 December 2015 (UTC)

@Zarghun11:Which language version of Wikipedia are you participating in?--AddisWang (talk) 01:37, 6 December 2015 (UTC)
