Template talk:H:1

From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Purpose[edit]

For project-specific content on help pages, see MediaWiki help policy.

Deprecated[edit]

template:H:1 (edittalklinkshistory) got no traction, and its one use for template:H:Interwiki linking (edittalklinkshistory) confused at least me. Checking the links I found that H:1 was used nowhere else (except from its documentation in the handbook), therefore I've removed it there. See the talk pages at H:Interwiki linking and Interwiki linking for the details. -- Omniplex (w:t) 13:15, 5 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

P.S.: Besides H:1 and H:l wasn't a good idea, template:H:l (edittalklinkshistory) is more useful.

The idea was to keep project-specific material separate, and moreover, to keep Wikimedia-specific material separate. However, perhaps it can be argued that the Wikimedia examples are so important that they are useful even in a general MediaWiki help page.--Patrick 22:58, 5 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Ugh, looking only for links I missed that occurence. There are two problems, one was simply L as in h:l vs. 1 as in h:1, hard to read (and the L idea is IMO more convincing).
The other problem is the interface, it took me some time to get rid of {{H:new}} somewhere yesterday, because it had odd side effects in conjunction with a navigation box floating right (don't ask). There were some other examples where help pages used templates not available on Wikipedia - or worse available but unrelated. Last example {{Instructions}} and another template used on Help:Inputbox, I replaced them by MediaWiki messages (good enough for the inputbox examples). A small interface wrt used templates is good, and apparently nobody used h:1 except from educational purposes (and for Interwiki linking, where I substituted it). Folks elsewhere need it as easy as possible, otherwise they start to do stupid things, edit the copies from Meta, or even vote to delete them like Wikibooks. I'll replace H:1 by H:l in the page linked by you.
Maybe add template:H:new (edittalklinkshistory) to the core set if you think it's necessary. (?) -- Omniplex (w:t) 15:48, 6 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]
