Thematic Edit-a-thon at Yashawantrao Chavan Institute of Science, Satara

Goal

The goal of Wikipedia Workshop is to build resources in the field of Environment and Local Biodiversity on Marathi Wikipedia and equip its participants with the process of contributing to Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects. Satara district is one of the biodiversity rich areas of the Western Ghats. It has very popular hill station like Mahabaleshwar and Unesco heritage site Kaas plateau. Many organisations are working on biodiversity and tourism aspects in the district. Rayat Shikshan Sanstha, 100 year old organisation has the biggest network of schools and colleges across Maharashtra with headquarter in Satara. It's 40 year old Yashawantrao Chavan Institute of Science is actively working on these issues. The college management and local environmental group Drongo have taken initiative to organise this thematic workshop.
Total 23 members from various organisations active in environment sector participated in the workshop.

Objectives

1. To introduce Wikipedia as a dynamic knowledge repository open for contribution
2. To build Marathi Wikipedia Community through capacity building of new editors
3. To have an open interaction on strengths of Wikimedia projects and their application in local issues
4. To spread the awareness of Wikipedia as a powerful tool in academics and research
5. To develop articles on biodiversity & environment related issues
