Tulu Wikipedia was officially launched as a full Wikipedia project on 6 August 2016 during the WikiConference India 2016 held in Chandigarh. It became the 23rd Indian-language Wikipedia after spending about eight years in the Wikimedia Incubator.
The project was first initiated in 2008 in the Wikimedia Incubator. After a period of limited activity, efforts by community members, educational institutions, and Wikimedia volunteers helped revive the project from 2014 onwards through workshops, edit-a-thons, and outreach programs. These efforts ultimately led to the successful launch of Tulu Wikipedia in 2016.
It is maintained entirely by volunteer contributors who create, improve, and review articles. Over the years, Tulu Wikipedia has grown steadily through the efforts of Wikimedians, students, educators, and language enthusiasts committed to promoting free knowledge in Tulu. As Tulu Wikipedia celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2026, it stands as a significant milestone in the digital preservation and promotion of the Tulu language and culture, while continuing to inspire new generations of contributors to participate in the Wikimedia movement.

[edit]Tulu Wikipedia completes ten years of service in documenting, preserving, and disseminating knowledge related to the Tulu language, culture, folklore, literature, history, and heritage. During the last decade, volunteers from the Tulu Wikimedia community have created thousands of articles and multimedia resources, making Tulu knowledge accessible to a global audience. The 10th Anniversary Celebration aims to commemorate this milestone by bringing together community members, scholars, students, cultural practitioners, media representatives, and Wikimedians from neighboring language communities. The programme will also highlight the cultural significance of Aati Month, one of the most important traditional periods in Tulunadu.
