This is the Annual Report for the 2024—2025 fiscal year for the Tyap Wikimedians User Group. It details the activities of the group from 8 July 2024 (the day and month when the user group was recognized) to 8 July 2025. It should also be noted that due to the change in GSF cycle from June to July to January to December, this report will be 18-month long, and not 12-month long as usual. It will span from July 2024 to December 2025, instead.
Five landmark achievements of the group in this fiscal year include the first Tyap Wiki Bootcamp, the user group's first Wiktionary collaborative project with the WikiWoordenboek team of the Wikimedia Nederlands, the Jju Wikipedia Outreach being the first new Wikipedia project by the group outside of the Tyap Wikipedia, the first Wiki Audio Walk outreach by the Tyap Wikimedians User Group, and the first Mentor Me! program session ever held to mentor editors in the Movement on editing Wikimedia projects.
The Tyap Wikimedians User Group held its 1st Community Meeting virtually. This was earlier scheduled to be on Google Meet, but later switched to a Telegram call. It is basically a discussion between the leadership of the group (including those of the Zaria hub and newly founded Atyapland hub), brainstorming on ways to move the group forward.
Goal: To discuss the learnings during the Atyapland WikiOutreach; to introduce the newly crowned ambassador for the Tyap Wikimedians User Group, Nathaniel Yohanna Bonat "Afaityap", a skit maker; to discuss how to make the group more visible online; and how to get others involved in our projects.
Duration: 6 July 2024.
Attendance: At least six participants were present.
The Tyap Wikimedians User Group held its 2nd Community Meeting virtually via Telegram video call. The choice of Telegram over Google Meet was made to curb the network-related issues.
Goal: To discuss the learning from the experience in the previous encounter, the emergence of an ambassador for the group (Afaiatyap), and the promotion of the group's activities on social media.
Duration: 10 August 2024.
Attendance: At least eight participants were present.
Statement of the Problem: High level of illiteracy in the Tyap-speaking community, and the need to train new and retrain existing Wikimedia editors to contribute to Tyap-based projects.
Goal: To train participants to become literate in Tyap within the period, as well as contribute to the two Tyap Wikimedia projects (the Tyap Wikipedia and Tyap Wiktionary), Wikimedia Commons, and Wikidata.
Duration: This was a seven-day-long event held between 19-25 August 2024.
Results: About 80 new articles were created in the Tyap Wikipedia (+ 9 more after the event during the post-event edit-a-thon; 700 articles improved), 173 new entries created in the Tyap Wiktionary, about 251 files uploaded on Wikimedia Commons (with about 78), and at least 341 items edited (1,012 improved) on Wikidata.
The Tyap Wikimedians User Group held its 3rd Community Meeting virtually via Telegram video call.
Goal: To discuss project learnings and results in the group's events in 2024, from the Atyapland WikiOutreach in June to the Tyap Wiki Bootcamp Season 1 in August; and what to expect in the upcoming Jju Wikipedia Outreach later in September 2024.
This is the first Wikipedia project the Tyap Wikimedians User Group is kickstarting after the Tyap Wikipedia project's approval in 2023, the Jju Wikipedia Outreach.
Statement of the Problem: The Tyap language is one of the about 66 Plateau languages and one of the over 100 Nenzit (Platoid) languages, of which only Tyap has a Wikipedia. There are two Tyapic languages. Tyap and Jju. It will be awesome to begin a project in both Tyapic languages and expand to other Nenzit languages.
Goal: To create a new Wikipedia project, to recruit new editors to edit Wikimedia projects, to create awareness about Wikimedia projects, and to create a Jju Wikimedia community.
Duration: 21-22 and 28-29 September 2024.
Attendance: Jju speakers within and around Southern Kaduna. There were at least 21 participants, with about 10 new editors registered.
The Tyap Wikimedians User Group held its 4th Community Meeting virtually via Telegram video call.
Goal: To discuss project learnings and results in the group's outing during the Jju Wikipedia Outreach in September, and what to expect in the upcoming Tyap Wikimedians Celebrate Wikidata @12 with Training and Data-a-thon.
Duration: 5 October 2025.
Attendance: At least seven participants were present.
The Tyap Wikimedians Community, for the second time, joined the Wiki Loves Monuments photo contest, and contributed a lot of images, out of which only 74 survived. The rest were deleted from Wikimedia Commons due to concerns about the Freedom of Panorama limitation. This program was not part of the community's annual programs, but editors went out to represent the region at their own expense.
Statement of the Problem: Several monuments in the Kaduna area, especially Southern Kaduna, have been left out of the digital space.
Goal: To snap images of monuments and landmarks for upload to Wikimedia Commons for easy and open access for all.
The 1st Leadership Retreat program of the hub leaders of the Tyap Wikimedians communities of Zaria and Atyapland, and the Jju Wikimedians community was prepared to develop a common understanding about the mission and vision of the group and how to bring them into accomplishment.
Statement of the Problem: Decline in activities, need to understand what we are, where we are, and where we are going.
Goal: To understand the peculiar challenges faced by the different communities and how to tackle them.
Tyap Wikimedians Celebrate Wikidata @12 with Training and Data-a-thon
Instead of just celebrating Wikidata's 12th birthday, the Tyap Wikimedians opted to add a data-a-thon to the event. Unlike the past two Wikidata birthday celebrations done by the community, the community's annual meetup was separated from this event to be held on a later date in the year. For the first two days (2-3 November), it was an in-person event, and from the third day to the last day of the month (3-30 November), editors were expected to add items on Wikidata, especially those related to the Southern Kaduna area and the Nigerian Middle Belt. Also, for the first time, Wikidata lexemes of the Tyap language were to be added to Wikidata.
Statement of the Problem: Missing items related to Southern Kaduna and the Nigerian Middle Belt, unlike Tyap Wikipedia articles to Wikidata, and missing Tyap language lexemes on Wikidata.
Goal: Create as many Wikidata items, link Tyap Wikipedia articles to Wikidata, and create as many Tyap language lexemes on Wikidata as possible by the 30th day of November 2024.
Duration: 2-30 November 2024.
Attendance: About 30 participants participated in the event.
Result: At least 810 Wikidata items and lexemes, 27 articles in the Tyap Wikipedia, 3 articles in the English Wikipedia, 6 pages on Meta-Wiki were created, and 752 files were uploaded on Commons. (result from the Outreach Dashboard).
The Tyap Wikimedians User Group held its 5th Community Meeting virtually via Telegram video call.
Goal: To discuss the Tyap Wikimedians Celebrate Wikidata @12 with Training and Data-a-thon event, which as of then, was ongoing, and the future meet-up on December 7, 2024.
Duration: 16 November 2025.
Attendance: At least 10 participants were present.
The Tyap Community End-of-the-Year Meetup 2024 would be the first event, purposely created by the community to meet with one another, and award prizes to outstanding community volunteers in events organized by it.
The Tyap Wikimedians User Group held its 7th Community Meeting virtually via Telegram video call.
Goal: To discuss the past year's achievements and what is to be expected in the new year, most especially the Wiktionary collaborative project, the Wiki Loves Folklore, and Wiki Loves Africa campaigns.
Statement of the Problem: Absence of many words of Dutch origin in the Swánga̱lyiatwuki (Tyap Wiktionary) and of Tyap origin in the WikiWoordenboek (Dutch Wiktionary), the need to improve the quality of entries in the Swánga̱lyiatwuki, need to create more standard templates and modules for the Swánga̱lyiatwuki, and the need to create more entries in the Swánga̱lyiatwuki. The Swánga̱lyiatwuki is a relatively new project, which has much to learn from a developed Wiktionary like the WikiWoordenboek.
Goal: Begin a pilot project to run for two months in which Dutch entries would be created in the Swánga̱lyiatwuki, and Tyap entries would be added in the WikiWoordenboek; improve the looks of entries in the Swánga̱lyiatwuki; create templates for audio, hyphenation, translation, and others, and link species entries to corresponding Wikispecies pages.
Duration: January 11 – February 28, 2025.
Attendance: 8 editors registered for the project, but many fewer than that actually participated.
Result: About 71 files were uploaded on Commons, about 115 entries of Dutch origin were added to the Swánga̱lyiatwuki, 177 entries of Tyap origin were added to the WikiWoordenboek, a total of 334 pages were created in this pilot project in the Swánga̱lyiatwuki. A comprehensive summary of the overall project was published as a diff post on August 30, 2025, titled Swánga̱lyiatwuki-WikiWoordenboek Wiktionary Editing Projects.
Statement of the Problem: The Nigerian Middle Belt has the highest number of ethnic groups and cultures in Nigeria, yet these cultures are hardly found in the open source environment like Wikimedia Commons.
Goal: To capture quality images of various cultures using smartphones and digital cameras for upload on Wikimedia Commons.
Result: About 2,311 images were uploaded, and results were shared on our social media handles. Detailed uploads per uploader available on Toolforge here.
Like the Wiki Loves Folklore event, the Feminizi̠m ma̠ng Tashikum (Feminism and Folklore) 2025 event would be the first time the Tyap Wikimedians Community would participate in an organized manner, with a project page created in the Tyap Wikipedia for participants to translate articles related to the theme in the Tyap language. Local and international prizes were also available.
Statement of the Problem: More articles need to be created on women and girls in folklore and modern history.
Goal: To create at least 70 articles related to women and girls in folklore and modern history.
The Wiki Loves Africa 2025 is the fourth time the Tyap Wikimedians Community would participate in any Wiki Loves Africa annual contest.
Statement of the Problem: The world doesn't know much about what types of food are being produced, sold, and consumed in the Southern Kaduna area and most of the Nigerian Middle Belt
Goal: To capture quality images of various foods (raw and cooked), farm preparation processes, crop harvesting, and everything else that falls in the category of the theme for the year, which is "Farm to Plate", using smartphones and digital cameras for upload on Wikimedia Commons.
Result: About 1,652 images were uploaded, and results were shared on our social media handles. Details of the result per uploader can be found on Toolforge here.
Goal: Monthly meeting of the editors of the Tyap Wikimedians community, in which previous, present, and future events are discussed, and inputs are brought in to grow the community more.
Duration: 5 April 2025.
Attendance: About 17 participants registered for the event.
Statement of the Problem: The desire for more words of Dutch origin to be added to the Swánga̱lyiatwuki (Tyap Wiktionary) and those of Tyap origin added to the WikiWoordenboek (Dutch Wiktionary), the need to continue improving on the quality of entries in the Swánga̱lyiatwuki, need to continue creating more standard templates and modules for the Swánga̱lyiatwuki, and most importantly the need to create more entries of Tyap language origin in the Swánga̱lyiatwuki.
Goal: Continue from where the pilot project stopped, and run the project for two months as in the pilot project, to create entries of Dutch in the Swánga̱lyiatwuki, and entries of Tyap origin created in the WikiWoordenboek; continue improving the looks of entries in the Swánga̱lyiatwuki; continue creating necessary templates in the Swánga̱lyiatwuki.
Duration: May 1 – June 30, 2025.
Attendance: 7 editors registered for the project, but again, much fewer editors actually participated.
Result: About 16 files were uploaded on Commons, about 154 entries of Dutch origin were added to the Swánga̱lyiatwuki, 139 entries of Tyap origin were added to the WikiWoordenboek, a total of 340 pages were created in this pilot project in the Swánga̱lyiatwuki. A comprehensive summary of the overall project was published as a diff post on August 30, 2025, titled Swánga̱lyiatwuki-WikiWoordenboek Wiktionary Editing Projects.
The Wiki Audio Walk (WAW) 2025 campaign was carried out in about five locations where the Mabatado dialect of Tyap is spoken. This campaign is the first of its kind in the community and is hoped to be imbibed by other communities to record audios of their native speakers and document them on Wikimedia Commons.
Statement of the Problem: Every language has speech variations (dialects and sub-dialects), and it is good to know the places that render certain words in certain ways, especially for languages that are less developed and yet to attain standardization, as well as get the pronunciations and possibly capture them in IPA renditions for documentation
Goal: Visit five Tyap-Mabatado speaking villages: Sagwaza, Manyi-Aghyui, Cenkwon/Agut Ntswuo, Ashong Ashyui, and Tum, and record the pronunciations of at least 100 words on the Swadesh list.
Duration: 18-22 June 2025.
Attendance: Kambai Akau and Friday musa went on this mission. About 5 tour guides and not less than 15 community leaders and members of the community supported them.
Result: 121 words were recorded in Sagwaza, Manyi-Aghyui, Ashong Ashyui, and Tum; and 111 in Chenkwon/Agut Ntswuo.
The Tyap Wikipedia editors participated in the A̱yangka̱nan Wuki Afi̱rika 2025 mi̱ Naijeriya (Africa Wiki Challenge 2025 in Nigeria) for the first time, under the theme "Reclaiming Our Narrative: Justice for Africans and the Diaspora through Reparations", and were led by Friday musa. This event was hosted by the Open Foundation West Africa (OFWA), and in Nigeria, four language Wikipedia communities participated: Tyap, Hausa, Igbo, and Yoruba. The Tyap and Hausa communities had a joint in-person session to put their editors through on what is required.
Statement of the Problem: The need to have more Wikipedia articles related to slavery and reparations, which concern Africans.
Goal: To create as many articles related to the theme as possible in the Tyap Wikipedia.
Result: About 48 articles were translated in the Tyap Wikipedia. There were 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th place winners. The results were announced during the TWU 9th Community Meeting.
The Tyap Wikimedians User Group held its 9th Community Meeting virtually via Telegram video call.
Goal: To unveil the community's plans for the next quarter of the year, to highlight the achievements of the previous quarter, and to announce the results of the just-concluded Africa Wiki Challenge in the Tyap community.
The Mentor Me! program was originally conceived as the Tyap Wikimedians User Group Mentorship program, which was initially slated to run from August to December 2025 to help community members acquire basic skills to contribute to majorly non-Tyap-related projects like the English Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, Wikidata, and other sister projects of the Wikimedia Foundation.
Statement of the Problem: The Tyap Wikimedians community consists of a large number of people who are non-literate in the Tyap language. Illiteracy in the Tyap language should not be a limitation to anyone who plans to remain a member of the group. For those who are literate in Tyap, their contributions to Wikimedia sister projects should not be limited to contributing to only Tyap-related projects; they could still give much contributions to English-based projects to promote the region where Tyap and related Nenzit languages are spoken in the Nigerian Middle Belt.
Goal: To expose community members to Wikimedia tools and help them acquire basic skills in contributing to different Wikimedia sister projects.
Duration: 10 August - 29 November 2025.
Attendance: There were 46 registered users from across the world.
Results: At least 35 new English Wikipedia articles, templates, and drafts were created by editors editing the English Wikipedia for the first time, such as Danjuma Anthony, Zeerun, and Dorcas Atule. Other participants also contributed during the period of the project, contributing to the Tyap Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Commons. At least 286 images were uploaded by mentees, and a total of about 456 images were uploaded.
The method used for the Tyap Wiki Bootcamp (Season 2) was different from Season 1's approach. Instead of housing participants in a common accommodation for seven days, this very one was broken into six online and six in-person classes. For the in-person classes, attendees would have to come from home, and each class was given a space of three weeks' interval to allow for other programs to take place in between. This second approach was informed by the poor results obtained from the 2024 maiden edition.
Statement of the Problem: High level of illiteracy in the Tyap-speaking community, and the need to train new and retrain existing Wikimedia editors to contribute to Tyap-based projects like the [kcg.wikipedia.org Tyap Wikipedia], [kcg.wiktionary.org Tyap Wiktionary], Wikidata Lexemes (Tyap), and others.
Goal: To train participants to become literate in Tyap within six separate encounters, both in-person and online, with assignments to be submitted at the end of the last class. Participants would also be enrolled in the Mentor Me! program to learn the Wikimedia editing aspect.

Statement of the Problem: There are about 66 Plateau languages and over 100 Nenzit (Platoid) languages, of which only Tyap has a Wikipedia. Among the central Plateau languages, there are Tyapic, Hyamic, Izeric, etc., languages. One of the Tyapic languages, Tyap already has a Wikipedia and the second one, Jju, is already in the Incubator. For Wikimedia activities to be widespread in the region, more language wikis have to be created in other Nenzit languages.
Goal: To create a new Wikipedia project, to recruit new editors to edit Wikimedia projects, to create awareness about Wikimedia projects, and to create a Hyam Wikimedia community.
Duration: 26-28 September 2025.
Attendance: Hyam speakers from Hyam Taa Ham, Kweny, and Shamang speaking areas. A total of 23 participants registered for the event, out of which 20 were new editors.
The 2nd Leadership Retreat program of the community leaders of the Tyap Wikimedians User Group, including Tyap Wikimedians Community, and the Jju Wikimedians Community, and the newly established Hyam Wikimedians Community was prepared to have leaders of the three language communities, especially the newer one, Hyam, to know what the mission and vision of the group is and how to bring them into accomplishment.
Statement of the Problem: Need to be more proactive, to understand what we are, where we are, and where we are going.
Goal: To understand the peculiar challenges faced by the different communities and how to tackle them.
Like in the last Wikidata birthday, Wikidata's 13th birthday celebration in the Tyap community was also marked with a data-a-thon in honor of Wikidata. This data-a-thon have editors literate in Tyap, Jju, and Hyam create and improve Wikidata lexemes in their respective languages, and have those without sufficient knowledge in those languages focus on creating Wikidata items more focused on the Southern Kaduna area and the Nigerian Middle Belt at large. The first day of the event, 1 November 2025, was used to celebrate Wikidata's birthday, and from that day onwards until 30 November 2025, the data-a-thon took place. At the end, results were announced during the group's meetup event on 20 December 2025.
Statement of the Problem: Need to document lexemes in the three existing languages of the group (Tyap, Jju, and Hyam) and the need to create missing items related to Southern Kaduna and the Nigerian Middle Belt.
Goal: To celebrate Wikidata's 13th birthday with the cutting of a cake; to create as many Wikidata lexemes in the Tyap, Jju, and Hyam languages; to create as many Wikidata items as possible related to Southern Kaduna and the Middle Belt.
Duration: 1-30 November 2025.
Attendance: About 23 + 1 participants registered for the event on the event dashboard.
Result: Not less than 237 lexemes and 772 items were created in total. In addition, two English Wikipedia articles were created within the period. Not less than 371 files were uploaded to Commons. (result from the Outreach Dashboard).
