Talk:Maps

Other conversations:

One concern - details in tiles

We will work on, but work in progress

Try to figure out what is needed

for the drawing of the maps

https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T113912

talk to community

what articles could use maps

how would they use maps

example:article about animal - have a map of geographical region

nature oriented, not political

streams, rivers, mountains, deserts

layover of range of habitat

example:US voting districts

political

basic landmarks (parks, roads, bodies of water).

also, mulitzoom levels*

what gets shown at various levels

limits to zoom? (can’t zoom in beyond x?)

tiles as pieces of data (data tiles/vector titles)

no styling, no color, thickness of line

when we show the tile we then style it (stylesheet (like CSS))

line should be this color

text this way, etc

can hide/show/modify at the style level

have to regenerate at the data tile level

open street maps goals is to be very detailed

want editors to add information so others can reuse

design philosophy

—-

kinda follow what mapbox has done

https://www.mapbox.com/developers/vector-tiles/mapbox-streets-v7/#Layer.Reference

land use

set classes

“if landuse of class park draw it as a light green color”

what uses/targets do we want to use?

what dose the community want to do?

layer/object are interchangeable

google maps, map quest as examples

https://www.mapbox.com/help/compare-style/

https://www.mapbox.com/gallery/

ACTION ITEMS[edit]

put together draft introduction

what are we asking

visual examples

list of options?

what to show

what not to show

what are our uses?

Place to discuss

Draft "ask"[edit]

We want to bring interactive OpenStreetMap data to Wikivoyage (and other wikis in the future). In oder to best meet the needs of your community, we want to better understand what is needed in both the detail of the maps and how they could be used.

One example is OpenStreetMaps implementation of Layers

https://www.openstreetmap.org/search?query=fenton%2C%20mo#map=14/38.5099/-90.4349

Is this about map aesthetics? IIUC, I'd recommend:

1) collate all the existing pages about image/file maps, e.g. w:en:Wikipedia:WikiProject Maps/Conventions and comb through the links in c:Commons:Map resources -

2) create a list of what is missing, or unclear, or in conflict between projects.

3) then add in documentation about the styles used in the various gadgets/tools, and maybe other external MoS pointers

4) figure out who is still active in these areas by checking page-histories and talkpages (and who used to be active here, and is still onwiki but just not in this area), and invite them all to a single location to hash out what should be done.

Example questions (maybe too tactical?)[edit]

At Zoom level 16 (picture)

show x, y z labels

at 10 (picture)
