- Wiki N.O.D.E. is an effort by WMDE to coordinate and support software development outside the WMF and WMDE. They had substantial successes. There was a presenter from Wikimedia Indonesia, from Wikimedia Brasil, and Tochi Precious. One line of development was "Lexica" for extending lexemes to form words in various languages. I watched the presentation at [1]
- The next speaker talked about Open Source Japan, a wave of ongoing conferences and recent participation by Wikimedia Japan to describe Wikimedia projects
- On temporary accounts, WMF people spoke. Mahara or Nahara was first. IP editors will no longer have their IP addresses stored in Wikimedia systems. Instead a newly created 'temporary account' will be created and tied to the machine (or its IP addr perhaps) and browser. The temporary account credentials will be held in a cookie in their browser, and will potentially last many sessions, as long as 90 days. This is a new "user type" from the point of view of WMF platforms. IP addrs will still be available for insiders who need them, e.g. for patrolling purposes. Multiple IP addresses can (somehow) be associated with a temporary account. In the previous system, a user making many IP edits would have different addresses at home, cafe, work, and when commuting; but now maybe the temporary acct will last to help us see a coherent string of their edits. It also protects the privacy of their IP and thus location. Which makes it easier to reach out to the individual editor. Many users will be able to get to IP info actually; they may see "Show IP" on lists of histories of edits.
- A temporary account will have a name that begins with -year, eg: -2025-14480. They've thought about the issue of tracking a temporary-account user across Wikimedia sites/projects. When a temporary accounts is created the user will get a kind of "onboarding dialog" box, partly so they understand what is happening and what will be tracked. Temporary accounts can receive thanks. Temporary accounts can be blocked.
- Several aspects for sysops were not completely clear to me: Special:GlobalContributions and Special:IPContributions may now be separate pages and concepts. "AbuseFilter variables" are affected by the new system. Users with extended rights, aka functionaries, can have IP addrs auto-revealed so that they can quickly manage waves of vandalism.
- The new setup is being deployed on smaller wikis first, and then en.wp, in Aug-Sept 2025
