From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Greetings! I am Makoto Koike in Japan.

With several years of active involvement, primarily in the Japanese Wikimedia projects, I am deeply committed to the movement's mission of free knowledge for all. My vision for the Foundation is outlined below.

My Vision for a Globally Cohesive and Legally Sound Wikimedia Movement

[edit]

My extensive engagement with the Wikimedia movement has shaped my perspective on its future, driven by a passion for fostering global knowledge sharing. As a professional Patent Attorney in Japan, I specialize in intellectual property law, with a deep understanding of Japanese copyright law and its judicial precedents. This expertise prepares me to address the complexities of operating a global knowledge platform across diverse legal jurisdictions.
A pivotal moment in my Wikimedia journey came from a debate on copyright interpretation, rooted in differences between Japanese civil law traditions and U.S. common law principles. This experience, which led to a temporary ban, was a turning point that highlighted the need for legal coherence in our global movement. It strengthened my resolve to bridge the gap between the U.S.-centric legal framework often perceived within Wikimedia and the distinct legal principles of civil law countries, particularly Japan. My vision for the Wikimedia Foundation is to enhance legal interoperability by developing multilingual legal guidelines and regional legal support systems. By fostering collaboration between legal experts from diverse jurisdictions, we can ensure that Wikimedia’s policies respect national laws while maintaining a unified global mission. This experience has fueled my commitment to serve on the Wikimedia Foundation Board, where I aim to advocate for a legally sound and culturally inclusive movement.

Explanation of Multiple Accounts

I have unintentionally created multiple accounts. My old accounts are "PatentAttorneyJP" and "Makoto Koike, Ph.D."

I was unable to access the "PatentAttorneyJP" account for a period of more than one year, during which time I have not edited any page of the Wikipedia. Unexpectedly, I regained access to Wikipedia in late June 2025. This timing coincided with the period for filing candidacy for the Board of Trustees election. Due to my inability to access my original account at that critical time, I created a new account, "GreatPatent," to ensure my participation.

With regard to the creation of PatentAttorneyJP, the situations are similar. I was unable to access the Makoto Koike, Ph.D. account for a certain period, followed by a sudden regaining of Wikipedia access.

While I acknowledge that the policy of Wikipedia does not allow multiple accounts, I assure you this was an honest mistake made out of a genuine desire to contribute and participate, not an attempt to circumvent rules. I will consolidate my accounts as per Wikipedia's guidelines.
