SAU WikiClub (Bengali: শেকৃবি উইকিক্লাব) is a Wikimedia-oriented club established at Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University (SAU), Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka, Bangladesh. It is recognized by Wikimedia Bangladesh.

The club is a non-political, non-profit, volunteer-based organization dedicated to the practice and promotion of free knowledge.

Objectives

  • To engage university students in contributing to the Bengali Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects.
  • To engage them to translate academic course-related content from English projects to Bengali projects.
  • To promote the concepts of free knowledge, free software, and open culture, and to foster leadership based on these values.
  • To enhance students' understanding of copyright law, public domain, Creative Commons, and related topics.
  • To organize training programs, workshops, seminars, photo walks, edit-a-thons, and other activities centered around Wikimedia projects.
  • To encourage documentation of local agricultural heritage, biodiversity, and notable contributions of SAU to Bangladesh's food security.

About the Club

SAU WikiClub operates under the broader mission of the Wikimedia Foundation to make the sum of all human knowledge freely available to the world. The club welcomes all students, faculty members, and staff of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University who share an interest in free knowledge and open-source collaboration.

The club primarily focuses on:

Bengali Wikipedia
Contributing new articles, improving existing ones, and maintaining quality standards on the Bengali Wikipedia.
Wikimedia Commons
Uploading free-licensed photographs and media files that document local culture, biodiversity, and campus life.
Wikidata
Adding and curating structured data entries for Bangladeshi topics.
Wikisource
Digitizing and proofreading Bengali-language source texts.

Membership

Eligibility

Any student, faculty member, or staff of Sher-e-Bangla Agricultural University may become a member of SAU WikiClub by registering with the club and creating a Wikipedia account.

Categories of Members

Category Description
General Member Any enrolled student of SAU who has registered with the club.
Active Member A general member who has made at least 50 constructive edits to any Wikimedia project within the last six months.
Senior Member An active member who has been contributing for at least one year and has made at least 500 edits.
Advisor Faculty members or senior Wikimedians who provide guidance to the club.
Honorary Member Individuals who have made extraordinary contributions to the goals of the club or to free knowledge in Bangladesh.

Executive Committee

The club shall be managed by an Executive Committee consisting of the following positions:

Position Responsibilities
President Overall leadership and external representation of the club.
Vice President Assists the President; takes charge in the President's absence.
General Secretary Maintains records, minutes, and official communications.
Treasurer Manages the club's finances and maintains accounts.
Organizing Secretary Plans and coordinates club events and activities.
IT Secretary Manages the club's online presence and technical needs.
Executive Members (2–4) Support the committee in organizing activities.

The Executive Committee shall be elected annually from among the Active Members of the club.

Activities

The club organizes the following types of activities:

  • Edit-a-thons: Organized sessions where members collaboratively edit and create Wikipedia articles on specific topics.
  • Training Workshops: Sessions covering Wikipedia editing, media uploading, Wikidata entry, and related skills.
  • Photo Walks: Campus and community photography sessions to contribute free-licensed images to Wikimedia Commons.
  • Seminars & Talks: Guest lectures by notable Wikimedians and academics.
  • Wiki Competitions: Article writing and photography competitions with awards for outstanding contributions.
  • Outreach Programs: Visits to schools and colleges to introduce students to Wikipedia and free knowledge.
