From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

1. You first started editing on English Wikipedia. How did you reach Punjabi Wikipedia?  Yes, i started editing in English Wikipedia in October 2009 and then somehow in March 2010 came to know that there is a Punjabi Wikipedia as well.

    2. Why did you decide you must contribute to Punjabi wikipedia?  I shared everything about the whole wikipedia project with my father. I suppose it was his far-sightedness, thats why he motivated me to contribute to Punjabi Wikipedia

  3. What is the primary difference you find in the editing cultures on Punjabi and English Wikipedia? Editing English Wikipedia is much tougher than Punjabi Wikipedia at the moment as we don't have many active editors.

 4.  As an admin (in addition to another admin Vigyani), how do you find fellow editors? Are there conflicts? Yes there have been conflicts in the past. I see there were a few editors who were only making trouble and have done some damage to some editors as well. But luckily i was able to convince one editor to continue editing.

 5.  Indian Wikipedians joined hands for various editathons such as http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Lilavati's_Daughters_Edit-a-thon (in which both you and Vigyani have contributed) . Has there been such other special editathons on Punjabi Wikipedia? No there have not been any such edit-thons in Punjabi Wikipedia till date.

 6. Where are most of the Punjabi Wikipedians located (geographically, if you’ve done some analysis)? 3 active editors reside in Patiala. Myself, Charan Gill and Parveer Grewal

  7. Have you attended or organized Punjabi Wikipedia community meet-ups? I will be glad you could share the newspaper scan / website address (if still functional) where a news item of you promoting Punjabi Wikipedia is highlighted. There has not been any specifically organised community meet-up but i keep a regular contact with both the other active editors as one of them is my father and the other one is my best friend. Here is the link to a news clipping http://www.sunday-guardian.com/news/father-son-duo-promote-punjabi-online

 8. Are there any institutions that are either promoting or likely to promote Punjabi Wikipedia? Is there possibility of exchanges or collaboration with Punjabipedia? Till date i don't see a specific institution which is likely to contribute in this regard. There are no plans regarding collaboration with Punjabipedia either.

 9. Congratulations on winning the Umepedia Challenge. What has been your experience in adding content or encouraging content on specific topics with fellow editors? Almost all the issues have been solved and yes it is quite easy for new editors to contribute provided they have required knowledge regarding computers. There is still an issue regargding ProveIt which is required to be fixed. Thank you for your wishes. There hasn't been any such experience with fellow editors on adding content on specific topics.

 10. How are the technical challenges/issues been for your language? Now, is it easy for a new user to start contributing in the wiki easily? Almost all the issues have been solved and yes it is quite easy for new editors to contribute provided they have required knowledge regarding computers. There is still an issue regargding ProveIt which is required to be fixed.

 11. How about interface translation and other things? Interface translation is also pretty good and needs no change as of now.

 12. Are there any Pakistani Contributors on pa.wikipedia.org? Now there has not been any editor from Pakistan on Pa wikipedia.

 13. In addition to Punjabi and English Wikipedia, do you plan to contribute to any other language Wikipedia? I really appreciate your contributions (articles and templates) on Urdu Wikipedia, some of your edits on Pnb Wikipedia, etc. My first preference is always going to be Punjabi Wikipedia. I am going to focus on certain Punjabi related articles on Hindi, Urdu, Pnb, French and other wikipedias as well.

 14. Are you aware of any software/ online website to convert Gurmukhi to Shahmukhi and vice-versa? Yes, i am very well aware of the translation software available to transliterate from shahmukhi to gurmukhi and vice-versa. We have been using them for a few years now.

 15. What are the prevalence/ knowledge levels of Shahmukhi script in India? Shahmukhi is not known much in India. Although some students learn it as a part of their curriculum in Punjabi University but they tend to forget it as they don't use it.

 16. Do you foresee or would like to be part of any collaboration / friendly association with Shahmukhi (pnb.wikipedia.org) Wikipedians? Yes, i was recently thinking of having such collaboration with pnb.wikipedia.org. I was even thinking if one day we could unite both the wikipedias into one.

 17. What is your view about the stub class articles on Punjabi Wikipedia/? Also, does Punjabi Wikipedia in general adhere to the Neutral Point of View (NPOV) rule? I understand many articles are stub right now. But i have been planning with one editor to choose like one article per day and improve it into a good article. Yes, we generally adhere to the NPOV rule.

 18. Some of the other Wikipedia projects such as Punjabi Wiktionary and Wikibooks do not have enough contributors. Is there any effort to rejuvenate these projects? Also, what is your view about starting Punjabi Wikiquote and Punjabi Wikisource? Yes, these projects are not active yet but i see in the future as Punjabi Wikipedia has a considerable number of active editors then we can focus on these as well. The newer projects should start after some time as there is no focus on them right now.

   19. Could you share any and all ideas - small or big, successful & not-so-successful - that you think can help drive Punjabi and other language projects? I see focusing on one editor at a time has been successful. We are planning to visit the government schools one by one. I believe if we can get just one editor from every school, we can certainly take wikipedia to another level.

    20. Could you give us a personal introduction of yourself? Myself Satdeep Gill. I am 20 years old. I live in Patiala. I have just completed by bachelors degree in Punjabi Honours from Punjabi University, Patiala. Now i am going to do MA honors in Punjabi from the same university. I know Hindi, Urdu, English, French and a little bit of Spanish.
