A note on ‘mapframe’ maps and this wiki

You may have heard that the Foundation’s Collaboration Team has been working on a project to improve maps. We’re planning to release the mapframe feature, which embeds maps in wiki pages, to most Wikipedias. I’m writing this note to clarify that nine Wikipedias are not scheduled to get mapframe as part of the release, including this Wikipedia. The reason is Flagged Revisions.

The nine Wikipedias that are not getting mapframe at this time are wikis that use the strict version of Flagged Revisions. At these wikis the latest changes to a page are not shown by default until they can be approved. This protocol causes problems with mapframe. When an approved version of a mapframe map exists on the page and someone edits the map, the approved page displays a blank frame where the map should be.

We’ve looked into the issue (T151665) and may have a solution (T192695). It’s not simple. At this time we can’t promise that we’ll be able to fix the incompatibility of Flagged Revisions and mapframe as part of our current maps project. The current maps project has specific goals and a limited time-frame. We will keep an eye on the task, though, and if we can find time, it’s something we’d like to take care of. If you have thoughts or ideas about this, please leave them on the project talk page or in the tasks I’ve linked to.

Thank you!
