About me
I'm Kavaljeet Singh, a Computer Science undergraduate from India who found his way into the Wikimedia technical ecosystem and never really left.
It started as curiosity about how a project the size of Wikipedia actually stays running, and turned into real production patches, a Gerrit habit I can't shake, and a growing list of contributors I've helped get their first merge. I care about correctness, scale, and making the next person's onboarding easier than mine was.
When I'm not shipping code, I'm usually mentoring someone through their first Gerrit review, organizing a hackathon, or building something with AI on the side just to see what breaks.
I'm a member of Road to Wiki Cohort 2 and a recognized Trusted Tester with WikiClub Tech India, and I volunteer with WikiConference India 2026.

What I actually do
Most days split between three things: writing full-stack code (React, Next.js, Node.js, PostgreSQL), improving developer experience across MediaWiki and its extensions, and walking new contributors through their first real patch.

My Wikimedia story
[edit]I made my first patch not fully knowing what a "gate" or "CI pipeline" even meant — I just wanted to fix something that annoyed me. A reviewer took the time to explain why my patch needed changes instead of just rejecting it, and that one interaction is basically why I now spend a chunk of every week doing the same thing for someone else.
Since then the work has grown from small UI fixes into core patches across MediaWiki, PageForms, and PageTriage, and from "how do I even use Gerrit" questions into mentoring a small group of contributors through their own first merges. The proudest patches aren't necessarily the biggest ones — they're the ones a mentee shipped after I walked them through the review comments.

[edit]I contribute directly to Wikimedia Commons, currently focused on adding structured captions to images to improve searchability and accessibility — alongside media uploads and provenance/attribution work. This connects to my Clip2Commons tooling below, which is built specifically to make own-work uploads to Commons easier and more accurate.
