What is the idea?
CIS-A2K has been conducting a series of mini edit-a-thons since 2020 (LINK THE TEMPLATE). We found that within these two days local Wikimedia projects grow slightly at the same time and with specific topics. Individuals and communities participated in these edit-a-thons.

What have you done in the past on this?
During the previous year, CIS-A2K has conducted at least four mini edit-a-thons which were Mahatma Gandhi 2021 edit-a-thon on 2 and 3 October 2021, Festive Season 2021 edit-a-thon on 11 – 12 December 2021, International Mother Language Day 2022 edit-a-thon on 19 & 20 February 2022 and after a month conducted International Women's Month 2022 edit-a-thon on 19 & 20 March 2022.

For International Mother Language Day 2022 edit-a-thon, A2K engaged a female Wikimedian User:Dugal harpreet, Punjabi Wikimedian, to help organise this edit-a-thon.

Quote from User:Dugal harpreet:

Rough translation: It was the first time I helped Nitesh to conduct a national level edit-a-thon. It was a pleasure to get a responsibility to introduce the communities or individuals to the event. As of now, even, I did not organise any local level edit-a-thon but I got excited to conduct community-level edit-a-thon or proofread-a-thon. Rather, I am thinking about it and I talked to my fellows who gave a positive response. Personally, it boosted my confidence. It was the first time, so, I was a bit nervous too that I do not bother the Wikimedians to approach them again and again. Thanks to Nitesh also who supported and advised me. I am ready to help to organise these kinds of edit-a-thons, so that, I can conduct a Wikisource activity for my community after experiencing this. For International Women's Month 2022 edit-a-thon, A2K engaged a community for two days. Punjabi community has their idea to conduct a women's week on their own. So, A2K contacted them to create or develop contact under the International Women's Month 2022 edit-a-thon as well.

The feedback we received from the participants is quoted below. The future activities are based on their responses to the idea.

2 days edit-a-thons are best. But sometimes due to work, I couldn't participate. Even this time, I have joined for a day only. Overall, it's good and effective.

It was nice participating in it. Wish there were more participants. But nevertheless, it was fun.

Rough translation: I have learnt a lot from this event, there must be conducted such kind of events.

The event is undoubtedly good but I feel that it could be great if the list of Wikipedia articles or Wikisource books or Wikidata items is provided.

I am one of the users who contributed to most of the mini edit-a-thons. It's my immense pleasure to be a part of this initiative. This short format of edit-a-thon has a richer outcome in respect of content addition.

I observed that there were more participants in the beginning. The number of participants is falling day by day. Maybe the prizes are proving as an external factor that inspires the contributors. So my suggestion to organizers is to send some wiki loves to contributors. I am not favouring a physical gift but either it may barnstar, a digital certificate or a talk page appreciation or anything like that. these are some instant thoughts and personally, I believe that external inspiration can not overtake Internal one.

What are you going to do this year? How? When? Iterations?

For the upcoming year, A2K will conduct at least two edit-a-thons on the national level or for all Indic communities.

For the change the pattern of the running edit-a-thon, A2K decided to contact communities and try to engage them to conduct the mini edit-a-thons only for their own local Wiki projects. A2K will support them in the back and communities will take a lead for the same. The community can conduct an event according to their suitable time and dates, they can prepare their own list, they can decide the Wiki project which they want to edit.

What challenge might it solve? (or what are you trying to achieve?)

This is the major challenge that Indic Wiki projects have a lack of content. The communities and Indic Wikimedia projects need the support and the way to run their projects on their own. A2K is trying to help them to engage themselves with their language projects and push them to notice the specific areas where they can work on the same platform.

Collaboration with content enrichment campaigns[edit]

  • LINK PROJECT TIGER, LINK Art+Feminism YesY
  • Why is collaboration important? YesY
  • Please add metrics in a similar way (total number of collaboration: 2, number of participants and so on) YesY

What?
A2K is focusing on content enrichment on Indic Wikimedia projects from the beginning in the form of edit-a-thons. A2K also led the Project Tiger contest's two iterations which is totally focused on article creation.

Why is collaboration important? There are so many online activities where communities or individuals write on or edit Wikimedia projects under any event, edit-a-thon, proofreadathon, campaign or contest. The main motive or objective of these activities is to enrich the content on Wikimedia projects. The only difference is the focus area of the theme or project editing. To reduce the rush of the activities, we should propose a qualitative activity to communities or Wikimedians who can enjoy their editing moment. With these collaborations, Wikimedia projects can get qualitative content as well. Because our primary focus is on quality rather than quantity.

What you have done in past? Before the unfortunate environment, CIS-A2K led the Project Tiger writing contest in India twice. Communities enjoyed the project a lot and they are still interested to continue the third iteration of the contest. The Indic communities proved their enthusiasm towards it in the previous Project Tiger. This was a large collaborative work with Wikimedia Foundation for content enrichment in India.

In February, we have worked with the 1Lib1Ref campaign. One of the team members is from the Punjabi community, so, engaged the community members as a CIS-A2K member. Recently CIS-A2K tried to collaborate with the Art+Feminism team. The Art+Feminism ambassador helped us to prepare a list for editors.

What are you going to do this year? How? When? Iterations? To make something change we will collaborate with a few content enrichment campaigns. For example, these kinds of collaboration can change the series of edit-a-thons and can encourage the Wikimedinas. Also, these collaborations can help us to involve more people. We will collaborate on at least two campaigns.

What challenge might it solve? (or what are you trying to achieve?) With this type of collaboration, we can engage communities more and reduce the rush of different edit-a-thons or activities at the same time.

Request Page[edit]

(please write in details)

  • What is the request page?

CIS-A2K request page is a portal for Indian Wikimedians where they can ask for support towards activities and events in their respective communities or specific Wiki-projects.

  • What type of support is given?

The Request page supports a variety of requests, including support for organising events, support for participating in events, non-financial requests such as merchandise, etc. A request generally undergoes the following steps before approval: event page creation, community discussion and endorsement, and review by CIS-A2K. Most of the requests received for internet support in the last two years.

CIS-A2K has supported Internet connectivity to Wikimedians who requested on A2K's request page. To follow the request, CIS-A2K run a program which is called Internet support for Wikimedians in India. Apart from it, A2K also boosted up newbies who became a part of the Wikimedia movement. A2K found a few Wikimedians from different communities and send them t-shirts to thank them to be with Wikimedia.

  • A few examples of the support we have provided (with links)

On-ground Partnerships or collaborations in Punjab[edit]

(Move to Subodh's sandbox, talk to Subodh ji. Add relevant links)

What?

CIS-A2K is working in the area of partnerships and collaborations for the last few years. It is happening mostly in Maharashtra. CIS-A2K wants to widen the idea of partnerships in other regions as well.

What have you done in past?

CIS-A2K is collaborating or partnering in Maharashtra state with different organisations, libraries or clubs. It also did partnerships at Goa and West Bengal.

What are you going to do this year? How? When? Iterations?

There is no partnership or collaboration at Punjab from CIS-A2K. To widen the scope of partnership A2K will work with the institutes, NGOs, organisations or clubs in Punjab.

What challenge might it solve? (or what are you trying to achieve?)

To be aware of the specific region regarding the free knowledge, content gaps, Wikimedia movement and Wikimedia projects. CIS-A2K will engage the partners according to their capacity and try to involve people with Wikimedia.

Visual Content Gap on Wikimedia Commons[edit]

Expand the portion, what we are trying to do, with examples

What?

Wikimedia projects are growing day by day through events, activities, edit-a-thons, hack-a-thons, photo walks and so on. CIS-A2K is supporting communities from the beginning in different manners. A2K also promoted photo walks from a few years ago. A2K wants to go ahead with the idea of the visual content gap on Wikimedia commons. Wikimedia Commons has a lot of space to store the visual content which is important to have. For example, A2K conducted the Pune Nadi Darshan 2022 campaign for uploading the media files of the Pune district. This campaign is trying to fill the gap in visual content related to the Pune district's rivers. This is a local event with a local club which is the original idea of CIS-A2K. This is a part of the collaboration. But CIS-A2K wants to encourage Wikimedians or communities or user groups to plan their own activities to cover the visual gap of the specific region.

What have you done in the past on this? A few months ago, A2K received a request on its request page regarding Share Your Struggle 2021. The campaign was regarding uploading the media file of any kind of struggle for example Farmer protests.

What are you going to do this year? How? When? Iterations? We will introduce the communities to this effort and guide them on how they can do it. After introducing the communities, we will run a 'Visual Content Gap campaign.' Under this campaign, communities can ask for support. We will support them and help them to find the visual content that they can upload on Wikimedia Commons from their region or area.

One example is Punjabi Community purposed an idea of the content gap which is Wiki Loves Wild Flowers, recently. During this project, the community is trying to upload media related to Wildflowers, specifically. They mapped the list of which media files are not available on Wikimedia Commons or have low quality. They involve an expert photographer who knows about the content that he uploads. They will add details on Wikimedia Commons as well as will create content on local Wikipedia.

We will approach communities to find their interest and will support them to map their ideas and collect the visual content which Wikimedia has not or quality is not fine.

What challenge might it solve? (or what are you trying to achieve?) We are trying to bridge the visual content gap on Wikimedia Commons. With this effort, the community can easily find the important visual content around them. After capturing the content they can use it on Wikipedias or they can create content about the same.

Community engagement, Capacity building and Leadership encouragement[edit]

  • What is the idea?

This is important now to work with communities to build their capacity, grow the strength of the communities or user groups and encourage leadership.

  • What have you done in the past on this?

For the last two years, A2K tried to engage people with the Wikimedia movement and interact with each other. All efforts were virtual and a few examples are Wikimedia Wikimeet India 2021, virtual calls like Maryana’s Listening Tour with South Asia communities and so on.

  • What are you going to do this year? How? When? Iterations?

Two years back A2K was planning to interact with one to one communities and fix their issues. This year, we are planning to implement the process. We will assess the needs of the communities, interact with them, try to fix their policies, prepare strategies to develop the community and maintain its capacity building of them.

  • What challenge might it solve? (or what are you trying to achieve?)

The community’s strength is decreasing day by day, the growth is not moving. Wikimedians are also worried about their language Wiki growth and people are not involved anymore. They need a push to do the work on these issues. Due to hectic schedules, volunteers do have not enough time to plan such things and for it, a group of people is primarily. So, A2K will try to find people to work together for their communities.
