Intro

[edit]

My name is Pius Osuji, I'm a Software Engineer from the eastern part of Nigeria with a background in computer science and a love for all things tech. Aside from tech, I am also a big fan of sports and would have probably been a soccer player in another life lol. I'm thrilled to share that I’ve been selected as an Outreachy intern for the June 2025 to August 2025 cohort. During this period, I will be working with the Wikimedia Foundation on the Bulk OCR Tool

What Motivated Me to Apply for Outreachy

[edit]

My decision to apply for the Outreachy internship was driven by a deep desire to grow as a developer and become more involved in open-source communities. I've always been passionate about code, and I see every challenge as a chance to learn something new and sharpen my skills.

Outreachy stood out to me because it offers not just an internship, but a truly inclusive space for underrepresented individuals in tech. The more I read about past intern stories and impactful projects, the more inspired I felt. Throughout the application stages, what kept me going was a combination of curiosity, grit, and excitement. I love solving problems and pushing myself beyond my comfort zone.

My Contribution Journey

[edit]

During the contribution phase, I was introduced to a whole new programming language and code architecture that was unfamiliar at first. This stage was a huge learning curve, but also incredibly rewarding.

I dove deep into the Wikimedia tech ecosystem, exploring codebases, tools, and workflows I had never encountered before. But thanks to my mentors, the supportive community, and detailed documentation, I was able to quickly get up to speed. Some meaningful contributions that I have made so far:

These tasks allowed me to work hands-on with Wikimedia codebase and ecosystem.

Looking Ahead

[edit]

As I begin my internship, I’m excited not only to build and complete my project but also to learn as much as I can along the way. I hope to deepen my understanding of open-source collaboration, gain experience working in a large and diverse codebase, and build meaningful relationships with my mentors and fellow interns.
