From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Wikimedia Commons. Yep: yet another wiki. Chances are that you've seen the work that is done in this wiki, even if you're not aware of it. So how is it possible that this rapidly growing project just surpassed two million files without anyone even batting an eyelid?

Files? That's your first hint. Wikimedia Commons is a media repository. It's likely that most of the photographs, drawings and illustrations you see on Wikipedia are actually stored at Wikimedia Commons. Thanks to some technical wizardry, any file at Wikimedia Commons is able to be used transparently and easily at any of the nearly 500 active Wikipedias, Wikibooks, Wikisources and so on.
