Create an audio file of a name

[edit]
  1. Record the name on the voice recorder of your phone. Avoid background noise like car noise, cats... and echo!
  2. Save file on your PC.
  3. If necessary, convert the file into a .wav-file using an online-converter like this
  4. Open file in Audacity: download here
  5. If necessary, crop space in the beginning and end of the file (e. g. if there is noise)
  6. Convert to an .ogg-file
  7. Save file on your PC.

Note: You can skip step 3, if you use Audacity for recording or a voice recorder that can produce .ogg-files (for Android: Fossify Voice Recorder, free of charge)

Upload your file to Wikimedia Commons

[edit]
  • Upload one or several files via this Wikimedia Commons Upload Tool
  • Add a description saying something like Pronunciation of name by a native speaker; if possible, add the area the person comes from as pronunciation may vary from place to place.
  • Add categories:
    • Female pronunciation and Pronunciation of female names will always be welcome.
    • The name of the person, if this category already exists.
    • A category indicating the language, e. g. Hungarian pronunciation of names of people.

Insert your audio into Wikipedia articles

[edit]

Here are a few examples of how to implement the audio file into a Wikipedia article in the respective language version:

German Wikipedia: {{Audio|Wladimir Jurowski.ogg|anhören}} (template: Vorlage Audio) - ends up in
 {{Audio|Audiodatei-Name|anhören}}

English Wikipedia: {{Audio|Wladimir Jurowski.ogg|pronunciation}}

Alemannic Wikipedia: {{Audio|Zh-Mao Zedong.ogg|aaloose}}

Arabic Wikipedia: {{صوت|Zh-Mao Zedong.ogg}}

Aragonés and Catalán: Put the template in front of the existing name in the article and delete the name, otherwise it will be double in the end: {{Audio|Zh-Mao_Zedong.ogg|'''Mao Zedong'''}}

French: {{Prononciation|JPN-Kyoko-Aizome.ogg}}

Swedish: {{Audio|Gr-Georgia-Damasioti-geschnitten.ogg|lyssna}}

Spanish: {{audio|Gr-Georgia-Damasioti-geschnitten.ogg|pronunciación}}

Feel free to complete the list with the syntax code of your Wikipedia.
