From Meta, a Wikimedia project coordination wiki

Wikimedia Perempuan community, also known as WikiPerempuan, is an inclusive initiative under Wikimedia Indonesia. The community’s mission is to support women in contributing to Wikimedia projects by creating a safe, inclusive space while addressing gender gaps in participation.

As part of the Wikimedia Indonesia ecosystem, the community is made up of dedicated contributors and volunteers committed to increasing women's engagement across Wikimedia platforms—including Wikipedia, Wikidata, Wikimedia Commons, and Wikiquote. The community also plays an active role in enriching content related to women and gender issues, ensuring women’s perspectives are better represented across Wikimedia.

WikiPerempuan also aims to strengthen networks and collaborations with like-minded communities, educational institutions, feminist organizations, and cultural institutions. With this foundation, the community hopes to empower more women to actively shape and expand the Wikimedia Indonesia ecosystem.

History

[edit]

On March 8, 2025, coinciding with International Women’s Day, the WikiPerempuan community was officially launched in Indonesia. This initiative emerged from the shared desire of women contributors within Wikimedia Indonesia to create a safe, supportive, and inclusive space for women to actively participate in Wikimedia projects.

The founding of WikiPerempuan was motivated by the ongoing gender gap in the Wikimedia ecosystem. Globally, only 9% of Wikipedia editors are women, and in the Indonesian Wikipedia, only 21.2% of biographies feature women—highlighting the urgent need for greater gender equity. Barriers such as notability criteria, lack of media coverage (especially for women in STEMM fields), and limited access to freely licensed images contribute to the underrepresentation of women in Wikimedia projects.

WikiPerempuan was created not only to encourage more women to contribute, but also to promote content about women and ensure their voices and achievements are better represented online. As part of its soft-launch phase, the community introduced Project Gayatri, which includes a WikiLatih training session and a Wikipedia Edit-a-thon Competition focused on women-related topics. This pilot project is supported by Wikimedia Indonesia’s Education Team and involves women volunteers from various local communities, such as Wikimedia Banjar and Medan.

Despite being in its early stages, WikiPerempuan quickly gained momentum, attracting over 157 followers on social media within its first month. This reflects the strong enthusiasm and demand for a more inclusive space within the Wikimedia movement.

Moving forward, WikiPerempuan aims to grow as an officially recognized and impactful community within Wikimedia Indonesia, welcoming all women to join the movement, share knowledge, and help build a more equitable and representative Wikimedia landscape.

Projects

[edit]

The community focuses on Wikimedia initiatives that boost women's participation and enhance gender-related content. These include:

  • Wikipedia: Writing and expanding articles about women, women's history, and gender issues.
  • Wikidata: Enriching data on women figures, women’s organizations, and gender-related topics.
  • Wikimedia Commons: Uploading and managing media related to women, including portraits and community documentation.
  • Wikiquote: Collecting quotes from Indonesian women to increase their representation in open resources.

Regular Activities

[edit]
  • Monthly Meetings: A monthly check-in to evaluate past activities and plan future programs. These meetings are led by rotating coordinators and can be held online or in-person.
  • Meetups (Kopdar): Face-to-face meetups to edit Wikimedia projects together, share experiences, and build community. These can be held in various cities or tied to special community events.
  • Online Gatherings: Virtual sessions for discussions and collaborative editing on women’s topics—offering a space for those who can’t attend in-person events to stay involved.
  • WikiLatih: A training program focused on introducing women to Wikimedia, enhancing editing skills on Wikipedia, Wikidata, Wikiquote, and Wikimedia Commons, and growing women-centered content. These sessions can be held online or in-person, often in collaboration with partners.
  • Edit-a-thon: WikiPerempuan organizes thematic edit-a-thons to encourage the creation and improvement of articles related to women. These events provide an open, collaborative space where contributors from diverse backgrounds come together to enrich Wikipedia’s coverage of women. The edit-a-thons also serve as a launching point for building a more active and impactful community.

Collaborations

[edit]

The community also runs campaigns and editing challenges aimed at increasing women-related content across Wikimedia projects. These may include global campaigns like WikiGap, Wiki Loves Women, Women in Red, and Art+Feminism. Editing competitions might involve creating new biographies, editing data on Wikidata, or uploading media on Wikimedia Commons.

WikiPerempuan also seeks to build partnerships with organizations that share similar goals—including educational institutions, feminist groups, and cultural organizations—to amplify impact. Additionally, the community explores exchange programs with other Wikimedia communities to foster cross-learning and deeper collaboration.
