About me

I am Mohd Shadab, an active Wikimedian and open knowledge practitioner based in Prayagraj, India. My work focuses on community capacity-building, GLAM engagement, cultural documentation, and organizing live edit-a-thons within university and student communities.

I am particularly committed to mentoring university students and first-time contributors—helping them understand the Wikimedia ecosystem, create accounts, and make their first meaningful contributions to free knowledge projects.

Community & leadership focus

I lead and coordinate community-driven Wikimedia initiatives through WikiClub Tech UU, a student-led platform for learning, collaboration, and contribution.

My work includes organizing live edit-a-thons, newcomer onboarding sessions, and cultural documentation drives that encourage sustained participation in Wikimedia projects.

GLAM & institutional engagement

As Wikimedian-in-Residence at United University, I coordinate GLAM activities, institutional collaborations, and student engagement programs focused on documenting academic, cultural, and community knowledge on Wikimedia platforms.

Mentorship & capacity-building

To date, I have mentored 70+ university students, guiding them through:

Understanding Wikimedia projects and policies
Creating and using Wikimedia accounts responsibly
Making first edits and uploads on Wikimedia Commons
Exploring technical and non-technical contribution pathways

Community initiatives

I design and lead community-driven initiatives that promote participation in the Wikimedia ecosystem, with a strong focus on students and first-time contributors.

WikiClub Tech UU – A student-led Wikimedia and open-source community fostering learning, collaboration, and contribution.
Chai with Wiki – Informal discussion-based sessions introducing Wikimedia projects in a relaxed and welcoming environment.
Wiki Loves Culture – A cultural documentation initiative focused on preserving local heritage and everyday community life on Wikimedia Commons.
Women in Wiki – A mentorship and onboarding initiative supporting women contributors in Wikimedia and open knowledge spaces.

Through these initiatives, I have mentored 70+ university students in understanding Wikimedia projects, creating accounts, and making their first meaningful contributions.
