Channel purpose[edit]

#wikipedia-en serves as the English Wikipedia's main IRC channel, and with the decline in popularity of #wikipedia, as the channel Wikimedians are most likely to come for non-editing help, general queries, discussions and whatnot. It is the front lobby of the English Wikipedia on freenode. Among its main purposes are to direct users to the appropriate channels for their query, if #wikipedia-en is not the best venue (see #Alternate venues).

  16. Keep critiques of other users to a private message with them, rather than publicly embarrassing them. Try to put yourself in their position to see whether or not what you say may offend.

Op guidelines[edit]

  • Channel operators should contact users with any issue in private, to avoid distrupting the channel.
  • Channel operators should avoid discussiong issues in the channel, and point users to #wikimedia-opsconnect for such discussions.
  • Channel operators should ask for input from other operators if unsure about how best to proceed.
  • Channel operators should seek to apply quiets instead of bans whenever possible and appropriate.
  • Channel operators should try to be a catalyst to keep channel temperature down. Freenode's channel guidelines are also helpful in getting things to run smoothly.
  • Unless no-one else is around, channel operators should try to get another operator involved when you think you might have a conflict of interest.
