Tourbillon: Request[edit]

Subject: Request about the single user login "Tourbillon"
Date: Sat, May 31, 2008 at 8:06 PM

Hello, Wikipedian colleague!

My name is Vassia Atanassova, User:Spiritia, across all projects of Wikimedia Foundation, but mainly contributor to the Bulgarian Wikipedia. After the mass introduction of SUL, I undertook the challenging task to consult my fellow wikipedians about SUL and negotiate in cases of username conflicts.

And this is the reason to contact you now: the SUL created by you several days ago, obtaining globally account "Tourbillon". Maybe when you activated your SUL, you have understood that you are not the sole owner of this account across all projects. The wikis where this account is hold by another (identical) editor are bg.wikipedia.org , commons.wikimedia.org, sv.wikipedia.org , mk.wikipedia.org and cv.wikipedia.org . I think that at least one other project , nl.wikipedia.org , is not owned by you, as well. Well, the question now is that my colleague Tourbillon from Bulgarian Wikipedia is a very prominent editor in our community. For about one year, since his registration on 12:18, 25 May 2007, he has made more than 4500 contributions and is the main author of 3 featured articles. He also contributes with free illustrative content on Commons and edits on English Wikipedia, under another name. :-)

I do not exactly know from which project have you made the SUL, I worked out your email, by the coincidence of two automatically created accounts after SUL on the Russian and Polish Wikipedia. But from what I see about the account statistics http://toolserver.org/~vvv/sulutil.php?user=Tourbillon you cannot have more than 8 edits at your best. And here comes our very kind request to you. Please, allow my colleague to have this username globalised in his favour. We are pretty aware what an awkward situation this is and how hard it might be for some people to consider such a request and agree to cooperate.

But, the general idea behind SUL is that unified login is not only for the sake of single sign-up, but also for having consistent identity across all wikis. Especially with respect to Commons, Meta and other multilingual projects. Maybe you have already discovered: with your global account you cannot login to Commons. This sharing of accounts deprives not only my colleague, but also you from having your unique, consistent identity in all wikis of the Foundation. And this is a problem that can be technically solved in a very easy way. You just need to ask on http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Steward_requests/SUL_requests to have your global account deleted, choose a new, unused and unique, username (you can use http://toolserver.org/~vvv/sulutil.php ), and ask for rename on the projects where you have made any edits. Renaming will free the account and will allow further using it.

Please, consider the amount of contributions and participation in various projects by Tourbillon @ Bulgarian Wikipedia. As well as you own benefit of having your own unique and consistent identity and access to Commons via the same account. We very much hope for your benevolent response. I add the email of my colleague.

Thank you in advance,

Vassia Atanassova - Spiritia

Hello, Wikipedian colleague!

My name is Vassia Atanassova, User:Spiritia, across all projects of Wikimedia Foundation, but mainly contributor to the Bulgarian Wikipedia. After the mass introduction of SUL (single user login), I undertook the challenging task to consult my fellow wikipedians about SUL and negotiate in cases of username conflicts.

And this is the reason to contact you now: you hold the account Zara on Polish Wikipedia with 3 contributions, which conflicts with the account Zara on Bulgarian Wikipedia, which is the home wiki of this account with about 300 edits since 23 September 2006. She also holds this account on Commons, Meta, the Incubator, as well as about 20 other wikis where she owned it in advance or had it usurped in her favour. She has also requested it elsewhere.

And here comes our very kind request to you. Please, agree to change your username and thus allow my colleague to have this account globalised in her favour. We are pretty aware what an awkward situation this is and how hard it might be for some people to consider such a request and agree to cooperate.

But, the general idea behind single user login is that unified login is not only for the sake of single sign-up, but also for having consistent identity across all wikis. Especially with respect to Commons, Meta and other multilingual projects. Maybe you have already discovered: you cannot login to Commons with Zara. This sharing of accounts may deprive not only my colleague, but also You from having your unique, consistent identity in all wikis of the Foundation. And this is a problem that can be technically solved in a very easy way. You just need to ask your local bureaucrats to rename you to a new, unused and unique, username (you can use http://toolserver.org/~vvv/sulutil.php to identify such a username). You will not lose any of your contributions by means of this rename, they will be moved under your new account. Then you will also be able to perform your successful SUL. Please, consider the benefit of having your own unique and consistent identity and access to Commons via the same account.

Zara and I very much hope for your benevolent response. Herewith I add the email of my colleague. If you need further information, advise or help, please, feel free to contact me via email or on my talk page in BG Wikipedia.

Thank you in advance,

Spiritia
