  • Picture this: The earliest attestation of a term you can find is in a journal from 1980. The person who wrote the article is now 82 years old and you want to know whether they heard or seen it before they wrote it. The likelihood that this person is still in good health and of sound mind is quite low. Nonetheless, you email them with great hope but little expectation. Within an hour, they respond back answering your questions clearly and with some whit. I feel like this opportunity could have been lost at any moment, but yet here we are, with this sourceable information located on Wiktionary. I did not let time cause knowledge to be lost.

Saint Thomas Aquinas's Third Way

Main article: Five Ways (Aquinas) § Third way: The Argument from Time and Contingency

1. Everything that we are aware of has a beginning and an eventual end. In other words, no one thing has always existed.
2. If that is true, then nothing existed at some point.
3. If nothing existed then, then nothing would exist now, which is absurd.
4. Therefore, something eternal must exist.
