Are you a geocacher, new here? |
Are you a cache owner? |
Are you already a wikimedian? |
Give a feedback! |

Hi, did you get here by playing geocaching, so by scanning the QR code hidden in a cache? Or from the talk page of a Wikimedia project?
Anyway, I'm going to welcome you to Wikicaches, or the WikiHide game!
How does it work?

Geocaching is a type of treasure hunt in which participants, called "geocachers," use a GPS receiver[1] to hide or find containers of different types and sizes. These containers are called "geocaches," or more simply, "caches."
It's not about cash (we're volunteers on Wikipedia), it's not really a cache cache, Wikicaches is more of a treasure hunt for Wikipedians and beyond!
- Various geocaching caches in Italy have been enriched with gadgets (pins and/or stickers) from the Wikimedia projects and OpenStreetMap.
- You can only take one per cache...
- ...but you can try to collect as many as possible by searching the other wikicaches! :)
- Please remember to put the cache back exactly where you found it and leave a comment in this page, or write to me by email
- If you want to write about it on social media you can use the hashtags #wikicaches or #wikicache (I've already started on Mastodon)

Where?
The first 10 Wikicaches (or WikiHideaways) are scattered throughout the Aosta Valley, in the municipalities of Aosta, Aymavilles, Cogne, Fénis, Gressan, Sarre, and Saint-Christophe. New Wikicaches have been added in Emilia-Romagna (for example, in the metropolitan city of Bologna or in the municipalities of Marzabotto, Pianoro, and San Lazzaro di Savena), and also in Tuscany (for example, on the via degli Dei in the municipality of Barberino di Mugello). If the game becomes successful, you could consider helping out and/or creating new WikiCaches, or even proposing it in other regions.
- 2022: Valley of Aosta
- 2023: Emilia-Romagna and Tuscany
- 2024: Emilia-Romagna and Veneto
- 2025: Emilia-Romagna, Piemonte e Valle d'Aosta (proponi la tua regione)

When
The game starts on December 21, 2022, and will continue until the goodies run out (let me know).
Why
There's no particular reason to organize a treasure hunt. I'm a longtime Wikipedian who, during my vacations or breaks, wants to have fun and entertain others. The gadgets were provided by the Wikimedia Foundation and Wikimedia Italia.
Note
- ↑ I use the geolocation (GPS) of a smartphone.
