Welcome to the IEG Committee[edit]

Hi Addis,
Thanks for signing up to join the Individual Engagement Grants Committee! It is my pleasure to confirm your membership. We’ve got a lot to accomplish together, particularly during the next 2 months, and it will be awesome to have your help. Here is how to get started:

To make your membership official, please do 2 things by Tuesday April 2:

  1. Introduce yourself in the IdeaLab.
  2. Send your email address and preferred username to IEGrants(_AT_)wikimedia.org, so that we can subscribe you to the committee mailing list and get you setup on the committee's internal wiki.

Then there are 3 first tasks for active committee members to start on right away:

  1. Read the information in the Committee Workroom (your committee organizing hub on meta), beginning with the getting started guide for new members.
  2. Join a working group.
  3. Start giving feedback on open ideas, drafts and proposals. Asking questions to gather information you’ll need to make a recommendation helps prospective grantees think their projects all the way through, and will give us more great proposals to choose from.

Our formal review of proposals starts on 21 April. I’ll be posting information about scoring and selection of proposals on the committee mailing list and in the Workroom soon, so please keep an eye there!

Thanks again for joining us to help make impactful IEGrants :-) Siko (WMF) (talk) 17:01, 28 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The edit visualization tool[edit]

Hi Addis, Thanks for offering to help. To bring Chinese support to the tool, we'll need to add the Chinese translations for the messages in the tool. You could do that but forking the tool on github & editing https://github.com/cosmiclattes/wikireplay/blob/standalone/js/lib/namespace.js. A simpler way would be to send me the translations for the following phrases:

  • Enter article name
  • Place the peg on the edit to play
  • Click Play
  • Enjoy viewing edits
  • Show History
  • What is replay edits
  • Enter article name
  • Speed
  • Relay/pause
  • Article does not exist

I'll then enable zh on the tool & chinese articles will work too :-) --Jeph paul (talk) 06:12, 25 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Movement Wide Finance Report 2014[edit]

Dear AddisWang,

I’m Alex, currently a finance fellow (i.e intern) at the Wikimedia Foundation. I worked before for Wikimedia France, planning the Hackathon Lyon 2015 mainly. I'm today contacting you because of your activity for Wikimedia China User Group.

Last year, Finance Fellows produced a financial report that included financial activity from every chapters. It was great and has been presented at the Wikimania in Mexico.

If you haven’t seen the results of the Report 2013, here they are: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Chapter-wide_Financial_Trends_Report_2013

We’re currently starting the Report 2014 and this year we also want to include user groups to improve the scope of our work. I want to tell you that I’ve tried to make the process as short and easy as possible, so that shouldn’t require a lot of your time.

The aim of such a report is global. It helps having an idea of how the money is used across the movement, it helps chapters and user groups to learn about best practice and finally it leads to more transparency through a qualitative work, which I believe is important.

Could you briefly tell me if you had any income and expenses in 2014? If you are not the person responsible for this, please tell me who is the user the most likely to know this information.

I’ll be your contact for this project this year, I’m looking forward to working with you!

Cheers, ACella (WMF) (talk) 21:05, 6 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Central Notice Banner[edit]

Hi Addis,

I've create a separate project page for Wikipedia Asian Month here:

Project page

We like to see a localized version of the Central Notice Banner directing to the above page and NOT the ENWP page.

Please here us.--Muzammil (talk) 09:32, 25 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Wikipedia Asia Month[edit]

Yeah, I'm also thinking about signing up Minangkabau for this event :) Unfortunately our community is still very small (3-4 active contributors), but I'll contact them to know whether they're interested to launch WAM in Minangkabau. I'll let you know before 30 October. Cheers! Muhraz (talk) 07:26, 28 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Broken centralnotice[edit]

The "Wikipedia Asia Month" banner (which I think you created?) doesn't seem to be configured correctly. The CentralNotice calendar says it's supposed to be targeted to just users in Asian countries, but users in other countries are seeing the banner as well. Also, the banner is overlapping with page titles in monobook. Are you able to fix this? --Yair rand (talk) 20:24, 29 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Yair rand:, it was created by Shizhao, I will ask him about it.--AddisWang (talk) 20:31, 29 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Question[edit]

Hello. Thank you very much for update. I have question. You wrote Any Asian topic will be counted. Topics do not have to be about geopgraphy.. Example, users can not create articles about cities, villages, lakes, rivers and etc. ?--Serk@nl@nd 11:12, 30 October 2015 (UTC)

No. "Don't have to be" means, "it is not necessary to be only about geography". Because many people confused and think only geography article counts. So I make a statement that all topics are count, not only geography.--AddisWang (talk) 11:15, 30 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

So they can create articles about cities, villages, lakes, rivers and etc.--AddisWang (talk) 11:16, 30 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia Asian Month in french[edit]

Hello. Thank you for your help. I did the translations you asked. I have an other question : am I free to use the presentation I want on the Participants page ? The way the participants have to report their contribution in the english version is not very easy, in my opinion. And I don't think we will have so many participants in french. So I would like to present it in a different way. Is it possible ? Thank you very much. --Eponimm (talk) 15:08, 3 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. --Eponimm (talk) 17:17, 3 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hello AddisWang. I have an other question : at the end of the month, as I don't use the tool to collect the results, how shall I transmitt them ? I just want to be sure that the french participants will receive their postcard. As well for the "Wikipedia Asian Ambassador". Should I prepare something ? Is there a model ? Thank you in advance. --Eponimm (talk) 09:09, 4 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Great! It's really simple this way. Thank you very much for your help! --Eponimm (talk) 15:51, 4 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hello AddisWang. Today the banner to promote Wikipedia Asian Month appeared on the french Wikipédia with the translation I did previous weeks. But the problem is that the link redirects to the english page and not to the french page of the contest. Is it a technical error ? Did I miss something in my translation ? Thank you in advance. --Eponimm (talk) 13:38, 16 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
It works perfectly! Thank you very much! --Eponimm (talk) 06:40, 17 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hello AddisWang. I need your help one more time, sorry. I write a new question on Q&A page and I didn't have an answer. It's about the admissibility of a person. Thank you very much for your help. --Eponimm (talk) 06:34, 20 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Judging tool[edit]

Hello AddisWang! judging tool doesn't count expanded articles to check Progress for users who contributed with an existing article. What should We do for this?--Randeerjayasekara (talk) 03:35, 6 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your answer. We have translated rules from EnWp and that's why the problem occurred because there is no such a rule given in Meta. I'm the only one who have done expansion yet. Then I'll remove that rule from local page.--Randeerjayasekara (talk) 12:20, 6 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Question[edit]

Again Hi AddisWang. Thank you very much for important information which you place my Azerbaijanian talk page. I have a question: As 25 November in project two user very active: Qolcomaq, who has 80 quailfied articles for present (his contributions here) and Enver62, who has 76 quailfied articles for present (his contributions here). If one of them ranked second place, can I announce his as "Second Wikipedia Asian Ambassador"? And where must I show "Second Wikipedia Asian Ambassador"?--Serk@nl@nd 10:46, 25 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

And I translated message for encourage local participants: az:İstifadəçi:Serkanland/mass/az. Must I or you send it?--Serk@nl@nd 11:28, 25 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

That is actually a trick question. As we want to have some competition over the title, to make it kind of valuable. Maybe let's keep it in only one Ambassador, and maybe have another discussion at the end of the event whether we can have a second Ambassador on AzWp? Does this idea make sense?--AddisWang (talk) 18:15, 25 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

You can send the message. I will send message for some Wikipedia which has large number of participants. Since we can use mass message to send this to hundreds of people. But not necessary for 10 or 20 participants. It depends on if you want to send it.--AddisWang (talk) 18:20, 25 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Okey. I understood everthing. Again thank you for help.--Serk@nl@nd 18:23, 25 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia Asian Ambassador[edit]

Hello AddisWang. I read your message "One Week Left!" and I have a question about Wikipedia Asian Ambassadors. You wrote that "For some Wikipedias, we are also honoring the second greatest contributor as an ambassador". The french Wikipedia has few participants, but there are three participants who will certainly reach 30 articles each. Of course, there will be a first, a second and a third, but as they are really close, is it possible to do something for the three of them ? Would it be a podium with medals (gold, silver and bronze) ? Or will it be only one french Wikipedia Asian Ambassador ? Thank you very much for your answer. --Eponimm (talk) 14:16, 25 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your point of view. Do you agree if I act this way : a podium with the three best participants; the winner will receive the title of asian ambassador and the package included; the second, as you said, will win the same, and the third will only have an additional postcard. This way, the final days will be decisive and the competition intensive as the three best participants are today really close. Are you ok with my proposal ? --Eponimm (talk) 18:51, 25 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, how does one report contributions towards the Asian month? --BooysenN (talk) 14:09, 26 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@BooysenN:You can do that on each language version of Wikipedia.

Bashkortostan articles[edit]

Hello AddisWang. Regarding your last message I have a question about Bashkortostan articles. In all the articles worked during the contest in the french Wikipedia, only one is related to Bashkortostan : Çäkçäk. It's a popular and traditional sweet in Bashkortostan. Does that count? Thank you for your help. --Eponimm (talk) 16:39, 2 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Ok! Thank you for your quick answer. --Eponimm (talk) 16:51, 2 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello AddisWang. In the Qualified Editors page, how do you want to be notified about my third best participant, who, as we discussed, will have a second postcard for his great contribution (49 articles!) but who won't be an ambassador ? With a letter of the alphabet ? With a symbol like " * " ? Thank you in advance! --Eponimm (talk) 09:45, 3 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Postcard vs Country[edit]

... each participant who creates at least five articles that fulfill the criteria will receive a special designed Wikipedia postcard from other participating countries. So, if a participant creates more than 10 articles for different countries, which country postcard the participant could receives. I understand a participant could receive only one postcard regardless of number of article creation. I am not sure whether you have discussed this issues earlier. Is so, point me to the link. --AntanO 04:56, 3 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Asiatiese Maand[edit]

Hi there,

I’m Jethro, and I’m seeking your help in deciding topics for new IdeaLab campaigns that could be run starting next year. These campaigns aim to bring in proposals and solutions from communities that address a need or problem in Wikimedia projects. I'm interested in hearing your preferences and ideas for campaign topics!

Here’s how to participate:

Wikipedia Asian Month in sq.wikipedia[edit]

Hello AddisWang,

I read your message in my talk page but hadn't enough time to response, (we had an event in our local community). About Wikipedia Asian Month, in the beginning, I didn't know that this project was also open for other communities outside Asia, therefore we started very late sq.wiki, in which I helped as much as I could. I hope that next time our wiki to participate from the start and contribute more. I think projects like this bring together more wiki communities. Best Regards.--Liridon (talk) 12:41, 13 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@AddisWang:,Okay I have filled the Survey again with full mailing address plz check it out. If possible ask my Mobile number via emailing me,because there was no option in survey form to give mobile number of receiver thanks Thanks..--Jogi don (talk) 07:50, 15 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Jogi don:We usually don't put phone number on postcard.--AddisWang (talk) 14:33, 15 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@AddisWang:,Okay dear

Final Stage[edit]

Hello AddisWang! I have new questions relative to your last message :

  1. Will the postcard be in paper or electronic ?
  2. What do you call "distribution"? I gave the survey link to the qualified participants but I have no way to know if they have answered. Do I have to control it ?
  3. Who will distribute the barnstar? Me ? Where can I find it?

Thank you very much for your answer. --Eponimm (talk) 12:27, 13 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia Asian Ambassador English Wikipedia[edit]

Why the long delay in declaring the Asia Month Ambassador on English Wikipedia? or have you already done so?--Nvvchar (talk) 16:36, 15 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

We have not announced it since that is our final stage, currently working on address collection. But you can find ambassador on all Wikipedia at here. Thanks for you great job in EnWp.--AddisWang (talk) 19:20, 15 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hello AddisWang,

The photography contest Wiki Loves Earth organized last May is nominated for the "web event of the year" of the 9th edition of Morocco Web Awards

http://marocwebawards.com/mwa9/wiki-loves-earth-morocco/

Is it possible to create a banner for a 7-day period at CentralNotice to encourage people to vote ?

Wikipedia Asian Month postcards[edit]

Hello.

I've filled out the survey with my mailing address a month ago, and haven't received my postcards. I was wondering about the status of the postcards.

Thank you. --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 04:53, 24 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@MrLinkinPark333:Sorry, at this time only 2 out of 7 communities have sent postcards, while yours is not in that two as I just checked. Sending postcards require a lot of volunteers capability, so they are working on figuring out a date works for most volunteers. As rest of communities all give me a date that they will send postcards (before March 7th), I would expect you can receive your postcard around 2-3 weeks from now is the mailing service does not lose it.--AddisWang (talk) 19:57, 24 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@AddisWang: I've still haven't received the postcards. Could I check with you the address that I gave you, in case I made an error? --MrLinkinPark333 (talk) 19:13, 13 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@AddisWang: Hi Wang, I'm a member of the Wikipedia tiếng Việt - the Vietnamese community of Wikipedia. I've filled out the survey, and haven't received my postcard too. I've checked the Wikipedia Asian Month/2015 Qualified Editors/No Response, and my nickname wasn't in. It has been nearly a month since MrLinkinPark333's message, and three months since I completed the survey. I was wondering about the status of the postcards, and my personal information too.

Thank you. Levietduong (talk) 18:16, 6 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Levietduong:Hi, sorry to hear that you haven't received the postcard. According to my record, your postcard was sent at least a month ago. It is possible that your postcard is lost in postal service. It usually has 10% of loss rate according to my experience and varies in countries, and not something we can avoid. This risk has mentioned in the survey you filled. If you still don't receive it in next 60 days, please let me know, and we might make one up to you in WAM 2016. --AddisWang (talk) 18:56, 6 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@AddisWang: Feel sad to hear that, but I'll still wait for it. I'll let you know if something happens. Thanks Wang anyway. PS: It looks like the postcards sent to Vietnam are all stuck, because I've seen similar question to you from Namnguyenvn. Levietduong (talk) 20:55, 6 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Levietduong: Could you let me know if you have receivde the postcard, which is from Wikimedia Taiwan. Also Namnguyenvn did not provide address to me.--AddisWang (talk) 01:28, 26 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@AddisWang: Sorry Wang, I still did not have it yet. It's over 60 days, and I can understand if the postcard was lost in the transport. I will tell Namnguyenvn for you too, and he can provide his address for you to check.--Levietduong (talk) 16:51, 26 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Levietduong:I will put both of you on the list (if I receive address from Namnguyenvn) and you will get a small souvenir from pre-event of this year's Asian Month, could still be a postcard. Thanks for you to contribute the event and hope to see you this November as well.--AddisWang (talk) 18:53, 27 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@AddisWang:Thanks Wang, I'm very grateful for hearing that, and I'm very happy to participate in the 2016 Wikipedia Asian Month.--Levietduong (talk) 10:31, 28 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Inspire Campaign on content curation & review[edit]

I've recently launched an Inspire Campaign to encourage new ideas focusing on content review and curation in Wikimedia projects. Wikimedia volunteers collaboratively manage vast repositories of knowledge, and we’re looking for your ideas about how to manage that knowledge to make it more meaningful and accessible. We invite you to participate and submit ideas, so please get involved today! The campaign runs until March 28th.

All proposals are welcome - research projects, technical solutions, community organizing and outreach initiatives, or something completely new! Funding is available from the Wikimedia Foundation for projects that need financial support. Constructive feedback on ideas is welcome - your skills and experience can help bring someone else’s project to life. Join us at the Inspire Campaign to improve review and curation tasks so that we can make our content more meaningful and accessible! I JethroBT (WMF) 05:38, 29 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Tool for counting 300 words[edit]

Hello Addis, for Wikimedia CEE Spring 2016 we will need a tool which checks if an article has at least 300 words, could you help us with that? Thank you in advance, --Lord Bumbury (talk) 20:19, 1 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Kenrick95:Could you help?--AddisWang (talk) 04:02, 2 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Лорд Бъмбъри: Yeah sure, just complete the details of the following:
  • edit-a-thon name: Wikimedia CEE Spring 2016
  • project page title: Wikimedia CEE Spring 2016
  • page listing the participants: ...
  • page listing the organizers (for judge access): ...
  • any minimum page size (byte count, or word count)? word count at least 300 words
  • any date range of articles in which you wanted to count?
Thanks. Kenrick95 (talk) 14:58, 2 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • edit-a-thon name: Wikimedia CEE Spring 2016
  • project page title: Wikimedia CEE Spring 2016
  • page listing the participants: 20 different pages in 20 different Wikipedia language versions
  • page listing the organizers (for judge access): Template:Wikimedia CEE Spring 2016 Participating Countries and Organisers
  • any minimum page size (byte count, or word count)? word count at least 300 words Word count of 300 words
  • any date range of articles in which you wanted to count? 21 March to 31 May 2016
Thank you very much, Kenrick95! --Lord Bumbury (talk) 17:46, 2 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Лорд Бъмбъри:I think Kenrick wish to have the page link that shows all participants, thus he can put them into the tool. Many pages should fine I guess.--AddisWang (talk) 19:28, 2 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The list of participants will grow throughout the competition. We could create a page where local organisers add the names of the participants on their Wikipedias. Would that be fine? --Lord Bumbury (talk) 22:38, 2 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Лорд Бъмбъри: I would require something like Wikipedia Asian Month/Participants. It's fine to have local pages, but the tool can only read from 1 page, hence organizers need to update this "global" participants page. Kenrick95 (talk) 02:16, 3 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Kenrick95: I will provide such a list then. Thank you very much! --Lord Bumbury (talk) 15:59, 3 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Kenrick95: There is such a list now - here. It will grow over time. Would you set up your tool in a way that we could use it? Thank you in advance! --Lord Bumbury (talk) 10:14, 22 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Лорд Бъмбъри: Sorry for the delay, the tool is live at [1]. It's now in the process of requesting OAuth consumer token. Take note that I also made Wikimedia CEE Spring 2016/List of Organizers in the format that is understandable by the tool. The user data will be stored in "Wikimedia CEE Spring 2016/Judging/[wiki]/[username]" (e.g. Wikimedia CEE Spring 2016/Judging/bg.wikipedia.org/Drzewianin). Kenrick95 (talk) 12:09, 30 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you! I'll come back with questions. --Lord Bumbury (talk) 18:08, 30 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

WMF Blogpost on Asian Month[edit]

Hi Addis,

Sometime back we discussed possibility of writing a blog for Asian Month and even exchanged emails on the matter.

What happened later? Did you contact the proposed respondents or draft a blog separately? --Muzammil (talk) 14:12, 6 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Open Call for Individual Engagement Grants[edit]

There is an inquiry about Asian Month Prize Distribution from one of the Urdu Wikipedia participants - Urdu Wikipedia Asian Ambassador. I will appreciate if you could update on this. --Muzammil (talk) 19:16, 1 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Hindustanilanguage:Both of his postcards are sent, same as yours. We will distribute the digital ribbon bar once all postcards are sent. (Around second week of March)--AddisWang (talk) 04:04, 2 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@AddisWang: in User:AddisWang/WAM_progress you've mentioned that you are still collecting addresses for UrWiki. Please do let me know the names of the participants who've not sent their particulars so that I can also remind them.--Muzammil (talk) 14:00, 3 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Hindustanilanguage:I've correct it. All five address have been collected.--AddisWang (talk) 16:02, 3 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I just enter the address for sending post cards Asian Month Wikipedia. But at the first address I entered there was a little mistake in the address. Then I enter my address a second time. I hope only the second address are used as the first address was wrong and will likely never come to me. PecintaKpop (talk) 09:45, 10 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Request for Input - New Central Notice request process[edit]

Hello fellow CN admin!

Back in February I emailed the CN-admin list regarding part of my role to look into the Central Notice process and see where we could make improvements including: the campaign process; its functionality or lack thereof; and fundamentally the documentation that supports it. You can see many of the issues that I identified at CentralNotice/Process_Review. If there is anything additional that you feel has been left out then please feel free to leave any comments on the talk page.

My first task is to improve the requesting of campaigns by communities and affiliates. I am looking to set up a more formal request process, similar to those used in many projects. The aim is to: increase the transparency of Central Notice; improve the support provided to affiliates (including making such support more consistent); to provide a forum for community input into campaigns.

I have been working on a very rough strawman version of the process and I would be interested in hearing you comments about what such a process should involve and what you think it would require. Please feel free to leave such comments at the process talk page section. I would like to have a working page in place by the end of May. This would not need to be a final version. The process can be improved upon over time as we learn about how well it works.

I encourage you to:

Regards

Jseddon (WMF) (talk) Advancement Associate (Community Engagement) -- 02:44, 28 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Through June, we’re organizing an Inspire Campaign to encourage and support new ideas focusing on addressing harassment toward Wikimedia contributors. The 2015 Harassment Survey has shown evidence that harassment in various forms - name calling, threats, discrimination, stalking, and impersonation, among others - is pervasive. Available methods and systems to deal with harassment are also considered to be ineffective. These behaviors are clearly harmful, and in addition, many individuals who experience or witness harassment participate less in Wikimedia projects or stop contributing entirely.

Proposals in any language are welcome during the campaign - research projects, technical solutions, community organizing and outreach initiatives, or something completely new! Funding is available from the Wikimedia Foundation for projects that need financial support. Constructive feedback on ideas is appreciated, and collaboration is encouraged - your skills and experience may help bring someone else’s project to life. Join us at the Inspire Campaign so that we can work together to develop ideas around this important and difficult issue. With thanks,

I JethroBT (WMF) (talk) 17:46, 31 May 2016 (UTC) (Opt-out instructions)[reply]

Non-receipt of Asian Month postcard[edit]

Hello!

Most of the Urdu Wikipedians who participated in the Asian Month have received the postcard. However User:Mjadil hasn't received it till date. I request you to kindly look into this matter on urgent basis. --Muzammil (talk) 09:00, 11 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

User's confirmatory post[edit]

  • I have not yet received my post card for Asian Month. Neither by mail, nor on site. Pl. check into the matter and get back at earliest.

Waiting for earliest positive from your end.--Mjadil (talk) 05:59, 15 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • @Hindustanilanguage and Mjadil:I just double checked. It is likely that your postcard is lost due to the post service issue. Because there are some similar issues happens from one single postcard sending country, I can send you another one. Since none of our community is planning to send postcard, I can not give a time that it will be sent. But you should receive a new one if it successfully pass the postal service in two months.--AddisWang (talk) 16:36, 17 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

WAM - articles about the country of origin[edit]

Hi. I was the local organizer of WAM 2015 in Israel. I was asked how many articles were writen during WAM 2015 about the country of origin of the participates? For example, how many articles about Israel were writen during WAM by all the other wikipedias? Thank you. Ravit (talk) 13:14, 23 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Ravit:Sorry we did not ask organizers to collect this data, as it could be a lot of work (around 50 countries and regions in Asia), and we want to keep it simple. But we are exploring if there is a way that we can have automatic bot or tool that can figure out this data in upcoming WAM this year. --AddisWang (talk) 13:25, 23 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Of course, I meant a bot or a tool; its too hard to collect this data manually. Good luck with it this year, and thank you for everything you're doing in WAM. Ravit (talk) 17:28, 23 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Ravit:Thank you for organizing WAM on Hebrew Wikipedia!--AddisWang (talk) 20:29, 23 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Asian Month tool[edit]

Hi, I wonder if there is a Skype/whatever chat where we can discuss the WAM tool? I have a couple of questions/concerns, e. g. the tool I'm currently working on doesn't allow IP users to participate (since it's Labs-based), should I do anything with it or not? Grant advice[edit]

Hi Addis -- Hope you are well. I am looking forward to the upcoming event at the Guggenheim. Will you be able to attend? I hope so! Hope to see you then....

I am also writing because I wondered if I might be able to get your thoughts on what is a VERY preliminary Project Grant I am working on. When we talked I found your perspective and thoughts on approaches to funding and grants very helpful! All the best -- Erika aka BrillLyle (talk) 00:02, 29 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@BrillLyle:, Thanks for you help and organizing WAM event in NYC. I may not able to attend that simply because I need to support other local community that lack of capability of organizing similar event in their cities. I took a glance of your proposal and seems to be a good idea, though I'm not in that field that much. I will take a more close look and let you know if I can offer any idea.--AddisWang (talk) 00:39, 29 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Addis! Thanks for joining the Whose Knowledge user group - we’re so glad to have you involved!

Here are some updates about recent activities:

  • User group approved: Our user group was officially approved in October - hooray! Big thanks to Raystorm and FloNight for the idea to create a user group for the Whose Knowledge? campaign :)
  • Mapping feminist knowledge at AWID's 2016 Forum: Interested in learning more about what we’ve been doing lately? Read our blog post on what we learned from mapping feminist knowledge at Association for Women's Rights in Developments 2016 Forum.
  • New grant proposal:
    • We’ve proposed a WMF project grant. It would be great to have your feedback and/or endorsement by November 1 if this project interests you!
    • It would also be great to have your help notifying communities already working on systemic bias about this proposal. Here is a draft message to use if you'd like - please translate, change as you see fit for your own context, and share in any communities you’re active in on and off-wiki!

About Asian Month postcard, 2015[edit]

Hi AddisWang,

few days ago, i received your signed certificate of WAM via NahidSultan. but i don't yet received any postcard from any country. what's the matter? have a nice day. - Suvray (talk) 16:02, 20 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Suvray: Since we already destroy all the personal information, there is no way I can track if your postcard was sent or not, though it suppose to be sent half year ago (2 postcards from different countries since you are the ambassador; That makes its likely the problem of the postal service). I can not make a different standard and send you another postcard just because you asked, which will make people feel unfair, hope you understand that. --AddisWang (talk) 16:17, 20 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Suvray, I just found out your postcards are sent from Philipines and Indonesia. I will put your name on this page so we will make up one postcard for you at the end of the WAM this year.--AddisWang (talk) 16:12, 24 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
AddisWang, thanks for your comment(s). i'm still waiting for all of those countries POSTCARD which is related in WAM 2015. Sorry to say that i'm not from India but Bangladesh. thanks again for the success of future tour 'WAM 2016'. have a nice day. - Suvray (talk) 02:03, 25 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Suvray: I mean your postcards should came from India and Philippines. There are very low rate of losing from Philippines while relatively high rate from India. So we will make up the postcards sent from India.--AddisWang (talk) 15:10, 26 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Stabs[edit]

Hello, AddisWang! We have a lot of short articles about Asian countries (stabs). For exsempl w:ba:Вьетнам. We would want to expand these articles.--ZUFAr (talk) 04:02, 26 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@ZUFAr: You can, as long as it's meet the 3k bytes and 300 words increasing. But these may not supported by new judging tool, so in that case you have to manually checking the article and collect the statistic. I'm including User:Ле Лой here, so you guys can chat in Russian regarding the judging tool.--AddisWang (talk) 15:08, 26 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I can allow adding expanded articles, it's easy as a pie, but as far as I understand we'll only send postcards to article creators?.. If it's true, I need to indicate that somehow. Le Loy 23:46, 26 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hello Addis,

Thanks a lot for your invitation to me for Asian Month 2016 and apologies for late reply. Having been engaged in off-wiki activities related to wikipedia is taking up all my time. Hence I can not take up this responsibilities. I am announcing this on my language wiki so that somebody else who might be interested can take up this task.--Aniket (talk) 14:28, 28 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Aniket: Actually there is not much thing you need to do. You only need to translate the event page and Central Notice follow here. And maybe a few updates during the November and judging the articles in the end. It may take as less as one hour total for entire month to organize the Event. But you are welcome to invite other Wikipedians join the Wikipedia Asian Month. Best,--AddisWang (talk) 18:35, 28 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@AddisWang: An announcement for this has been ceated on Gujarati Wikipedia to join this event. Thanks & Regards--Aniket (talk) 06:01, 29 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Asian Month on French Wkipedia[edit]

Hello AddisWang. I just wanted to warn you that I won't have the time this year to organize the event on the French Wikipedia this year. I have a personal project which occupies me a lot at this time. I let a message on the French forum but for the moment nobody seems to be interested to organize it... Best regards --Eponimm (talk) 13:59, 29 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Eponimm:, No problem! Best Wishes to your project.--AddisWang (talk) 03:31, 30 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hello AddisWang. As I participed in 2015 WAM on the French Wikipedia, and as nobody can (until today) organize it over there the 2016 edition, I'd like to organize this one ; indeed, I feel it would be too bad not to have any edition on fr.wiki this year, and the 2015 edition really interested me. Anyway, I remembered the 2015 edition began around November 3rd
Is there any notices to open it ? Any difference between 2015 and 2016 WAM ?
Moreover, is it possible to both organize and participate ? I gathered some ideas of new articles during the year for this edition, waiting until this November.
Best regards. - Daxipedia - 達克斯百科 (d) 21:26, 31 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your answer.
The event page is now opened (the 2015 pages are archived), and I translated in French the Central Notice; well, the community is warned about the opening of the 2016 event.
Regards, - Daxipedia - 達克斯百科 (d) 17:05, 1 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I just translated the new rules on the « Participants » page as expected. I guess that the judging tool is not yet compatible with fr.wiki, and will be in the future, if I well understood ? Regards. - Daxipedia - 達克斯百科 (d) 21:45, 1 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
No problem, I just had the confirmation from Ле Лой that the tool is active . - Daxipedia - 達克斯百科 (d) 22:33, 1 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Daxipedia:Great! Thanks!--AddisWang (talk) 04:25, 2 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

WAM in ttwiki[edit]

Hi! We might use some help in getting Special:CentralNoticeBanners/edit/WAM_2016 activated for ttwiki. Landing page is created, necessary banner text is translated, local organizers identified.

Thank you in advance.--Frhdkazan (talk) 19:58, 29 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Frhdkazan: Thanks for organizing the Wikipedia Asian Month on ttwiki. The CN should be activated right now. Feel free to post any thoughts or questions here.--AddisWang (talk) 03:32, 30 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia Asian Month on pt-wiki[edit]

Hello, I'm interested in contributing to the Wikipedia Asian Month on my local wiki (portuguese), but there doesn't seem to be anyone currently organizing it there. I was wondering if I'd qualify for the local organizer position, and in case I do, what I should do to run the event. Thank you very much! --ArgonSim (talk) 14:49, 3 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you so much for your support! Given that there are some countries in Asia where Portuguese is an official language (Macau and East Timor, for instance), should I explicitly list them as invalid contributions?
PS: This is the same question I had left previously on my discussion page on pt-wiki, so there is no need to answer both of them. --ArgonSim (talk) 15:28, 3 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@AddisWang: I added a new organizer to WAM-pt. His name is Conde Dantes. Could you grant him jury rights on the tool, please? Am I the one who must update the number of active organizers here?
As mentioned before, when someone clicks the WAM Central Notice logo on the banner while accessing pt-wiki, it gets redirected to the corresponding page on en-wiki, which can be very misleading to inexperienced users. Is there a way to change the logo link to pt:WP:WAM, please? --ArgonSim (talk) 17:08, 4 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@ArgonSim: Done. No that's the record for me. So you don't have to update it. I will take a look and see if I can fix it. --AddisWang (talk) 23:03, 4 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@ArgonSim: Do you want the tool to be set as only articles fulfill both 3000 bytes and 300 words can be submitted? Currently it's either one.--AddisWang (talk) 23:09, 4 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@AddisWang: Thank you! Please, if you could set it in a way that only articles that fulfill both criteria can be submitted, that'd be much appreciated. Are you also the one who sets an interface translation for the tool? I've already translated the tool to portuguese (here). --ArgonSim (talk) 23:20, 4 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@ArgonSim: Done.--AddisWang (talk) 14:17, 5 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@AddisWang: Thanks! Have you had any luck fixing the central notice logo redirect? Clicking the drawing on the left is still redirecting to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wikipedia_Asian_Month --ArgonSim (talk) 21:44, 5 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@ArgonSim: I think the provlem is now fixed. Thanks!--AddisWang (talk) 15:05, 7 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@AddisWang: It really is. Thanks! --ArgonSim (talk) 15:15, 7 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@AddisWang: The talk template has been localised to pt:Predefinição:WAM talk 2016 ArgonSim (talk) 00:44, 8 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
By the way, we were wondering whether this template is gonna be added automatically by the tool and if it will only be in articles that were approved or if it's gonna be included in all submissions. There is also a new pt-organizer, his name is Guilherme Moura. Could you grant him jury tools, please? --ArgonSim (talk) 12:17, 8 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@ArgonSim: Will do. Template will be added automatically as submitted. --AddisWang (talk) 14:37, 8 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@AddisWang: There is a new organizer on pt-wiki, his name is Contreiras45. Could you grant him access to the jury tool, please? --ArgonSim (talk) 17:49, 12 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@ArgonSim: Will do--AddisWang (talk) 00:14, 13 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia Asian Month on Serbo-Croatian Wikpedia[edit]

Hi, I noticed that your competition is not available on all projects (e.g. Serbo-Croatian Wikipedia). Does it mean that if we want to participate we need to be active on some other project (e.g. English Wikipedia) or you still can open this great idea for editors on other projects? I just translated article on National Library of China to Serbo-Croatian and I think that there is a lot of space for translation of other interesting content and making it available for individuals in the region who do not speak English or Asian languages.--MirkoS18 (talk) 18:57, 4 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@MirkoS18: Thanks for your interest in Wikipedia Asian Month. We would like to have Serbo-Croatian Wikipedia join our project but we are lacking of local organizers to do so. If you are interested in help organizing Wikiepdia Asian Month and translate the event page to Serbo-Croatian Wikipedia, that would be great! Please let me know if you have any question, concern or thought.--AddisWang (talk) 20:06, 4 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I just started a non-formal conversation/initiative with editor(s) on our project. I think we have some people who are much more experienced and fit much better to lead the Wikipedia Asia Month on our project (who already done some great job in creating and translating relevant contents). Of course I am ready to help them with translation and to be active participant once we start. If you have time can you just tell me what are minimum (and optimal) requirements (tasks) that we will have to fulfill in order to participate successfully? I guess there is more to be done then just to translate project page into Serbo-Croatian.--MirkoS18 (talk) 20:25, 4 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@MirkoS18: Here are several things you need to do in order to set it up. We will send you an additional postcard to thanks organizers.
  1. Step 1, make sure your event page is fully set up and translated. Link to the Sample page (You need to localize This template)
  2. Step 2, translate the banner at here, make sure tranlsate the link to the event page of your home wiki.
  3. Step 3, when you finish the two steps, update this page. When both "Main Page" and "CN"(tranlsation) marked as done, I will enbale the CN in your language all the way to the end of November.
  4. After this, please also intrgrated this message on the event page so participate can know how does the event works. We will set up the judging tool once you've finished this.
  1. Please submit your articles via this tool. Click 'log in' at the top-right and OAuth will take care the rest. You can also change the interface language at the top-right.
  2. Once you submit an article, the tool will add a template to the article and mark it as needing review by an organizer. You can check your progress using the tool, which includes how many accepted articles you have.
  3. Participants who achieve 4 accepted articles will receive a Wikipedia Asian Month postcard. You will receive another special postcard if you achieve 15 accepted articles. The Wikipedian with the highest number of accepted articles on the Serbo-Croatian Wikipedia will be honored as a "Wikipedia Asian Ambassador", and will receive a signed certificate and additional postcard.
  4. If you have any problems accessing or using the tool, you can submit your articles at this page next to your username.
  5. If you have any question, you can take a look at our Q&A or post on the WAM talk page. --AddisWang (talk) 23:05, 4 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I just notived that we already have this page.--MirkoS18 (talk) 01:01, 5 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@MirkoS18: yeah last year this user machine translated our event page to all Wikipedia project.--AddisWang (talk) 14:16, 5 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@MirkoS18: You still need to get the page updated and tranlsated for this year's edition.--AddisWang (talk) 05:00, 6 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Organizador na Wikipédia em Espanhol/ Organizer on Wikipedia in Spanish[edit]

Original

Olá, vos informo que estou interessado em ser organizador na Wikipédia em Espanhol durante o evento do mês asiático na Wikipédia, também na Wikipédia em português.

Hi, I want to warn you I have interest be one organizer on the Wikipedia in Spanish under the Wikipedia Asian Month, and on Wikipédia in Spanish. (Carlos Emanuel) (talk) 20:56, 5 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, @(Carlos Emanuel): I added you as a brazilian organizer (since I don't know your nationality) here and here. @AddisWang:, could you grant him access to the jury tool as well, please? Thanks!
By the way, you're gonna have to get in touch with one of the organizers on the Spanish Wikipedia in order to also participate there (Sky Harbor and Allan Aguillar) --ArgonSim (talk) 21:53, 5 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Access granted in PT, (Carlos Emanuel), I need conformation from either Sky Harbor or Allan Aguillar to add you in ES. Le Loy 23:30, 5 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I've contacted Allan Aguillar here. (Carlos Emanuel) (talk) 00:10, 6 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I think Allan Aguillar ok with it. @Ле Лой: --AddisWang (talk) 04:50, 6 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Done. Le Loy 04:57, 6 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
And please give to Conde Dantes the jury tool access in es.wiki, he requested to me in pt.wiki [2]. 2804:14C:147:810A:804B:936C:2838:8284 16:26, 7 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
In order to become a judge, you need contact the main organizer User:Allan Aguilar and get confirm. Organziers should have suffient experience on that language Wikipedia and language proficiencey. User:Conde Dantes seems does not have many edits on eswp, thus its better to get other organziers' comfirmation.--AddisWang (talk) 17:40, 7 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Request[edit]

Hi, I am the organizer of WAM in ta wiki. Some one asked me to reduced the rules of WAM in ta wiki. So I've palnned reduce the rule like

- The articles over 230 words and more than 12,000 bytes is acceptable.

Do you agree with is rule? and I want your Reply.--Shriheeran (talk) 05:24, 6 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Please reach a consensus with User:Dineshkumar_Ponnusamy before making any changes.--AddisWang (talk) 20:51, 6 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Shriheeran Last year also we had the same discussion and concluded 300 words will be final. You can check the page here. I believe that there is no necessity to change the rule. Last year, We got around 236 qualified articles with 23 contestants. Hopefully this year we will get more participants and articles than that. --Dineshkumar Ponnusamy (talk) 20:56, 7 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

About the Talk Template in Malayalam Wikipedia[edit]

Dear Addiswang in Malayalam wikipedia we have already an established template management, article count, category execution system for edit-a-thon in Malayalam wikipedia with automatic quarry. We already created another template to manage AsianMonth2016. Should we need to create another template ? Also is there any automatic mechanism to pick the articles from that category insted of adding the articles into the judging tool manually. Another thing if we exclude India a lot is missing for Us. Because here in India we have nearly 22 official languages and much more unofficial. We are planned to exclude Kerala where Malayalam is speaking. Is that sufficient ? Plz replay quick. we are going to an offline event. --Ranjithsiji (talk) 15:43, 6 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

  • another concern - can any other user can add an article into the judging tool. Is it necessary that the user who cerated the article must add the article into the judging tool. If any other way then please comment --Ranjithsiji (talk) 06:11, 7 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Ле Лой: Can you take a look of this. So I'm not sure about the judging tool. But if you feel better with your own quarry, I guess you can keep using it, but you need come back with all the statistics to us for the global result, which is automatically handled by the judging too. You can also submit articles by judging tool as a way to make statistics. According to the rules, not just Malayalam but all Indian language will exclude India. Becuase the idea is we want to help get coverage on the content people less attention. I hope you can thinking about that and considering still exclude India topics on Malayalam topic. Asian Month should not split India in any cases.--AddisWang (talk) 14:33, 7 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Dear Addiswang, thanks for your quick clarification. I just linked our template to the wikidata so the statistics part will go throught the judging tool. We are not going on our own way. The template looks a little different than the one suggested. The problem we are facing is people (who are writing the article) are not technically that much sound. So the are not submitting the articles to the judging tool. Is there any way to add articles into the judging tool for a co-ordinator like me? Also thanks for the clarification of rules that excluding India for Malayalam. If you can suggest a way to add articles to the tool then I am Happy. Regards--Ranjithsiji (talk) 03:31, 8 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Ranjithsiji:If people don't want to/ can not submit articles to the judging tool, just let them post on participate page, and we will add these articles to the judging tool at the end of the WAM all together. Otherwise I guess you will just ask people try to submit their contributions to the judging tool, and we will place the template as you wanted. Thanks!--AddisWang (talk) 14:35, 8 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Update WAM SvWp[edit]

Hello! I need help judging SvWp, as almost half of the articles are made by me, and a judge can't make judgement on his own articles. Deryni (talk) 07:50, 13 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Second thought: Best thing should be to look for another judge at SvWp. I think I can find one. OK!? Deryni (talk) 09:24, 13 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Deryni: Yeah it would be a better way if you can find another organizer, who has sufficient experience on SvWp. If by the end of the event there is no one judge your articles, I will step in and help.--AddisWang (talk) 15:34, 13 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Fine, that's an easy one. I then suggest Bairuilong as a second judge for SvWp. Deryni (talk) 16:18, 13 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Deryni: Yeah ask this user to see if has interest in organizing.--AddisWang (talk) 19:07, 13 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
He has already answered with a big YES! Deryni (talk) 19:20, 13 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Deryni: Ok I will add him on judging tool later today.--AddisWang (talk) 19:24, 13 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@AddisWang: Don't forget to add Bairuilong on the judging tool. Deryni (talk) 05:36, 16 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Deryni: Ha forget that one. Will do now!--AddisWang (talk) 05:37, 16 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

My humble request is to join me in the jury to review articles on Marathi Wikipedia asian month and add me too in upcoming global events for the Marathi language --Tiven2240 (talk) 13:49, 14 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Tiven2240: That would be great. Does Marathi Wikipedia currently has a event page or not. If not, please Set-up an event page on local Wikipedia. (You can use this well-designed sample page, localized this template is required)--AddisWang (talk) 15:07, 14 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@AddisWang: It has a event page which can be found Here The tool to to submit articles can be found here Here.Add me to the jury of the same

@Tiven2240:I've update the MrWp event page, can you translate the page so we can have a local event page on MrWp. Each Wikipedia runs WAM individually.--AddisWang (talk) 18:11, 14 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I have now translated the whole project page and participants page into Marathi now | Am i now an organizer of the WAM Marathi? as I haven't received any info on my talkpage . Can I be added into jury of marathi Wikipedia WAM ? Waiting for positive feedback. (Tiven2240 (talk) 06:53, 15 November 2016 (UTC))[reply]
@Tiven2240: yes, thanks for doing that. I've already asked the developer to add your name, will take a few hours though. Also I add you to the organizer list so you will able to receive the updates sent from me. BTW, can you translate this message so we can get more people participate--AddisWang (talk) 14:46, 15 November 2016 (UTC).[reply]

I have translated the page u said me to translate above and Please add me to the Marathi language edition and not on the Portuguese language as I seen u added me in the wrong language as I have no idea of Portuguese language so kindly so the needful and in that translation page there is a link u have given to translate according to me that link should not be translated orelse it may not work properly (please take note of it) --Tiven2240 (talk) 15:22, 15 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Tiven2240: It's copy&paste mistake. Now fixed. Judging tool will appear your name later today as our developer is likely sleeping right now.--AddisWang (talk) 15:28, 15 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@AddisWang: I have a person on MrWp who has 4 accepted articles what is the procedure next about him --Tiven2240 (talk) 17:11, 24 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Tiven2240: I will get data from the judging tool and send all people with 4 accepted articles a link to submit their mailling address.--AddisWang (talk) 22:11, 25 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Article submission[edit]

Hi AddisWang, I am a WAM organizer from Sinhala wikipedia. In our Wikipedia few of participants have submitted their articles through this page without using the given tool I want to know is it compulsory to submit our article only through this tool and the articles those have been submitted through manual way are acceptable or not? These articles are not included in this statistical page also. Thank you--L Manju (talk) 04:30, 15 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@L Manju: The best way for us is asking everyone using the tool, unless they can't for some reason. So both of us does not need to deal with statistics and other works. We can manual do it but it's still best for contributor to do it.--AddisWang (talk) 04:33, 15 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Yes that is true. I have already encouraged them to use the given tool. Thanks dear--L Manju (talk) 04:36, 15 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Question about how to judge WAM-articles on Danish Wikipedia[edit]

Hello AddisWang. There have been submittet several articles to WAM from Danish Wikipedia. I am organizer there, but I don't know how I can accept the articles which meet the criteria? Best regards --EileenSanda (talk) 10:53, 16 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@EileenSanda: If you go to this page and click log in at the top-right; You should see a button called "Judge" next to the "Submit". Then you can start to judging article by marking them yes or no. Let me know if you still have problems. Best, --AddisWang (talk) 00:52, 17 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Hello again. Sorry, I just found out by myself just now, I found the "Judge" tool when I added another article, and I found out how to manage it, but thanks for you answer :) No problem now, thanks. --EileenSanda (talk) 00:58, 17 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@EileenSanda: Nice!--AddisWang (talk) 00:59, 17 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@AddisWang: Could you make Palnatoke a judge on the Danish Wikipedia, so he can help me to judge the articles there? I have asked him, and he has accepted. I have added three articles (until now) to the project, and I can't judge articles, which I have written. --EileenSanda (talk) 12:37, 18 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

WAM 2016 banner image in French[edit]

Hello, on the French WP Village Pump an IP noticed that in the French translation of the campaign or banner WAM 2016 you created, the image is in English c:File:WAM 2016 Banner.png though a French translation exists c:File:WAM 2016 Banner-fr.png. May I also add that the French text "En ce novembre, c'est" is a bit awkward, I would rather say "Ce mois de novembre est". Thank you in advance! Oliv0 (talk) 07:13, 18 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Daxipedia: What do you think about the wording?
@Oliv0: I will take a look to see if its something we can do.--AddisWang (talk) 14:10, 18 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Hello/Salut @Oliv0:
I didn't find the good catchphrase when I translated it from English here, wasn't (and still not) inspired. By the way, I just changed for your version. - Daxipedia - 達克斯百科 (d) 19:33, 18 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

How to submit article for WAM[edit]

Hi, please help me with my queries.

  1. If I create wiki page using an Asian language will it be counted as valid contribution or the language needs to be English only?
  2. Translation of English page to an English language- will this be counted as a valid article contribution? (Making sure it's not mechanically copied)
  3. Who will be reviewing and deciding whether the articles are valid? So that if there's a conflict in understanding we can sort that out. Tirtha04 (talk) 23:45, 21 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Tirtha04: Hi there, may I know which language you're interested participating in?
  1. Yeah, there are a lot of Wikipedia Asian Months in local languages (see here for the full list of WAMs). Here you could sign up at the local page there. For each of the local WAM, there should be a link to submit article. But if you could not find if, you could go to this tool and find the local WAM and submit it there (after "login" (located at top-right corner of page)).
  2. As long as it is accepted by the Wikipedia community as a valid article and it also passes the criteria set by the local judges, it will be accepted.
  3. There will be human judges from the local WAM events that will be judging your articles.
Let me know if there is any more question. Kenrick95 (talk) 15:40, 22 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Qualified Users on ja.wp[edit]

Users ja:User:ネイ, ja:User:コケ, ja:User:Akiyama(tentative), ja:User:ねをなふみそね, ja:User:の2の2, ja:User:Mizuhara gumi and ja:User:J Country Woman have already contributed equal or more than 4 articles. You can ask them addresses for postcards. Yay! --Takot (talk) 15:55, 23 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Takot: That means they have more than 4 articles "accepted" right? not just conributed.--AddisWang (talk) 19:41, 23 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

WAM organiser on the Faroese Wikipedia[edit]

Hello AddisWang. I am currently the only organiser on the Faroese Wikipedia and also the only contributer until now. Could we get another organiser as well, so that he can judge my articles? I have asked the user Palnatoke from the Danish Wikipedia, if he can judge the articles on the Faroese Wikipedia, created by me, and he has accepted. Thanks in advance. Best regards --EileenSanda (talk) 14:23, 25 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The lamentable situation of the event in Wikipedia in Spanish.[edit]

Cumprimentos.

English

Hi AddisWang, I'm here to discuss with you the manner I should act as an organizer in the Wikipedia in Spanish. Some days ago, I went to the submission tool, and I refused some articles, based on this: — In a nutshell: “New Article, about Asia, good quality, 3,000 bytes and 300 words minimum, created during November, 2016 and not a list.” ; all the disapproved articles were with under 300 words, after, they opened a discussion, and I undo the most of my actions.

It happen that there, we have three organizers and hundreds of articles to review, they did not hold much for the quality of their articles.

Here are the asks: I can reject articles with under 300 words? And when the article have references in the end and have not notes? And when the article have paragraphs without citation? (because give more work, whenever that's happen I need search the content in all the sources to check if it is real, while with the citation is more easy search in the source) The community of the wiki can decide their own rules? Greetings.

Organizer removal[edit]

Hello, I come to inform you that the user (Carlos Emanuel) was locked, after a check point him as a puppet of Matheus de Sousa Lopes (User blocked globally). The account (Carlos Emanuel) is the organizer of the Asian month in some Wiki, I believe it is in Portuguese and Spanish. If possible, please remove this user as an organizer. Conde Dantes (talk) 03:39, 27 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@AddisWang: I also support Conde Dantes' position on removing (Carlos Emanuel) from the list of both es and pt-wiki organizers. Since his account has been blocked, there is no way he could access Fountain and judge the articles submitted, so there is no point in keeping him as part of the jury. --ArgonSim (talk) 09:55, 29 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry but I still can use the jury tool in pt.wiki ;). (Carlos Emanuel) (talk) 12:53, 29 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Has WAM over?[edit]

Has WAM 2016 got over as I can't access the tool it's showing DNS error -Tiven2240 (talk) 09:19, 30 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Tiven2240: No it's justa DNS error. It ends at UTC time 12:59PM. You can submit contribution at here: Wikipedia Asian Month/late submit--AddisWang (talk) 14:07, 30 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Reg page of WAM status[edit]

I've received your message about updating the WAM status page . There is something like cn translate and CN activation please send me the link for the same for MARATHI wikipedia WAM so I may do the needful --Tiven2240 (talk) 08:14, 1 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Tiven2240: Since the WAM of this year has ended, there is no need to set up CN.--AddisWang (talk) 02:09, 2 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Alternative article submission page[edit]

Is it really necessary to submit the articles here? There is already a dedicated discussion page on pt-wiki in case the tool stops working (here). Will new articles be accepted until 23:59, 2 December 2016 (UTC)? --ArgonSim (talk) 14:31, 30 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@ArgonSim: No. That's just the easier that the developer only need to monitor one page rather than a lot. We will manually add articles from the Participants page.--AddisWang (talk) 15:59, 30 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
And what about the deadline? Will it be postponed to 23:59 2 December 2016 (UTC) or will only articles submitted before 23:59 1 December 2016 (UTC) be accepted? I really need to know that because there is someone on pt-wiki asking the time limit for submissions. --ArgonSim (talk) 16:04, 30 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@ArgonSim: The article has to be created and finished before November 30th 23:59 (UTC); But in case people forget to submit, or other reason, they can submit these articles before December 2nd, 23:59 (UTC)--AddisWang (talk) 16:06, 30 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the clarification! I'll be manually updating this list with pt-wiki articles, then. --ArgonSim (talk) 16:14, 30 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Postcards[edit]

I saw that many have asked about this already, but mine hasn't been addressed to this year yet. When will the postcards be handed out? I submitted 4 articles on the English version, and was just wondering since I did. Thanks. Horsegeek (talk) 23:58, 1 December 2016 (UTC)Horsegeek[reply]

@Horsegeek: Yes. Once you articles are accepted, you are qualified to receive a postcad. We will do a address collection soon and plan to send all postcards before end of next January. --AddisWang (talk) 02:08, 2 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Name present on Postcard[edit]

Hello! What "Name present on Postcard" means in Google form? --Artificial123 (talk) 08:09, 3 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Artificial123: Some people may need to provide a name other than user name to ensure he can receive the postcard. (E.g. The address shared by many people) AddisWang (talk) 08:16, 3 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

And we will not associated your user name with your address when send it to local community to send postcard. So you need to provide a name even it's same to your user nameAddisWang (talk) 08:19, 3 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Pending articles on late submit and error 500[edit]

Hey, I just wanted to inform you that one of the users who submitted an article through the late submit page (Lukano1602) is now eligible for a post-card, since that's his fourth article. Could you also collect his address, please?

By the way, one of the organizers is having trouble with changing his vote on two particular articles, as I described previously on Ле Лой's page. Could you have a look on that, please? Maybe manually re-adding these two articles instead would be a faster way to fix the problem? --ArgonSim (talk) 09:15, 3 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@ArgonSim: There will be several rounds of address collection, so we can make the process faster. Le Loy is pretty busy right now since there are so many un-added articles, and some similar error message. Sorry if the response is delayed.--AddisWang (talk) 16:53, 3 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Postcard for Asian month participation[edit]

Dear AddisWang, thank you for notifying me about the address needed. However, I do not wish to trouble anyone for the mailing. I think it would be very nice to be recognized on my user Talk page, though. Maybe those of us who are eligible to receive a postcard could receive a banner note from Asian Month on our WP Talk pages, if this would be OK? I'm glad the project was another success this year, thanks for all your hard work!--Bonnielou2013 (talk) 18:02, 4 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding Post card for Asian Month[edit]

I think it'd be nice to get the postcard as a scanned copy in e-mail. Or, it'd be nice if the scanned postcard'd be uploaded to commons.

Thanks, from nepali wiki.

Address collection[edit]

Hi Addis, Congratulations on the very successful WAM 2016! I've seen emails about address collection on other user's talkpages but not mine. I did create 4 articles which I thought met the requirements. I uploaded 3 using the tool, and listed the 4th next to my name as I couldn't upload it (and Ipigott had a note suggesting that if users can't upload, they can write the article name next to their username). Did I miss a step? --Rosiestep (talk) 16:18, 5 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

@Rosiestep:Yeah you are fine. Our developer has to add these articles manually into the tool and it will take some time. We will have several rounds of address collecting so no worries.--AddisWang (talk) 18:01, 5 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Addis! --Rosiestep (talk) 18:20, 5 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Some late questions[edit]

Hello Addis,

At the moment I'm writing it, I have not finished yet to judge the articles, but have already identified who is the 2016 fr.wiki Ambassador, the 2nd Ambassador, and who is eligible to receive one or two postcards. I aim for achieving the final judging before this Friday ; I was busy on the last 2 weekends, and judgigng alone took more time than I thought, also I've maybe been too strict for some articles and waited too long to valid them.

Then, can you also give to the user Apollinaire93 the judging rights on fr.wiki, as he volunteered to judge my 4 articles (and as I can't accept my own articles).

Regards, thanks by advance. - Daxipedia - 達克斯百科 (d) 23:10, 6 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi AddisWang, thanks for your announcement for collecting my address for dilivering postcard. I took a quick look back about my result and notified that two of my articles (Di tích quốc gia của Singapore) and Media Prima did not receive the marks because they contained less than 300 words. But, please make a double-check, actually, they pass this requirement. Furthermore, according to the rule for WAM in the Vietnamese Wikipedia page (https://vi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Tháng_châu_Á_Wikipedia), I will receive a special postcard, along with the ordinary postcard, if I create more than 15 accepted articles. I pass that number, but your announcement only inform me about the mininum number of 4 to get the ordinary postcard, will I also get that special one ? • Women's Human Rights Defenders: In partnership with Urgent Action Fund, we'll be supporting a group of women's human rights defenders around the world with more mapping and wiki content creation. Themes and geographies coming soon!
  • Kumeyaay Wikipedia Initiative: Following the 2016 Indigenous People's Day edit-a-thon, we're continuing to work with members of the Kumeyaay tribe in Southern California and Baja to map and contribute indigenous knowledge to Wikimedia projects. A discussion day with Kumeyaay community in San Diego is being planned for May.

3. Funding

We've got financial support for 2017!

  • WMF grant: 6-month funding (February-July 2017) was approved to pilot our approach to mapping knowledge and creating Wikipedia content with the Dalit community and global women's human rights defenders. Thanks for all your endorsements!
  • Shuttleworth Fellowship: Anasuya is a Shuttleworth Fellow! This means we'll be able to spend more time organizing, and have support for convenings, campaign infrastructure, etc.

4. Wikimedia Strategy

Find us at Wikimedia Conference.

  • Anasuya and Siko will be carrying the Whose Knowledge? vision of diversity, pluralism and representation of marginalized communities into movement strategy conversations in Berlin March 2017.
  • What's your vision for the Wikimedia movement? If you have a perspective that you'd like us to help represent in Berlin, please reach out and let us know!

Ohio Wikimedians User Group: February 2017 newsletter[edit]

Welcome to the first edition of the Ohio Wikimedians User Group newsletter!

General Updates

Things have been quiet with our User Group, though that should soon change! Please take a glance at the following updates:
  • This is the first monthly newsletter of the Ohio Wikimedians User Group. From here on out, each letter will detail the previous month's activities, as well as keep members informed of upcoming events in the Wikimedia community.
  • We'd like to get monthly virtual meetings up and running soon. If you're interested, please express your interest at the talk page.
  • Our homepage has been updated with a new banner, information, upcoming events, and more. Members now have markers to mark what organizational parts of the User Group they are involved with. If you'd like to get involved in newsletter drafting (see March's!), social media management, or event coordination, feel free to add a marker next to your name.
We are a new organization and there are plenty of directions for us to pursue. If you have any ideas, thoughts, or suggestions for the organization, don't hesitate to open a discussion on our talk page.

No postcard delivered yet?[edit]

Good day. I have been informed last December that a postcard for participation in the Wikipedia Asian Month will be given to me. However, I still have not received it yet. Could it be possible to provide update about it? If needed, I can provide another mailing address (Philippines). Thank you for the swift response. --Arius1998 (talk) 03:50, 22 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Arius, I did receive an envelope. It had scanned copy of Wiki Asian Month Certificate. You should be getting within this month. :) Keep rocking.

Asian Month- Wikipedia Asian Month[edit]

Hello , i am Md Takiul Hasan Sakib মোঃ তাকিউল হাসান সাকিব .I submitted 4 articles on the Bangla version. I submitted my first three contents using the tool but when I tried to submit my next content there was something wrong, then I did contact with Bangla Wikipedia. They gave me the following link to submit my content, They said to me 'it will count it with my other contents'.But I successfully played my role. Now, Wikipedia Asian month is over but I didn't get any postcard or message. it was totally disappointing for me. My friends got their postcard.

When will I receive the postcard?[edit]

I live in India. I had filled up the form. 4 months have passed. I have not received the postcard yet. When will I receive the postcard? Che12Guevara (talk) 13:40, 21 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Che12Guevara: Your postcard is supposedly sent from South Korea in February. Let me double check on that.--AddisWang (talk) 09:29, 29 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@AddisWang: Thanks!!! Please let me know after checking! Che12Guevara (talk) 15:12, 29 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Che12Guevara: They confirmed your postcard is sent around a month ago. Maybe @NahidSultan: can find a way to make up one postcard for you. But there is no guarantee. We find poor postal service in South Asia has caused many people did not receive the postcard.--AddisWang (talk) 12:01, 1 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@AddisWang: OK, I'll notify you if I receive any postcard. It would be great if @NahidSultan: could send a postcard. Che12Guevara (talk) 14:38, 1 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia Asian Month - Postcards for Vietnamese member[edit]

Hi Addis, I just want to ask you about the postcard for WAM. I received the message of you via the MediaWiki Message Delivery on January, and I sent full information of mine, but now is March and I haven't even received any postcard yet. It's the second year of WAM and this still happens. I don't want to disturb, just to remind you about that.

Please reply me soon. Best regard, --Levietduong (talk) 14:44, 23 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Levietduong: I sent a special postcard to you by myself from the U.S. in February, and I remember the address you gave to me is very long so I printed two tags and put on the postcard. I also concerned that long address is problematic because postcard is basic postal service and they won't call you in most situations. Is there any chance you have an easier address, eg. mailbox, company or institution address. I can try another time. If all other thing failed, and I have extra budget, I will send you a certified mail.--AddisWang (talk) 09:25, 29 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@AddisWang: I'm very sorry to hear that, it's so hard for you. I have an address of my friend in US, and I don't know if you are in US or not, but if you can, please send the postcard to this address and they will send it to me. I will send the address's information to your personal email box on Meta, and I will let you know when I receive the postcard. Please reply me soon. Best regard,--Levietduong (talk) 12:33, 31 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Levietduong: Just sent you an Email. --AddisWang (talk) 20:36, 31 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@AddisWang: Ok, thank you so much.--Levietduong (talk) 20:54, 31 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@AddisWang: Hi Addis, maybe a little late but I want to say thank you after all. My friend received the postcard at the end of April, but she was busy and forgot telling me, and she only told me a few weeks before she was about to return to Vietnam (at the begin of August). I will leave some pictures in here and here, and hope to see you again in 2017 WAM!--Levietduong (talk) 07:35, 21 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Levietduong:Great! Glad everything worked out finally!--AddisWang (talk) 13:11, 23 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Asian Month[edit]

Hi, last year I ended in second position in the Spanish Asian Month competition, but it has been nearly five months and neither the postcards nor the diploma have arrived. I reckon I submitted my address correctly; maybe there has been some kind of technical difficulty. Best wishes, Macesito (talk) 15:53, 27 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Macesito: I sent you an email through wikimedia but did not get the response, hence I can not write the certificate. Can you send me a email thru "email the user" and tell me what is the name you wish to appear on the certificate? I sent all the special postcards and I remember sent you one. If you can send me your address in the email, I will doublt check if the mailing address is wrong. Thanks for joining the Wikipedia Asian Month! Best, AddisWang (talk) 08:19, 29 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Email[edit]

I'm looking in my inbox, but can't find any email. The only survey I took was this, which I'm taking again. I am very sorry if something has gone wrong and, if it has been my fault, I sincerely apologize

@Macesito: No it's not your fault. It's could be MediaWiki system did not send the email. I got your response already, but I need to write a name on the certificate. Most people choose using their real name but discuss about it on wiki leak the privacy. So I using emails. Ok, do you want me use the name in your response (first name start with J) on the certificate?--AddisWang (talk) 12:41, 29 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@AddisWang: Yes, there's not any problem about that. If that helps you, I reached 55 (second position) articles in Spanish, while 46 (third) in Catalan. Thank you.
@Macesito: Ok I will send you the digital copy soon. Can you send a email to me so I know your email address. Best,--AddisWang (talk) 14:39, 30 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Chinese Wikinews[edit]

Hello. I notice that Chinese Wikinews has been mostly copying articles from Voice of America, which has released its articles in the public domain. Latest ones are zh:n:香港民主党:一国两制走样变形 and zh:n:江苏徐州幼儿园门口发生爆炸致8死65伤 警方判为刑事案件. Well... nothing wrong with that; other articles have synthesized sources from others. However, creativity is essential, yet I see Chinese articles copying ones from VOA. I don't know what to do about the VOA/Chinese Wikinews situation.

Also, I notice that one bot is creating so many brief news, like zh:n:2017年6月18日香港報紙頭條 and zh:n:2017年6月18日臺灣報紙頭條.

What do you think should I do about those situations? --George Ho (talk) 17:11, 18 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@George Ho: Something is more than nothing, right? Wikinews is relatively a low active project that lacks volunteers to participate. For sure we should pursue the creativity, but no by cutting off the contribution (even very small) that some volunteers already did. For the brief news, I don't know much about it. I assume that's some kind of tradition from English Wikinews? Do you have any idea of how can we improve the Chinese Wikinews community from this stage? Best, --AddisWang (talk) 03:32, 2 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Lately, English Wikinews rarely or hasn't posted any article copied from VOA. Before suggesting anything, I'll ping Pi zero for his opinions on this. --George Ho (talk) 03:37, 2 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@AddisWang and George Ho: Here are a few comments, which may be of interest.
  • VOA is a propaganda outlet. News sites that put their output in the public domain, like VOA, are very likely to be propaganda. So English Wikinews is very careful when using a VOA article as one of the sources for a synthesis article. We use all sources with caution for their particular weaknesses and biases, deliberate or unconscious; if we limited our sources to truly unbiased ones, we would have no sources to draw on. VOA just requires more caution that some other sources would.
  • We don't republish articles from elsewhere. Those other sources don't need us to publicize their work; and we figure our purpose is to produce content that has added value. By drawing on sources with varied perspectives, we can better recognize their biases, and produce more neutral articles, as well as sometimes more in-depth and even more accurate ones.
  • Serbian Wikinews for several years used a bot to import and publish articles from free sources like VOA. It damaged their community. Before the bot they were growing; once the bot was put in place they shrank; and they produced a large archive (much larger than the English Wikinews archive), but it's not an archive that gets read, whereas the English Wikinews archive is extensively read.
I don't pretend to know the special circumstances of Chinese Wikinews. But these are some things that we take into account on English Wikinews. --Pi zero (talk) 05:45, 2 July 2017 (UTC)[reply]

World Women Contest[edit]

Hi there. I'm planning on running this world contest in November to coincide with Asian month. Though it will be for anywhere I anticipate it might contribute to your own effort and we see even more Asian women bios done. I'm having trouble finding somebody to code a bot, all I need is a bot to check article length and no unsourced paragraphs. I've been informed that you have something operating for the Asian mnonth entries. Is there any chance you can help me?Dr. Blofeld (talk) 16:33, 6 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I will talk to our team since we are not stepping into the preparation yet and let you know.--AddisWang (talk) 06:57, 15 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding interwiki links that about WAM on Wikidata[edit]

Really, there's confusion about Wikidata links of Wikipedia Asian Month project pages, someone reported it on d:Wikidata:Interwiki_conflicts/Unresolved/2017#Q21178975/Q27559131/Q21095748 and I've pinged you and even wrote d:User_talk:AddisWang#Wikidata:Interwiki conflicts/Unresolved/2017 (then Ctrl + F type one of "Q21178975/Q27559131/Q21095748"), but idk why you still don't reply on that issue. Those links are confused to a lot of Wikidata followers of WAM, can you tell me suggestions on it?

PS: A Dutch user summerized this issue at d:User:QZanden/Kladblok1. --Liuxinyu970226 (talk) 13:04, 30 September 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Liuxinyu970226: Hey, thanks for helping out. I guess the problem is, when we do 2016 edition, we move the /particpant to /2015 in many languages. Q21178975 looks like for 2015 edition and Q27559131 for 2016 edition. I realized I should not move pages this often for the WAM. That's why in 2017 I just use Wikipedia Asian Month 2017, so no more movings in the future.--AddisWang (talk) 18:21, 8 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

WAM 2016[edit]

Hi, I just saw there's a WAM new edition. That reminded me that any of the postcards nor the certificate arrived from the last edition. I know that, at this stage, it will be nearly impossible to get them, but I was just wondering what happened to them. Best regards, --Macesito (talk) 22:49, 5 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Request for sitenotice in mainland China[edit]

FYI, see m:CentralNotice/Request/Wiki_Science_Competition_2017_(November_1-30)#China. It's a request for banner for Wiki Science Competition. Actually, we have two jurors from China but it's difficult for us to make a campaign and we have no upload.Vietnam and India might get something.. for sure Thailand, Russia, Taiwan and Australia might get a sitenotice but not China, which will be one of the few countries in East Asia without appropiate coverage.--Alexmar983 (talk) 15:15, 11 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

  • To facilitate casual conversations between members, we now have a Facebook group! If you're on Facebook, feel free to request to join.
  • Kevin has prepared a 2019 Activities Rapid Grant to support our user group's activities through the end of the year. This includes funding for edit-a-thons, Wikipedia Connection activities at Ohio State, and other potential events. Please give it a review, and provide endorsements at the bottom and/or comments on the talk page. If you would like to plan an activity or can think of something that could be funded that isn't already included, please bring it up! The goal is to have the grant submitted for review early in the week.
  • Our membership list has been revamped and supports the addition of new details (such as name, picture, location, and titles). Members are welcome to update their entry if they wish (all details are optional).

Movement Strategy

  • Sam (PonyToast) and Maria (Rimmel.Edits) have signed up to serve as our Organized Groups Strategy Liaisons; through December, Strategy Liaisons will act as a conduit for ideas, questions, and updates between the Movement Strategy and organized groups such as our own. Thank you to both members for taking this on!
  • The Wikimedia Summit 2019 just came to a conclusion. Maria Rimmel (Rimmel.Edits) served as our representative this year, following her work at the Ohio State University and WikiConference North America. This year's event had a heavy focus on the Movement Strategy Process and its Working Groups. Maria will be providing updates and outcomes of the conference on the user group talkpage soon - keep an eye out!

Upcoming and Ongoing Events

  • This May is the election for two Affiliate-Selected Board Seats for the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees. The Ohio Wikimedians User Group will be eligible to cast one vote. Be on the lookout for updates on how we will decide our vote.
  • Two edit-a-thons are being hosted for Ohio State Department of Spanish and Portuguese students this month. One edit-a-thon is focusing on improving Wikipedia's coverage of female and under-representated language scientists, and the other on Latinx studies.

Recent Events

  • WikiConference North America 2018 (Oct 18-21) at the Ohio State University was a great success! Over 200 attendees (including those representing over 15 Wikimedia affiliates and 25 academic institutions) attended the 70+ sessions we had. A big thanks goes to all the event's organizers, volunteers (including those from Ohio Wikimedians), sponsors, and session hosts. View the full report (work in progress) for more details and outcomes. You can also check out the photos on the Commons.
Photos by Sixflashphoto, Geraldshields11, and Benjoneswhite.
"By doing an event like this, we can show people that you can edit; your contributions are valid; your contributions are valued. Beyond valued: necessary," Dalesio said.
  • Alden Library at Ohio University also independently hosted an Art+Feminism edit-a-thon on March 22. Check out the event page for more details. Outcomes included editing 27 articles, including the creation of a new one.
"We will be encouraging participants to use our collections to create and strengthen articles, and Library volunteers will be available help them do this effectively. In doing so, we hope to encourage participants to move beyond the role of information consumer, and to consider how they can enrich the information landscape—and maybe leave the internet a better place than they found it," Jennings stated.

Wikipedia Asian Month 2018[edit]

Hello good afternoon. I come here to ask you about a reward from the Wikipedia Asian Month 2018, because on the WAM2018's page it says "When you create 4 articles that fulfill the above rules, you will receive a WAM postcard from one of the Asian communities."; I created 10 and the 10 were approved, but I did not receive any postcards or anything of the sort. I await your response and thank you for your attention. MSN12102001 (talk) 11:02, 12 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I was the first in 2016 and 2018. But the certificates were not sent to me. If that continues, I think I will refuse to participate in the 2019 competition.Qolcomaq (talk) 22:44, 28 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@MSN12102001:Did you fill out the address form or you do not receive the link?--AddisWang (talk) 11:26, 14 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@AddisWang: I didn't receive the link. MSN12102001 (talk) 12:36, 14 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Qolcomaq:Hey sorry to hear that. Did you mean you do not receive the physical certificate, or you did not even receive the digital one (scanned copy). I do remember I wrote a certificate with your username in 2016 but by that time we have very small budget (compare with most Wikimedia activities you may know) and can not afford to mail the certificate to everyone, but a scanned copy should reach to you. Please do let me know what the situation.--AddisWang (talk) 11:32, 14 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately, a scanned copy has not yet reached me. However, only one certificate was issued in 2017 by Erick Guan:[3]. My mailing address:ofno@mail.ruQolcomaq (talk) 13:55, 14 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Ohio Wikimedians User Group: September 2019 newsletter[edit]

General Updates

  • WikiProject Cleveland Museum of ArtKevin (SuperHamster) and Maria (Rimmel.Edits) have been collaborating with Neal Stimler and the Cleveland Museum of Art (CMA) to launch WikiProject Cleveland Museum of Art on the English Wikipedia! Back in January, the CMA announced its conversion into an Open Access institution—and part of this initiative included the upload of thousands of photos and Wikidata items on CMA artworks. This WikiProject has been created to improve Wikipedia's coverage of topics related to the CMA, such as artworks and artists featured in the Museum's collections, while being able to leverage the great resources that have been released into the public domain. If you'd like to join in, please sign up to be a member here. We have an expanding list of articles to create here.
  • Mailing list live! — We now have admin access to the previously-deprecated Wikimedia-US-OH mailing list. All members are encouraged to subscribe here. Anyone who would like to communicate to subscribed members can email wikimedia-us-oh@lists.wikimedia.org.
  • Membership List — Reminder that our membership list has been revamped and supports the addition of new details (such as name, picture, location, and titles). Members are welcome to update their entry if they wish (all details are optional).

Movement Strategy

  • The Movement Strategy Working Groups have created their recommendations, located here. Community input will be accepted until September 15, so if you would like to provide feedback, be sure to do so in the next couple weeks.

Upcoming and Ongoing Events

  • Wiki Loves Monuments is back in the United States for 2019. Through the end of September, upload your photos of registered historical sites to the Commons to help document our history and illustrate Wikipedia - and have a shot at winning the national contest. If you're interested in participating, a guide to finding historic sites in Ohio is available here.
  • WikiConference North America 2019 is headed to Boston from November 8th through 11th! If you are interested in attending, both session proposals and scholarship applications are open through September 20th.

Recent Events

  • In April, two edit-a-thons were hosted at the Ohio State University:
    • The Female and Under-represented Language Scientists edit-a-thon, hosted by the Hispanic Linguistic Colloquium in collaboration with the Buckeye Language Network (BLN) Student Association. The goal of the event was to improve articles on under-represented language scientists. 11 editors contributed 50+ edits that consisted of 1.54k words across 24 articles, including one new article.
    • The Spanish & Portuguese Edit-A-Thon, hosted by students from the Spanish and Portuguese department (Dona pipoca and Caesarologia, with support from SuperHamster). The edit-a-thon focused on expanding coverage of Spanish and Portuguese topics on the English Wikipedia, primarily by translating articles from Spanish/Portuguese to English. In doing so, attendees sharpened their Spanish/Portuguese skills, gained experience editing Wikipedia, and learned about new topics. 23 editors contributed 180+ edits that consisted of 15.8k words across 70 articles, including four new articles.
  • Wikimania 2019 took place in Stockholm this year, with several Ohio Wikimedians attending. If you're interested in some of the sessions, many of them were recorded and are available on the Commons here.

If you'd like to participate, check out the task list and sign up on the event page.

Recent Events

  • In December, the Cincinnati Art Museum hosted an Art+Feminism edit-a-thon. The museum was an excellent place to have an edit-a-thon, with a café and staff who were helpful in setting up and ensuring there were enough tables, outlets, and plenty of resource materials available. There was a related exhibit, Women Breaking Boundaries, that was of interest to attendees. In total, 9 people attended.

Ohio Wikimedians User Group: May 2020 newsletter[edit]

General Updates

I hope this message finds you well and in good health during these trying times. Below is a list of some online activities that you may be interested in participating in.

  • The Wiki Global Check In has started! This initiative is gathering check-ins from Wikimedians all around the world, and asks for a photo that captures something related to life in your context or part of the world during the pandemic.
  • WALRUS (Wikimedians Active in Local Regions of the United States) is now hosting virtual meetings twice a month on Monday evenings. This is a place to discuss anything Wikimedia, as well as a place for Wikimedians to come together and mutually support each other. The next virtual meeting should be on Memorial Day, May 25th. You can sign up for the Wikimediaus-l mailing list to stay up to date on all WALRUS happenings and to receive meeting invites.
  • Wikipedians have been busy documenting the pandemic. In Ohio, we have articles on the pandemic in Ohio and in Columbus (the latter of which was written by our newest Ohio Wikimedians member, !). If interested, you're encouraged to help update and expand these articles, or even consider creating articles documenting the pandemic in other Ohio metro areas.
View of Florence from San Miniato by Thomas Cole, an American painter who once settled in Steubenville, Ohio, and won third-place in a competition to design the Ohio Statehouse. This painting is in the Cleveland Museum of Art's collection.
  • If you miss visiting your local museums, don't forget that the Cleveland Museum of Art's entire collection is available online and in the public domain (when permissible). Our WikiProject Cleveland Museum of Art is currently tracking 44 English Wikipedia articles and 40,322 images, which are now acquiring over 2,000,000 views a month. If you're interested in contributing, there is still plenty of work to be done to expand and create new articles!

Movement Strategy

  • The finalized Movement Strategy Recommendations have been published! This is a clarified and refined version of the recommendations that were released in January.
  • The Wikimedia Summit 2020 that was to occur in April was canceled, and Wikimedia Deutschland will not be hosting a virtual replacement. In its stead, Ryan Merkley, members of the movement strategy core team, and external consultants are exploring options to move the contents of the conference into a series of virtual events.
