We accept contribution in all language editions of Wikipedia! As always, the campaign is dedicated to famous Ukrainian artists of cinema, music, literature, architecture, design, and cultural phenomena of Ukraine that are now part of world heritage.

Join the campaign and win valuable prizes!

You are also welcome to translate the landing page of the contest and banner into your own language.

As part of the campaign, we’ve also prepared a special event for you!

Have you ever explored a museum not in person, but as your digital avatar? Join us for a guided virtual tour through the Museum of Stolen Art — during the tour, you’ll learn how Russian forces looted and demolished museum collections and cultural monuments in occupied cities, with a particular focus on Mariupol.

💬 You’ll also have the opportunity to translate and improve articles related to the event as part of the UCDM 2025 campaign.

You received this message because you participated in the previous iterations of Ukraine's Cultural Diplomacy Month. OlesiaLukaniuk (WMUA) (talk)

Get started with the Lua interface to simplify the preparation of modules for translation in MetaWiki

[edit]

Greetings!

The Language and Product Localization team has developed a Lua interface to simplify the preparation of Lua modules for translation in the MetaWiki platform. This means that module developers can now use the new Lua interface to load translatable strings, and the translators can translate them in the same translation interface that is used for templates and wiki pages.

This improvement makes it easier for translators to find and edit module strings without dealing with raw Lua code. It helps prevent mistakes that could break the module during translation.

We invite you to watch our demo video and read more about translatable modules to understand how it works. Please give us your feedback on this talk page on how well the Lua interface addresses the challenges in your workflow and how useful it is in module localization tasks. You can also refer to Module:User Wikimedia project, which was recently converted to utilize these messages, for example usage.

Your feedback is important as it will help us evaluate and decide how to continue developing and improving this interface, extend it to other wikis, or change our approach.

Thank you, and we anticipate your honest feedback.

Use of AI in replying to steward election questions

[edit]

I've used my two questions, and I see this has been asked, but I want to make my perspective clear.

Your answers to all questions which have been asked of you reek of AI usage, not for translations, but for the content itself. The constructions, the lack of information, the fact that when I pasted questions into ChatGPT I got roughly point-by-point the same draft replies. With basically no exception, your answers provide no additional information about yourself. EPIC tried to help you, noting that you could respond in any language you wished. The hope, I assume, was that you would respond with a human-written message in Arabic. Instead, you responded with a message that described how you sought guidance from more experienced contributors and invested time in understanding policies, best practices, and community processes and how your current track record demonstrates consistent adherence to policies, neutrality, and calm judgment, particularly when dealing with disputes or sensitive administrative matters. These say nothing. These are indistinguishable from the AI unblock requests which spam our VRT queue.

Your use of artificial intelligence tools to answer questions is an insult to the people who put time into writing them, to the steward elections process, and to the role of stewards. It would have been better to simply not answer my questions, for there is no functional distinction between that and the word salad you pasted in reply.

If somehow you are elected, know that you cannot outsource your decision making to a large language model. If you are not elected, I ask that you seriously reflect on why you are running for this role in the first place. We are here to elect humans.

If you reply to me here, please do so in Arabic; I can use machine translation tools, and at least I'd be reading something written by a human. If you are considering copy-pasting what I've written into an LLM, I would prefer you not respond, for that is functionally the same but without the insult.

Mohammed Qays (talk) 16:03, 20 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for your response. I look forward to seeing a set of answers which reflect your experience. Best, Vermont (🐿️🏳️‍🌈) 16:12, 20 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
I also don't want to leave unaddressed the accusation that my message is a personal attack. I am sorry if it comes across as one. It is confrontational, sure, but it is strictly a comment on what you posted in reply to steward election questions and how I feel reading them. It is not a comment on you personally; if anything it's the opposite, it's a request to see how you, personally would answer those questions without the muddying effect of AI tools. Your response here has emotion, it has a tone, it reflects your experiences and conveys meaning. Thank you, and I do truly look forward to your reply updates. Best, Vermont (🐿️🏳️‍🌈) 16:40, 20 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
ردك هنا We are here to elect humans
Mohammed Qays (talk) 16:49, 20 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
This is helpful feedback, thank you, and I do apologize for that phrase. It was intended to follow from the previous sentences, that we are not interested in what an LLM thinks, we are interested in what you the human thinks. I see that this was unclear.
Re: issues in translating...many of us spend an inordinate amount of time cleaning up stuff written by LLMs and have developed both a strong sense of LLM-written text and an aversion to having to read it. If this can be tacked up to a misunderstanding caused by ChatGPT translation then I am happy that it can be resolved, but I would note that it must have changed a lot. I would really recommend against using it in the future for translation. If you post your answers in Arabic, someone can translate it either themselves or using a less-heavy-handed machine translator. Best, Vermont (🐿️🏳️‍🌈) 17:14, 20 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
Coming back to this after a day, I do want to apologize more generally for the tone of my initial message. In retrospect I wish I'd written something more focused on communicating concern and less annoyance. It's important that I assume good faith on issues like these, something I failed to do, especially when there are language differences and resultingly a higher likelihood of unintentional impacts from using LLMs as translators. And thank you for the updates to your answers. Regards, Vermont (🐿️🏳️‍🌈) 04:27, 22 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Vermont لا عليك، أنا عن نفسي نسيت الأمر، وشكراً لك وللزملاء على تنبيهي بخصوص هذا الموضوع، لك التحية، ويوم سعيد. Mohammed Qays (talk) 10:57, 22 January 2026 (UTC)Reply
