أخوك إم زي--1339861mzb (talk) 21:37, 1 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

2017 Board Elections candidate interviews[edit]

Dear candidate,

Thank you for running for the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees in this year's community elections. I am contacting you on behalf of the community podcasts Wikipedia Weekly and Source Code Berlin. We are sure you recognize the importance of transparency and a fully-informed community when it comes to these elections. To that end, we would like to conduct short audio interviews (under 30 minutes) with each of the candidates for publication in podcast form prior to the conclusion of the election. If you agree, we will contact you via email to coordinate the time and date of these interviews. Please let me know if you have any questions. Gamaliel (talk) 16:41, 2 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Sure @Gamaliel:, I had be glad to. I suppose you will just send me an email with the details? --Abbad (talk) 17:16, 3 May 2017 (UTC).[reply]
Thank you for agreeing to our proposed candidate interviews, but we have decided that we will not be conducting them this year. We feel that Sunday's video interview has accomplished the goal of providing the community with exposure to the candidates and we are currently exploring ways that our potential election coverage can supplement and not duplicate that exposure. Uncontrolled spending increases[edit]

(I am asking this question of all board candidates.)

In my essay at User:Guy Macon/Wikipedia has Cancer I make several proposals.

Whether of not you agree with the essay as a whole, would you be willing to propose and/or support any of the following?

  • Make spending largely transparent, publish a detailed account of what money is being spent on and answer any reasonable questions asking for more details. There is no need for you to remind us that some things cannot be published because of legal or privacy issues. I am asking whether we should be as open and transparent as possible, not asking the board to do something stupid or illegal.
  • Limit spending increases to no more than inflation plus some percentage (adjusted for any increases in page views). Are you willing to support any limit at all on spending growth, and if so roughly how much? 10%? 20%? 30%?
  • Build up our endowment and structure the endowment so that the WMF cannot legally dip into the principal when times get bad. There is no need to answer with something to the effect that either you or the WMF have good intentions. I am specifically asking whether you support making the endowment principle legally untouchable, allowing the WMF to only spend the endowment interest.

If we do these things now, in a few short years we could be in a position to do everything we are doing now, while living off of the endowment interest, and would have no need for further fundraising. Or we could keep fundraising, using the donations to do many new and useful things, knowing that whatever we do there is a guaranteed income stream from the endowment that will be large enough to keep the servers running indefinitely. --Guy Macon (talk) 14:40, 13 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Guy, I'm not running for the Board, nor have a seen the budget. (Where is it?) Just commenting that you bring up an important topic.
I'm an accountant by training, and have been Administrator of a Washington think-tank supported by a lot of eleemosynary institutions, so I know the worry. I don't think that total conservatism is called for. Technologies change, and in a future artifically intelligent Web there might not be any need to keep Wikipedia alive forever. In any event, the present Wikipedia would probably stay in existence in some corner of such a hypothetical creature.
If funding is covering present expenses plus a tranche to endowment, that's ideal. If the technology evolves greatly it will be nice to have some endowment to cover the transition.
The whole thing is tremendously valuable. Just one taste for you: my step-sons are now in medical school in England and Scotland -- and are able to make it there after the upheavals of war and revolution because they had access to the Internet while living in refugee camps in Kenya and Uganda.
Clearly the translation of Wikipedia into the major African and Asian languages needs to be a priority. Refugee camps don't look like going out of business any time soon. David Lloyd-Jones (talk) 14:24, 14 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]
David Lloyd-Jones, it would be a huge help if you could read User:Guy Macon/Wikipedia has Cancer and comment on the associated talk page. Also, feel free to edit my essay. I did my best, but an electronics engineer talking about accounting is certain to make a number of basic errors -- about the results one would expect if an accountant wrote an essay about choosing capacitors for a Cockcroft–Walton generator. :) --Guy Macon (talk) 14:49, 14 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

RFC discussions about Arabic Wikipedia[edit]

Hello. There are ongoing RFC discussions about Arabic Wikipedia:

I invite you to those discussions.

BTW, sorry that you didn't win the Trustees election this year. On the bright side, there are other opportunities to explore. --George Ho (talk) 20:52, 29 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Bridges across Cultures[edit]

Hi Abbad, I've reverted your edit here. The style has been used in all pages, it doesn't make sense to just change one of them. Also, somebody have to mark all the pages for translation for the changes to take place. :\ BTW, I asked Haytham abulela for help with Arabic translation but he seems to be offline. Can you please translate the template? Many thanks. -- Meisam (talk) 11:48, 14 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Done by Haytham abulela! Thanks anyways.
Also, check Bridges across Cultures/Countries after adding new countries to the list and fix inconsistencies with the main tables. -- Meisam (talk) 13:16, 14 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Meisam. Thank you for your message. I get why you reverted my edit, but I still think it makes more sense to do the same for all other lists since they now lack categories. As for the countries table, I get that is is really messy now. It is gonna need a bit of cleanup since new columns should be added to almost all of them --Abbad (talk) 13:21, 14 October 2017 (UTC).[reply]
The Bridges across Cultures is to "create or expand articles regarding Latin American culture in Arabic, Persian or Turkish Wikipedia or Middle Eastern and Northern African culture in Spanish or Portuguese Wikipedia." Only the articles in Arabic Wikipedia which are written in Spanish and Portuguese are eligable for the contest. Please don't add the Turkish/Persian to the list for Arabic articles. It will mess up the table and confuse the participants. -- Meisam (talk) 13:24, 14 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Seems like you are offline now. I've added "noinclude" tag to the parts you've added to the list. They'll still show up in the Bridges across Cultures/Lists. Please remove the tags after you've fixed everything. Thanks for your understanding. More power to you! -- Meisam (talk) 15:21, 14 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I am back. I was copying lists that were already added by users on Arabic Wikipedia; it seems that, at the time, we have not clearly agreed on whether Arab Wikipedians will write about other countries in the MENA region. I am working on fixing the tables --Abbad (talk) 15:28, 14 October 2017 (UTC).[reply]

Hi @محک:, I have indeed seen your email and just to let you know, I am in the process of discussing possible options with the other organizers, as your case is a little unique here. Hopefully I'll have an answer for you by the weekend --Abbad (talk) 22:06, 13 February 2018 (UTC).[reply]

Help request for synonym labeling[edit]

@عباد ديرانية: As yo know, we are building a model to be able to do article section alignment across Wikipedia languages. I'm wondering if you can help us with a labeling task that will define the ground truth for a synonym detection algorithm. (Please be aware that clicking on the next two links will take you to a Google spreadsheet) The task and the instructions, in case you'd like to look into it. Also, if you have recommendations for who else can help us for Arabic, please suggest names in the Usernames sheet. I'd appreciate if you let me know if this is something you can help us with. Thanks either way! :) --LZia (WMF) (talk) 19:38, 2 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

JSTOR account redistribution (The Wikipedia Library)[edit]

Hi - according to our records you received a free account for JSTOR through The Wikipedia Library. Because we’ve used up all of our allocated accounts, and it’s been some time since they were distributed, we want to redistribute any accounts that aren’t being used to users on our waitlist.

If you’re still using, or plan to use, your JSTOR access, no problem! Simply head over to the Library Card platform, log in, and request a renewal of your account. You should be able to do this from your user page, or the JSTOR signup page. If you can’t find the renewal button, or have any other issues or questions about this, please feel free to leave a message on my talk page. We’ll begin redistributing inactive accounts in September; if you request renewal after then we will only be able to reactivate your account if we have spots remaining. Thanks, MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:32, 20 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
