Inquiry about the discussion for disabling machine translation in Content Translation Tool in Arabic Wikipedia
[edit]Hello. My name is McYata, mainly active on the Japanese Wikipedia, and I would like to ask you about the discussion on restricting machine translation of content translations.
I know that in May-June 2020, an agreement was reached to restrict machine translation in Arabic Wikipedia and that you and other users submitted a request to the development team. However until now, machine translation still does not appear to be restricted in the content translation of Arabic Wikipedia.
We Japanese users are now trying to do away with machine translation in the Japanese version as well, and are wondering how to negotiate with Meta-Wiki. In this regard, we would like to refer to the situation in the Arabic Wikipedia. However, we do not read Arabic and do not know what developments have taken place in the last two years.
If you have any detailed circumstances or discussion pages that we could refer to, could you please let us know?--McYata (talk) 11:44, 15 May 2022 (UTC)
- @McYata: Hi, as far as I know the developers or phabricator team haven't responded to our request yet, and I don't know why. I suggest you contact @علاء:, he may have some useful information.--Faisal talk 15:06, 15 May 2022 (UTC)
- @فيصل: Thanks for your quick reply! It seems 2 years delay is too long to progress any reform for each language... Actually I also tried contacting him, but I don't have enough contribution in meta, so could not comment his semi-protected talk pages in meta nor in Arabic Wikipedia. Is there any other way to contact him? McYata (talk) 16:14, 15 May 2022 (UTC)
- @McYata I mentioned him in my previous comment, and I think he will respond here. Let's give him some time.-- Faisal talk 16:34, 15 May 2022 (UTC)

WP:BEFORE
[edit]On August 8, 2025 (today), you nominated Kuwaiti Joint Relief Committee for deletion. Your very brief deletion rationale was "no notability."
In 2004 the US Supreme Court ruled that the DoD could not indefinitely detain individuals who were not classed as "lawful combatants", as defined by the Geneva Conventions, without first offering them an explanation as to why they were being held, and second, offering them a chance to rebut those allegations. In response the DoD created the Office for the Administrative Review of Detained Enemy Combatants. As per the SCOTUS ruling the Combatant Status Review Tribunals it created were similar, on the surface, at least, the Tribunals that the US military had used to refute or confirm whether individuals initially held as POWs actually measured up to the Geneva Conventions' criteria for "lawful combatants".
A team of legal scholars, at Seton Hall University, published almost two dozen papers on those CSRT panels. One of their papers, based on the 558 allegation memos, analyzed the organizations named in those memos. It found the captives had their indefinite detention justified, at least in part, for an alleged connection with organizations that were not, at that time, suspected of ties to terrorism.
The Kuwaiti Joint Relief Committee was one of those organizations that an OARDEC memo writer used to justify the indefinite detention, even though the committee was not then suspected of a tie to terrorism.
I believe en:WP:BEFORE lays out the obligations someone nominating an article for deletion should fulfill, before they nominated an article for deletion. Traditionally, once an individual comes across what they consider a weak article has conducted their own independent web search, and has reached an informed conclusion as to whether the topic of that weak article was actually notable, after all, they are supposed to choose one of the alternatives to deletion.
Have you considered that very brief nominations, like this one, could make other people wonder whether you are bothering to fulfill your WP:BEFORE obligations? I followed up on the handy web search links the AFD template added to the top of your nomination. I found lots of links. They show that US officials did, eventually add this charity to their sanctions list. Consider the Kuwait chapter, from the Handbook of Terrorism in the Middle East, which says
Geo Swan (talk) 16:46, 8 August 2025 (UTC)- It should be noted that a majority of the Kuwaiti nationals detained in Guantanamo maintained their innocence and argued that they were on charity missions in Afghanistan and at the wrong place at the wrong time. Many argued that they were conducting aid work on behalf of now banned Islamist NGOs such as al-Wafa and the Kuwaiti Joint Relief Committee, both of which were later designated by the US government and the UN as AQ-linked entities and conduits for terror financing.
- @Geo Swan Yes, I did search and found no notability, which is why I wrote “no notability,” and I have no further additions. Policies do not prohibit that. Thank you for your message, but sorry, my conduct does not violate any policies or guidelines. Meta has nothing to do with this message; anyone who wishes to discuss this with me can do so on the English Wikipedia, as my contributions are there and not on Meta. Thanks.-- Faisal talk 22:08, 8 August 2025 (UTC)

Reminder: global rename policy requirement
[edit]You are receiving this message because you are either a Steward or a global renamer. If you are steward and don't perform global rename, you can safely ignore this message.
For the first 24 hours after a rename or vanishing request has been placed, it should only be processed by a renamer who has sufficient proficiency in the language of the requester's home or most active wiki, and is active on that wiki.
Refer to the 2025 RFC adding this rule, and following global-renamers mailing list emails: 1, 2, 3. Thank you.
