Question on Evaluation portal that it'd be great to have your feedback on.

[edit]

Hi Amir! There is a question on the Evaluation portal that you might be able to contribute to about hack-a-thon evaluation. We hope you can participate, and spread the word to anyone you might know who would be interested. Get involved, here. :D SarahStierch (talk) 19:26, 8 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Thanks! It's in Tel-Aviv, and I'll probably be one of the event's organizers, so I'm in a bit of a COI about this particular one :) --Amir E. Aharoni (talk) 05:24, 11 October 2013 (UTC)Reply

Content translation campaigns

[edit]

Hello, I'm considering setting up some content translation campaigns where new users are suggested to perform some translations. Is there a way to

  1. force the loading of Special:ContentTranslation with an URL parameter, even if the user has not enabled it in the preferences,
  2. preload some suggestions in Special:ContentTranslation, again with an URL parameter?

Thanks, Nemo 15:45, 2 October 2015 (UTC)Reply

Did you consider the discussion in your updates to phabricator:project/board/1116/? You may want to update the page as well. Nemo 09:51, 2 April 2016 (UTC)Reply

Correct italics/cursive for Macedonian

[edit]

Hello Amir. I finally discovered that our cursive/italics can be rendered correctly and we would like them installed for the whole mk.wiki. I won't delve into it here as it is all explained in the conversation with Lydia P., where she responded with some technical details. I also spoke to GerardM, who suggested that you may be the person to help with implementing this for our wiki. I will be really glad if we can finally have our proper letters on the wiki. Again, see the talk with Lydia for particulars. Cheers! --B. Jankuloski (talk) 06:24, 4 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

Wikimedia Language engineering

[edit]

Hi there! I am a user on the Afrikaans Wikipedia. Who is the senior person of the Wikimedia Language engineering commitee? Regards. Oesjaar (talk) 17:15, 20 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Oesjaar!
So sorry, I only noticed it now!
Are you asking about the Wikimedia Foundation Language Engineering team or the Wikimedia Language committee? It's unclear from your question. I happen to be a member of both (although my Language committee membership is in volunteer capacity, as User:Amire80). Amir E. Aharoni (WMF) (talk) 07:32, 5 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
User talk:Aaharoni-WMF#top, sorry I can't even remember why I was looking for anybody from the Wikimedia Foundation Language Engineering, so long ago. Thanks for the reply. Oesjaar (talk) 09:58, 5 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Oesjaar, Again, I'm sorry about that :(
Perhaps it was something about the Content Translation extension? Or the Universal Language Selector? Amir E. Aharoni (WMF) (talk) 12:01, 5 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
User talk:Aaharoni-WMF#top, now I remember, there was an update and when we use Geselshoekie (our version of Village Pump) the captions/comments was all of a sudden English. It use to be in Afrikaans. We want back in Afrikaans. Regards.Oesjaar (talk) 12:53, 5 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Oesjaar, I may be able to help with that. Which part exactly is in English? I am looking at w:af:Wikipedia:Geselshoekie, and I see everything in Afrikaans, but perhaps I am missing something.
Also, which skin do you use—Vector 2010, Vector 2022, Monobook, Timeless? It appears in Voorkeure -> Voorkoms -> Omslag (Preferences -> Appearance -> Skin). Amir E. Aharoni (WMF) (talk) 12:58, 13 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
Amir E. Aharoni (WMF) When one creats new comment everything is in English. You question about skin - have no idea; in fact does not understand the question. Oesjaar (talk) 19:47, 13 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Oesjaar, I think I know what the issue is. The talk pages were upgraded recently to make posting and replying more convenient, and it added several new strings that have to be translated. They are in the "Discussion Tools" extension. They can be translated on translatewiki.net. You can use this direct link to translate Discussion Tools into Afrikaans. You can read more about Discussion Tools at mw:Talk pages project.
Note that translatewiki.net uses its own accounts, so you'll have to log in separately. You seem to have an account with the same name there.
I've put a list of important things that should be translated into Afrikaans on your user page: translatewiki:User:Oesjaar. The most relevant for this issue is "Discussion Tools", but I recommend bringing all of them to 100% translation, from top to bottom. It takes some time, but it will eventually give Afrikaans Wikipedia readers and editors a fully-localized experience.
Another user who has been active on translatewiki is @Rooiratel, and perhaps they can help, too.
(About "skin": The "skin" is the design of the site. There are several designs you can choose from. "Vector" is the default, and it's probably going to change to "Vector 2022" soon. "Monobook" was the default before 2010, and "Minerva" is the default on mobile phones. You can see which one you are using by going to Voorkeure -> Voorkoms -> Omslag. In any case, it doesn't matter very much for this discussion.) Amir E. Aharoni (WMF) (talk) 12:00, 14 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
Amir E. Aharoni (WMF) I appreciate your feedback. You are the first person in a very long time that actually responded to a request from the Afrikaans Wikipedia. Regards. Oesjaar (talk) 13:46, 14 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
Very happy to help, @Oesjaar :)
Questions about localization are my favorite! Amir E. Aharoni (WMF) (talk) 19:43, 14 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
I see that @Rooiratel started translating. This is the right thing to do.
You won't see the changes immediately. Usually, everything that is translated before Monday morning gets deployed to Wikipedia on Thursday evening. So if there are not technical surprises, all the translations that were made today will start appearing on Thursday 22 late in the evening. Amir E. Aharoni (WMF) (talk) 19:49, 14 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
Amir E. Aharoni (WMF)I chatted to @Rooiratel last night. We do not stay to far apart, we will meet soon to discuss details. Thank you once again. Oesjaar (talk) 06:56, 15 September 2022 (UTC)Reply
Excellent. I have put the same list of important projects on your user pages using the template "User:Amire80/MW high prio links". If you want to collaborate, the most efficient thing to do is that each of you will choose another project from the list and you work in parallel. You should also invite more friends who know Afrikaans and know about Wikipedia editing.
