Add topicWatchlist Expiry project page
[edit]Hello,
During the Community Whishlist survey 2019, you have voted for the Watchlist item Expiration wish.
Community Tech has created the Watchlist Expiry project page to work on this feature, and is looking for your feedback about the open questions they have.
Regards, IFried_(WMF), 15:51, 25 September 2019 (UTC)
- Hello, Barkeep49! The Community Tech team has posted an April update to the Watchlist Expiry project, and we would love your feedback. The update includes new mockups, which show how users can determine watch status when viewing/editing watched pages or the watchlist. We invite you to check out the update and share your feedback on the project talk page. Thank you! --IFried (WMF) (talk) 19:29, 23 April 2020 (UTC)

The 2021 Community Wishlist Survey is now open! This survey is the process where communities decide what the Community Tech team should work on over the next year. We encourage everyone to submit proposals until the deadline on 30 November, or comment on other proposals to help make them better. The communities will vote on the proposals between 8 December and 21 December.
The Community Tech team is focused on tools for experienced Wikimedia editors. You can write proposals in any language, and we will translate them for you. Thank you, and we look forward to seeing your proposals!

We invite all registered users to vote on the 2021 Community Wishlist Survey. You can vote from now until 21 December for as many different wishes as you want.
In the Survey, wishes for new and improved tools for experienced editors are collected. After the voting, we will do our best to grant your wishes. We will start with the most popular ones.
We, the Community Tech, are one of the Wikimedia Foundation teams. We create and improve editing and wiki moderation tools. What we work on is decided based on results of the Community Wishlist Survey. Once a year, you can submit wishes. After two weeks, you can vote on the ones that you're most interested in. Next, we choose wishes from the survey to work on. Some of the wishes may be granted by volunteer developers or other teams.
We are waiting for your votes. Thank you!

DiscussionTools
[edit]Hi, Barkeep49,
The Editing team has scheduled a major update to mw:Extension:DiscussionTools (the new Reply tool) for next week's deployment train. Since you invoke the feature from a script (I do, too), you're probably going to see that update next week, before it's officially released in the mw:Beta Feature system. The new update will use a similar system for starting a ==New discussion==. As before, full-page wikitext editing will not be affected. There is more information on the project page at mw:Talk pages project/New discussion.
You don't need to do anything about this, but if you encounter problems next week, please ping me or leave a note on the talk page for the project. Thanks, Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 22:00, 12 January 2021 (UTC)
- @Whatamidoing (WMF): thanks for the notice. I'm excited to get this new functionality. Best, Barkeep49 (talk) 22:02, 12 January 2021 (UTC)
- It should (if all goes well) appear on Thursday at enwiki, and here at Meta-Wiki on Wednesday. It won't be enabled for non-script-based users until the following week (again, if all goes well), so please be quick to report bugs. There will only be about 50 editors testing during those first few days, and if we find anything seriously wrong, the team will want to delay the release in Beta Features. Proposal
[edit]For some reason it won't let me respond to the proposal, but: That's exactly what I'm talking about, thanks [ping removed].
The idea that people on phone have their own section because of the limits of the app are annoying to admins and to people who revert and warn, as they don't know for sure if the vandal hears them. AstatineEnjoyer (talk) 16:16, 24 January 2023 (UTC)

U4C extension period
[edit]Regarding [1] - it seems that this was added as a note for Universal Code of Conduct/Coordinating Committee/Cases/2024/Missbrauch von Adminfunktionen im deutschsprachigen Wiktionary (which was indeed filed on November 4 and had its acceptance period extended). When it was closed the note was not removed, thus why I removed it. Since the case has been closed and a decision has been made, shouldn't it indeed be outdated (and removed) by now? EPIC (talk) 21:42, 22 January 2025 (UTC)
- Apologies. Yes. You're correct. I misread what you removed. Barkeep49 (talk) 21:52, 22 January 2025 (UTC)
Hey! I am just noting that the case was brought up by a Polish user concerning Polish Wikipedia. I am sure that it was just a small omission (after all: pt is close to pl). I took liberty of translating the message to Polish, but didn't want to post it for U4C. Here it is:
"Nie doszło do systemowego problemu, a plwiki ma działający Komitet Arbitrażowy, nie mamy więc jurysdykcji w tym projekcie. Z przykrością przyjmujemy informację, że wnioskodawca stracił wiarę w działanie KA, ale nie mamy podstaw do podjęcia działań w tej konkretnej sprawie."

BZPN (talk) 11:07, 24 March 2025 (UTC)
- @BZPN for me there are only 2 cases where the U4C can accept an appeal from a project with an ArbCom. First if the ArbCom's scope does not include the topic being appealed. This change is set to be formalized in the current review of the Enforcement Guidelines and Charter. Second if there is systemic failure. I don't think either of these apply in this case. Other members of the U4C might have different opinions. Best, Barkeep49 (talk) 14:48, 24 March 2025 (UTC)

Request for Fair Review and Lifting of Ban
[edit]Dear Barkeep49,
I hope you’re doing well. I am writing to you personally with deep respect to kindly ask for a fair review of the ban placed on my account.
I am an Arabic-speaking contributor who joined the English Wikipedia with honest intentions: to contribute constructively by translating verified and meaningful content from Arabic Wikipedia into English. My goal has always been to support cross-cultural knowledge sharing and not to engage in any form of disruptive editing.
Unfortunately, I was accused of having a conflict of interest, even though all I did was translate existing, valid articles from Arabic Wikipedia. When I was told these articles did not exist, I provided direct links and sources to show they were indeed present. You kindly acknowledged the mistake and apologized, which I appreciate sincerely.
Later, I was banned based on the use of translation tools in my communication. As someone who is not a native English speaker, I rely on translation tools to communicate and participate accurately. This is not to deceive or bypass any rules, but simply to overcome language barriers.
I also submitted a complaint regarding the repeated unfair treatment, but it was rejected—again by the same admin involved in the original issue. This makes me feel like I haven’t been given a fair and neutral opportunity to defend myself.
All my contributions are constructive and in line with Wikipedia’s standards. I have not vandalized or added misleading content. My edit history and user talk page clearly show this. I believe I have been treated unfairly and all I ask for is the chance to return and continue contributing in a positive, respectful manner.
Please reconsider my situation—or kindly refer my case to another uninvolved and neutral administrator for a fresh review.
Thank you for your time and consideration. علي بدر العتيبي (talk) 09:05, 15 May 2025 (UTC)
- @علي بدر العتيبي thanks for reaching out. I do not generally do appeals work on English Wikipedia and any appeal would need to be done on your user talk on English Wikipedia. I understand your frustration about your use of translation tools, but English Wikipedia expects people to be able to communicate and contribute based on their own English proficiency. That is different than a place like Meta where English serves more as a "common" language and translation tools can help them communicate with others who might not also be fluent in English. Best, Barkeep49 (talk) 14:28, 15 May 2025 (UTC)
Why?
[edit]Hi Barkeep49, excuse me, but I don't understand why you reverted my edits. The complaint is against me. Can't I defend myself? What did I do wrong? Jalu (talk) 17:19, 31 May 2025 (UTC)
- @Jaluj we're asking for discord images to be emailed rather than posted. If you'd like to add back your text (referencing the images) that would be fine. Please let me know if you have any more questions that I can help with. Barkeep49 (talk) 19:42, 31 May 2025 (UTC)

Question
[edit]Hi. Any chance there's a timeline for when you expect something to be done with my case either way? I'm kind of burnt out on the project at this point given the whole thing with A.Savin and am going to be pretty busy in real life in a few weeks anyway. So I'd like to at least know where it's at if nothing else. I don't expect you guys to abort the case just because of how long it's been open or anything but the amount of time it's taken to deal with is a little ridiculous and hasn't really helped things. It's just needlessly stress that makes me more likely to act out. I don't see why the final warning can't be followed and then you guys can get involved in the future if there's actually a need for it. I'd really like to move on from this whole thing at some point if I can though. Thanks. --Adamant1 (talk) 17:16, 30 July 2025 (UTC)
- What a reasonable question. I'm sorry we haven't moved forward. I think we have some broad agreement as to a next step it's just someone to do the work of implementing. Let me see what I can find out for you. Barkeep49 (talk) 01:05, 31 July 2025 (UTC)
- @Barkeep49: Any chance of an update? This whole thing is stressing me out quit a lot the further it goes on and just leading to more issues on Commons. I get that you guys want me to cut the bad behavior but that's a lot harder to do with the U4C case open and me not knowing if or when I'm going to be indefed over it. --Adamant1 (talk) 05:54, 20 September 2025 (UTC)

[edit]Hello Barkeep49, Yesterday I mailed the U4C committee my appeal about my block from hewiki, in accordance to the committee's decision. - I can confirm we did get it. I haven't had time to do the initial screen so I left it unacknowledged at this time. Barkeep49 (talk) 17:39, 19 September 2025 (UTC)
- Thank you, Barkeep49. I know it's a long document, please take your time. Are you the only one who's handling the appeals? איתמראשפר (talk) 07:55, 20 September 2025 (UTC)
Local logs
[edit]Is there a reason why the removal of user rights as an enforcement here on Meta isn't reflected in the local logs? Surely that's an oversight and not intentional. It seems appropriate that there should be more of a local record than a mismatch between the user's rights log and their current rights. GMGtalk 13:08, 6 October 2025 (UTC)
- That is not great. For me the net balance still weighs in favor of Stewards carrying out U4C decisions, rather than asking local crats. I think in situations like the one on Commons where the U4C has made a decision that has mixed reactions, asking a local crat to take a position they know will earn enmity among their fellow community members is unfair and from a U4C perspective crats/admins actively refusing to implement a rights change (rather than silently doing nothing) would escalate problems even if the U4C just turns to the Stewards then. I would rather the U4C not spread and crate conflict any more than necessary. Best, Barkeep49 (talk) 15:24, 6 October 2025 (UTC)
- I was thinking more of whether this could work out as a phab thing. But I don't really phab. So I'm not an expert. GMGtalk 15:28, 6 October 2025 (UTC)
- Oh gotcha. Hmm that's an intriguing idea - the U4C has been asked the last two years around "wishlist" items relating to tech and the like and we could perhaps add this to next year's list. Thanks for the idea, let me see what other think. Best, Barkeep49 (talk) 15:34, 6 October 2025 (UTC)
- Without some kind of fix, we're setting ourselves up for some confusing situations, especially as these actions become older. In the instance I was looking into, I was only able to clumsily find out what happened because I already knew there was ongoing drama on Meta. A permalink in the local log also serves a transparency function, remembering that probably most users are not at all aware that Meta or U4C even exist. GMGtalk 15:41, 6 October 2025 (UTC)
- @GreenMeansGo: I agree because CU/OS changes are all on Meta and not reflected on local wikis, but see phab:T6055, which has been open since 2005 ... Sdrqaz (talk) 16:43, 10 October 2025 (UTC)
- To my earlier point that is exactly the kind of phab ticket the U4C might be able to draw WMF resources to when we're next asked about it. Best, Barkeep49 (talk) 16:59, 10 October 2025 (UTC)

bias
[edit]I am thinking of filing a complaint with the Wikimedia Foundation Universal Code of Conduct for bias and ultranationalism. What do you recommend? جودت (talk) 18:04, 9 October 2025 (UTC)
- @جودت Ultanationalism will be easier to make a case for than bias. I would recommend having strong evidence, explained as simply as possible, of that ultranationalism. You can then follow the instructions at Universal Code of Conduct/Coordinating Committee/Cases to file your case. If you have other questions please don't hesitate to ask. Barkeep49 (talk) 17:02, 10 October 2025 (UTC)
- @Barkeep49 I opened a discussion in the Hebrew Wikipedia to change the name of an article from “Allegations of Genocide in Gaza” to “Gaza Genocide,” and I began to notice bias. Someone told me that the UN, which confirmed this, is anti-Semitic, and that the two Israeli organizations that confirmed the genocide are far-left. Another said that Jews do not accept this, and that the explanation of the article changes according to the language, although the truth does not change with the change of peoples and languages. Some also say that a court ruling must be issued, although this is not required. There are many and varied sources that confirm this, even within Israel. As I mentioned, there are two Israeli organizations that confirmed this. There is also a politician, the leader of the Israeli Democratic Party, who said: “Israel is killing children in Gaza as a hobby.” There are other Israeli politicians who have made statements that consider the actions of the Israeli government to be war crimes. There is a lawsuit filed by South Africa against Israel for genocide, which was supported by several countries. There are statements by senior politicians from various countries describing Israel’s actions as genocide. There is explicit bias and ultranationalism in the Hebrew Wikipedia, although I tried to discuss it with them. It seems that there are users who have political ideas that support the directions of the Israeli government led by Netanyahu. There are Who turned this discussion into a place for spreading hate speech when someone said, "I don't pity the people of Gaza!" I opened a discussion on the Hebrew Wikipedia to change the name of an article because it was biased, and I didn't come to hear such nonsense! Wikimedia projects are committed to the principles of neutrality and cooperation. جودت (talk) 17:43, 10 October 2025 (UTC)
