Admin?

[edit]

Hello, have you ever considered applying for adminship again on Meta? You held advanced permissions in the past, and you have been active recently. I'm sure Meta will benefit from you as an admin again. I could assign you patroller rights to aid your counter-vandalism work here too. Jianhui67 talkcontribs 08:09, 30 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

Hi Jianhui67 – I’m considering it, but since I’ve only just returned from my extended break, I’m not sure how the community will react to such a request. The rights would definitely be handy, and I'd surely know how to use them. Thanks for the heads‑up! -Barras talk 08:20, 30 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
I think the community should be fine with you regaining adminship. The workload is manageable, but I guess more helping hands would be appreciated. Nonetheless, I have just granted you patroller rights, thanks for all your work here! Jianhui67 talkcontribs 08:53, 30 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the patroller right. I will try to think about writing some self-promotional sentences for getting admin rights again. ;) -Barras talk 09:13, 30 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
I could nominate you if you want haha. Jianhui67 talkcontribs 10:21, 30 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
I wouldn't mind that, tbh. :) -Barras talk 10:23, 30 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
If you're ready I can write the nomination. ;) Jianhui67 talkcontribs 11:07, 30 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Go ahead, I'm around :) -Barras talk 11:13, 30 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Meta:Requests for adminship/Barras 2 - there you go haha. Jianhui67 talkcontribs 13:02, 30 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

Congratulations, dear administrator!

[edit]
Congratulations, Barras! You now have administrator rights on Meta-Wiki. Please take a moment to read the adminstrators' policy again and to add to your watchlist several related pages (in particular: Meta:Requests for help from a sysop or bureaucrat and Meta:Requests for deletion) before launching yourself into administrator duties. Please keep an eye on the index of policies and guidelines and the local discussion forum too. Please note that while most actions done with administrator tools can be reversed by other administrators, some such as history merges or imports are not, or can only be undone in full or in part after a great amount of work, therefore you shall be extra careful when performing these type of actions. If you use IRC feel free to join the #wikimedia-metaconnect channel. You may also find our administrators' handbook useful for your day to day. Please check or add your entry to the list of administrators as well. Administrators are also allowed to subscribe to the metawiki-admins private mailing list. Subscription instructions can be found in the mailing list main page. Feel free to ask me any other administrator if you ever have any doubts or questions about the tools. Sincerely, --M/ (talk) 11:06, 6 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

Can you update the translation for Indonesian Wikipedia? Cactus🌵 spiky ouch 09:09, 12 August 2025 (UTC)Reply

Thanks

[edit]

Thank you for this edit. I didn't think of editing the page like that, for some reason. I forgot, I guess... Affe2011 (talk) 14:48, 14 October 2025 (UTC)Reply

You did everything right. When deleting such a translation, it the page is auto-updated. You can't directly edit the main page. -Barras talk 14:56, 14 October 2025 (UTC)Reply
Oh, I didn't see this before now, I didn't get the notification. But thanks, now I know. I know you couldn't edit the page but just thought you clicked on the translation tab and did something. Well, thanks for telling me. Affe2011 (talk) 07:53, 22 October 2025 (UTC)Reply

request

[edit]

Hello, I would like to submit a request to have my IP global block lifted. I previously used a sockpuppet account, but I would like to start a fresh beginning. I asked the administrators on Egyptian Wikipedia if I could contribute there, and they agreed, but they asked me to first request the removal of my global block. Therefore, I am now submitting this request to have my global block lifted. Lorbcva (talk) 11:29, 14 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

Please, I would like to start a new beginning. You can ask any administrator on Egyptian Wikipedia yourself whether they agreed to give me a chance to contribute there, and they will tell you that they did agree.
I kindly ask you to give me a chance to contribute to Wikipedia. I only want to contribute and I will not commit any violations again, and I will not use a sockpuppet account again. Lorbcva (talk) 11:43, 14 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Barras, don’t fall for this guy's "fresh start" act, He is a notorious LTA who is literally harassing me right now [1], He posted awful, childish insults on my user page [2], describing me in ways I'd be ashamed to say in the street and He insulted my mother by defaming her and randomly including my name in several articles I created [3], he also created several defamatory pages using my name specifically to libel and insult me [4], [5].
This isn't his first time lying to get back in, He previously tried to get a "New Start" on Arabic Wikipedia [6], and the community there rejected him flat out because he was sending vile insults and emails to the editors (The Steward علاء Rejected his new start), He hasn't changed at all—his current behavior is just more of the same hate speech and harassment.
He is a toxic user who manipulates the system, Giving him a chance is a waste of time and a threat to the community's safety, Just check his recent logs and his other sock puppets (he has alote of them) and the libelous pages he created under my name, He deserves a permanent ban, not an unblock. Thank you! -- Aws 💬 Talk 13:31, 14 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
No worries. The account has already been locked and no one would unblock anyway. There are other ways to appeal blocks or locks. -Barras talk 16:07, 14 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
Hello @Barras,
Unfortunately, This LTA has successfully manipulated the local admins in arzwiki to harass and silence constructive editors, I have been blocked by Admin @Esperfulmo based strictly on a malicious report from this LTA [7], More disturbingly, the admin deleted my defense and appeal messages from his talk page! [8] This is a direct violation of due process and a blatant attempt to silence a legitimate user to protect a known, globally-locked abuser.
I challenge anyone to check my edit history [9], My record is clean, constructive, and shows zero vandalism, I am being targeted solely because I expose this LTA's endless sockpuppets, The LTA is using xenophobic and nationalist rhetoric—inciting against me for being Libyan—to manipulate local admins who are unfortunately enabling this behavior, Other admins, including @HitomiAkane, have refused to intervene, claiming "non-interference" even when global policies are being trampled [10].
Since local channels have failed and my right to defend myself has been suppressed, I am turning to you as a Stewards, I request an review of my record and an investigation into why a globally locked LTA is allowed to direct administrative actions against productive editors, and I am satisfied with whatever decision you deem appropriate.
Thank you very much! -- Aws 💬 Talk 04:02, 17 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
You may want to reach out to the U4C to get that managed. -Barras talk 09:52, 17 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

Urgent: Local vandalism on ary.wikipedia.org

[edit]

Hello Barras, sorry for the direct message. I am a regular contributor on ary.wikipedia.org. We are currently facing persistent content blanking on the article ary:طاجين الحلو by IP users. Our local administrators are currently inactive and cannot take action.

Could you please apply temporary semi-protection to the article to stop this disruption?

Thank you for your global support! Mohammed Filali Fassi (talk) 13:04, 17 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

Moving pages from "WIkiBanua 4.0" to WikiBanua 4.0"

[edit]

Hello

Could you please move this page to this page? There are typos, such as "WikiBanua 4.0" instead of "WIkiBanua 4.0." Additionally, there are several content changes that affect the proposal, such as budget and other things.

Regards,

How to become Translation admin

Wow that was a quick reply. Darrrrmilk (talk) 20:15, 2 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
Do you need to be a regular admin to become Translation admin? Darrrrmilk (talk) 04:35, 3 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
No. But you need to show the need for that right, and you need to be trusted by meta's community. Considering that you are blocked on 5 projects already, it is almost impossible that you will be granted any sort of right on any project. -Barras talk 13:37, 3 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Reminder: global rename policy requirement

[edit]

You are receiving this message because you are either a Steward or a global renamer. If you are steward and don't perform global rename, you can safely ignore this message.

Hello, this is a general reminder that renames or vanish requests should be reserved for someone who knows the language and local wiki affairs on their home wiki or most active wiki for the first 24 hours after the request is placed.

For the first 24 hours after a rename or vanishing request has been placed, it should only be processed by a renamer who has sufficient proficiency in the language of the requester's home or most active wiki, and is active on that wiki.

Refer to the 2025 RFC adding this rule, and following global-renamers mailing list emails: 1, 2, 3. Thank you.

Do we normally global block users just for making legal threats on a singular Wikiproject (one of which they were already blocked on)? I feel the issue is basically already solves at that point Trade (talk) 21:27, 12 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

It depends. In that case, this didn't just happen on one project, so it's also some sort of cross-wiki abuse. That's why I decided to lock the account. -Barras talk 21:30, 12 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Commons doesnt seem to think he was doing anything to justify a local block? Trade (talk) 21:33, 12 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
They've deleted the problematic stuff this evening. However, they don't need to block. Commons is often fairly slow in acting in such cases and there would be no purpose in blocking the user after they've been locked. Sometimes even their checkusers report their findings here to have accounts locked without placing a local block. So that's nothing I'm worried about. -Barras talk 21:40, 12 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Yeah they just seem to not wanna block users for legal threats even if the policy is supposed to be the same as ENWP. No clue why Trade (talk) 22:06, 12 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Discrepancy in IPInfo tool

[edit]

Hello Barras hope you doing well,

I recently withdrew a global block request for an IP after noticing a weird technical discrepancy, and I’d really appreciate your thoughts on it. Our local Special:IPInfo tool (via Spur) clearly flags this IP as an active proxy, listing both KOOKEEY and NETNUT under proxies, and tracking it as a reverse proxy. However, when I checked it on multiple external tools, it showed up as completely clean and classified as a normal mobile ISP connection ❕ As a temporary account viewer, I want to make sure I'm doing things right,, Should we always trust our local tool's verdict over external checkers in these cases? It looks like an advanced residential proxy technique designed to bypass standard detection. Thanks! Best, -- 🐦‍🔥 Aws 💬 Talk 20:59, 16 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

@أوس the IP is a callback proxy, not a regular open proxy. Callback proxys are usually normal ISP connections [11][12]. Just because some tool mentions "proxy" you shouldn't report an IP as open proxy, it's simply not worth the effort trying to block millions of callback proxys. Of course if there's abuse coming from an IP, you should report that... Johannnes89 (talk) 21:11, 16 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
Thank you Johannnes89 for the clarification, With that in mind, is it permissible to report and share this IP if it's tied to an active, blocked sockpuppeteer? Since I've agreed to the Wikimedia Foundation Access to Nonpublic Personal Data Policy of the temporary account tools, just want to be absolutely sure I'm not crossing any privacy lines or violating the policy by exposing the IP during the report.
Thanks again!
Best, -- 🐦‍🔥 Aws 💬 Talk 21:36, 16 June 2026 (UTC)Reply
You can report IPs as long as don‘t publicly connect them to specific temporary/regular accounts (that shouldn’t be necessary anyway, stewards can just check global contributions to list all of the TA related to that IP). Of course stewards will decline the report if it’s just local abuse, in that case you should contact local admins. Johannnes89 (talk) 05:25, 17 June 2026 (UTC)Reply

~2026-38393-46

[edit]

Hi Barras, would you reconsider not globally blocking ~2026-38393-46? This LTA has a habit of reusing TAs/IPs to abuse other projects after being blocked as well as abusing talk page access. They have been globally blocked before (I can't list them here, but can send them in an email if needed). Tenshi! (Talk page) 12:15, 8 July 2026 (UTC)Reply

Done. However, such blocks are usually useless. Usually, they abandon the blocked account and obtain a new TA. Most global TA blocks are unnecessary after some local ones. -Barras talk 14:05, 8 July 2026 (UTC)Reply
