IP block exemption
[edit]- Ticket:2014021210008896 CFCF (talk) 13:35, 12 February 2014 (UTC)
- Gday CFCF. Thanks to the replies to the OTRS posts. I have had a quick chat with the checkusers at enWP (where the mentioned incident occurred), and they have no concerns with me granting the IP block exemption. It is now in place. — billinghurst sDrewth 14:15, 12 February 2014 (UTC)
- Billinghurst Sorry to disturb you, but for some reason the exemption doesn't seem to be working on Wikipedia any longer, see [1]. Is there something wrong or something I should do to make it cover Wikipedia? Thanks, CFCF (talk) 06:19, 29 April 2014 (UTC)
- Done at enWP and answered there. — billinghurst sDrewth 11:19, 29 April 2014 (UTC)

Understanding user rights
[edit]I hope that you don't see me as just trying to be difficult with my recent comments. I think that you have a misunderstanding on rights and their allocation.
Primarily rights are meant to be locally issued following a consensus of the (each) community. There is a process for seeking approval of communities the allocation of rights, and a community is able to discuss what rights are available.
As some communities do not have local rights holders, there is two levels of fallback
- global sysops (those acting to do non-controversial actions, eg. spambot cleanup, undertaking a community's request)
- stewards (as per global sysops, + act as bureaucrats and checkusers, as required).
These rights are reserve powers, and not to be used in communities where we are active participants. They do not set operating actions, and they are basically subservient to local rightsholders. The rights are not for convenience to undertake actions in communities where we are each active participants. These global are not issued to make life easier for a user, they are to make clean up easier for the community/communities. — billinghurst sDrewth 08:32, 25 June 2014 (UTC)
- I understand, I was just slightly surprised by the harsh language, seeing as it is not always evident where to post requests. Additionally, maintenance work is in my book slightly difficult to define, and I would definitely call fixing infoboxes, citations and various templates maintenance work. I've solved the issues differently though, so no hard feelings. CFCF (talk) 08:09, 16 July 2014 (UTC)

[edit]MassMessage
[edit]Use ~~~~~ so that the timestamp is localized into the language of the wiki. When sending the newsletter, bot will automatically stamp the time. (It can also sign, with the name of the bot.) — Revi 17:37, 28 January 2015 (UTC)
- Also, massmessage should be opt-in, not opt-out. — Revi 17:41, 28 January 2015 (UTC)
- I'm sorry you feel that way, this message was a one time occurance aimed to get more people knowledgable about the project. It did not mean to offend anyone, and I hope it was not to much work to remove the message from you page(s). CFCF (talk) 18:49, 28 January 2015 (UTC)
MassMessage rights
[edit]Your list was constructed so poorly that I got 27 messages on 27 different projects. Other people I've talked to were spammed similarly in over-the-top ways. I'm going to revoke your rights to do this until you can convince an admin that you will not use this feature without taking far, far more care in constructing lists in the future. Courcelles 17:41, 28 January 2015 (UTC)
- I understand it was over the top to message you on all those Wikis, my reasoning was that many do not check their messages on their non-main Wiki so often. I was certainly not prepared that my lists would find someone who had made significant edits to more than 20 Wikipedias medical articles. I personally am active on over 50 projects, but only regularly read my main page. Unfortunately I don't have any method of telling which is the main active Wikipedia, so I hope you understand my dilemma Do you have any suggestion on what I should do in these cases Courcelles? The messaging rights are crucial to my continued work on other projects, and I hope you will understand and are willing to reimplement them.CFCF (talk) 18:15, 28 January 2015 (UTC)
- Don't you say you only sent it to people who are active in medicine articles, as I said you sent it to a user who made a minor edit two years ago and nothing more. Amir (talk) 19:09, 28 January 2015 (UTC)
- The list was construed by users that had made more than a significant number of edits. It is possible that the list I provided had different criteria depending on which Wikipedia the edits were made on, but the criteria was definitely more than a few, and the pages were vetted against the w:en:WP:MED list of included articles. CFCF (talk) 19:15, 28 January 2015 (UTC)
- Don't you say you only sent it to people who are active in medicine articles, as I said you sent it to a user who made a minor edit two years ago and nothing more. Amir (talk) 19:09, 28 January 2015 (UTC)
I had to block MediaWiki message delivery in fa.wp because of your destructive spamming, think before you act! Amir (talk) 17:57, 28 January 2015 (UTC)
- I'm very sorry you feel that was necessary. Do you suggest anyone received an unwanted message, or multiple messages? This mass message was meant as a one time occurrence, and I hope you understand it was not meant to constitute spam. Ladsgroup. CFCF (talk) 18:15, 28 January 2015 (UTC)
- you sent an invitation to a user with just one edit w:fa:بحث کاربر:Akaisi64 and tons of other users with no considerable edits in medicine (such as a bot) Amir (talk) 18:59, 28 January 2015 (UTC)
- Sending messages to bots was in error, as for the user with a single edit, I do not know where the criteria fell down, I didn't procure the list myself, but was informed it was only of users with a number of medical edits. It is also possible that the user made most of the edits on other Wikis, with only a single on the fa-wiki. CFCF (talk) 19:17, 28 January 2015 (UTC)
- Why did you send the invitation to all wmf accounts of a user who made significant edits in medicine in one wiki (take for example if Akaisi64 was active ja.wp why did you send the message in his/her talk page in all wikis including fa?) your list is obviously bogus, please don't try to deny it Amir (talk) 19:38, 28 January 2015 (UTC)
- I agree with Amir. just send your newsletter to active users in WikiProject Medicine and don't disturb others. ARASH PT talk 19:45, 28 January 2015 (UTC)
- The list may be faulty in certain respects yes, but it is construed after a set of rules that demanded a certain number of edits to medical articles, and unfortunately it was not able to tell me which was the main Wiki of a user. As for this message, it was not a newsletter, and only a one time occurrence. I do not mean I am not in error, I am only telling you that it was by no means an indiscriminate list. CFCF (talk) 20:07, 28 January 2015 (UTC)
- Please stop trying to pass blame. "you are fully responsible for any mistakes (including typos in the body text, inappropriate recipients lists, etc.) and you commit yourself to manually cleaning up any messes you create." That's the policy, and trust me, you made a real mess. Courcelles 21:14, 28 January 2015 (UTC)
- I am not trying to pass blame, but I am stating where errors occurred, and why, through entirely my fault. I was not under the impression that receiving a message would be harmful for anyone. I know now that I was wrong, and I hope you accept my apologies. As for as for what I should manually do, are you suggesting I remove the messages from your talkpages? I will certainly do so if you wish. CFCF (talk) 21:35, 28 January 2015 (UTC)
- I also wish to make clear this type of issue will not occur again. CFCF (talk) 21:57, 28 January 2015 (UTC)
- If you give me list of pages that should be removed (e.g. get the correct list and subtract it from the incorrect one), I will do it for you by bot. Amir (talk) 23:54, 28 January 2015 (UTC)
- I do not think the messages should now be removed again. That just causes more unnecessary notifications to users. I got the message 4 times or so, I don't want to get it removed 4 times now. --MF-W 17:18, 29 January 2015 (UTC)
- As MF-Warburg says I don't think it will be a good idea, as the issue was the notifications. Removing them by bot would produce new notifications, no? CFCF (talk) 19:15, 29 January 2015 (UTC)

Medical Translation Project related
[edit]Hello, this is a "bit" late response to this call. If help is still needed I'm happy to help as much as I can, feel free to ask. —Ah3kal (talk) 21:10, 14 April 2016 (UTC)
Through June, we’re organizing an Inspire Campaign to encourage and support new ideas focusing on addressing harassment toward Wikimedia contributors. The 2015 Harassment Survey has shown evidence that harassment in various forms - name calling, threats, discrimination, stalking, and impersonation, among others - is pervasive. Available methods and systems to deal with harassment are also considered to be ineffective. These behaviors are clearly harmful, and in addition, many individuals who experience or witness harassment participate less in Wikimedia projects or stop contributing entirely.
Proposals in any language are welcome during the campaign - research projects, technical solutions, community organizing and outreach initiatives, or something completely new! Funding is available from the Wikimedia Foundation for projects that need financial support. Constructive feedback on ideas is appreciated, and collaboration is encouraged - your skills and experience may help bring someone else’s project to life. Join us at the Inspire Campaign so that we can work together to develop ideas around this important and difficult issue. With thanks,

[edit]Hello,
you made a neutral vote on that propsal. I added a comment to your vote. Did you see it?
While i am writing, i'd like to point you at Allow a second email address. This proposal will not get in the top 10, but there are more proposals that address the same problem. If there was only one, it would have got a chance to score better. Therefore I plan to go on with it and therefore any support vote would be helpful for the future.

Thanks for your participation during the Inspire Campaign focused on outreach to outside knowledge networks from February 2017. I'm interested in hearing your experience during the campaign, so if you're able, I invite you to complete this brief survey to describe how you contributed to the campaign and how you felt about participating. I want to improve how campaigns are run, so let me know if there's something that could be done better for next time.
Please feel free to let me know on my talk page if you have any questions about the campaign or the survey. Thanks! I JethroBT (WMF) (talk) 18:34, 31 March 2017 (UTC)
Survey link error fixed

Adjusted text
[edit]There has been a request to inform all who voted in the RfC about interlinking accounts involved with paid editing about the following adjustment in the "statement of issue" on Sept 18th, 2017.
It was clarified that this effort will help deal not only with impersonation of specific Wikipedians but also claims of being in good standing made by those who are not.[2] Thanks. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 19:59, 26 September 2017 (UTC)

Attending Wikimania 2019? Suggestions for this panel?
[edit]Hi Carl,
Nice page!!! We met years ago in DC. I proposed this panel https://wikimania.wikimedia.org/wiki/2019:Education/Approaches_to_facilitate_use_of_platform_and_training_materials_in_languages_other_than_English?veaction=edit and now I am looking for potential participants who could move the discussion forward.
