Get started with the Lua interface to simplify the preparation of modules for translation in MetaWiki

Greetings!

The Language and Product Localization team has developed a Lua interface to simplify the preparation of Lua modules for translation in the MetaWiki platform. This means that module developers can now use the new Lua interface to load translatable strings, and the translators can translate them in the same translation interface that is used for templates and wiki pages.

This improvement makes it easier for translators to find and edit module strings without dealing with raw Lua code. It helps prevent mistakes that could break the module during translation.

We invite you to watch our demo video and read more about translatable modules to understand how it works. Please give us your feedback on this talk page on how well the Lua interface addresses the challenges in your workflow and how useful it is in module localization tasks. You can also refer to Module:User Wikimedia project, which was recently converted to utilize these messages, for example usage.

Your feedback is important as it will help us evaluate and decide how to continue developing and improving this interface, extend it to other wikis, or change our approach.

Thank you, and we anticipate your honest feedback.

Request for feedback: Jamshid Nurkulov

Hello Darafsh,

I kindly ask you to review this discussion and share your feedback [via email (u4c@wikimedia.org) or discussion page] regarding Jamshid Nurkulov, an active contributor of the Uzbek Wikipedia who is currently facing what I believe to be unfair accusations. Please share your thoughts about his involvement in international projects, his level of activity, and the value he brings to Wikimedia projects.

I sincerely hope that a dedicated contributor with many years of experience will not face a global block based on unfounded claims.

Getting the 25th Birthday of Wikipedia for the Iranian diaspora event on the Wikipedia 25 Birthday calendar

Hi Darafsh, I saw that you created an event for the Iranian diaspora to celebrate Wikipedia's 25th birthday. Thank you for doing that and adding it to the map of events! I want to make sure it shows up on the Meta-wiki hub calendar as well. I've set up the listing there to look for the phrase/words "Wikipedia 25" in the title of the event. Unfortunately this is the only way to "filter" events. Can't use categories yet. :) Since your event doesn't have that exact phrase in the title, it's not appearing. Would you mind changing the title of your event to have the phrase "Wikipedia 25" somewhere in it so it shows up in the listing of events? Chris Koerner (Wikimedia Foundation) [he/him] (talk) 18:58, 23 October 2025 (UTC)

@CKoerner (WMF) Thanks for letting me know! I’ve just moved the page accordingly, it’s now titled Event:Wikipedia 25: The Iranian diaspora and Everything should display correctly on the map now. Best, Darafsh (talk) 17:03, 27 October 2025 (UTC)
