Tab formatting[edit]

Hi Ed, thanks for playing around with the tab design. Feel free to change as you see fit. We'd also appreciate any advice on how to make the pages of WikiProject Open Access more useful. -- Daniel Mietchen - WiR/OS (talk) 23:47, 22 December 2012 (UTC)

I was actually just trying to figure out how you did it so I could make one for another page, and I kept accidentally editing the wrong page :D Worked out okay: http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimania_2014_bids/London EdSaperia (talk) 23:56, 22 December 2012 (UTC)
Yes, saw that and may well copy back at some point. -- Daniel Mietchen - WiR/OS (talk) 01:13, 23 December 2012 (UTC)

People.[edit]

You suggest that 70,000 Games Makers is the scale of support that would lead to a volunteer base for Wikimania 2014. I would suggest that the programme, which started years before the 2012 Games, is a completely different order of magnitude. A bad comparison methinks. Gordo (talk) 08:18, 4 March 2013 (UTC)

At a rough estimate, I think we'll need about 50 volunteers to do three shifts each. Between existing WMUK volunteers, my personal contacts and educational outreach, that should be pretty easy to manage. I'm writing something to this effect on the bid talk page. What I meant by the original comment was simply that we should comfortably be able to find enough volunteers for the event. 149.241.189.46 14:40, 5 March 2013 (UTC)
OK. But this is chalk and cheese... Gordo (talk) 15:00, 5 March 2013 (UTC)

Bid Logo in SVG[edit]

Hi, is the bid logo available in SVG?

From my memory of the area around the Barbican, signage is not always clear, and I wanted to mock up a TSRGD style sign with a suitable version of the logo...

Thanks.. 21:06, 1 May 2013 (UTC) ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 21:07, 1 May 2013 (UTC)

the PNG is all we've got right now! should be fairly quick to vectorise though EdSaperia (talk) 11:57, 3 May 2013 (UTC)

Digital democracy project[edit]

Hello Ed. I wanted to drop you a note, firstly to thank you for all of your input to the attempt to community source the submission to the Speaker's Commission on Digital Democracy. Even though the work hasn't been overwhelmed by large numbers of contributors I think it has led to something valuable. We are going to look at encouraging submission to the next theme - representation - and the final theme, when it is announced. Each theme will have a separate submission (to include the talk page) but at the time of the final one we'll be compiling some kind of report as an accompaniment. The second point is I definitely agree we need to encourage more people to participate directly on the call for the second theme (and those subsequent). I would love to get some suggestions from you on this. I have deliberately been quite reticent about promoting the project through Wikipedia channels as I don't want to do anything that could upset the community. Do you have any views on how we could get more people involved? Thank you for all of your help so far, it is appreciated. Stevie Benton (WMUK) (talk) 15:16, 1 July 2014 (UTC)

I think the way it's set up won't produce much more than what you have right now. I've been thinking about this a lot, and I think the questions we are asking are framed wrongly. If we want to get proper engagement, we need to create a model of the government as a wiki, and allow people to contribute wherever they see fit. Each page will represent a part of government or a policy or whatever, and the article will be a description of how it works now (with a talk page supporting creation of that), and then for each of those there would need to be a second page for how it should be improved (with its own talk page). You need multiple entrypoints to get wide and varied engagement, and avoid pre-framing the question as much as possible. The tricky part would be figuring out what policies allow you to come to consensus on the improvements pages. EdSaperia (talk) 16:18, 1 July 2014 (UTC)

Latest stage of submission to the Speaker's Commission on Digital Democracy[edit]

Hello there. I thought I would drop you a note as you kindly took part in the first stage of the efforts to crowdsource a submission to the Speaker's Commission on Digital Democracy. The second stage is now live and can be seen here. It would be great if you could help with putting together the submission on the second theme, which relates to representation. Also, if you have any suggestions on how we can widen participation, that would be very helpful. Thanks again for all of your help. Stevie Benton (WMUK) (talk) 11:02, 30 July 2014 (UTC)

Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees Elections 2015[edit]

Dear candidate. My general opinion about administration of Wikimedia is negative. Many texts and images had been removed with pretext of protection of rights of the owners of the copyright owners. The special permissions by the copyright owners were just ignored, and removed together with the files. In particular, this refers to images of the Soviet dissidents and their texts.

Below I suggest only few examples in order to let you know what is happening: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Sofiya_Kalistratova&oldid=649939072 https://ru.wikisource.org/w/index.php?title=Софья_Васильевна_Каллистратова&oldid=93595 https://ru.wikisource.org/w/index.php?title=Леонард_Борисович_Терновский&type=revision&diff=1312548&oldid=585736

I investigated the case and I revealed that many removals were performed by bureaucrat Lozman, who has absolutely no experience with obtaining permission from the copyright owners and does not even remember, who made him bureaucrat. However, this is only example.

Sorry for being late, but I just received the invitation to vote. You still have two days to change my opinion about at least one of the candidates suggested. One example of complain by the author is available at site TORI, http://mizugadro.mydns.jp/t/index.php/Kouznetsov,_permission I mention it because it has English version, although many Russian authors were offended in the similar way.

Now I formulate the question:

Do you think it is still possible to handle the cases mentioned?

Do you think that you can find time to deal with the cases mentioned?

Sincerely, Domitori (talk) 08:09, 28 May 2015 (UTC)

Hi Domitori. If a user is not abiding by the community agreed deletion policy then I recommend you raise it on the Commons Administrator Noticeboard. Have you tried this yet? If so, what was the result? EdSaperia (talk) 15:10, 29 May 2015 (UTC)

What future IdeaLab campaigns would you like to see?[edit]

IdeaLab logo dark orange.png

Hi there,

I’m Jethro, and I’m seeking your help in deciding topics for new IdeaLab campaigns that could be run starting next year. These campaigns aim to bring in proposals and solutions from communities that address a need or problem in Wikimedia projects. I'm interested in hearing your preferences and ideas for campaign topics!

Here’s how to participate:

Take care,

I JethroBT (WMF), Community Resources, Wikimedia Foundation. 03:34, 5 December 2015 (UTC)

Future IdeaLab Campaigns results[edit]

Inspire Campaign on content curation & review[edit]

WPCube.png

I've recently launched an Inspire Campaign to encourage new ideas focusing on content review and curation in Wikimedia projects. Wikimedia volunteers collaboratively manage vast repositories of knowledge, and we’re looking for your ideas about how to manage that knowledge to make it more meaningful and accessible. We invite you to participate and submit ideas, so please get involved today! The campaign runs until March 28th.

All proposals are welcome - research projects, technical solutions, community organizing and outreach initiatives, or something completely new! Funding is available from the Wikimedia Foundation for projects that need financial support. Constructive feedback on ideas is welcome - your skills and experience can help bring someone else’s project to life. Join us at the Inspire Campaign to improve review and curation tasks so that we can make our content more meaningful and accessible! I JethroBT (WMF) 05:39, 29 February 2016 (UTC)

Open Call for Individual Engagement Grants[edit]

IEG barnstar 2.png

Greetings! The Individual Engagement Grants (IEG) program is accepting proposals until April 12th to fund new tools, research, outreach efforts, and other experiments that enhance the work of Wikimedia volunteers. Whether you need a small or large amount of funds (up to $30,000 USD), IEGs can support you and your team’s project development time in addition to project expenses such as materials, travel, and rental space.

With thanks, I JethroBT (WMF), Community Resources 15:56, 31 March 2016 (UTC)

Participate in the Inspire Campaign and help address harassment![edit]

NounProject Leaves.png

Through June, we’re organizing an Inspire Campaign to encourage and support new ideas focusing on addressing harassment toward Wikimedia contributors. The 2015 Harassment Survey has shown evidence that harassment in various forms - name calling, threats, discrimination, stalking, and impersonation, among others - is pervasive. Available methods and systems to deal with harassment are also considered to be ineffective. These behaviors are clearly harmful, and in addition, many individuals who experience or witness harassment participate less in Wikimedia projects or stop contributing entirely.

Proposals in any language are welcome during the campaign - research projects, technical solutions, community organizing and outreach initiatives, or something completely new! Funding is available from the Wikimedia Foundation for projects that need financial support. Constructive feedback on ideas is appreciated, and collaboration is encouraged - your skills and experience may help bring someone else’s project to life. Join us at the Inspire Campaign so that we can work together to develop ideas around this important and difficult issue. With thanks,

I JethroBT (WMF) (talk) 17:47, 31 May 2016 (UTC) (Opt-out instructions)

[Wikipedia & Education User Group] Updates: November 2018[edit]

Greetings,

Integrating Wikimedia with education is a powerful strategy for the outreach of Wikimedia projects. Realising this concept, a group of leaders promoted this and formed the Wikipedia Education Collaborative. After some time, this evolved to become a user group, officially recognised by the Affiliations Committee in June 2018. The user group had its first board elections earlier in September. In the process to formalise activities and give a shape the user group for long-term sustainability, we are now revamping our processes. Thanks for supporting us during incubation stages, we are now inviting you to formally join the user group by following the instructions on the members' page. Being a member will allow you to be a part of this wonderful collaboration and also do interesting stuff.

Kind regards
On behalf of Wikipedia and Education UG, MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 11:44, 10 November 2018 (UTC)
