Images[edit]

Please consider uploading images to the Commons. where they will work in the future if your work is posted on some other WMF wiki. Regardless, there or here, you have to add a tag from Category:License templates to each image you upload, or it may be deleted as a copyright violation, as there is no information on the copyright status. Thanks. Courcelles 23:11, 30 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Oh I will move my work to commons. There are a lot of plots that are intermediate work. They are really only useful as a log of the things I am working on. I'll bring the final versions to commons when they are ready. :) --EpochFail 00:04, 1 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Your continued help is needed[edit]

Hi. Based partly on the research you provided, we are working towards solutions for New Page Patrol coupled with new user retention. These matters are now critical and need urgent attention. I have made a request HERE for a bit more data. Anything you can do to help would be much appreciated. Thanks. --Kudpung 23:37, 27 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It looks like you are asking for a table of data between Sept'09-11. What specifically are you hoping to find out? I did some work with the new page patroller workload, but it looks like you commented on the speed of speedy deletions talk page... so I'm unsure. --EpochFail 01:28, 28 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. The original table was published at http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Research:The_Speed_of_Speedy_Deletions, Sub-section: Speedy deletions. The data is required to demonstrate:

  • Any decline/increase in the creation of new articles in the sample period
  • Any decline/increase in the deletion of new articles in the sample period
  • Deletion of new articles expressed as percentages of creations of new articles, by quarter year over the sample period
  • Data required: All columns in the original table 'Speedy deletions'
  • Sample period: August 2009 through August 2011
  • Sample users: ALL users in the period

Graphs required: For the sample period by quarter year, curves for:

  • New articles created
  • Total CSD deletions

The research at new page patroller workload providfed some interesting discussion that hlped towards identifying areas of concern, but somehow it got interpreted that patrolles are suffering from stress, overload, or burn-out, where nothing of that kind was reported or demonstrated by any research. A user from en.Wiki has prepared performance details on individual patrollers.

I unfortunately know nothing about the technical methods of extraction and extrapolation of data, so anything you, or the person who prepared the original table can do would be much appreciated, I don't need this overnight, but it would be good to be able to report at a meeting this week that something is underway.

Many thanks for you help in advance. Don't hesitate to ask me for any more info that I can provide. You can contact me at en:User talk:Kudpung, or by email at kudpung.wikipedia@gmail.com, or by chat live per Skype video at Kudpung1 (time GMT+7, 7 days per week)
--Kudpung 04:27, 28 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Ahh! Sorry to give you the run-around, but that work was performed by Stuart Geiger (as listed on the page). He performed the analysis over the amount of time between page creation and speedy deletion nomination. I just looked at the number of patrolled pages as a proxy for the workload of individual page patrollers. I think that Steven mistakenly directed you to me because I happened to do a project with "Page patrol" in the title.
When you say that "[the research on page patroller workload] got interpreted that patrolles are suffering from stress [...]" do you mean that you got that from my write-up or discussions on the topic elsewhere? --EpochFail 14:42, 28 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
That assumption came from the discussion at Research talk:Patroller work load, but I think it was already being suggested elsewhere. It may also have come from a comment that Jimbo made about page patrolling way back in 2005 when we only had 800,000 articles in the 'pedia, and the decision then was taken to stop anons creating new articles. --Kudpung 15:41, 28 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I'm n ot sure that Stuart is even following the discussions here or watching his talk page. --Kudpung 15:47, 28 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Copyright problem with File:No science.png[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:No science.png. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the file. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their license and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at this page. Thanks again for your cooperation. 77.184.146.157 22:43, 9 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

L2 translation[edit]

Two Brazilian users (HAndrade (WMF) and danilo.mac) asked me to make the L2 pages translatable. Sorry if this could be disruptive. When you do create Research:Labs2/Projects/Preload (like Research:Labs2/Ideas/Preload) or Research:Labs2/Projects/Editintro (like Research:Labs2/Ideas/Editintro), tell me and I will mark it for translation. PiRSquared17 (talk) 02:44, 18 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! Will do! --EpochFail (talk) 03:12, 18 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Is it okay for users to submit ideas/projects in other languages and then translate them, or would you recommend English? PiRSquared17 (talk) 03:21, 18 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure what the implications of my answer are. I think that it is important that people are able to submit their work even if it isn't in English. I would certainly recommend submitting research project/ideas in English if possible, but I wouldn't want to turn anyone away -- especially if someone is willing to do translation work. --EpochFail (talk) 03:29, 18 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Okay. Do you think we should split the venues (this) into a different page? That would make the hackathon page better for translators. PiRSquared17 (talk) 13:51, 18 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. I think that is a good idea. I'll make a few edits and ping you. --EpochFail (talk) 15:56, 18 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

┌─────────────────────────────────┘
Actually, I can't get to this right away. I'll have to get back to you in a few hours. Sorry for the delay. Thanks for your work on this. :) --EpochFail (talk) 16:33, 18 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

PiRSquared17, I just got an opportunity to sit down with this. I'm not clear on whether you'd like to have this section sub-transcluded or to have a separate page that would be linked from the main page. Could you clairify for me and then I'll get to work? --EpochFail (talk) 18:53, 18 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I'm personally fine with either option, but I originally was referring to transcluding a (non-translated) subpage. PiRSquared17 (talk) 19:11, 18 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Awesome. That's pretty easy. I'll get it done right away. --EpochFail (talk) 19:17, 18 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Ugh. I tried, but then when a new participant tries to add their name to a meetup list, they get redirected back to the transcluded subpage. I'll have to revisit this after thinking of a better option. Sorry for the delay. --EpochFail (talk) 19:22, 18 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The Italian Wikipedia is not quite well[edit]

Hello, Aaron, I'm in serious need of some advice and I hope you can help. I'm getting increasingly alarmed by the statistics of the Italian Wikipedia:

Now, numbers always go up and down, but for many years it.wiki has been mostly over 2800-3000 active editors per month and April has been the 9th consecutive month with 2600 or less, something last happened in December 2007. Even number of edits, both registered and unregistered, has suddenly collapsed around July 2013. Page views seem stable and there is no obvious indicator of the source of the problem. For a while I've hoped this would only be temporary, but it seems to get worse.

I didn't compare numbers in detail but I don't see such a collapse on other top 10 Wikipedias. There are so many possible suspects, how can we identify the problem? I think swift corrective measures may be needed to avoid a disaster: it's probably the community's responsibility, but I and we have no idea where to start looking. At the cost of looking euro-centric and everything, this is the 7th biggest Wikipedia by traffic and active editors, it can't be ignored. --Nemo 13:54, 30 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Nemo. Thanks for bringing this to me. I think you're right and that we should look into it. I've created Research:The sudden decline of Italian Wikipedia (kind of ominously named now that I think of it. Feel free to rename if you care.) to capture your problem description and to act as a focus of our work as we start looking into this. In the meantime, can you help me work out a set of hypotheses worth testing? --EpochFail (talk) 14:14, 30 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you! I posted on your talk page first because I didn't have hypotheses to propose yet. :) I added to the page the ideas that I came up with so far, but they're all quite hard to translate to actual research/verifiable hypotheses. The easiest thing is probably checking some "standard" stats, which are usually looked only in aggregate, specifically for it.wiki; if we're lucky a smoking gun pops up. --Nemo 16:09, 30 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Reversions and RCOM[edit]

Hi Aaron @Halfak (WMF):,

If you are going to revert my changes, I'd really appreciate an explanation from you as to why. All of the facts appear to argue that my edits are actually a description of current practice. Please see [1] for what I've been looking at regarding RCOM, and consider commenting in that thread as well if you care to. Nathan T 01:10, 17 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Nathan:. From my point of view, you made an unwarranted change that was obviously false. I was honestly not sure whether it was vandalism or not. I'd appreciate that, if you'd like to discuss wiki research activities, you do so using the wiki-research-l mailing list -- since that's where we tend to coordinate. Honestly, I find wikimedia-l to be entirely too high traffic to both track and get my work done. --EpochFail (talk) 14:50, 17 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Wikidata SQL question[edit]

Hello. I hope I'm asking the right person. I saw your name in Research:Quarry history. Could you tell me, please, where can I find the description of Wikidata tables? I want to do a very reasonable thing: recognize a name of some Wikipedia page from one language in another. For example, the query for en, milk, fr should return "lait", milk in french. Thank you very much in advance, IKhitron (talk) 14:01, 22 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi IKhitron, I'm not that familiar with querying WikiData. But I bet you can find someone who is if you join me on IRC at [webchat.freenode.net/?channel=wikimedia-research #wikimedia-research]. I'm "halfak". If you let me know when you are there, I'll either look into the querying service with you or help you find someone who knows what's up.  :) --EpochFail (talk) 22:34, 23 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks a lot, I'll do this just now. IKhitron (talk) 15:05, 25 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I've added a work log page, is it fine? Feel free to move it elsewhere or index it in another way or whatever. :) --Nemo 09:49, 5 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Yes! Woo! I'm stoked to have you join me in the transparent worklog revolution! :) Please feel free to create worklogs as needed. --EpochFail (talk) 17:28, 7 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Programmatic Quarry access[edit]

Hi EpochFail, I see at Research:Quarry#Downloading_a_resultset that you can download the latest data result from a query, but is there a way to programmatically execute the query? What I would like to do is to have a query automatically executed on some periodic basis (probably daily) and copy the data to a Wikipedia page. The programming side of reading and parsing json, then posting it to a Wikipedia page is easy, but the one thing I don't see is a way to execute the query without logging in interactively. Thanks. --B (talk) 11:10, 21 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi B. I don't believe that this is possible yet to do through quarry yet. However you could try querying the LabsDB directly from your script. That's the DB that Quarry has access to. Are you running your script from tool labs? --EpochFail (talk) 12:48, 21 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
What language(s) does the labs site support? I am expert-level in C++ and C#, I know enough php to get by on the rare occasion I have to use it, and know no python at all. My hope was to run it as a C# program from my own computer. I found a C# toolkit called DotNetWikiBot which makes it very simple to do the coding I want. But a possible alternative would be to use something hosted at wmflabs just to run the query and stage it somewhere and then do everything else I want to do in C#. Thanks. --B (talk) 14:47, 21 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Labs supports whatever language you can compile/run in Ubuntu 14.04. If necessary, you can start up your own VM. If you can connect to a MySQL database and run a query from C++/C#, then I expect you'll have no trouble. --EpochFail (talk) 15:23, 21 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi EpochFail, Quarry seems to be down ... when I go to http://quarry.wmflabs.org/ I get 502 Bad Gateway. --B (talk) 15:54, 18 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Never mind, I see it's a part of a larger tool server problem. --B (talk) 18:25, 18 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

EpochFail, congratulations! You now have the rights of an administrator on Meta. Please take a moment to read the Meta:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Meta:Requests for help from a sysop or bureaucrat, and Meta:Requests for deletion, but also Talk:Spam blacklist and Talk:Interwiki map), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings, or modifications of protected pages. The majority of the actions of administrators can be reversed by the other admins, except for history merges which must thus be treated with particular care.

Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-admin @ irc.freenode.net. You may find Commons:Guide to adminship to be useful reading although it doesn't always completely apply here at Meta.

Please also check or add your entry to Meta:Administrators#List of administrators and the Template:List of administrators.

Inspire Campaign on content curation & review[edit]

I've recently launched an Inspire Campaign to encourage new ideas focusing on content review and curation in Wikimedia projects. Wikimedia volunteers collaboratively manage vast repositories of knowledge, and we’re looking for your ideas about how to manage that knowledge to make it more meaningful and accessible. We invite you to participate and submit ideas, so please get involved today! The campaign runs until March 28th.

All proposals are welcome - research projects, technical solutions, community organizing and outreach initiatives, or something completely new! Funding is available from the Wikimedia Foundation for projects that need financial support. Constructive feedback on ideas is welcome - your skills and experience can help bring someone else’s project to life. Join us at the Inspire Campaign to improve review and curation tasks so that we can make our content more meaningful and accessible! I JethroBT (WMF) 05:39, 29 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I'm interested in hearing your feedback about your participation during campaign, so if you're able, I invite you to complete this brief survey to describe how you contributed to the campaign and how you felt about participating.

Immediate results of the campaign can be found here. Please feel free to review them and let me know if you have any questions about the campaign or the survey. Thanks! I JethroBT (WMF) (talk) 02:31, 26 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

(Opt-out instructions)

Through June, we’re organizing an Inspire Campaign to encourage and support new ideas focusing on addressing harassment toward Wikimedia contributors. The 2015 Harassment Survey has shown evidence that harassment in various forms - name calling, threats, discrimination, stalking, and impersonation, among others - is pervasive. Available methods and systems to deal with harassment are also considered to be ineffective. These behaviors are clearly harmful, and in addition, many individuals who experience or witness harassment participate less in Wikimedia projects or stop contributing entirely.

Proposals in any language are welcome during the campaign - research projects, technical solutions, community organizing and outreach initiatives, or something completely new! Funding is available from the Wikimedia Foundation for projects that need financial support. Constructive feedback on ideas is appreciated, and collaboration is encouraged - your skills and experience may help bring someone else’s project to life. Join us at the Inspire Campaign so that we can work together to develop ideas around this important and difficult issue. With thanks,

Useranalysis in Wikipedia?[edit]

Hi! Braveheart suggested in this Diskusssion, that you may be the right person to ask, when it comes to analysing the user behaviour in Wikipedia. The background is the plan to relaunch the main page of german Wikipedia. And before we start of into the blue, it would be good to know, how and how often our readers use the different elements and sections of the current main page.

Is there already a kind of user analysis in MediaWiki or Wikipedia, which goes beyond just counting pageviews? Is there something like Piwik.

  • If yes: How can we gain access to that? (I already own OTRS-Rights - if that's encessary).
  • If no: Is it possible to integrate something like this, without breaking WMF privacy rules?

Thanks for your support! // Martin Kraft (talk) 13:24, 6 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Ping Milimetric and Ewulczyn. I'm thinking that we could learn something about click-through rates from the mainpage using the Wikipedia clickstream dataset by correlating relevant pairs with the time at which certain pages were linked from the mainpage. I'm pinging you two in case you have some more thoughts. --EpochFail (talk) 19:13, 6 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
That sounds feasible, EpochFail, the data is all there. You could even look at the pageview api for this data if you don't want to examine referrers and stuff like that. As for piwik, that's not meant for instrumenting any kind of readership except small slices like the iOS app. Milimetric (talk) 19:28, 9 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Here's some notes from discussion in #wikimedia-analytics (I'm "halfak" in IRC)
[12:44:15] <nuria_> halfak: FYI that our instance of piwik is not mean for big projects like wikipedia though, same issues than unique tokens philosophically but also the more concrete blocker that is extremely small scale. I will let milimetric add on I think that is the gist
[12:45:28] <halfak> nuria_, yeah. I figured that piwik was out, but if you read my proposal, I suggest that we just temporally correlate pageviews of articles when they are featured on the main page.
[12:45:39] <halfak> I think it could work pretty well.
[12:45:54] <halfak> There's some methods there that we can borrow from some of nettrom's work.
[12:46:26] <halfak> http://www-users.cs.umn.edu/~bhecht/publications/qualityimprovement_cscw2015.pdf
[12:46:43] <halfak> He looked at the effect that featuring an article had on editing patterns.
[12:46:54] <halfak> Could ask similar questions for viewing patterns.
[12:47:32] <halfak> I'm thinking that you could use the pageview API to query for the view rates of features pages before and during "featured" status on the mainpage.
[12:47:46] <halfak> And do breakdowns based on where on the mainpage a particular link if shown.
[12:48:04] <halfak> It would give you a basic understand of what elements drive traffic. Clicks are implicit.
[12:52:42] <nuria_> halfak: ah, yes, that indeed seems doable is "featured" status is on the scale of "days"
[12:53:14] <halfak> nuria_, yeah. There might be some day-wise overlap, but I think we can work with that either way.
[12:53:20] <nuria_> *seems doable IF "featured" status spans at least a day or more
[12:54:01] <halfak> Signal/noise-wise, we should be able to detect a substantial perturbation even if the featured window is smaller than a day and doesn't overlap with the UTC date

I'm sorry but I've opened Meta:Requests_for_help_from_a_sysop_or_bureaucrat#EpochFail_behaviour_on_Meta:Babel. If you wish to comment, feel free to do so. —MarcoAurelio 22:40, 2 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

EpochFail, FYI you're still looking quite aggressive towards other users. --Nemo 17:07, 3 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your note, Nemo_bis. Can you clarify what comments you see as aggressive? --EpochFail (talk) 17:17, 3 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Each and the whole. Nemo 17:18, 3 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Nemo, that's not very helpful. --EpochFail (talk) 17:21, 3 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Does [2] that you don't retract your accusations? --Nemo 20:38, 25 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I still think that the discussions was closed inappropriately. I'm surprised that other meta admins/stewards would tolerate someone so actively involved in a discussion closing it on a major holiday without acknowledging that it had some support. I think I've made that clear and it has not been directly challenged or explained by the closing admin. I think your summary of that discussion was very questionable. Do you really want to debate that yours is more appropriate? --EpochFail (talk) 20:51, 25 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Research:Top edited English Wikipedia articles in 2016[edit]

Hi, Aaron!

Can you help to create a Research:Top edited Ukrainian Wikipedia articles in 2016?

I am also very keen to get a Research:Top read Ukrainian Wikipedia articles in 2016. I get this information on a monthly basis via https://tools.wmflabs.org/topviews/?project=uk.wikipedia.org&platform=all-access&date=last-month&excludes= but was unable to find a list for all the year. For 2015 there was http://tools.wmflabs.org/wikitrends/2015.html#ukrainian

Thank you! --Perohanych (talk) 10:44, 6 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Perohanych, I can help with the top edited. I'll get to work on that and ping again when I've got something. --EpochFail (talk) 16:09, 6 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Done Perohanych, see Research:Top edited Ukrainian Wikipedia articles in 2016 with results. --EpochFail (talk) 16:40, 6 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

New wiki on ORES[edit]

Hi. What's the process for adding a new wiki in ORES? What does it take to train the network?--Strainu (talk) 23:15, 21 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Strainu. See Objective Revision Evaluation Service/Get support.  :) --EpochFail (talk) 14:45, 23 January 2017 (UTC)[reply]

ORES & Page Curation[edit]

EpochFail, I watched your hour-long video with great interest. Thank you so much for listening equally to my hour-long rant on Skype and bringing me rapidly up to date on ORES and its capabilities and limitations.

Whilst I welcome any form of AI that will help preserve what is now a seriously dwindling public respect for the quality of Wikipedia content, before deploying (or even developing) ORES for Page Curation, we need to establish why the patroller community is largely resistant to adopting the New Pages Feed and its Page Curation Tool as the default process for controlling new intake. The reasons are actually quite clear but on its own admission the Foundation no longer regards addressing them as a priority.

One important way to address this and significantly reduce the fire hose of trash is to educate new users the instant they register, on what they can and cannot insert in the Wikipedia. A proper welcome page has never been developed and a 2011 attempt by Brandon to create one (Article Creation Work Flow) as part of the Page Curation process was thwarted by internal events within the WMF. This was the other half of the Page Curation project which was begun by the Foundation in answer to the community's overwhelming demand for en:WP:ACTRIAL (which in face of an impenetrable backlog might now soon have to become become a reality).

AI is not a panacea - it should assist but not seek to replace the dysfunctional human aspect of the triage of new pages, or be a palliative for the improvement of the parts of the Curation GUI that the Foundation will not prioritise. New Page Patrolling is the only firewall against unwanted new pages, not only is it now a very serious critical issue, but it should be the Foundation's single top priority before anything else of any kind. Thanks for your participation during the Inspire Campaign focused on outreach to outside knowledge networks from February 2017. I'm interested in hearing your experience during the campaign, so if you're able, I invite you to complete this brief survey to describe how you contributed to the campaign and how you felt about participating. I want to improve how campaigns are run, so let me know if there's something that could be done better for next time.

Please feel free to let me know on my talk page if you have any questions about the campaign or the survey. Thanks! I JethroBT (WMF) (talk) 18:34, 31 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
