Urgent: Incomplete candidate application[edit]

Hello @Gilbert Ndihokubwayo: Thank you for applying as a candidate to the Movement Charter's Drafting Committee. This is a message to let you know that all the field of the application template are mandatory (except for adding a photo, which is optional). Because you have left one or more of the mandatory fields empty, your application is currently incomplete and, if not completed by 1 September, will not be considered during the selection process. We kindly ask you to complete the application as soon as possible. If you're facing any issues with this, please let me know and I'll do my best to help out --Abbad (WMF) (talk) 12:41, 5 August 2021 (UTC).[reply]

My candidature to the Movement Charter's Drafting Committee[edit]

Hello dear Abbad.

Thank you for your message, I am glad to kindly read from you about my candidature to the Movement Charter's Drafting Committee. I had encountered difficulties to submit my application, the reason why they are some field not fulfilled. I will redo and sent my candidature.

In the meantime, in the application template, I did not distinguish the “image” which is optional, and the “image caption”. Are these the same? If not, can you tell me what to fulfill at the “image caption” item? and how to do it? Waiting forward to reading from you! --Gilbert Ndihokubwayo (talk) 15:35, 5 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Gilbert Ndihokubwayo: Dear Gilbert, apologies for the delay in my reply (you haven't pinged me so I'd to manually check the talk page). To answer your question, the "image caption" is NOT needed unless you're adding an "image", which is completely optional and up to you (in other words, both the "image" and "image caption" are optional). I hope that helps. If you're having any other difficulty with completing your application, please let me know --Abbad (WMF) (talk) 10:07, 11 August 2021 (UTC).[reply]

Translations and tvars[edit]

Hi Gilbert! Thank you for your recent translations for Tech News.

I just wanted to remind you that we should not translate the $tvar words themselves, as those must remain the same in every translation. E.g. I fixed them back with this edit.

Similarly, we need to keep the plain code for the "time/date" entries (I fixed those back in this edit).

That's it! Thanks again. Quiddity (WMF) (talk) 01:29, 13 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Quiddity (WMF)!
Thank you for your message, I’m happy you have fixed the words that I wouldn’t translate.
Please, what do I have to understand by “$tvar words”?
This will be helpful for me in future when translating items.
Kind regards! Gilbert Ndihokubwayo (talk) 17:48, 13 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, sorry. The name "tvar" is the shortened version of "translation variable", and it means the pieces of translatable-text which should be identical in all the translations. It's usually used for links, and sometimes other pieces of content. It often helps to save effort for the translators by not having to copy or type a long link, and/or makes all the translations consistent.
E.g. in this screenshot, in the original wikitext you can see how the Wikilink is shortened to just a "variable" in the translation interface. This lets every translation (easily) use the same link: (screenshot) File:Translate extension tvars - translation variables.png
(Semi-related: I just saw that this wasn't explained in the documentation, so I've added that screenshot, and a paragraph of text, into mw:Help:Extension:Translate/Translation_example#Translation_editor! Hopefully that makes sense?)
It's a complex system, but that's the core aspect that is helpful to know about. Hope that helps! Quiddity (WMF) (talk) 20:02, 13 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Great dear Quiddity (WMF)!
This is helpful. I take note of it for my future translating works, thank you for the clarification.
Kind regards! Gilbert Ndihokubwayo (talk) 20:35, 13 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Quiddity (WMF)!
I have a question:
Is “$year-$week” in “Tech News: $year-$week” a “$tvar words” or not?
Please let me know, thank you! Gilbert Ndihokubwayo (talk) 08:21, 18 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yup, those are tvars. You can check by comparing the translated text for another language, and the output. E.g.
Hope that helps! Quiddity (WMF) (talk) 18:36, 19 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Quiddity (WMF),
This helps me, great! Gilbert Ndihokubwayo (talk) 08:51, 20 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Gilbert. One note, and one question
  • Question: In the first translated bulletpoint of this week's edition, you had not used the $templatelinks tvar. I have attempted to stuff it in there, but perhaps if you see this within the next ~2 hours, you'd be able to fix it properly?
  • Note: In the same section, there was a plain wikilink to an English article. When you see links formatted like that, it is done with the expectation that editors will change it as they feel is appropriate, by either
    1. linking to the local language article (if it exists)
    2. leaving the link to the Enwiki article (if enough community members are likely to be to able to read the English article) [I changed the /rn translation to do this, for now]
    3. removing the link altogether
Hope that helps! Quiddity (WMF) (talk) 20:03, 19 September 2022 (UTC)[reply]

We need your feedback on a tool from the Wikimedia Summit[edit]

Reminder: the guide to using Baserow, presented during the Wikimedia Summit.

Hi! I'm contacting you as one of the participants in the Wikimedia Summit 2022, to kindly ask for your feedback through a 5-10 minute survey to evaluate 'Baserow' (note: the survey is on a Google form).

Baserow was a tool through which participants in the Summit co-created a database of Movement Strategy activities. We hope to learn from you how useful it may be to keep using it in the future to help document and connect on Movement Strategy work.

You are welcome and encouraged to fill out the survey in any language. Your feedback would be very appreciated --Abbad (WMF) (talk) 14:21, 16 February 2023 (UTC).[reply]
