ak language

Hey Jael,

I've seen you request to include the ak-language in CentralNotice targeting before, but I have never managed to find this language in my CN drop down-language selector. Is the language ISO-recognized, is the language available in our projects somewhere, for instance as language option on Wikidata, or for the Mediawiki software? I know my list does not always sync with the most up-to-date lists we see from ISO, our software can be behind on the more recent developments from the last years. Thanks, that's already helpful. I read here that we used to have an Akan Wikipedia, but that it was closed in 2023. Also, when I try to switch Mediawiki language in my preferences (which is used to target the banners), there is no Akan available to me. The page on the closure of the wiki mentions that Akan and Twi are the same, and I do have Twi available in my list. Would it be a correct alternative to use Twi in such cases, instead of Akan? Would that also be the alternative that Akan speakers would use? Ciell (talk) 17:25, 5 March 2025 (UTC)

Yes Ciell, Akan and Twi are mostly used interchangeably. Twi is like a subset of Akan but it is the most predominantly used so it's fine Jael28 (talk) 12:47, 10 March 2025 (UTC)

Disruption on Wikidata

I wanted to bring to your attention this discussion on the Wikidata Administrators’ Noticeboard, concerning disruptive editing by a user who was registered for multiple edit-a-thon events where you are listed as a facilitator. The user created numerous non-notable or empty items, did not respond to feedback, and continued creating such items over several days. All of the items have now been deleted.

During the incident, I pinged several facilitators listed on the Outreach Dashboard, including yourself, but none responded on-wiki or provided assistance. I understand that pings can sometimes be missed and that facilitators may not always be in close contact with participants, but when repeated disruption occurs as a result of an event, I believe facilitators have a responsibility to engage, especially when directly notified.

I hope you’ll review this case and consider how support and oversight could be improved in future events. In my view, responsiveness to issues like this is a basic expectation for those involved in Wikidata outreach and should be a factor when evaluating future grants or trusted roles. Get started with the Lua interface to simplify the preparation of modules for translation in MetaWiki

Greetings!

The Language and Product Localization team has developed a Lua interface to simplify the preparation of Lua modules for translation in the MetaWiki platform. This means that module developers can now use the new Lua interface to load translatable strings, and the translators can translate them in the same translation interface that is used for templates and wiki pages.

This improvement makes it easier for translators to find and edit module strings without dealing with raw Lua code. It helps prevent mistakes that could break the module during translation.

We invite you to watch our demo video and read more about translatable modules to understand how it works. Please give us your feedback on this talk page on how well the Lua interface addresses the challenges in your workflow and how useful it is in module localization tasks. You can also refer to Module:User Wikimedia project, which was recently converted to utilize these messages, for example usage.

Your feedback is important as it will help us evaluate and decide how to continue developing and improving this interface, extend it to other wikis, or change our approach.

After three years of development, Capacity Exchange (CapX) has entered a new cycle. Funded through a Wikimedia CH grant, from July to December 2026, we will be working to bring the tool to communities around the world and gather feedback from users, with a particular focus on community managers and leaders.

In this cycle, we are focused on building relationships with community managers and leaders, introducing them to CapX and exploring how it can help them carry out their work more easily and with better data to inform their decisions. We also want to understand how the tool could be improved for this audience and explore ways of adapting it to their needs.

Finally, we are presenting the possibilities of working with the CapX API to develop tools and solutions tailored to specific community needs.
