Wiki Loves Uniformed Services

Hi, It is good to see that you along with your team have organised this photography competition. I wish to volunteer for this event as well, I previously have organised WLE 2016, WLM 2016. Second, did the team convey about this decision on the mailing list. Also, have you applied for rapid grant. Best wishes. Abhinav619 (talk) 00:55, 16 May 2017 (UTC)

@Abhinav619: Thanks for the interest. Yes, the contest has forwarded to the India mailing list. We have applied for the grant, it has been approved and we have already received the grant amount. --Regards, Krishna Chaitanya Velaga (talkmail) 01:10, 16 May 2017 (UTC)
@Krishna Chaitanya Velaga: That's great. I will write a mail to you with some of my suggestions. Do let me know if I could volunteer. Meanwhile, Congratulations on becoming WMIN EC.
@Krishna Chaitanya Velaga: I have created a maintenance tag for the project. I find several pictures that do not hold any relevance are being uploaded. Check Category:Maintenance for Wiki Loves Uniformed services (India)
@Abhinav619: I too have observed that. They will eliminated once the contest concludes. Anyways thanks for the help and interest, but as of I would formally decline your request. Perhaps, we'll need you after the conclusion, for different tasks such as categorization, elimination, nominating for deletion. --Regards, Krishna Chaitanya Velaga (talkmail) 16:47, 16 May 2017 (UTC)
@Krishna Chaitanya Velaga: No problem ! I am there anytime. A suggestion, shouldn't National Disaster Response Force be also incorporated in the list. At last, it is India's pride, being the first country to incorporate such service secondly some pics from the Chennai Floods 2015 could be uploaded.
@Abhinav619: Sure, please include them. Regards, Krishna Chaitanya Velaga (talkmail) 15:15, 23 May 2017 (UTC)
@Krishna Chaitanya Velaga: Done. Also I would suggest to use a hashtag on social media to endorse about the competition. Wikimedia India twitter could also lead results. Abhinav619 (talk) 02:51, 24 May 2017 (UTC)
@Abhinav619: Sure, you're most welcome. --Regards, Krishna Chaitanya Velaga (talkmail) 04:37, 24 May 2017 (UTC)

Incorrect Odia translations in site notice

Hi, just curious if you are a native speaker of Odia or got these two translations (1 and 2) from someone else. I found the aforementioned translations incorrect. Please note that they are going across all the Odia-language Wikimedia projects that are viewed by hundreds and thousands of readers, and other Wikimedia projects where users have set their interface language as Odia. You can always request the community for translation on the Village Pump when you are not a native speaker. On the other hand, if you have got the translation from someone else, it is important to attribute them -- either they themselves can submit the translation or you can mention their username in the summary field so one of the experienced Odia Wikimedians can review the translations before they go live. Hope this can be improved in the future. --Subhashish Panigrahi (talk) 04:46, 21 February 2018 (UTC)

Template Wizard script available for testing

Hello. I'm contacting you because you voted for the Infobox Wizard in the 2017 Community Wishlist Survey.

The Infobox Wizard has gotten an upgrade - it's now a Template Wizard which works for infoboxes and all other templates. The feature is being developed as an extension (which will allow for localization) but there is a prototype user script which works well.

The Wishlist Team would love it if you could take a few minutes to try the Template Wizard prototype script out and give us feedback on whether it lives up to your expectations. This feedback will help build the script into an extension. To get started, add the following to your Special:MyPage/common.js -

mw.loader.load( 'https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Samwilson/TemplateWizard.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript' );

The Template Wizard will show up as a puzzle-piece icon in the 2010 WikiEditor. You can click on the icon to insert a template. Your thoughts are needed on whether it makes sense for the wizard to be available for all users by default or if there should be a preference for it. If it's a preference, what should the default be? Please leave your feedback here. Thank you! -- Keegan (WMF) (talk) 22:41, 28 March 2018 (UTC)

Commond deletion bot requirements

I'm contacting you because you supported the Commons Deletion Bot proposal in the 2017 Community Wishlist. The Wishlist team has finalized the draft specifications for how the bot will work, and are seeking review in confirming or discussing the plans for the bot. If you have some time, please take a look and leave a comment. Thanks, happy editing to you. - Keegan (WMF) (talk) 19:06, 12 April 2018 (UTC)

#1Lib1Ref from The Wikipedia Library

The Wikipedia Library – #1Lib1Ref

#1Lib1Ref is happening again in May!

#1Lib1Ref, the annual campaign where librarians add references to improve Wikipedia, is coming back again this year, running from May 15th to June 5th, 2018.

  • Why twice? We heard from you a desire to run it again out of excitement, because May is not summer vacation for the southern hemisphere, and because Spanish Wikipedia's birthday also falls in May. This is a great expansion of the event and it means that there is another opportunity to make Wikipedia more factual and verifiable by leveraging the expertise of librarians around the world.
  • How does this relate to the main campaign in January? We encourage librarians, community members, and affiliates to make 1Lib1Ref their own. So whether we call this 1Lib1Ref May, 1Lib1Ref for the Southern Hemisphere, or 1Lib1Ref Strikes Back, the point is the excitement is building again, and we'd like you to be a part of it.
  • If I participated in January, do I have to do it again in May? It's entirely up to you, this is just another chance if you want to do more, or if you couldn't get around to January activities. This is a pilot for us, too, so we'll see how it goes and discuss what we learned after the May campaign.
  • How can you get involved?

Sincerely,

On behalf of The Wikipedia Library Team --MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 08:40, 16 April 2018 (UTC)

Unfair deletion of ANUSHA GUNASEKERA

this politician meets the notability guideline of holding an office in the local government so why are you'll so interested in deleting a notable article which is 100% unfair. 2nd Innings (talk) 11:55, 29 April 2018 (UTC)

@2nd Innings: Thanks for your contributions to Wikipedia. I think you misunderstood the whole issue. I don't want to comment on notability of the subject, and I am unsure about it. But I am just making sure that the deletion runs smoothly. The Afd template has to be there on the article, until the 7-day period is over. Other editors will check the sources, and decide whether to keep or delete the article. Regards, Krishna Chaitanya Velaga (talkmail) 13:21, 29 April 2018 (UTC)

Writing contest WW2 resistance in the Netherlands

Hi KCVelaga,

A few months ago, you've been in contact with Taketa about a writing contest about WW2 resistance in the Netherlands that he was co-organising on behalf of Wikimedia Nederland. The Dutch version of that contest ran in May (contest page here), but the international version did not materialize. However, Wikimedia Nederland still intends to organise something, at least on ENWP, for example in November. Since Taketa mentioned that you were interested in the idea, I'm contacting you whether that's still the case. As for the set-up, I am currently thinking about using the contest toolkit on ENWP tot set things up. However, I also saw that WP:MILHIST runs a running contest; maybe it would also be possible to create some tie-in with that contest, for example for the month November? I would be interested to hear your thoughts on this! Best, --AWossink - WMNL (talk) 09:40, 25 July 2018 (UTC)

@AWossink: Hi Arne, I am really sorry that I missed this message. Yes, I'm very interested in this project, but I am engaged in several other projects until the end of October. So I might not able to help with this at this moment. However, I'll be happy to connect you with some other users who might be interested to help. Pinging the lead coordinator of MILHIS Project, @AustralianRupert:. I am sure that Rupert will suggest the best way to collaborate. Regards, KCVelaga (talkmail) 15:22, 5 August 2018 (UTC)
G'day, Krishna and Arne. I am scaling back my involvement with co-ord duties and and am considering retiring from Wikipedia due to various reasons which aren't really appropriate to discuss here. (Sorry). As such, I won't be getting involved here. I will offer this, though: I think it would be best to keep this specific contest separate from the general running contest. To work out the details, it is probably best to start a discussion on the main co-ord talk page to see if other co-ords are interested in offering an opinion, or getting involved. Once the general details are discussed, a proposal should be added to main MILHIST talk page to allow the project's members to have a say. Anyway, all the best with your endeavour. Regards, AustralianRupert (talk) 02:16, 6 August 2018 (UTC)

[Wikipedia & Education User Group] Updates: November 2018

Greetings,

Integrating Wikimedia with education is a powerful strategy for the outreach of Wikimedia projects. Realising this concept, a group of leaders promoted this and formed the Wikipedia Education Collaborative. After some time, this evolved to become a user group, officially recognised by the Affiliations Committee in June 2018. The user group had its first board elections earlier in September. In the process to formalise activities and give a shape the user group for long-term sustainability, we are now revamping our processes. Thanks for supporting us during incubation stages, we are now inviting you to formally join the user group by following the instructions on the members' page. Being a member will allow you to be a part of this wonderful collaboration and also do interesting stuff.

Kind regards

Invitation to join the Project Grants Committee

Dear Krishna,

Thank you for applying to be a candidate for the Project Grants Committee. I'd like to tentatively invite you to join the committee, pending an orientation call to describe the requirements and your confirmation that you'd like to participate.

If you are available to participate in an orientation call, please contact me with your earliest available times at cschilling(_AT_)wikimedia.org and we will confirm a time over email.

I look forward to working with you on the committee!

Take care, I JethroBT (WMF) (talk) 22:28, 11 December 2018 (UTC)

@I JethroBT (WMF): Thanks for the invitation. I'll email you with my availability times very soon. KCVelaga (talk) 00:46, 12 December 2018 (UTC)

This template is redundant with the updated echo system letting someone know that they have an email, and the appropriate notification message set. If they have turned off the notification, then you are subverting their request to not to know. Why do you think that we need it?  — billinghurst sDrewth 11:11, 16 February 2019 (UTC)

To also note that we should, by preference, be importing templates with their histories and their authorship, rather than copy and pasting templates, and their documentation, and losing that documentation and corresponding licensed aspect.  — billinghurst sDrewth 11:14, 16 February 2019 (UTC)
@Billinghurst: Thanks for the message. We recentely created a cross-community resource exchange for all Indian Wikipedias; Indic Wikimedia Portal/Resource Exchange. We need it there, for indication. The entire thing is still under construction though, we need it there to mark the status for a request. KCVelaga (talk) 11:15, 16 February 2019 (UTC)

#1Lib1Ref May 2019

The Wikipedia Library – #1Lib1Ref

As you might've already known, #1Lib1Ref is happening again in May!

#1Lib1Ref, the annual campaign where librarians add references to improve Wikipedia, is back for another round, running from May 15th to June 5th, 2019.

  • Not every part of the world is in sync, more particularly the southern and northern hemispheres. While the January version of the #1lib1ref campaign works well mostly for the northern hemisphere, it doesn't for the countries below the equator. Hence #1lib1ref May! This is a great expansion of the event and it means that there is another opportunity to make Wikipedia more factual and verifiable by leveraging the expertise of librarians around the world.
  • While this campaign encourages participation from the southern hemisphere, we would love for you to join us even if you participated in the January campaign – after all, Wikipedia is only as strong as its references! So whether we call this 1Lib1Ref May, 1Lib1Ref for the Southern Hemisphere, or 1Lib1Ref Strikes Back, the point is the excitement is building again, and we'd like you to be a part of it.

Many thanks for your speedy assistance in setting up our #1lib1ref project! We're excited to contribute. Charm City Archivist (talk) 13:03, 17 May 2019 (UTC)

@Charm City Archivist: Thanks for the message. Please confirm the same on the tool's talk page where you have posted the original message. That will help us make sure that the section was resolved. KCVelaga (talk) 03:54, 18 May 2019 (UTC)

#1Lib1Ref January 2020

The Wikipedia Library – #1Lib1Ref
#1Lib1Ref is happening again from January 15th through February 5th!

From January 15th to February 5th we will be joining together around the world to make Wikipedia more reliable. You can participate in #1Lib1Ref by simply adding a citation to Wikipedia's content!

That's all we ask and imagine: a world in which every librarian (or archivist, reference professional, and scholar) adds 1 more reference to Wikipedia. This is the fifth year of the #1Lib1Ref campaign and we couldn’t be more excited to support another year of activities.

  • If you are planning to host a coffee hour or a edit-a-thon focused on #1Lib1Ref, and you need funding for the event, you will be able to apply for a Rapid Grant. For the best chance of approval, requests should be made in the month of November, since requests related to #1Lib1Ref will be given priority by the Grants team during November.
  • You can make sure your contribution is counted by using the Program and Events Dashboard for your event, institution, or region, and using the #1Lib1Ref hashtag in your edit summary. Login to start a new event or join an existing one for the January campaign.
  • You can join the 1Lib1Ref community via the Wikimedia & Libraries, and 1Lib1Ref mailing lists, or by joining the Wikimedia and Libraries User Group.

Full resources and guides for participating are available on the campaign page.

[WikiConference India 2020] Invitation to participate in the Community Engagement Survey

This is an invitation to participate in the Community Engagement Survey, which is one of the key requirements for drafting the Conference & Event Grant application for WikiConference India 2020 to the Wikimedia Foundation. The survey will have questions regarding a few demographic details, your experience with Wikimedia, challenges and needs, and your expectations for WCI 2020. The responses will help us to form an initial idea of what is expected out of WCI 2020, and draft the grant application accordingly. Please note that this will not directly influence the specificities of the program, there will be a detailed survey to assess the program needs post-funding decision.
