Consultations

[edit]

Hi there,

I just thought I'd introduce myself (I think we may have actually passed each other in the wind before on the strategy bit in meta, but I can't remember any discussions we've had).

Is your role about how the WMF runs consultations with the communities on different areas? I wasn't quite sure as "movement consultations" sounds more like consultations about our general mission as opposed to specific projects/changes, but not sure if that's just a naming bit.

Asaf and Whatamidoing and I have had some good discussions about agreeing what the particularly common flashpoints are and why WMF/community projects seem to snarl up into failure, so explosively, so regularly. Which obviously is not really beneficial to anyone.

Don't want to launch into a summary of that, or questions, or symphony-length summaries of my own viewpoints until I'd checked that has anything to do with your field!

Cheers, Nosebagbear (talk) 16:07, 17 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hello back! I think we're a little familiar, yes, but thank you for reaching out. Your summary hits at the emphasis of my role - helping teams across WMF consult communities (broadly defined) on specific projects/changes. Asaf and WhatamIdoing are great thought partners, and I talk with them and others about many recurring flash points, as well as approaches that do work well that we can build on. Overall, I'll be working on things like coordination support, communications guidance, and sharing best practices. Suffice to say it's a new role and the general focus is internal support, though I'm still scoping out where to focus my time. I'm also trying to attend some of Asaf's Community Clinics - hope to see you there. :) --KStineRowe (WMF) (talk) 16:37, 17 July 2020 (UTC)Reply

Upcoming Wikimedia Café meetup regarding the the 2026-2027 Wikimedia Foundation Annual Plan

[edit]

↠Pine () 03:38, 29 March 2026 (UTC)Reply

Wrongly announced at Wikimedia Café/minutes 2019 09 as Saturday 12 April 2026? What is wrong? Saturday, or 12 April? --Geert Van Pamel (WMBE) 09:02, 30 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
Hi @Geertivp: where did you find a link to Wikimedia Café/minutes 2019 09? That page has archived information. It shouldn't have been linked from any of the recent announcements. ↠Pine () 06:36, 31 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
Sorry, I actually meant this page: Wikimedia Café#April 2026 meeting with a focus on the 2026-2027 Wikimedia Foundation Annual Plan. Thanks to correct the wrong date. Saturday is 11 April; Sunday is 12 April. --Geert Van Pamel (WMBE) 08:27, 31 March 2026 (UTC)Reply
@Geertivp: Now I understand. Sorry for the confusion. The date in most time zones will be 11 April. I'll make a few updates to that page. ↠Pine () 04:56, 1 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Something to consider

[edit]

Hi Kelsi,

Thanks for attending the 11 April 2026 session of the Wikimedia Café. I'm catching up on many Wikimedia issues in my backlog this weekend, including notes from that call.

Regarding the upcoming Event:Global Call: Annual Planning Around the Puzzle Globe, if WMF would like, and I will completely understand if WMF wouldn't for any of several possible good reasons, I would be willing to put the Café "brand" on that and be the facilitator, which hopefully would free some WMF staff capacity to focus more on substance and less on form during that meeting, and also would align with me doing typical announcements of the event as a Café event in advance which could lead to more participation, if WMF thinks this a good idea. I don't wish to have any unwelcome imposition from me personally or the Café "brand" on what WMF wants to accomplish in that meeting or how WMF wants to run it. I'm merely making an offer in case WMF thinks this offer would be helpful.

If there is a separate May session of the Café then it probably will focus on the Annual Plan in further iterations of the Plan's development, although that Café session can be a separate event that goes into more depth and runs longer than the 1-hour WMF-planned global call. Given that staff participated in the April session which discussed the Annual Plan, I don't expect any staff to spend their time in such a separate call in May, although staff are welcome if they'd like to attend.

Please let me know your preference. I hope that you're having a nice weekend.

Thanks,

↠Pine () 05:23, 19 April 2026 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the offer, but we've got facilitation and branding covered. I'll upload the Commons slides when they're ready. Some recent Diff posts relevant to our conversation include https://diff.wikimedia.org/2025/10/17/new-user-trends-on-wikipedia/ and https://diff.wikimedia.org/2025/04/01/how-crawlers-impact-the-operations-of-the-wikimedia-projects/. KStineRowe (WMF) (talk) 17:56, 21 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
  • Hi Kelsi, is there an update regarding the slides? Also, now that the Annual Plan has more substance, is there a Wikimedia Café-style meeting that you and other WMF teammates would find helpful for later in May or in June? Ideally, a Café meeting in May or June regarding the Annual Plan would be helpful to WMF. I'm thinking that I'd offer a 2-hour session that starts on a Saturday morning (8 AM PT / 11 AM ET), and another 2-hour session that starts approximately 13 hours later for people who are in different time zones and/or have reasons for not attending the earlier session such as work or religious considerations. I'm not necessarily asking WMF to send any representatives to such meetings, and I don't want to have "meetings for the sake of meetings", but this is my current concept of what might be useful from me for Café sessions allowing folks to discuss the more-developed Annual Plan. Thanks, ↠Pine () 05:54, 8 May 2026 (UTC)Reply
Hello Pine, Manar has replied to you about a next Wikimedia Café meeting and has linked to the deck on Commons (the same one from the global call) on the annual plan talk page. KStineRowe (WMF) (talk) 12:29, 13 May 2026 (UTC)Reply

Request for slide deck & readership stats

[edit]

Hi Kelsi, in Wikimedia Café/Reports/Meeting notes for 2026 04 would you please add a Commons link or thumbnail of the slide deck that you shared? Also, I don't see a recent Diff post regarding readership stats, and I'd appreciate a link to it if you have one, or an update regarding when the post will happen. ↠Pine () 02:58, 20 April 2026 (UTC)Reply
