Growth team updates #3

Welcome to the third newsletter for the new Growth team!

The Growth team's objective is to work on software changes that help retain new contributors in mid-size Wikimedia projects.

Two Growth team projects to be deployed in next two weeks

We will be deploying the "Understanding first day" and "Personalized first day" projects on Czech and Korean Wikipedias in the coming weeks. See the new project pages below for full details on the projects, and our project updates page for their progress.

  • Understanding first day: learn about the actions new editors take right after creating their accounts. We will be careful with user privacy, and we hope to share initial results in December.
  • Personalized first day: learn about new editors' objectives by adding some optional questions to the new editor’s registration process, and personalizing their onboarding. We hope to share initial results in December.

Third Growth team project begins

  • Focus on help desk: direct newcomers to the local help desks where they can ask questions to help them make their first edits. We hope to have an initial experiment running in December.

Best practices for helping newcomers

We are going to direct newcomers to help desks. But what's the best way to reply to a newcomer there? We have gathered some best practices for successful interactions, based on community experiences and some external documentation. The page has also been reviewed by some experienced community members who suggested some changes. That page is now open for translations. Comments and suggestions are still welcome!

We are still looking for volunteers

Do you want to participate to our experiments? We are looking for new communities to work with us (especially a new mid-size wiki), and people to become ambassadors to help us to communicate with the different communities. Discover how you can involve yourself or your community.

Also, please share this update with your community and interested people!

You can visit our team page to find out why our team was formed and how we are thinking about new editors, and our project page for detailed updates on the projects we'll work on.

Tarawa...

Through the back door

Regarding to this action here, I wanted to inform, that the requesting user is blocked for one year doe to his permanent actions against German administrators in this way, like he has done it here again through the back door, see this user blocking procedure. This is a clear cheating of his block in the German Wikipedia and should have administrative consequences here. PS: See also this discussion on the German administrator's notice board. Regards, Uwe Martens (talk) 20:18, 23 November 2018 (UTC)

Dschungelfan has done nothing wrong. Nobody agreed with Uwe Martens in de:Wikipedia:Administratoren/Notizen#Durch die Hintertür. The "discussion" was closed in less than an hour. Regards, --Parvolus (talk) 20:52, 23 November 2018 (UTC)
This is just your opinion and the opinion of another user. The user blocking procedure had hundreds of users! See also this discussion (permanent link). But anyway, we need a German speaking admin here. -- Uwe Martens (talk) 21:08, 23 November 2018 (UTC)
Uwe Martens, you better make a difference between de and m. You've already been told. Regards, --Parvolus (talk) 21:24, 23 November 2018 (UTC)
Done: Global ban of user:Dschungelfan. -- Uwe Martens (talk) 21:39, 23 November 2018 (UTC)

┌─────────────┘
Good morning. I was not aware of the local restrictions Dschungelfan had on the German Wikipedia. Before processing the request I tried to verify that there was no obstacles and thus verified that there was indeed a reconfirmation page closed by a local bureaucrat (permanent link) when the quorum was reached as declared by local bureaucrat Itti On the 20th October. I also verified the user was informed by said bureaucrat on her talk page on the 20th October about the result of the Adminwiederwahl giving her a month to start a new AK should she wanted to. In this diff, Kriztolina acknowledges receipt of the message and replies that she's not sure and that she'll probably wait till the very end to decide what to do (if I understood correctly). The request for desysop was placed on 19 November, and Kriztolina was desysoped by me on 20 November, exactly a month before. If the desysop was wrongly done, despite my efforts to verify that all was good to proceed, please accept my apologies. If the problem is with who requested the desysop, I thank you for letting me know and we will evaluate whether we can continue to process requests comming from him. Best regards, —MarcoAurelio (talk) 11:21, 24 November 2018 (UTC)
