Stuff you deleted

Hi, I realized that some of the files you deleted are not on commons, such as c:File:Wiki-logo-big-nl.png, c:File:Wikimania-web-alt-en.png and more. Minorax (talk) 12:44, 19 February 2020 (UTC)

Hi, actually, they're all somewhere at commons, just not necessarily share the name. I've created Commons redirects where the file was used, and ignored cases where the files isn't used anywhere. --Martin Urbanec (talk) 13:05, 19 February 2020 (UTC)

Flood flag isn't working

Not sure what's causing it, but your blocks are showing up in the recent changes. --Yair rand (talk) 23:39, 19 March 2020 (UTC)

Just noticed (and fixed). Cause was that my OAuth grant I was using to authorize the script doing the blocks for me wasn't allowed enough permissions for the bot right to properly work. --Martin Urbanec (talk) 23:42, 19 March 2020 (UTC)

Requesting kind assistance on SRG

Dear Mr Urbanec,

I request your kind assistance and stewardship to deal with vandal. Request link is here: SRG request.

There are two en wiki CheckUsers (@TonyBallioni and Materialscientist:) are familiar with the problem IP editor. Also, there is at least one admin on wikiq (@GreenMeansGo:) familiar with vandal history.

In San Francisco Bay Area, schools shut down due to COVID19 and is now lockdown. Therefore, childish vandalism is becoming increased by the problem editor. Again, I very much appreciate your assistance.

Global Blocking

In one of these days my user account (Krzysztof 13) has been suddenly blocked by you for 1 year. May I know the reason why? I cannot edit and I cannot discuss with polish admins to ask them for explanation and help. Krzysztof 13 (talk) 13:46, 21 March 2020 (UTC)

@Krzysztof 13: Hello, to help you understand the reason behind the global block, I would need to know the complere block notice. You can post it either here, or, if you prefer it to stay confidential, you can email stewards@wikimedia.org. Best, --Martin Urbanec (talk) 13:50, 21 March 2020 (UTC)

Here is the block notice:

Your IP address is in a range that has been blocked on all Wikimedia Foundation wikis.

The block was made by Martin Urbanec (meta.wikimedia.org). The reason given is Open proxy: email stewards@wikimedia.org should you be affected .

   Start of block: 00:39, 19 mar 2020
   Expiry of block: 00:39, 19 mar 2021

Your current IP address is 46.246.105.23 and the blocked range is 46.246.64.0/18. Please include all above details in any queries you make.

If you believe you were blocked by mistake, you can find additional information and instructions in the No open proxies global policy. Otherwise, to discuss the block please post a request for review on Meta-Wiki or send an email to the stewards OTRS queue at stewards@wikimedia.org including all above details.

Thanks for your message, Krzysztof 13. This block was made, because it is deemed to be used by open proxy or VPN providers. The block was not directed at you personally. VPNs are frequently abused to bypass our antiabuse mechanisms, and as such, are blocked. See also global policy on open proxies. However, I see that there is a wider global block, which is for anonymous users only. For this reason, I've removed my smaller block. You should now be able to edit. Please note that it is possible the VPN you use will be blocked by another steward. If you do not need to edit through a VPN, the simplest solution would be to just turn it off/exempt Wikipedia. Best, --Martin Urbanec (talk) 14:02, 21 March 2020 (UTC)

  • Thanks for explanation! Now I see. Lately I have started to use VPN mode in my Firefox browser. I dont't know why. I didn't know this would cause the problem. Now I going to cancel this mode and I hope this solve the problem. Krzysztof 13 (talk) 14:51, 21 March 2020 (UTC)

I'm happy to hear that! Let us know if I can do anything else to help you. Best, --Martin Urbanec (talk) 15:26, 21 March 2020 (UTC)

  • Hi!
The problem is not resolvet yet. I turned off VPN mode in my Windows 10. As I see now this was surely the reason to block my IP-adress. It is not my fault any way. I think I turned VPN mode on by mistake or it was turned on as default. I don't remember now. Unfortunately my IP-adress is still being blocked. All I want from you is to unblock my IP-adress. I await further instructions from you if you need them to unblock me. I'm many years' Wikipedia user. Krzysztof 13 (talk) 15:50, 21 March 2020 (UTC)
@Krzysztof 13: That's interesting. Is the error message still the same? --Martin Urbanec (talk) 16:00, 21 March 2020 (UTC)
@Martin Urbanec: I'm going to restart my PC and I will se then what happened. I'll inform you anyway. Before I was using Windows 7 (more than 10 years) withount any problems. Krzysztof 13 (talk) 16:13, 21 March 2020 (UTC)
Thanks. I see you're long term plwiki user. Let's not overcomplicate this. I've exempted your user account from global blocks. --Martin Urbanec (talk) 16:19, 21 March 2020 (UTC)

Global blocking

Dear Martin Urbanec,

the IP address I use (164.132.48.123) as blocked for one year because it is included in a blocked range: 164.132.0.0/16. The reason was "No open proxy". My IP address is not an open proxy. I believe some other addresses in the blocked range behaved badly. Would it be possible for you to do something to unblock ?

Thank you very much, best regards,

Apameia (talk) 15:21, 21 March 2020 (UTC)

The message I received was the following:

Your IP address is in a range that has been blocked on all Wikimedia Foundation wikis. The block was made by Martin Urbanec (meta.wikimedia.org). The reason given is Open proxy: email stewards@wikimedia.org should you be affected. * Start of block: 18 mars 2020 à 23:36 * Expiry of block: 18 mars 2021 à 23:36 Your current IP address is 164.132.48.123 and the blocked range is 164.132.0.0/16.

@Apameia: Hello Apameia, this IP address, 164.132.48.123, is assigned to OVH, a French hosting company. Under Wikimedia policies, hosting providers are blocked as open proxies, because anyone can hire their services and route traffic through them. Is it possible you use a VPN, or you route your traffic through your own server? Best, --Martin Urbanec (talk) 15:25, 21 March 2020 (UTC)
@Martin Urbanec: Hello Martin. Thank you for your explanation, now I understand. I have a server at this address. I do not use any VPN nor do I route traffic through this IP. All my manual edits are done directly from my latptop. I use the blocked IP only to launch bot tasks. I have currently a bot (Apameiabot on Greek Wikisource) in test phase. What would be the solution ?
Thank you, Apameia (talk) 15:36, 21 March 2020 (UTC)
@Apameia: I understand. You can ask any of the Greek Wikisource administrators to grant you IP block exemption. This could keep your bot away from the block. Best, --Martin Urbanec (talk) 15:48, 21 March 2020 (UTC)
@Martin Urbanec: OK, I will ask them. If I understand, I should do this request for every new wiki where this bot could be used. I have another question: are there Wikimedia servers where users can host their bots ? Thanks, Apameia (talk) 16:02, 21 March 2020 (UTC)
@Apameia: For now, yes. If your bot is estabilished at multiple wikis, it can be eglible for a global exemption, which can be requested at Meta. Alternatively, if your server has a single IP address, I can set it to block only anonymous contribs, while still permitting your logged-in bot to make its actions. And yes, there are Wikimedia servers for bots and many other things. It's called Wikimedia Toolforge, and you can read more details about this project at Wikitech. --Martin Urbanec (talk) 16:08, 21 March 2020 (UTC)

User Name Conniff

Hi Martin,

You moved a user's name this morning : here.

The problem is : this new username Joseph Raymond Conniff is the name of a real person : en:Ray Conniff (although dead).

And this user is trying to edit the french article about fr:Ray Conniff, but his edits are so inconsistent that we had to stop him.

Is this new username acceptable ? Many thanks in advance. --——d—n—f (talk) 19:48, 22 March 2020 (UTC)

Global block/unblock for 62.148.157.220 =

Status:    In progress

Hello, Martin Urbanec. Please, unblock my IP. I did not change my IP for open proxy. It has been probably done by my provider, not by me. --Psychiatrick (talk) 17:42, 20 April 2020 (UTC)

@Psychiatrick: Hi, this IP was not blocked for being an open proxy, but for long term abuse. If you share that IP, the best thing to do is to email stewards@wikimedia.org. However, given you're globally blocked in ruwiki, it's unlikely you'd be granted the global exemption. You can still apply for the local one, see w:WP:IPBE. Hope this helps. --Martin Urbanec (talk) 09:10, 22 April 2020 (UTC)

Incorrect block over the "2001:41D0:0:0:0:0:0:0/32" range

Hello,

Just for your information, I have noticed that you have blocked an IP address range belonging to OVH Telecom (https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sp%C3%A9cial:Contributions/2001:41D0:FE8E:2D00:D930:3CCC:36A0:38D4).

OVH Telecom is a subsidiary of the main OVH (aka OVHCloud) company, that does not provide hosting services but rather specifically provides general DSL broadband services (https://www.ovhtelecom.fr/).

The whois record is rather clear about this:

netname: OVH-DSL
descr: OVH Telecom

Is is rather understandable that OVH hosting-related ranges are blocked, but OVH Telecom ranges should likely not.

I am not personally a subscriber of OVH Telecom, this if for notification as it may block legitimate users.

Regards, --Gros chat violet (talk) 21:44, 21 April 2020 (UTC)

@Gros chat violet: Hi, thanks for the message. This range sadly seems to be mixed up. For instance, the IP you linked is indeed OVH Telecom, but `2001:41D0:8:E27D:0:0:0:1`, nominally being in the same range, seems to be OVHCloud one. If you see Special:Contributions/2001:41D0:0:0:0:0:0:0/32, you'll notice the range was abused a lot. If you have a way to filter OVH Telecom IPs, I'll be happy to hear that. --Martin Urbanec (talk) 09:08, 22 April 2020 (UTC)
Hello,
It seems that both subsidiaries route their traffic through different networks: OVH Telecom routes traffic through AS35540 and OVHCloud routes traffic through AS16276. This is also confirmed here.
As you can see on the HE.net links, the only IPv6 range of OVH Telecom seems to be 2001:41d0:fc00::/38, while OVHCloud has multiple ranges, including the rest of the whole 2001:41d0::/32. Maybe it could be relevant to block all of the OVHCloud range except the OVH Telecom range, if your steward tools allow you to do this?
Regards, --Gros chat violet (talk) 13:33, 22 April 2020 (UTC)
@Gros chat violet: Thanks for the info. Sadly, it's not that easy - I can't exempt an IP or a range, rather, I need to block all other ranges. I've looked into what ranges belong directly to AS16276, and blocked them, and unblocked the big /32 range. Is that fine with you? --Martin Urbanec (talk) 13:57, 22 April 2020 (UTC)
Hello.
I have tried to reply but the AbuseFilter won't let me do ("Error: This action has been automatically identified as harmful, and therefore disallowed. If you believe your action was constructive, please inform an administrator of what you were trying to do. A brief description of the abuse rule which your action matched is: Antivandalism (local)").

Regards, --Gros chat violet (talk) 15:32, 22 April 2020 (UTC)
@Gros chat violet: Sorry, I just got to your message. Thanks for the script. However, I think I already did something of similar effect (unblocking the large /32 range, and blocking all ranges that are explicitly in AS16276, OVHCloud's ASN?). If there is anything I missed, please do let me know. --Martin Urbanec (talk) 12:43, 26 April 2020 (UTC)

CN banner stats

Hi Martin,

For our evaluation, I would be curious about the stats for our Techstorm 2019 banner. Can I see them somewhere maybe? Ciell (talk) 15:58, 27 April 2020 (UTC)

@Ciell: Hi Ciell, thanks for reaching out! If you turn on Banner history logger, the data would be actually sent to the server. However, they're not user-available, as they contain the actual selection criteria (country, project, user logged in status etc.) and other personal data. If you create a Phabricator task, someone might dig into the data for you - but I'm really not sure about that Face-smile.svg. Another option would be to use something like shortener.wikimedia.nl/blablabla to redirect user to your landing page, and see the banner-caused pageviews that way. Hope that helps! --Martin Urbanec (talk) 18:03, 27 April 2020 (UTC)

Global block of 39.114.168.164

Hello Martin, thanks for globally blocking 39.114.168.164. I see you blocked it for 3 years. I would suggest shortening the block to ~3 months (same length as the original en.wiki block). Most proxies running OpenVPN die within 3 months, and the few that remain open can always be reblocked afterwards. --MrClog (talk) 20:33, 29 April 2020 (UTC)

The global block for the T-Mobile IP address range is completely unnecessary.

Hello Martin, would a steward please discuss this kind of issue? This IP address was globally blocked (again) for three months. Nope, this block is completely unnecessary, and also, there's too many collateral damage caused by this block. However, I have a better idea if you don't unblock, just extend the global block to at least one year. 126.24.177.199 21:33, 29 April 2020 (UTC)

China block

Hello Martin, this is ken2011shibuya. I have been prevented to edit wikipedia pages for one year because I use a proxy. I am in China at this time and for a while, and the only way to access wikipedia in China is to use a VPN. I would like to edit some pages while I am in China. Could you kindly remove the prohibition? Thank you. ken2011shibuya —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 09:46, 2 May 2020 (talk)

@Ken2011shibuya: Hey, not sure which Wikipedia version this is about. You have most edits at the English version, and given most VPNs are also locally blocked at enwiki, you'd probably need local exemption anyway. I recommend contacting checkuser-en-ep@wikipedia.org. Sysop rights to User:Tiven2240 and Analysis of the Community Poll here

  • I am trying to understand that, are we trying to promote meat-puppetry here? And what I am missing while looking at these facts. Which I have posted even in CU request regarding the same.
  • These three came all the way to mrwikisource only to vote on the poll, I don't know what is the other way than someone really pinging them to do so.
    • s:mr:Sandesh9822 = 11 edits on the project and blocked on 4 projects for several reasons including socking (No recent active contributions other than voting on this poll)
    • s:mr:अभय_नातू = 11 edits on the project and Absolutely no edit after voting on the poll.(No recent active contributions other than voting on this poll)
    • s:mr:प्रसाद_साळवे = 40 edits on the project and Absolutely no edit after voting on the poll.(No recent active contributions other than voting on this poll)
  • These accounts were involved in WAM2019 and now here. (All of these edits on OCR's of books uploaded by Tiven themselves!)
    • s:mr:Fabian1117 = 1287 edits on the project and involved with Tiven2240 on mrwiki, Tiven had awarded them 3rd rank in WAM2019 on mrwiki as
    • s:mr:Crispin100 = 88 edits on the project and involved with Tiven2240 on mrwiki, Tiven had awarded them 3rd rank in WAM2019 on mrwiki as per their userpage.
  • All of these four accounts were created after the poll started and they have no edits on any other projects Which means they were created to vote on the poll only. Even on mrwikisource they have less than 50 edits. (All of these edits on OCR's of books uploaded by Tiven themselves!)
    • s:mr:Virajpatil786 = 32 edits on the project and Absolutely no edit after voting on the poll.
    • s:mr:Sugarpie18 = 38 edits on the project and Absolutely no edit after voting on the poll.
    • s:mr:Akashsalla14 = 50 edits on the project and inactive after voting on the poll.
    • s:mr:Bikelover982 = 49 edits on the project and inactive after voting on the poll.
  • Additionally oppose votes from 2 active, out of which I have 1500+ edits at that time and s:mr:User:Svnavare 4000+ edits on the project.
  • I am not able to understand how it's not a canvassed/managed voting poll! and if this is how we are granting sysop permissions then we are definitely encouraging meat puppetry. QueerEcofeminist "cite! even if you fight"!!! [they/them/their] 06:29, 2 June 2020 (UTC)

The block was made, because the IP addresss you seem to use isn't used by residential customers, but for other purposes. This can be abused to bypass our antiabuse mechanisms, and for such reason, all edits from those addresses are blocked by default. You can read more at https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/No_open_proxies.

This frequently happens because you use a VPN or a similar service. If that is the case, please disable the VPN service. After you do so, you may need to clear your browser cookies for the change to get fully in effect. Best, --Martin Urbanec (talk) 11:23, 20 June 2020 (UTC)

Help with WPWP Campaign Central Notice

Hello Martin,

I hope you are fine. Please we need your help with central notice. We already submitted a requested. Our central notice texts in multiple languages are here but it looks like we need to add the translated texts via here. We will appreciate your help, Martin. Thank you. T CellsTalk 13:03, 20 June 2020 (UTC)

Hello there, I've drafted the banner at [1]. You would need to import the translations through the Help with translations link, then we can continue in setting the campaign up. Thanks for your work, --Martin Urbanec (talk) 14:01, 20 June 2020 (UTC)
Wow! Thanks for your help. Please how do I import the translations through the Help with translations link? Thank you. T CellsTalk 14:29, 20 June 2020 (UTC)
At the translations link, you need to pick a language at the right side ("Translate to English", you can click English [or whatever language it has for you] and pick the target language, and add a translation then). If you have any other issues with this, let me know. --Martin Urbanec (talk) 14:35, 20 June 2020 (UTC)
This is really helpful, Martin. I'd let you known if I encounter any difficulty. Thank you so much. T CellsTalk 15:21, 20 June 2020 (UTC)

Global AbuseFilter

Hi there! I was wondered about this tool. Do this tool also able to block someone from doing any actions in Wikimedia project? There's a case in mswikipedia and Malaysia, I don't know how but I think this tool is over response and block in wide range. Most of ip address in Malaysia was blocked and I think it's the filter that block the main ip address that caused the sub-ip address being blocked too. Can it be turn off or slow down it's response? This blocking has affected many person and turn down participation in Wiki Loves Earth in Malaysia. We've received few reports about this inability to upload in Commons because they're unable to sign up for an account to upload their works. Hoping for ASAP response. Thank you. CyberTroopers (talk) 16:02, 20 June 2020 (UTC)

@CyberTroopers: Hey, are you saying some global abusefilter prevents your students from doing their work? If so, could you please send me to Special:AbuseLog protocols, so I can review the filter, trim it and/or disable it for your wiki? Thanks, --Martin Urbanec (talk) 13:12, 23 June 2020 (UTC)

Heads up

I have begun to review some of the IP blocks at NV.

You know... youʼre only the second person EVER to acknowledge the work I and others have done on nv. Usually, white people just show up to complain and to tell me (and the others whoʼve left by now) what dumb fuckcin' pieces of shit we are.

Maybe thatʼd be something else to consider when talking about "harming the project". Seb az86556 (talk) 13:18, 23 June 2020 (UTC)

Local case

Hello martin urbanec, I have doubt about local wiki case, what a minimum criteria should it handled on meta wiki? How about a local case can effect to be global? Thanks martin ☺ Syman51 19:25, 1 July 2020 (UTC)

@Syman51: Hello, local cases are usually not handled at meta wiki. Neither Meta Wiki nor the stewards serve as a superior authority to local wiki bodies ~ each wiki is self-governing, and is independent. In case of suspected abuse of advanced rights that can't be revoked locally (sysop, bureaucrat), please email us at stewards@wikimedia.org. --Martin Urbanec (talk) 15:18, 4 July 2020 (UTC)

IP block

Hi Martin,

I am a sysop on French-wiki. Yesterday you blocked an IP for a VPS purpose. Its user is fr:User:Edouard2, an experienced contributor on fr-Wiki who devotes himself to the Hundred Years' War and has nothing to do with vandalism. Since, he can't connect from his home computer.

Can you please double-check ?

Regards, JohnNewton8 (talk) 09:14, 3 July 2020 (UTC)

Hey, thanks for writing to me! The IP seems to be a part of a VPN provider, rather than a residential IP address. Could you check with the user about that? Best, --Martin Urbanec (talk) 14:51, 3 July 2020 (UTC)

Quick question about cross-wiki spam

Hi! noticed you're a cross-wiki patroller, so I wanted to reach out as I'm not sure what's the best course of action for a cross-wiki spam. This article was recently deleted on EN. However, it looks like it's now being re-created across many wiki projects by this user. It was created on AR, FR, ID, JA, KO, MS, and many others. I'm not sure where to lodge the report, but I hope you can help look into it or point me towards the right direction? — Infogapp1 (talk) 00:06, 18 July 2020 (UTC)

UPDATE: I've just added it in Steward requests/Global. It's my first time doing this report, so I hope I did it in the right channel and accurately. — Infogapp1 (talk) 00:46, 18 July 2020 (UTC)
@Infogapp1: Hello, thanks for letting me know! I have locked the account you've reported. Regarding best course of action, usuaully, we look for the articles the user created (if they connect it to a WD item, it's relatively easy, otherwise, consult global account info or http://xtools.wmflabs.org/globalcontribs), nominate it for deletion everywhere ({{speedy}} or {{delete}} works at most of the wikis) and report to SRG for a lock, so the user cannot continue to be disruptive. If the wiki has no or very few local admins, Global sysops/Requests is also an useful page. I see that was now done, so there is probably nothing else to do. If I missed anything, let me know :-). Best, --Martin Urbanec (talk) 08:20, 20 July 2020 (UTC)
Thank you so much for your guidance. These are helpful for similar cases in the future. Btw: do you know where I can find an archive of any deleted Wikidata/Wikipedia entries at all? Just wanted the diff links for a potential COI case I am following, but since the entries have been edited, I couldn't find the edits links anymore. — Infogapp1 (talk) 22:30, 20 July 2020 (UTC)
I think I found my answer...so if I were to build a case about a potential COI and add diff links, I understand clerks can't see it, but Admins can see those links that were previously available (but now deleted) right? — Infogapp1 (talk) 22:32, 20 July 2020 (UTC)

Hello. Do you see a logo on hu.wikiquote? I see none, and I think I saw one in the past. Thanks! —MarcoAurelio (talk) 13:22, 29 July 2020 (UTC)

Hello MarcoAurelio, yes, I do. Can you reproduce the bug with ?safemode=1? Thanks, --Martin Urbanec (talk) 13:28, 29 July 2020 (UTC)
With safemode I do indeed see the logo. The only changes to my JS that I recently did was this one which shouldn't impact logo display. So far I have not encountered "logoless" wikis but that one. —MarcoAurelio (talk) 13:30, 29 July 2020 (UTC)
I searched for logo related code in hu.wikiquote, and I found https://hu.wikiquote.org/w/index.php?title=MediaWiki:Monobook.css&diff=51350&oldid=38305. Did that help? --Martin Urbanec (talk) 13:38, 29 July 2020 (UTC)

Infinite IP blocks?

Hi. Noticed that you have some infinite IP blocks. Was this purposeful or just artefact of actions?  — billinghurst sDrewth 02:01, 11 August 2020 (UTC)

@Billinghurst Hello, I've copied global open proxy blocks to Meta, as open proxies are often abuse at meta too. When I ran that script, I noticed there are some global indefinite blocks, which I did not want to copy, so I've exempted from the script. However, I did not release indef blocks placed previously. Martin Urbanec (talk) 15:35, 12 August 2020 (UTC)
We haven't been placing indef IP blocks at meta for while, which was a decision propagating down from the stewards determining to stop doing indef IP blocks.  — billinghurst sDrewth 15:38, 12 August 2020 (UTC)
Removed both global and locak indef blocks from this list. --Martin Urbanec (talk) 10:46, 15 August 2020 (UTC)

By the way, is the test process automated? Because it seems like jenkinsbot still haven't verified my commit, and there seems to be no test results at all. How do I start the test process?--evrifaessa ❯❯❯ talk 14:41, 16 August 2020 (UTC)
@Evrifaessa Hello, thanks for reaching to me! For security reasons, the testing process runs automatically only for users who are at an allowlist. Once you have few merged commits, I or someone else can add you to the allowlist, and jenkins bot will run automatically for your patches as well.
Regarding getting it merged/deployed to production, you need to schedule it for a deployment. You can do that by going to https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/Deployments, logging it with your Wikitech/developer account, and adding your patch to any of the backport window. During the window you picked, you need to available in #wikimedia-operations IRC channel. A deployer will then review the patch, ask you to test it, and if it works, it will be deployed to production.
If you have any questions, please let me know, and thank you for uploading the patch! Martin Urbanec (talk) 14:47, 16 August 2020 (UTC)

Locked IP

Yesterday i was editing in IT Wiki and today you block my IP (2.58.194.143) with NO REASONS... I don't use proxy and VPN so why u blocked me?? -Luckyblue87 (talk) 16:00, 7 October 2020 (UTC)

@Luckyblue87 This IP address is assigned to a hosting provider, and it is not a residential IP address. That means you use an open proxy or a VPN, either intentionally, or unintentionally. Please check your computer configuration, and check it for malware. Martin Urbanec (talk) 17:05, 7 October 2020 (UTC)

Speedy deletion data of global sysops wikis

Hi Martin. I hope you are good. The some small wikis (tr.wikibooks and tr.wikisource) are missing from this list. Also tr.wikimedia is an user group wiki, tr.wikinews is a closed wiki, I guess they don't need to be added to this list. Could you consider adding these two wikis (books and source) to list? --Uncitoyentalk 10:18, 2 October 2020 (UTC)

@Uncitoyen Hello, there are all wikis that have their speedy deletion category attached to Q5964. Just add the category there, and the bot will update it. I don't think that closed wikis or chapter wikis need to be removed, after all, https://ca.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:Log/delete has a lot of global sysop/steward activity :-). Best, Martin Urbanec (talk) 10:24, 3 October 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for your explanations. But there is a problem. I couldn't add the related pages to the related wikidata item. Because they have been added on other wikidata items. If there are other wikis that aren't visible on this list, maybe that's why they aren't visible. --Uncitoyentalk 20:20, 3 October 2020 (UTC)
@Uncitoyen: Well, either the two items are a duplicate (and should be merged), or there is a reason why they're separate. I don't edit the other wikis, so I can't help on that. Best, --Martin Urbanec (talk) 17:06, 7 October 2020 (UTC)
They seem to be attached to Q8855935, Q4615845. These lists have a speedy deletion category of different wikis. --Uncitoyentalk 19:03, 7 October 2020 (UTC)

logo problem

Hi Urbanec, Months ago you resolved this task (see T255328#6349325 why i created that task) . However i am still seeing old logo.

After seeing the log, i believed your Synchronization of bnwiki's logo got rolled back (same thing with static/images/project-logos/bnwiki-1.5x.png & static/images/project-logos/bnwiki.png). I think user:gilles used the 4 months old logo instead of 9 weeks old logo. Could you please take a look. --আফতাবুজ্জামান (talk) 02:06, 13 October 2020 (UTC)

Hello GZWDer. The bot seems to be a read-only bot, so it doesn't actually edit. It seems the Foundation was involved with the approval, so I'd suggest asking there. JSutherland (WMF), do you have any idea about this? Best, --Martin Urbanec (talk) 19:53, 13 October 2020 (UTC)

I want to translate WAM CentralNotice

When I saw Patriccck create the CentralNotice request of WAM on Czech Wikipedia, I think maybe we can translate it, and target more language Wikipedia (like Wiki Loves Monuments). But I don't known how to start....I ask Patriccck, he said you can help. Could you tell me how to do? --KOKUYO (talk) 20:55, 20 October 2020 (UTC)

@KOKUYO: Hello! I decided to use a sui generis banner for Czech Wikipedia, because maybe the text for other sites will be different, and as such, not a translation. If you want to get a banner for your wiki too, I recommend to fill another banner request :). Best, --Martin Urbanec (talk) 21:38, 20 October 2020 (UTC)
Becacuse I work for WAM International Team (i.e. sand MassMessage), I hope to get a banner for participating Wikipedia communities one time (not only for one language). Would it be all right to do this?--KOKUYO (talk) 21:46, 20 October 2020 (UTC)
Yes, it would be possible to fill one request for all wikis - however, you'd need to send a link to the request to all the wikis (via massmessage, for instance), so they can object to the banner if they disagree with it being displayed. You also need to provide a list of wikis participating in WAM (so it's not displayed at uninvolved wikis, etc.). Does it make sense to you, KOKUYO? Best, --Martin Urbanec (talk) 07:35, 21 October 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for your description. But I have another question....I hope to the banner have different language text in different Wikipedia. How to invite other people translate English text to their language, and let you know their relation of text and site (i.e. English text--->Chinese, French, etc.--->Chinese text for Chinese Wikipedia, French text for French Wikipedia)? I known WLM have this. Do I have to make same table for different language text on different Wikipedia?--KOKUYO (talk) 08:03, 21 October 2020 (UTC)
@KOKUYO Maybe you could request local organizers to translate banner into their languages (for expample using ping them). Patriccck (talk) 09:01, 21 October 2020 (UTC)
And I have got one note: "Requests must be made, at minimum, 10 days in advance of any campaign". Patriccck (talk) 09:03, 21 October 2020 (UTC)
@KOKUYO The best approach that is the easiest for central notice administrators is to request a banner with only English text specified, and state that it should be translatable. A CN administrator will then send you a link to the translation interface, and ask you to get the banner translated there. You can either copy-paste translations from elsewhere, or distribute the link to all translators. Once it's translated, the CN admin needs to be pinged, so they can set the banner, and approve translations. Does it make sense? Martin Urbanec (talk) 09:53, 21 October 2020 (UTC)

Hi. Will you please block 120.188.0.0/17 (talk · contribs), 114.5.0.0/17 (talk · contribs), and 114.4.0.0/16 (talk · contribs) since IPs on those ranges have been persistently harassing and vandalizing pages I edited and my talk pages for months. Not only in enwiki but also across several wikis like idwiki and commonswiki. the first (120.188.0.0/17 (talk · contribs)) and both the latter are now blocked on enwiki only for some time so he moved to commons. Edit-a-thon WAM

Could you make an edit here? On the last page of the "Jury", you can add this name "Athena in Wonderland". Missed that name, could you help me? Juan90264 (talk) 21:59, 31 October 2020 (UTC)

Would you like to do the editing above? I only asked you, because you are a translation administrator, who allows access to edit edit-a-thons in the Foundain Tool; and I need you to edit this edit-a-thon, because I ended up forgetting to add another organizer of Mês Asiático da Wikipédia 2020 (Wikipedia Asian Month 2020). Special:AbuseFilter/267

Do you really think that this is an acceptable filter? Something that can be universally (wrt meta) be implemented? I haven't seen the consensus for it.  — billinghurst sDrewth 22:39, 31 October 2020 (UTC)

@Billinghurst Hello, as you can see, the filter is called "Emergency shutoff" – it was a helpless emergency action to stop the Turkish LTA. In my opinion, consensus can never be required for an emergency action - simple because it probably wouldn't be useful once the consensus was (not) gained. The Turkish LTA was switching to a different range once I blocked his current one. According to my previous experiences with this LTA, he would change texts used after a filter focusing on his texts would be implemented.
Although this filter is a quite extreme measure, it stopped him without investing a sysop time any more.
I just disabled the filter, as it's probably not needed anymore. I admit I should've disabled this filter earlier, and I apologize for this.
Does it make sense, Billinghurst? Martin Urbanec (talk) 22:53, 31 October 2020 (UTC)
Whether it is an emergency or not, the introduction of such filters should have community consensus, and not be a unilateral decision; the circumstances and processes for its implementation can then be formed. We have operated for many years without that necessity, so I don't see that approach reasonable or necessary as a unilateral action. Was the editing truly that damaging? I see no reference anywhere in the forums that I use to see it addressed as an issue to the community. This is a community space with a team of administrators, please utilise the team.  — billinghurst sDrewth 23:04, 31 October 2020 (UTC)
@Billinghurst: I was following it on #wikimedia-stewards on IRC, and this was a very clear emergency where such an action was warranted. Multiple blocks were placed, with no reduction in vandalism being seen, nor an end could be predicted. This filter, even if extreme, had the intended effect of keeping the vandal out. Maybe Martin disabled it too late, which he himself admitted, but it was definitely warranted in this case. Best, —Thanks for the fish! talkcontribs 01:15, 1 November 2020 (UTC)
@Tks4Fish: This is setting a precedent of what is a reasonable action. Read the commentary in the filter about the context. Read the commentary in Meta:RfH. Oh one cannot, it isn't there. Administrators do not and should not work in isolation, nor in a vacuum. An admin shouldn't have to guess the context of any filter, nor the implementation of such a draconian action; whether it is temporary, or permanent. If I did it, I would be held accountable, or I hope that I would be.

I would still like to know how was this set of spam and vandalism is worse than others that we have seen? What damage was it doing that it needed this level of response and impact on other anonymous editors. These are not unreasonable questions to be asked and to have answered when precedent setting actions have been taken, and the filter will sit there in perpetuity for actions for all meta administrators.  — billinghurst sDrewth 04:31, 1 November 2020 (UTC)

Do you have evidence of abuse by this user after blocked in English Wikipedia (in 5 December 2019)? I don't think it is a good usecase if there are no new activity.--GZWDer (talk) 10:32, 9 November 2020 (UTC)

For clarifying, if this user have no activity after the sockpuppets are found, I found no evidence that 1. this case can not be adequately handled by local community or 2. there are reasonable grounds to believe the user will further disrupt the site in the near future, so I don't see any grounds for global locks. Without evasion, the blocks in Commons and Wikidata might be removed immediately upon request (none of them are community bans) and once they are removed it is no longer a cross-wiki abuse.--GZWDer (talk) 20:49, 9 November 2020 (UTC)
According to global locks, a global lock may be placed on "Accounts that have violated other principles which are grounds for indefinite blocks on multiple individual wikis". This is a classroom example of such account – it was blocked at literally all projects which they have substantial contributions to - in another words, no project welcomes their contribution.
I don't really want to speculate whether Wikidata and/or Commons are going to remove that block. A global lock doesn't indicate any global ban at all - it can be removed upon request if there's a reason for that (removing a block certainly is such a case, but there's no evidence of that happening).
To answer your question, there is no new direct connection with any accounts – in my eyes, that does not mean the lock is invalid.
Of course, you can ask any steward to re-examine my decision.
Best, Martin Urbanec (talk) 21:13, 9 November 2020 (UTC)
I still oppose to this action - this case is much less serious than the INeverCry one. As long as they are no new disruption, there is no reason to lock it. Anyway I will soon start a discussion (probably about global locks in general) in a community venue.--GZWDer (talk) 21:33, 9 November 2020 (UTC)
To raise another point: it is actually encouraged for a blocked user to contribute to another wiki that the user is not blocked (including those they have no meaningful contribution previously). See w:Wikipedia:Standard_offer#Variations. I don't see why it is not the case. Global lock should only be used if such route is misused (i.e. user continue to disrupt in another wiki after they are blocked in one). In addition, a lock hampers users to appeal locally, eapecially on wikis without off-wiki appeal channel like Commons and Wikidata (EmailUser is still onwiki).--GZWDer (talk) 05:32, 10 November 2020 (UTC)

Persian calendar

Hi there! A new phabricator task will soon come your way from Requests for new languages/Wikipedia Saraiki. Someone (I didn't check who) put "This language has a Persco-Arabic Script and font tahoma. Use Persian calendar instead of Julian/Gregorian." into the "additional settings" part there. I assume the first part is handled automagically anyway, but I wonder about the second. Does MediaWiki support other calendar systems at all? --MF-W 22:52, 15 November 2020 (UTC)

@MF-Warburg Hello, good question! I checked MessagesFa.php, and it says persian under datePreferences. However, I don't know whether that affects default or not. Maybe @Ladsgroup would know? Best, Martin Urbanec (talk) 23:15, 15 November 2020 (UTC)
@MF-Warburg There is support for Solar Hijri calendar in parser functions mw:Help:Extension:ParserFunctions##time (Look at "Non-Gregorian calendars" in the table) and we extensively use it in Persian Wikipedia pages (like telling users what day it is in both calendars in the main page) but changing calendar of a wiki to anything non-Gregorian is impossible and requires Herculean efforts to implement. Amir (talk) 12:33, 16 November 2020 (UTC)
