Hi Nxx, Japanese and Korean haven't been proven to be related. So here they shouldn't really be grouped together. They _may_ be distantly related, but the evidence is weak. The page you cited ([1]) has some interesting information, but many of their cognate sets are very dubious. Most linguists would not accept them. Many cognate sets have words with very different meanings listed together, and different phonological forms, so they are not reliable at all.

Actually I'm interested in this field, and I've done some research on Japanese and Korean. There is some common basic vocabulary from before Chinese influence began, and very similar grammar. But many basic word groups, like body parts, numbers, kinship terms, etc, are very different. Other vocabulary might have been borrowed in the distant past. More research is needed before anyone can say for sure if they are related.

Anyway, I think Japonic and Korean should be separated here. --Chamdarae 19:27, 8 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry I couldn't get back to you sooner. As far as I know, Meta currently doesn't use bots to automatically update statistics pages; for some pages, like List of Wikipedias, we just have people copy-paste wikicode from an external website when they remember to. I don't think there's a technical reason for it, except that users like to tinker with the structure or wording of the page in question, and that could easily break a script (or the script could override users' edits, which isn't an optimal situation, either). I think that's especially the case with List of Wikipedias by language family, because it seems that many languages have been reshuffled just in the last couple weeks. I know I wouldn't have enough time to update a script every time someone decides to reclassify a language, but if you know someone who would, I'd be happy to help out. – Minh Nguyễn (talk, contribs) 05:11, 26 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
