hello! my IP has been listed as a suspected Open Proxy/Zombie Network, and therefore blacklisted.

Could you please scan my IP to see that it really does belong to a corporate network, and is not open?

213.84.74.36

Hello, I wanted to add a comment to a discussion on a page, and I saw the following message: "This IP address has been blocked because it is believed to be an open proxy or zombie computer. To prevent abuse, editing from these proxies is currently prohibited. For more information about open proxies and what you can do, please see the WikiProject on open proxies." (my IP address is 213.84.74.36) I can say that it is extremely unlikely that either of those is true. On what information is the accusation based? You can contact me at hostmaster AT falu.nl; check the MX for that if you like.) The preceding unsigned comment was added by 213.84.74.36 (talk • contribs) 12:23, 19 March 2006.

The IP address was scanned several months ago and confirmed to be open. It has since been closed, so I unblocked it. Thanks for your contributions to the WikiProject on open proxies. // Pathoschild 19:28, 19 March 2006 (UTC)

Please, check these IPs

None of these seem to be open, although they may be anonymising or HTTP proxies. // Pathoschild (talk) 22:09, 27 March 2006 (UTC)
These proxys are used by http://anonymouse.org/. This type of proxy are allowed? 555 22:12, 27 March 2006 (UTC)
Nope. Please report them at WM:OP with a note that they belong to anonymouse, an HTTP proxy. // Pathoschild (talk) 23:01, 27 March 2006 (UTC)

Proposal

Can you consider to stop now your submission to RfD and come back after a week or so?

I have things need to deal with here, mainly translation and that is my main reason I'm loggin on meta. You seem to concern deletion and it seems your sole interest at least now from my eyes. Some of your tagging and submission, or of your team, are somehow problematic for me (and to other editors too), and at least I personally feel need to fight to have some pages survive reducing time which I could have paid to deal with stuffs whose deadline is near or over. Besides other Foundation related issues, like Wikimania translation, which I supervise now.

Can you be frinedly to other editors whose primary interest is not deletion? Or not?

Sorry if I look too offensive, but I have finite time and limited energy. I am not omnipotent nor omnipresent.

Thank you for your attention, --Aphaia 10:15, 28 March 2006 (UTC)

My contributions are not geared towards deletion, and I am neither imbued with infinite time or omnipotence. I am actively dealing with the WikiProject on open proxies on three wikis, am busily rewriting Meta's help pages, and am dealing with several user projects as listed on my user page. I'm sorry if you feel that you do not have the time to deal with the nominations for deletion I've made recently. However, there are other editors and such nominations tend to stand for more than two to four weeks.
I'm also sorry you feel the need to "fight" these pages deletion; you need only place a vote on these pages, and other editors will do the same. The main purposes of these nominations isn't necessarily to delete every single one of these pages, but to prune the pages that are not needed or desired. I recognize that some of these pages may have a historical context I'm not aware of, which is why I've proposed on one nomination to group historical pages under a centralised directory such as Meta:Historical. This is a project I intend to begin myself, documenting the historical context using a structure I've perfected on Wikisource with the help of other editors. I look forward to your own contributions the the idea as you can afford the time, should you be interested.
That said, rest assured that I have no intention of making additional nominations until some of these have been dealt with; it is in everyone's interest that the page remain useable, if abnormally busy. // Pathoschild (talk) 13:55, 28 March 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for your understanding. As for me, main interest is not historical document, but my own tools. Related to translation and grammar which are enourmously useful for me as translation coordinator. Sometimes those quick references have helped me to maintain request pages written in languages I don't know really - but I need to make some updates sometimes. But you want to delete tme. I am reakkt really sad because of your hostile. And if you consider I need more effort than you because I need to write it in a FOREIGN language. And you don't understand what I need is really need for me to my coordination work. I am really sad adn looks your attitude are hostile at least now. Thank you. Aph.
I do not intend to be hostile; my nominations for deletion are simply meant to sort unneeded pages from historical and needed pages. If you feel a page should be kept, you need only place an appropriate vote at WM:RFD in any language you prefer. // Pathoschild (talk) 13:58, 30 March 2006 (UTC)

I DID. And to answer it, you kindly explained why theey shouldn't belong to meta. As for your hostility, I feel to be insulted with your keep vote to Template:Foreign. Thank you for your mercy to allow me discuss in a FOREIGN language, but now I don't want to do so, avoiding the further insult as treated a "forienger" by a newbie who wants to educate me what meta is in the language which is not foreign. Already I was insulted as disrespector of meta multilingualism because I wrote once my opinion in a FOREIGN language for you English native speakers. --Aphaia 05:48, 31 March 2006 (UTC)

Another question: if your intent is sorting between historical stuffs and needed, why you keep your vote for deletion after I explained it is needed for the other than you? Your statement is contradict with your own action. Aph.

You misunderstand the name of the template. It is not meant to designate a language that is objectively foreign, but one which is foreign to the user. It is perfectly acceptable for a Spanish user to place foreign on an English text. The template is simply meant to draw attention to a page whose quality is unknown to the user, so that users who understand the language in question can verify it. If anything, this encourages multilingual cooperation. Contrast this idea with an older user's suggestion that if a user doesn't understand a page, he simply ignore it and move on. That attitude promotes segregation and factionalism.
Note that I did not create or develop the template, and have had no dealing with it except my vote. I later struck it out and voted rename instead, since many users misinterpreted the name. I'm confused by your hostility in regards to the fact that I'm a native English speaker. I never made any negative comment towards you or anyone else about speaking another language. Although I speak English, that does not necessarily mean I'm associated in any way with other English users.
My intent with WM:RFD is indeed to sort between historical and non-historical pages. However, it is my opinion that simple age is not enough to make a page historical. It is natural that not all users disagree on what is historically significant, which is why we encourage all users to vote. Even if I vote differently than you do, there is no reason to react in a hostile manner; it is the collective votes of the entire community that will decide the result, not individual votes. // Pathoschild (talk) 06:03, 31 March 2006 (UTC)
I say, I feel disrespected by your vote and very hurt. Mere strike and change of vote can't redeem such indignity.
As for your interest, I haven't refered to historical documents, but my current and present tools that I am NOW using Without hostility, I can't understand why you so misunderstand my complaint. You disturb me and my work now, but you acted as if historical stuffs were our topics. --Aphaia 06:12, 31 March 2006 (UTC)

Vandalism

I noticed that you have previously blocked 80.160.75.130 for vandalism. I noticed that this user has vandalised the Windows Vista page and so I reverted the edit. I have warned the user on their talk page (It appears to be a static IP). I was wondering what further action might be taken against this user should they continue to vandalise? Should they continue to vandalise, you can report them at Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism. // Pathoschild (admin / talk) 19:58, 27 March 2006 (UTC)

Hail Mary

I restored the various texts of the Hail Mary in various language. In the note accompanying your revision, you state that the text can be found on Wikisource. They are not all listed on Wikisource. Please check before you arbitrarily delete contributions of other writers. Thank you. Aloysius Patacsil 04:01, 30 March 2006 (UTC)

SVG images

I see you reverted from X mark.svg to Red x.png on historical, stating that "That image displays improperly for most users" in your edit summary. MediaWiki converts SVG images to PNG thumbnails when they're used, so I don't think it has to do with the format in particular. Could you be more specific? // Pathoschild (admin / talk) 00:06, 2 April 2006 (UTC)

MediaWiki converts all SVG images to 24-bit PNG files. In Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 and earlier (used by a majority of site visitors), 24-bit PNG images display without transparencies. If, as in this case, no bKGD (background color) attribute is specified, transparent areas display as solid gray. Also, some older browsers cannot display any PNG transparencies (even if the files are 8-bit).
This is why I adapted the original image into the PNG version (to which I added a background color that precisely matches that of the templates in which the icon is used). I also tweaked the aspect ratio.
Incidentally, CSD I1 applies strictly to images "in the same image file format." —David Levy 00:55, 2 April 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for the explanation. I do not consider backwards incompatibility to be a major issue in this case, as it causes little more than an unsightly silverish background. Standard browsers display the transparencies correctly, including the soon-to-be-released Windows Internet Explorer. Although I can see the justification for not using these formats in the article namespace, I don't see any particular problem with using them in the Wikipedia namespace.
That said, I hadn't realised that the image used in historical was designed specifically to match the background. That is a hackish, if workable, solution until most users can view the alpha transparencies correctly. // Pathoschild (admin / talk) 20:43, 2 April 2006 (UTC)
As strongly as I dislike IE6 (which I use strictly for testing purposes), it is the de facto "standard," and it likely will remain in wide use for years to come. As such, this is more a case of "incompatibility" than of "backwards incompatibility."
There are some situations in which the SVG format's advantages outweigh this disadvantage. (For example, see Image:G4TV.svg, which I uploaded.) In the case of this template, however, I see no such advantages. (It isn't likely that many readers would be interested in viewing a larger version of the "X" icon.) And as I mentioned, I adjusted the aspect ratio. (It now matches that of the check marks used in related templates.)
The background color "hack" was not the only viable option, but it made the most sense in this situation; it enabled the creation of an 8-bit image (with a smaller file size), without posing any obvious disadvantages (because there's no need for the image to appear with a different background color). Another option would have been to create a 24-bit PNG version with a transparent background and a bKGD attribute of #F9F9F9 (the intended background color, which then would have appeared via IE6 in lieu of the default gray shade), but that merely would have increased the file size without providing any practical benefit. —David Levy 21:10, 2 April 2006 (UTC)
This entire discussion has been rendered moot, as Omniplex has used a program called Image Alchemy to create a GIF version (something that I was unable to do via Photoshop). It has a transparent background (IE-safe, of course), and the file size is much smaller. I wasn't aware that this was possible, and I intend to give this software a try. —David Levy 23:26, 2 April 2006 (UTC)

Vanity templates

If that was a user talk message, then what's the appropriate template to put up on a vanity article? --Shultz IV 02:24, 8 April 2006 (UTC)

That would be AFD. We don't accept vanity articles, but there's no relevant speedy deletion criteria. :) // Pathoschild (admin / talk) 07:19, 8 April 2006 (UTC)
Admins often speedy-delete them nonetheless. When I occasionally patrol the Special:Newpages, I sometimes see autobios, and two minutes later, they disappear. Therefore, I thought there was a pertinent speedy deletion criterion. --Shultz IV 04:50, 9 April 2006 (UTC)
They often do so, but they do so out of process. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but there's no template for out of process deletion. ;) You could use Vanity article, though. // Pathoschild (admin / talk) 06:50, 9 April 2006 (UTC)
Woo. I just reread my comment above in passing, and I have no idea what I was thinking at the time. Of course vanity articles are a criteria for speedy deletion; see db-bio. Sorry about that. // Pathoschild (admin / talk) 10:12, 9 April 2006 (UTC)

Removal of stub tag on Cro-Magnon man

I see you removed the stub tag from Cro-Magnon man. I believe this article meets the definition, as it has very little coverage of the subject. Could you please explain your removal a little more deeply than "rm stub"? :) // Pathoschild (admin / talk) 07:30, 8 April 2006 (UTC)
I have to confess, I was in a hurry and judged the stubbiness of the article on it's size. If you believe there is lack enough of sufficient information to warrant a stub tag, then you go right ahead and put one back on it. While you're at, make it a sorted-stub as well. Request of speedy delete

I have marked Arthur Rimbaud for speedy delete because it meets criteria G4 (Redundant). It was an author page that I moved to Author:Arthur Rimbaud so as to conform with naming conventions. Arthur Rimbaud is currently a REDRECT. I left a note on the talk page of the creator, (Steve mcconnell), about why I did the move. Let me know if I should have posted this to Proposed deletions. --Droll 06:58, 22 March 2006 (UTC)

There's no need to note speedy deletion requests at Proposed deletions, since by design an administrator finds them using :Category:Speedy deletion requests. Ironically, though, noting speedy deletion requests at Proposed Deletions tends to result in a quicker response, since Wikisource has far too few active administrators to regularly maintain the category. // Pathoschild (admin / talk) 16:03, 22 March 2006 (UTC)

Hello. Sorry, I was away at the time. Although there isn't always an administrator present to deal with vandalism immediately, it only takes a few moments for an administrator to reverse any bad faith edits when they return. You can report vandalism at the Administrator's noticeboard, although we usually notice it ourselves. Thanks, but...

Thanks for the help on the Modern Fiction:Authors page. I agree the style you came up with works better than mine and have converted the remaining sections. However, if you'd let me know somehow (and I'm fairly new here, I don't know if this is easy or even possible), it would have saved me some work :-). It actually confused me for a bit. I thought I'd done something to change the page without meaning to.

File:Wikisource News.png

Is it a good idea to presume the original to be GFDL? If it is selected to be a wikisource logo the Wikimedia Foundation will want to own the copyright, all rights reserved. /82.212.68.183 22:25, 7 March 2006 (UTC)

That's a good point. However, the image is unamiguously named, such that it won't be used for any purpose except as a logo for Wikisource News. If that particular logo is chosen, we can easily change it to another logo, particularly one of the similar logos proposed by Spirit. // Pathoschild (admin / talk) 22:29, 7 March 2006 (UTC)

Help on WS News

Hullo, I have just posted a piece on WS News, but the title is still in red. It is blued out in Instaview, though. I have carefully checked the wording of the entry on the contents page, and it reconciles with the wording on the top of the edit page for the piece. I am sure its something very simple that I cannot spot for trying too hard. Also on the title section I used my 4 tildes to get the user name and date, but I see my name comes twice. Is this a bug, or should I wrote my name out in the space provided in the template. Kind regards. Apwoolrich 20:26, 11 March 2006 (UTC)

Good contributions are welcome; there are a few basic pointers that can help us format text. If you copied and pasted the text from an online source, link to it on the talk page so that we can compare them. Remove any spaces at the start of a line, as that causes text to be formatted

like this.

You can request that more experienced editors format the text by adding it to Category:New texts. Welcome to Wikisource; the best way to learn how to edit is to see how we fix problems. :)

The working classes and the corn laws

Hi Pathoschild, if you've finished amending this one are you ok for it to be re-protected. I didn't spot that it'd been unprotected till I checked the protection log, would you mind noting on Wikisource:Protection_requests#Unprotection requests if you request any other unprotections (I'm assuming you requested it of course) & if appropriate re-proposing them for protection, just to keep things straight & ensure everything we think is protected actually is. Author:Saki

I was uploading short stories by this author as I had the time to proof read them. The version I was working on was from an HTML source at Project Gutenberg that included many features not present in the ASCII version that someone uploaded and that you were nice enough to add headers to. I uploaded the HTML version and just noted that I did a tweak. Just so you know I was not just messing around. Thanks. --Inge 06:09, 3 April 2006 (UTC)

Template:Chap

Please let me fix pages which use this template. It will take a few days. Since I am active here I wish you had let me know about changes to pages I created. I know you have no obligation to do this but it would seem to be a courteous thing. --Droll 21:05, 3 April 2006 (UTC)

All instances of the template were successfully converted to header by Pathosbot, as far as I know. The proposal to delete the template was accepted on January 23, and was only waiting for someone or some bot to perform the conversion. After a discussion at the Scriptorium around the same time, header was standardised in the style guide
I apologize if you had no way to know about the proposal; although Wikisource News is intended to remedy that kind of situation, it was created after the deletion proposal. // Pathoschild (admin / talk) 21:15, 3 April 2006 (UTC)
That's fine. I'm going to re-edit some of this stuff because the template at the bottom of the page does not look good there. I'm going to change them to template:footer. Let me know how you feel.
Feel free to change these, as header is intended for the header only. However, please see my suggestion at the Scriptorium concerning adding #top to a system message. // Pathoschild (admin / talk) 21:44, 3 April 2006 (UTC)

Arrows

This just a suggestion. I offend work off line so that I can use python and my favorite text editor. Many text editors do not do well with the characters "←" and "→". I use the elements ← and →. I have been wondering why you did not incorporate these symbols in the template. I think this would reduce user error and enable global changes if a decision is made to use different symbols such as and . These are not too good but who knows. Maybe in the future someone might come up with nice images of arrows. Thanks --Droll 22:24, 3 April 2006 (UTC)

Incorporating them into the template would require more complex coding, either resource-wasteful conditional programming or the backwards-incompatible hiddenStructure CSS hack. An image would work, but doesn't adjust to the size of the text in different browsers or local settings. Using the unicode entities works as well, but this can be unnecessarily confusing to new users.
When editing a text in an external editor, I typically copy and paste the text without the header template. I think that's the simplest and best solution. // Pathoschild (admin / talk) 22:50, 3 April 2006 (UTC)

EB1911 pages

Please do not have your bot move the EB1911 pages. There is a good reason that they are on that prefix. This should be an exception to our naming convetion.

While the Encyclopedia is in the public domain, "Encyclopedia Britannica" still has trademark protections on its name. There was a discussion a long time ago where we decided (and this was from input from Gutenberg people, too), that since Encyclopedia Britannica still has trademark rights for its name, we would do best to use an abridged name, hence we came up with "EB1911," in order to avoid legal troubles.—Zhaladshar (Talk) 20:31, 6 April 2006 (UTC)
I just noticed you were moving them manually. Sorry for the urgency, but I was thinking your bot was doing it, and then all the hundreds of pages would have been moved in about two seconds.—Zhaladshar (Talk) 20:43, 6 April 2006 (UTC)
I discussed the issue on IRC with Jean-Baptise Soufron, intellectual property lawyer and Wikimedia Foundation Legal Officer. The result of our discussion was that it was acceptable to use the full title per our 1911 Encyclopædia Britannica:Project Disclaimer, which states that "We do not reference to the trademark Encyclopædia Britannica®, but we strictly acknowledge the original title of this materal, which has gone into the Public Domain due to the expiration of the copyright of this material. Any use of the term Encyclopædia Britannica® should be confined strictly to this usage." I propose that we make this disclaimer more visible on all EB1911 pages, and otherwise apply our naming conventions as we would any other work. // Pathoschild (admin / talk) 22:06, 6 April 2006 (UTC)
Okay. Well, then, let's move everything over.—Zhaladshar (Talk) 23:23, 6 April 2006 (UTC)

Hey, does Live Preview work for you? It looks neat, and if it does, I might have to snag it from you...—Zhaladshar (Talk) 19:11, 11 February 2006 (UTC)

Don't take it directly from my stylesheet; you may crash your browser. I'm experimenting with methods to contain the script in a centralised location (like Wikisource:Tools and scripts) and allow users to install functions in a single line. This would mean that we could update scripts for all users instantly, without any further effort on their part.

I've already adapted it to Wikisource; feel free to add the code below to your javascript file. I'll notify you when I get the centralised script working. :)

 // Include Live Preview...

Hi,

What do we need to add to keep the relative links from actually showing up? They will be quite annoying if every subpage in the main namespace has those.—Zhaladshar (Talk) 22:41, 16 March 2006 (UTC)

Using piped syntax; for example, title page, Chapter 1, Chapter 2... // Pathoschild (admin / talk) 22:46, 16 March 2006 (UTC)
I think I'm doing something wrong. I tried doing that for Low-Life Deeps, but I can't seem to get them to show up as links. I did Chapter 1: In the Potteries but all that showed up was Chapter 1:In the Potteries, not actual links.—Zhaladshar (Talk) 22:53, 16 March 2006 (UTC)
Yes, I see the mistake. ../ goes up one level; from Low-Life Deeps, that gives an error (as it would be above the viewable directory). To go down one level, you need to use /. I converted Chapter 1 and the link to it from the title page as an example. // Pathoschild (admin / talk) 23:05, 16 March 2006 (UTC)
Thanks, I see what was wrong. However, on Low-Life Deeps/Chapter 1, you'll notice a small bit that says "<Low-Life Deeps" that's small and at the top of the page. Can we make that bit go away, or must we put up with it?—Zhaladshar (Talk) 00:11, 17 March 2006 (UTC)
Yes, we can make that go away easily enough. It's a minor change in the stylesheet, but it would be implemented on every page in the article namespace. Perhaps we should discuss on the Scriptorium to make sure everyone agrees. // Pathoschild (admin / talk) 16:09, 22 March 2006 (UTC)
Low-Life Deeps in fact links to the prelims page for the book with the title text and list of chapters. Should not the 'Previous' section in the header template for chapter one actually say this. I think this bit of text at the start of the page should be left in, as, assuming it will appear at the top of every chapter it will give readers a link back to the start of the book. The prelims page could also be used for a shortish Wikisource editorial note about the book, author etc, if required. As an example I am about to upload Smiles's Industrial Biography The PG scan is of the 1878 edition, but I am working from a later one which has additional appendices which I plan to include. The prelims page is the place to say this IMHO. Apwoolrich 19:16, 22 March 2006 (UTC)
Ignore my previous post. I don't know what I am talking about. The book's title links to the prelims. Apwoolrich 19:22, 22 March 2006 (UTC)
