Proposal

Can you consider to stop now your submission to RfD and come back after a week or so?

I have things need to deal with here, mainly translation and that is my main reason I'm loggin on meta. You seem to concern deletion and it seems your sole interest at least now from my eyes. Some of your tagging and submission, or of your team, are somehow problematic for me (and to other editors too), and at least I personally feel need to fight to have some pages survive reducing time which I could have paid to deal with stuffs whose deadline is near or over. Besides other Foundation related issues, like Wikimania translation, which I supervise now.

Can you be frinedly to other editors whose primary interest is not deletion? Or not?

Sorry if I look too offensive, but I have finite time and limited energy. I am not omnipotent nor omnipresent.

My contributions are not geared towards deletion, and I am neither imbued with infinite time or omnipotence. I am actively dealing with the WikiProject on open proxies on three wikis, am busily rewriting Meta's help pages, and am dealing with several user projects as listed on my user page. I'm sorry if you feel that you do not have the time to deal with the nominations for deletion I've made recently. However, there are other editors and such nominations tend to stand for more than two to four weeks.
I'm also sorry you feel the need to "fight" these pages deletion; you need only place a vote on these pages, and other editors will do the same. The main purposes of these nominations isn't necessarily to delete every single one of these pages, but to prune the pages that are not needed or desired. I recognize that some of these pages may have a historical context I'm not aware of, which is why I've proposed on one nomination to group historical pages under a centralised directory such as Meta:Historical. This is a project I intend to begin myself, documenting the historical context using a structure I've perfected on Wikisource with the help of other editors. I look forward to your own contributions the the idea as you can afford the time, should you be interested.

Related to translation and grammar which are enourmously useful for me as translation coordinator. You misunderstand the name of the template. It is not meant to designate a language that is objectively foreign, but one which is foreign to the user. It is perfectly acceptable for a Spanish user to place {{foreign}} on an English text. The template is simply meant to draw attention to a page whose quality is unknown to the user, so that users who understand the language in question can verify it. If anything, this encourages multilingual cooperation. Contrast this idea with an older user's suggestion that if a user doesn't understand a page, he simply ignore it and move on. That attitude promotes segregation and factionalism.
Note that I did not create or develop the template, and have had no dealing with it except my vote. I later struck it out and voted rename instead, since many users misinterpreted the name. I'm confused by your hostility in regards to the fact that I'm a native English speaker. I never made any negative comment towards you or anyone else about speaking another language. Although I speak English, that does not necessarily mean I'm associated in any way with other English users.
My intent with WM:RFD is indeed to sort between historical and non-historical pages. However, it is my opinion that simple age is not enough to make a page historical. It is natural that not all users disagree on what is historically significant, which is why we encourage all users to vote. I have warned the user on their talk page (It appears to be a static IP). I was wondering what further action might be taken against this user should they continue to vandalise? SVG images

I see you reverted from X mark.svg to Red x.png on {{historical}}, stating that "That image displays improperly for most users" in your edit summary. MediaWiki converts SVG images to PNG thumbnails when they're used, so I don't think it has to do with the format in particular. MediaWiki converts all SVG images to 24-bit PNG files. In Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 and earlier (used by a majority of site visitors), 24-bit PNG images display without transparencies. If, as in this case, no bKGD (background color) attribute is specified, transparent areas display as solid gray. Also, some older browsers cannot display any PNG transparencies (even if the files are 8-bit).
This is why I adapted the original image into the PNG version (to which I added a background color that precisely matches that of the templates in which the icon is used). I also tweaked the aspect ratio.
Incidentally, CSD I1 applies strictly to images "in the same image file format." —David Levy 00:55, 2 April 2006 (UTC)
Thanks for the explanation. I do not consider backwards incompatibility to be a major issue in this case, as it causes little more than an unsightly silverish background. Standard browsers display the transparencies correctly, including the soon-to-be-released Windows Internet Explorer. Although I can see the justification for not using these formats in the article namespace, I don't see any particular problem with using them in the Wikipedia namespace.
That said, I hadn't realised that the image used in {{historical}} was designed specifically to match the background. That is a hackish, if workable, solution until most users can view the alpha transparencies correctly. // Pathoschild (admin / talk) 20:43, 2 April 2006 (UTC)
As strongly as I dislike IE6 (which I use strictly for testing purposes), it is the de facto "standard," and it likely will remain in wide use for years to come. As such, this is more a case of "incompatibility" than of "backwards incompatibility."
There are some situations in which the SVG format's advantages outweigh this disadvantage. (For example, see Image:G4TV.svg, which I uploaded.) In the case of this template, however, I see no such advantages. (It isn't likely that many readers would be interested in viewing a larger version of the "X" icon.) The background color "hack" was not the only viable option, but it made the most sense in this situation; it enabled the creation of an 8-bit image (with a smaller file size), without posing any obvious disadvantages (because there's no need for the image to appear with a different background color). Another option would have been to create a 24-bit PNG version with a transparent background and a bKGD attribute of #F9F9F9 (the intended background color, which then would have appeared via IE6 in lieu of the default gray shade), but that merely would have increased the file size without providing any practical benefit. —David Levy 21:10, 2 April 2006 (UTC)
This entire discussion has been rendered moot, as Omniplex has used a program called Image Alchemy to create a GIF version (something that I was unable to do via Photoshop). It has a transparent background (IE-safe, of course), and the file size is much smaller. Although there isn't always an administrator present to deal with vandalism immediately, it only takes a few moments for an administrator to reverse any bad faith edits when they return. That's a good point. However, the image is unamiguously named, such that it won't be used for any purpose except as a logo for Wikisource News. Help on WS News

Hullo, I have just posted a piece on WS News, but the title is still in red. It is blued out in Instaview, though. I have carefully checked the wording of the entry on the contents page, and it reconciles with the wording on the top of the edit page for the piece. I am sure its something very simple that I cannot spot for trying too hard. Also on the title section I used my 4 tildes to get the user name and date, but I see my name comes twice. The version I was working on was from an HTML source at Project Gutenberg that included many features not present in the ASCII version that someone uploaded and that you were nice enough to add headers to. All instances of the template were successfully converted to {{header}} by Pathosbot, as far as I know. The proposal to delete the template was accepted on January 23, and was only waiting for someone or some bot to perform the conversion. After a discussion at the Scriptorium around the same time, {{header}} was standardised in the style guide

Arrows

This just a suggestion. I offend work off line so that I can use python and my favorite text editor. Many text editors do not do well with the characters "←" and "→". I use the elements &larr; and &rarr;. I have been wondering why you did not incorporate these symbols in the template. I think this would reduce user error and enable global changes if a decision is made to use different symbols such as ↼ and ⇀. These are not too good but who knows. Maybe in the future someone might come up with nice images of arrows. Thanks --Droll 22:24, 3 April 2006 (UTC)

Incorporating them into the template would require more complex coding, either resource-wasteful conditional programming or the backwards-incompatible hiddenStructure CSS hack. An image would work, but doesn't adjust to the size of the text in different browsers or local settings. Using the unicode entities works as well, but this can be unnecessarily confusing to new users.
When editing a text in an external editor, I typically copy and paste the text without the {{header}} template. I think that's the simplest and best solution. // Pathoschild (admin / talk) 22:50, 3 April 2006 (UTC)

EB1911 pages

Please do not have your bot move the EB1911 pages. There is a good reason that they are on that prefix. This should be an exception to our naming convetion.

While the Encyclopedia is in the public domain, "Encyclopedia Britannica" still has trademark protections on its name. There was a discussion a long time ago where we decided (and this was from input from Gutenberg people, too), that since Encyclopedia Britannica still has trademark rights for its name, we would do best to use an abridged name, hence we came up with "EB1911," in order to avoid legal troubles.—Zhaladshar (Talk) 20:31, 6 April 2006 (UTC)

I discussed the issue on IRC with Jean-Baptise Soufron, intellectual property lawyer and Wikimedia Foundation Legal Officer. The result of our discussion was that it was acceptable to use the full title per our 1911 Encyclopædia Britannica:Project Disclaimer, which states that "We do not reference to the trademark Encyclopædia Britannica®, but we strictly acknowledge the original title of this materal, which has gone into the Public Domain due to the expiration of the copyright of this material. Any use of the term Encyclopædia Britannica® should be confined strictly to this usage." Don't take it directly from my stylesheet; you may crash your browser. I'm experimenting with methods to contain the script in a centralised location (like Wikisource:Tools and scripts) and allow users to install functions in a single line. This would mean that we could update scripts for all users instantly, without any further effort on their part.

I've already adapted it to Wikisource; feel free to add the code below to your javascript file. I'll notify you when I get the centralised script working. :)

You just recently installed it; try refreshing your browser to purge the stylesheet from your cache. It should work then. I'm working on a central location for these scripts. Yes, I see the mistake. [[../]] goes up one level; from Low-Life Deeps, that gives an error (as it would be above the viewable directory). To go down one level, you need to use [[/]]. Low-Life Deeps in fact links to the prelims page for the book with the title text and list of chapters. Should not the 'Previous' section in the header template for chapter one actually say this. I think this bit of text at the start of the page should be left in, as, assuming it will appear at the top of every chapter it will give readers a link back to the start of the book. The prelims page could also be used for a shortish Wikisource editorial note about the book, author etc, if required. As an example I am about to upload Smiles's Industrial Biography The PG scan is of the 1878 edition, but I am working from a later one which has additional appendices which I plan to include.
