I am sorry but our greek WV proposal has 10 interested users for 1 1/2 month when do you think it is going to be accepted (or rejected). Thank you very much.

You can ask that at m:talk:language subcommittee. —{admin} Pathoschild 03:42:26, 15 September 2007 (UTC)

What should we do to open the Greek WV? Please answer to my talk page. Thanks. --Diaza or ZaDiak

Wikipedia Tachelhit

hello Dear PathosChild i want you to take a look [here http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Requests_for_new_languages/Wikipedia_Tachelhit] and show us the way to creat a wikipedia on tachelhit

thank you very much .(:)--Zanatos11 20:58, 3 October 2007 (UTC)

Sorry for the late response; I didn't see your message earlier. The request for a Wikipedia Tachelhit has been conditionally approved, so it will be created once all the criteria listed on its analysis page are met:
  1. an active test project (see activity statistics);
  2. translate most of the MediaWiki interface into Tachelhit (list).
{admin} Pathoschild 18:35:30, 28 October 2007 (UTC)

Dear Pathoschild , i have a real problem, the problem is about the alphabet that will be used in the creation of Tachelhit wikipedia latin or w:en:Tifinagh one .

  • the latin one is the easiest and it is supportable by the major of computers and it has been used by the taqbaylit wikipedia
  • Tifinagh is a perfect alphabet of tachelhit and it is the original, but the problem is that many people can't see the caractres if they didn't install them.

question : is it possible to creat two wikipedias of tachelhit ? and i am ready to rewrite articles to Tifinagh alphabet

thank you very much.--Zanatos11 22:30, 11 November 2007 (UTC)

Hello. No, Wikipedia is divided by language but not by script. There is a Multilingual MediaWiki feature being developed to address this problem, but in the meantime one solution is for both scripts to coexist on the Tachelhit Wikipedia. There will probably be no title conflicts in having articles in both scripts, with their own separate category structures in each script. —{admin} Pathoschild 00:06:35, 12 November 2007 (UTC)
do you mean to write two similar articles in the same wikipedia ?(by the two scripts)--Zanatos11 00:45, 12 November 2007 (UTC)
Yes; for example, you could have two articles named "Kidal" and "????", both about the same subject. —{admin} Pathoschild 00:52:33, 12 November 2007 (UTC)
what about system messages ?--Zanatos11 01:06, 12 November 2007 (UTC)
You can localize the interface on BetaWiki into both scripts; then users can select their preferred script to see the interface in that script. This could be explained at the top of each page on the Tachelhit Wikipedia (using the site notice). —{admin} Pathoschild 01:21:33, 12 November 2007 (UTC)
thank you very much :) --Zanatos11 01:29, 12 November 2007 (UTC)
You're welcome. :) —{admin} Pathoschild 01:30:16, 12 November 2007 (UTC)

Enforcement of request policy for existing wikis

Per a discussion on this page (Meta talk:Language proposal policy), you said that the abbreviations of existing language Wikipedias is beyond the scope of that discussion. Is there any sort of plan to bring the names in line with ISO 639?

I bring this up due to an unrelated question involving als.wikipedia.org

als is the ISO abbreviation for en:Tosk Albanian, while being used for the en:Alemannic German (ISO code - gsw) language Wikipedia.

Since I don't spend a whole lot of time here on Meta, I'll watch for a response here. (I'll also drop a note on your en:talk page.)

Thanks in advance : ) - Jc37 21:38, 3 October 2007 (UTC)

No, that is beyond the authority of the language subcommittee. I'm not sure how you'd go about changing the code used in a domain; maybe misuse the Proposals for closing projects. —{admin} Pathoschild 17:37:21, 07 October 2007 (UTC)
Thank you for the info. I've passed this link on to others interested in this as well. There's also a related-post requesting info at Meta talk:Language proposal policy#Alemannic. Thanks again for the clarification. - Jc37 21:04, 11 October 2007 (UTC)

Hello! Please take a look at Requests for new languages/Wikipedia Seri, thank you! SeriCtam 15:50, 5 October 2007 (UTC)

Hello. I'll take a look later today. —{admin} Pathoschild 14:48:32, 06 October 2007 (UTC)
Perfect! Then it's possible for me to continue the interface translations :) SeriCtam 14:52, 6 October 2007 (UTC)
Today's over. Ollein 15:30, 7 October 2007 (UTC)
It was an estimate. There are a lot of requests to check, and little free time to do it. I'll take a look today, if I have time. —{admin} Pathoschild 17:33:04, 07 October 2007 (UTC)
Alright. Ollein 17:34, 7 October 2007 (UTC)
Aren't those translations done yet? Is it so much? PWRHouse 17:40, 11 October 2007 (UTC)
I've noted the status on the request page, as you might have noticed. There are currently 942 untranslated interface messages, though some of those are optional (see the request talk page). —{admin} Pathoschild 18:05:17, 11 October 2007 (UTC)

Wikipedia Bikol

Hi Pathoschild,

1465 messages have been translated out of a total of 1792.

This means that only [1] are not yet translated.

However, 330+ of those messages do not need translation before final approval,

For example, none of these messages below are required at all before final approval:

  • common* (2)
  • edittools
  • exif-* (273)
  • export* (7)
  • feed* (2)
  • import* (27)
  • lock* (8)
  • mainpagedocfooter
  • mainpagetext
  • metadata* (6)
  • monobook* (2)
  • pagetitle
  • unlock* (6)

Therefore 0 messages remain to be translated.

When can bcl.wikipedia.org be created?

Regards, --Jose77 05:51, 6 October 2007 (UTC)

Hello, thank you for notifying me. There's a few final messages to localize, as I've explained on the talk page. I'll examine the test project later today to see if the request is otherwise ready for final approval (results are public at incubator:user:Pathoschild/Status). —{admin} Pathoschild 14:46:35, 06 October 2007 (UTC)
Hi Pathoschild, I've now translated the remaining variables you listed. --Steven*fung 02:12, 7 October 2007 (UTC)
I've amended the translation of Media to singular, as SkyHarbor suggested. --Steven*fung 13:06, 7 October 2007 (UTC)
Okay; I'll push it though the process for final approval. This should take about a week. —{admin} Pathoschild 17:21:03, 07 October 2007 (UTC)
Can't wait. --Filipinayzd

Final approval, now
Bikol Wiki in incubator will not attract contributors. --121.1.25.82 00:46, 24 October 2007 (UTC) 00:33, 24 October 2007 (UTC)

Filipinazd, I am already working to have it approved. You can follow the relevant discussion from the public archives. In the meantime, please be patient; you can continue to edit on the Incubator until it is approved. —{admin} Pathoschild 02:11:59, 24 October 2007 (UTC)

You're welcome. —{admin} Pathoschild 19:45:46, 04 December 2007 (UTC)

Wikipedia Ottoman Turkish

Conditional approval

Hi Pathoschild, It appears you know what is the situation with the approval process for the new languages. I am particularly interested in the faith of the application for the creation of Ottoman test Wikipedia. Application now is a year old. Many users have spent hundereds of hours to make it more successful than some Wikipediyas in public, but there has not been any change in the status of the application! No one seems to be interested to even discuss about it. I have left messages here and but only Shanel has responded. Would you know what is the best course of action to get this test Wiki checked and its case to be discussed? Appriciate if you can help me with this.

Thanks in advance. --Mehrdad 17:37, 11 October 2007 (UTC)

Hello Mehrdad. I will try to process it on Monday. If it's not done by Tuesday, leave me another message to remind me. —{admin} Pathoschild 02:13:56, 12 October 2007 (UTC)
I've posted the results of my analysis at incubator:user:Pathoschild/Status/wp-ota, and proposed the request for conditional approval pending localization. I'll post an explanation of what remains to do once the project is conditionally approved (hopefully in 48 hours). —{admin} Pathoschild 04:09:43, 16 October 2007 (UTC)

Hi Pathoschild, thanks for activating the process and proposing the approval. I understand some members of the committee are not convinced enough to approve the project yet. I would like to open a dialogue to discuss their concerns. Where do you think is most appropriate for this purpose? Left this question also in the Discussion page of the Project Subcommittees/Language/Archives/2007-10 .

We feel that somehow there has been a change of rule recently, while over the last one year that we have been waiting for the subcommittee to process our application. During this time projects with similar cases are approved but now the rule has changed! I haven't looked back to see how many of these so called "historical", "classical", "traditional", or "dead" languages have been approved while we have been waiting and some of us have spent hundreds of hours and convinced that :

Can't think of any other good reason to stop people from opening a project in the incubator other than... missing an ISO code. When they don't have one they are going to get rejected anyway, so maybe it's better if we do not have people working like crazy to be later told "oh, sorry, you cannot have a wiki and we knew it from the start".
Apart from that it should be okay. If anyone has a valid ISO code I will always approve an incubator project, so basically this could be automated.

Berto 'd Sera
[2]

The application for the Ottoman Wikipedia has been submitted in October 2006. Now after development of more than 1000 articles, I believe it is fare to expect that rules of October 2006 should apply to it and not the rules of the recent weeks.

We are in process of gathering some information to show that Ottoman language as a classical Turkish is thought in various education institutes and major Universities, hope this helps to show the current status of Ottoman language.

I would appreciate if you can help us to bring these points to the attention of the other committee members please. Thanks for your support and guidance so far. --Mehrdad 16:11, 21 October 2007 (UTC)

Hello Mehrdad. if you look at the request page again, you'll notice that I've already removed the note; see the 12th archived message in the subcommittee discussion for information that you might think welcome.
However, no request for an extinct language has ever been approved by the subcommittee. The policy exists to ensure that all new Wikimedia wikis are of high quality, not to be fair to contributors. Thus, if the policy is changed to prevent forseeable problems, it applies immediately to any uncreated wiki. Fortunately, it seems that the policy change may not affect the Ottoman Turkish Wikipedia at all, as the above link shows. —{admin} Pathoschild 16:25:32, 21 October 2007 (UTC)

hello Pathoschild

why did you change this page ? [3] Ottoman test Wikipedia started 14 months ago. There are o lot of articles in Ottoman test Wikipedia. But the cahanges is now. I am a history teacher in Istanbul. User Bèrto 'd Sèra's idea is not true about of Ottoman Turkish Wikipedia in this page [4] every History teacher and every literature teacher know ottoman language. because they learn ottoman language in Univercity and there are alot of course a bout of Ottoman language for public. every people can buy ottoman language books from internet [5]

--Tarih 18:52, 21 October 2007 (UTC)

Hello, please see the discussion above. Mehrdad raised the same points. —{admin} Pathoschild 19:18:53, 21 October 2007 (UTC)

Approval

Hi Pathoschild, I would like to thank you for your support on conditional approval of Ottoman WIkipedia. You may like to know that currently there is a discussion in process for the approval of Ottoman Turkish Wikipedia. As a one of the requesters for approval of this project, I have left some comments in Special_projects_subcommittees/Languages page. Also have placed some information on Educational activities on Ottoman Language that you may like to browse.
Thanks in advance for your attention on this subject. --Mehrdad 17:37, 30 October 2007 (UTC)

Hi Pathoschild, To assist with your assessment of the education activity for Ottoman Turkish, my Turkish Wikipedian friend Tarih, have helped me to compile a page as Statistics on Ottoman Turkish Education using available official statistics based on matrix provided byHigher Education Board of Turkey (Tablo 4) on its official website. Using this source we could extract the number of first year students who will be thought Ottoman Turkish Language during their courses. According to this tables, the total for the State Universities are 11870 students and private universities 1215 , which bring us to the Grand Total of 13085 students learning Ottoman Turkish (Osmanli). Considering these figures are just for the first year, it is safe to assume that at least twice this number being trained in this language. We hope this will help to clarify the status of this language as a prerequisite course for Turkish Literature, art and historical research. --Mehrdad 15:31, 4 November 2007 (UTC)

I've forwarded your message to the subcommittee, for those you haven't sent it to. —{admin} Pathoschild 20:20:51, 04 November 2007 (UTC)

Hello, I've deleted your message regarding education on Talk:Special projects subcommittees/Languages/Archives/2007-11 because I've already forwarded the same message to the subcommittee. —{admin} Pathoschild 17:25:24, 05 November 2007 (UTC)

Hi Pathoschild, The deletion is fine by me, as long as it is reflected on the discussions. Now that Bèrto 'd Sèra is approving the Ottoman Wikipedia, you and Shanel? had very positive view of the project and the test Wiki, I am very optimistic on approval of the project. Thanks for copy of my earlier message to subcommittee and for over all support you've provided. --Mehrdad 14:16, 6 November 2007 (UTC)
There seems to be a general consensus that historical languages will be rejected; you will still need to provide evidence that it is used by native living communities who cannot read modern Turkish, not just studied in university. —{admin} Pathoschild 15:58:18, 06 November 2007 (UTC)

We have tried to clarify that apart from academic activity on this classical language there is also a community of interest who know and use this language.
The list of educational institutes and number of students was compiled to provide evidence of use as a classical language. The evidence of use for this language lays in understanding the issues relating to minorities in the countries surrounding the Turkey.
The fact that hundreds of thousands of people speaking this language can be seen on records offered by Ethnologue.
*Languages of Iran]
*Languages of Iraq
However unlike Turkey this language is not thought in public schools in Bulgharia, Iraq, Makedonia, due to nationalistic policies of the these states. So the people learn the language privately mostly out of need to know religious texts or for literature enthusiasts. For instance me as an Azerbaijani from Iran, I know this language because it is classic version of my native language Azerbaijani. Decades ago it would have named as Turki and would have been categorised as dialect of Osmanli (Ottoman Turkish), and back then no one called it Azerbaijani.

There are tens of thousands of people like me who know the script, because we have studied the same script to use with Iran’s national language Farsi/Persian.
The Wikipedias article on the subject of Azerbaijani language is a good source to find out how close this language is to Turkish before the language and script reform in Turkey. Unlike the Azeri in Republic of Azerbaijan we use the same Arabic script used for Ottoman Turkish for hundreds of years. I ma sure the subcommittee members would consider the above facts before making their decisions.
Thanks --Mehrdad 17:11, 6 November 2007 (UTC)

Wikiquote Breton

Hi! The test language for wikiquote in breton is very dynamic as you can see here. I think we are ready to go "out there", to become "official". The Mediawiki interface is translated at more than 90% (one of the very few languages with such a high percentage) and the test wikiquote has already all its "infrastructure" settled. What should we do more? Thanks for your help.Benoni 14:15, 15 October 2007 (UTC)

Hello. My analysis of the test project shows that it's not successful yet (there are not enough active editors). Once the community is a little larger, the project should be all set for approval. :) —{admin} Pathoschild 19:21:30, 18 October 2007 (UTC)
Hello! Could you update your analysis here? You will see that all the criterias are complete now: the Mediawiki Interface is complete (it was already) and we've got an active community (very active even, I would say, for a wikiquote). We've got more than 50 article and more than 80 pages, which means there are at least 36 official wikiquotes with less articles than us. There is nothing missing for the final approval. Thank you in advance!Benoni 13:13, 4 November 2007 (UTC)
I've updated the statistics; I'm pushing it through the process and, if all goes well, it will be approved four days from now. However, it may take some time for the developers to create the wiki, because they create wikis in batches. —{admin} Pathoschild 16:11:50, 06 November 2007 (UTC)
Ok, thank you very much Benoni 21:46, 6 November 2007 (UTC)
Thx for approving the breton wikiquote! Until the creation of the new wiki by the developpers, can we still work on the incubator, or is it better to wait?Benoni 14:00, 12 November 2007 (UTC)
Yes, please do continue working on it. The developers may take up to a few weeks to create the wiki, unfortunately. They create them in batches. —{admin} Pathoschild 20:22:13, 12 November 2007 (UTC)

Wikipedia Seri

Is it really necessary to also translate the upload form? Many other languages also haven't got it translated. It's a little bit difficult to translate to Seri. SeriCtam 14:26, 16 October 2007 (UTC)

Yes, unless you intend to disable uploads on that wiki. Could you explain what the difficulty is? —{admin} Pathoschild 19:04:37, 18 October 2007 (UTC)

Wikiquote Limburgish

Hey, everything is translated execpt those viewed at the talk page of requests for new languages/Wikiquote Limburgish and those who are equal to the fallback language Dutch. We await final aprove and creation. --OosWesThoesBes 15:08, 18 October 2007 (UTC)

Shanel has proposed that the project be approved. —{admin} Pathoschild 19:02:32, 18 October 2007 (UTC)

When will li.wikiquote.org be created? It looks like the developers take a lóng, lóng, very lóóóóóóóóóóóng holiday. I and other people are waiting (say, ¾ the Limburgish community, 15 people) --OosWesThoesBes 15:03, 28 October 2007 (UTC)

Ask the developers in #wikimedia-techconnect; the request is bug 11760. I remind them regularly, but how long it takes is up to them. —{admin} Pathoschild 18:38:58, 28 October 2007 (UTC)
Maybe there are more developers needed and the only response so far is a nonsense respons. Maybe you could consider already approving requests for new languages/Wikibooks Limburgish? It takes so long before the developers stop sleeping. --OosWesThoesBes 15:00, 2 November 2007 (UTC)
That request doesn't quite meet the requirements yet (see its status page), although with two active wikis it might be easier to attract the community to do so. With regards to localization, there are only a few required messages left that were missed by the Limburgish Wikiquote translators. —{admin} Pathoschild 00:42:54, 03 November 2007 (UTC)
Wikibooks: The reason there were so many interested to the Wikiquote was because I did advertisings to let people know this was going on. I've still not done this with the Wikibooks, but I will do it soon. After I do that we can expect more interested users.
Localization: Yes, I know. Those are export- import exif- etc. And many are equal to the Dutch. After I completed the localization I've looked through the list a few times and I couldn't find any still needed to be translated. --OosWesThoesBes 07:30, 3 November 2007 (UTC)

Knock, knock.... --OosWesThoesBes 18:28, 24 November 2007 (UTC)

Yes? —{admin} Pathoschild 18:38:12, 24 November 2007 (UTC)
Developers... I've still not heard any new excuse... --OosWesThoesBes 18:40, 24 November 2007 (UTC)
Are you talking about the creation of new wikis, or the AJAX transclusion table? —{admin} Pathoschild 18:43:03, 24 November 2007 (UTC)
Limburgish Wikiquote. --OosWesThoesBes 18:45, 24 November 2007 (UTC)
I've moved your comments to the appropriate section. —{admin} Pathoschild 18:47:58, 24 November 2007 (UTC)
Ok. And developers? --OosWesThoesBes 18:49, 24 November 2007 (UTC)
They are beyond my control. Otherwise, the wiki would have been created the moment it was approved. —{admin} Pathoschild 18:51:50, 24 November 2007 (UTC)
Ever been on Wikia? [6] If your proposal is accepted automatically is a wikia created, may be something for the future here? And yes I know Wikimedia and Wikia are not sisterprojects or related. --OosWesThoesBes 18:53, 24 November 2007 (UTC)
Maybe you can suggest that in #wikimedia-tech or on Wikitech-l. —{admin} Pathoschild 19:49:46, 24 November 2007 (UTC)
Thanks :) --OosWesThoesBes 08:03, 25 November 2007 (UTC)

Wiktionary Lozi

Is it really necessary to have native speakers? There are 2 people willing to contribute. --OosWesThoesBes 09:44, 21 October 2007 (UTC)

We need some editors fluent in that language, though not necessarily native. The requirement you're referring to is that there are living native speakers in the world. —{admin} Pathoschild 15:21:05, 21 October 2007 (UTC)
I think I found a fluent speaker. Unfortunately he has never worked with a computer before... First he needs to learn that and than he needs to learn wikisyntax. Maybe it will take a few days before he can edit, but I inform you of this development. --OosWesThoesBes 07:04, 9 November 2007 (UTC)

I am getting crazy of it. The only thing I have is a dictionary of 1937 (Jalla) which only contains Lozi - English, very useful... Maybe you know what the Lozi words for copy, user, template, project and so on are? Could we skip the interface part? SF-Language 16:10, 9 November 2007 (UTC)

No need to worry :) A fluent speaker will soon translate the interface I hope. --OosWesThoesBes 17:36, 9 November 2007 (UTC)
I've just found out some words don't seem te exist in Lozi. What do we need to do? Use the English words? --OosWesThoesBes 14:40, 10 November 2007 (UTC)
That is up to the local community. It would be best to translate is at well as possible, since it must be understandable by native readers. —{admin} Pathoschild 03:05:46, 12 November 2007 (UTC)

How necessary is the admin's interface? --OosWesThoesBes 15:59, 11 December 2007 (UTC)

I thought that I've read somewhere the administrators interface is optional on the first project. How necessary is it to translate it? I can't find the right word for protect. --OosWesThoesBes 18:31, 12 December 2007 (UTC)

Problem solved. Bukelelize means protect. But I still can't find translations for words like resolution etc. --OosWesThoesBes 18:48, 12 December 2007 (UTC)
That is correct; it's explained in the requester's handbook under "What needs to be localized". This doesn't include public messages related to administrators like protectedpagetext. —{admin} Pathoschild 20:09:26, 12 December 2007 (UTC)

Subcommittee templates

Hello. Please don't use language subcommittee templates like {{ls-localization}} or add comments using {{ls-header}}, since those are only for official subcommittee messages. You're free to derive a normal comment without the wording which suggests it is official, of course. :) —{admin} Pathoschild 16:46:49, 21 October 2007 (UTC)

I added it to know which messages don't need to be translated, could you make a new list of not necessary messages for me on the request talk page? SF-Language 17:18, 21 October 2007 (UTC)
The following messages don't need translation before final approval (although you are free to translate them anyway). The * symbol followed by a number means that several messages beginning with that are unneeded. For example, unlock* (6) means that six messages with names starting with "unlock" (unlockdb, unlockdbtext, unlockconfirm, unlockbtn, unlockdbsuccesssub, and unlockdbsuccesstext) are unneeded. The administrator interface is also optional for the first wiki in a language, but future projects in that language will need to translate it.

Some kind of mailing list?

Where is the real discussion for this being held? I am interested in seeing the non-archived portions of those messages. Thank you. --Chris S. 23:03, 25 October 2007 (UTC)

Hello, the discussion is held on langcom-l, a private mailing list. The full archives are strictly confidential; this protects some users in sensitive situations, and allows members to have off-the-record discussion when necessary. Only messages from users who have explicitly agreed appear in the public archives. —{admin} Pathoschild 23:07:46, 25 October 2007 (UTC)

Wikipedia Crimean Tatar

Hello! We have now finished translation of the MediaWiki interface. The translation was done offline, so I now have two text files with intercface: MessagesCrh_lat.php and MessagesCrh_cyr.php (for Crimean Tatar in latin and Cyrillic script). Could you please explain what shall I do with them? Don Alessandro 11:03, 30 October 2007 (UTC)

Please give them to Nikerabbit to eat. —{admin} Pathoschild 13:58:14, 30 October 2007 (UTC)
OK, I've asked him, but he seems to be not active both here and in Finnish wiki. Don Alessandro 15:39, 31 October 2007 (UTC)
You should file a request on Bugzilla (suggested template). Attach the two files, and in the description box mention relevant information like language codes. —{admin} Pathoschild 16:55:37, 31 October 2007 (UTC)

As the core interface is now translated, could you please, update status page of our project? I suppose, that we are now active enough to go to the final step (i.e. final approval and creation). Don Alessandro 08:22, 30 November 2007 (UTC)

Wikisource Armenian

Hi, I just saw the the archived conversation about the approval of Armenian Wikisource, and wanted to let you know of my point of view. While I'm going to stick to what we have discussed in IRC, and drum up activity on oldwikisource, your position is flawed in several ways:

  1. For one thing, your message to the langcom leads everyone to believe that there is only one contributor to the well-being of the Armenian Wikisource (I assume you meant ??????, since he is the most active contributor according to your statistics), while not taking into consideration, that the langcom's localization condition was satisfied in less than 3 weeks (and took me off of your statistics' active contributor's list: I have only so many hands to do things).
  2. You claim, that the oldwikisource doesn't inhibit a small community in any way, though you don't take into account the fact, that everything there is in English, written with roman letters, which is very different from Armenian. And while a registered user can change the interface language, the default is repelling for a new comer. I myself hate putting Armenian original texts in "Category:Armenian" (sic), which is why I haven't taken the effort to actively promote the test project anywhere (the only step taken in this direction was a short message on hy:wp community portal, and one-sentence notes on the Armenian Wikiprojects in en:wp and ru:wp, asking for support for the request).
  3. At the time of approval only one condition {before final approval} was stated, and that was localization [7]. Which stayed unchanged on the request page for 19 days. And all of a sudden (after a significant effort was spent on satisfying that only condition), the conditions change. While I greatly appreciate the amount of work you are doing for language requests, this is not the way to do things. In such case the langcom appears nothing less of deceitful, which undermines its charter and ruins its image. Besides, what is the difference between revoking the conditional approval (in the case of Tachelhit Wikipedia langcom appeared to be against the measure), and revoking the "satisfied" conditions (in this case unanimously by you)? I do believe that there should be a better way of handling things than couple of OK's sent back and forth to put things into motion, and then suddenly realizing that something is missing.
  4. If you would have looked at the activities in the test project over a longer period, you would have seen that the activity only died out about two months ago (vacation season, and then an uncertain future of the request undoubtedly contributed to its going into a passive mode). By the same standard that you are judging the test project, the langcom should have been long ripped of its charter and relieved of the position having any say in language requests, since during the months of July-August there was hardly any activity on its part.
  5. The waiting for "the community to become bigger" as a precaution against the probability that "the project will become another empty wiki that stewards and the small-wiki monitoring volunteers need to babysit" is at best naive. If the activity increases in the next couple of weeks, and the request gets approved, still nothing would prevent from future freezes. We have seen this once with the very same Armenian Wikisource (if you would have looked at the listed contributors on the request page, and checked the contributions, you'd seen that there wasn't a "single contributor" to the test project, which you led the langcom to believe - see #1 above), where I do believe the inactivity on the langcom's part was the main factor of souring inactivity in this (test) wiki.

While I'm not certain, your message to langcom does appear to have been sent before our conversation in IRC, in which case I ask you to consider posting my points above in the same thread as well. In the meantime, I'll work on raising the activity indices... - Teak 15:09, 29 October 2007 (UTC)

Hello Teak. The status pages are a new addition that give editors a comprehensive report on their progress, and lists exactly what remains to be done. None of the conditions applicable to the request for an Armenian Wikisource changed; rather, a criteria that had previously met is now no longer fulfilled. The checklist on the status page shows all the defined criteria, and which have already been fulfilled. Activity is judged over the last month, not over its history. Now that localization is complete, I hope you will return to editing (and invite those who have left) and it will soon be approved.
While it is possible that an active test project will lead to an inactive wiki, this is far less likely than with an inactive test project. I do not think there is naïveté on my part in this regard; as a steward and frequent collaborator with the small-wiki monitoring team, I am well-aware of the current problem with inactive wikis. We take reasonable safeguards against new wikis becoming inactive, though of course we cannot completely prevent the possibility. If the wiki becomes inactive over a long period of time, it will be eventually be closed.
When all the criteria listed on the status are simultaneously fulfilled over the analysis period (one month), the request will be approved. :) —{admin} Pathoschild 21:30:40, 29 October 2007 (UTC)
If the criteria of activity is 2+ contributors over a period of one month, then that criteria wasn't reached on October 7th, either, when the request was conditionally approved. The activity died in late August, and during the months of September and first half of October only ~25 edits were done by only one contributor - myself. So the application of the criteria (analysis of activity during the last 30 days) does look arbitrary in this case. If anything the activity in the test project for Armenian Wikisource only improved.
I wholly agree with you that a successful test project has a better chance of surviving long term, than an unsuccessful one. The difference though is how one defines success. 400+ articles by wikipedians with a long history of active participation in Armenian Wikipedia (one is sysop in hy:wp, and all have histories of 1.5+ years), and a rather quick fulfillment of the localization condition rings rather loud success to me, and more so when compared to a wikisource request that got approved within a week, with no test project whatsoever, just because so many people showed up on the first day, and which is yet to surpass the Armenian project after enjoying more than two months of its separate wiki.
Does your last paragraph imply that the project doesn't have a chance of approval sooner than in a month's time?! If so, then it does look like the langcom seriously inhibits the development of projects. Please unambiguously state what level of activity is expected from a test project (e.g. number of pages within a period of time by this many contributors), and do so in WM:LPP. And I ask you to strongly consider bringing this discussion of ours to the attention of langcom members, and asking everyone to judge the success of the test project on their own. I do understand the principle of "drumming up activity, so that everyone feels safe", but postponing the approval, only because the langcom wasn't there at the right time to measure the success is anecdotal.
P.S. ? about your remark that an inactive project will eventually be closed - if the closure was such a simple and smooth process, I would expect that the inactivity condition of a test project would get minimized, since an inactive project would be closed (say by locking the db), and even if in its initial period the project created several articles, it's still a positive result. What I understood from your message to langcom, the fear was about the project becoming a burden for SWMT, well then, the issue and the answer to it lies in another realm, say the creation of "lockcom", that would have the db's locked if there are no useful edits within 30+days (this would also save the volunteers' time). But using this argument to deny a domain to a project that has already surpassed many separate wikisources doesn't strike me as particularly logical. Teak 22:58, 29 October 2007 (UTC)
We're discussing this on IRC, so I won't duplicate my answers here. —{admin} Pathoschild 23:39:02, 29 October 2007 (UTC)

Consent for public archival

Hello Teak. Messages you send to the language subcommittee are automatically saved to its private archives, but censored in in the public archives. The public archives allow the community to read most discussions, but it is an opt-in system.

Even if you agree to public archival, you can choose on a case-by-case basis to exclude a discussion, comment, or even fragment from the public archives (just writing "don't archive this" would suffice). Is it okay to make your messages public? —Pathoschild 19:28:36, 03 ???????? 2007 (UTC)

Hi Pathoschild. Please do feel free to publicly archive my messages that I send to langcom-l (meant to include this in the message, but forgot in the end). Thanks. Teak 21:09, 3 November 2007 (UTC)

Wikipedia Lower Sorbian

Hello, we have alredy translated whole interface. What should be done next ? Pe7er 14:35, 5 November 2007 (UTC)

Hello, the only task left is to revive the test project, since there is currently only one regular editor. Once that is done, I'll push it through the approval process.

Well that is because we had focused on translation of the interface, there was no necasary to work on articles in project that could be rejected because of missing interface. Pe7er 15:08, 7 November 2007 (UTC)
Hello Pathoschild. I'm from Upper Sorbian Wikipedia and I'm interested as well that our sister project for Lower Sorbian will be official soon. As Pe7er wrote, the interface has been fully translated. May be that there are few users for dsb here in Incubator only but our experience has shown that new users will come and cooperate as soon as the project is official. I think the projects in Incubator are hidden so that many people don't see the project. Kind regards, --Michawiki 17:19, 16 November 2007 (UTC)
Hello. Unfortunately, my experience shows a different tendency; there are hundreds of dead wikis that were created before the policy was implemented. —{admin} Pathoschild 19:19:59, 19 November 2007 (UTC)
Hello Pathoschild. Please give Lower Sorbian Wikipedia a chance. The interface is (escept of some current temporary variations) completely translated. Shall that have been in vain? Two people Nepl1 and Pe7er can now edit in the Lower Sorbian wp itself because they don't need pay attention to the translation of the interface any more. Besides, your table above is obsolete. Since November 6th are further edits. That's a Wikipedia for an ethnic minority, you can't compare it with such wp like English or German. There are official Wp which doesn't even have a completely translated interface and the language is dead. Kind regards, --Michawiki 19:44, 19 November 2007 (UTC)
Another subcommittee member proposed it for approval, with no objections. If all goes well, it will be approved in a week. (Note that this is because all requirements have now been met, not because we're making an exception.) —{admin} Pathoschild 20:16:56, 23 November 2007 (UTC)
Hello Pathoschild. Thank you for your answer. What a good news! I didn't want to to ask you for any exception, I wanted to point out to the pro arguments for an official Lower Sorbian Wikipedia. Kind regards, --Michawiki 22:59, 23 November 2007 (UTC)

Wikipedia Latgalian

Why has the request of opening Latgalian Wikipedia been closed? No ISO code you say? Samogitian language doesn't have one too, however, it has its own Wikipedia. --SpeedKing 15:22, 7 November 2007 (UTC)

Requests predating the language subcommittee were determined by community vote, which were then submitted to Wikimedia developers who arbitrarily created wikis in batches. This caused several problems, such as political repression by out-voting, attempts to falsify votes by creating many accounts per person, empty wikis that even today attract vandalism, spam, and bias, takeover of a small wiki by another language group or a group of friends, and so forth.
The language subcommittee was formed to prevent these problem in future requests; dealing with existing wikis is beyond their current authority (that is up to the community and Board of Trustees). Thus far, no approved wiki has had such issues. —{admin} Pathoschild 20:19:57, 08 November 2007 (UTC)

Wikipedia Seri

Might I suggest having people check the Seri Test-WP for validity of the language? I don't know Seri myself, but I am very suspicious of their Wiki. I was initially very pleased that the Seri, who have proven over the last centuries to be among the most resilient and fiercely independent of all the indigenous peoples of the Americas, would be among the first truly successful Wikipedias in an American language (all decent-sized current ones are built by non-native speakers, sometimes from dictionaries, or in one case by a supposed "native speaker" using machine translation technology; there are one or two that look hopeful however). This might be difficult to find a confirmed native speaker to check as there are not a lot (the number is growing rapidly however as the Seri rebound again), but surely an expert could be found at UNISON, and if not there, you can contact Mr. Marlett, associated with SIL México as well as the University of North Dakota, who has studied Seri language extensively. unsigned by 70.162.253.223 05:02, 13 November 2007.

Thank you; I'll make sure that we verify the content before it is approved. —{admin} Pathoschild 21:51:39, 13 November 2007 (UTC)
The project is not so active, no activity the last month, please reject it because it's inactive. --Ooswesthoesbes 06:00, 14 November 2007 (UTC)
It might be good content. Looking to http://www.ethnologue.com/ and clicking on Seri (sei) you can see some dictionaries made by mister Steve Marlett. Many words are also in this dictionary, but others aren't. Please note these dictionaries are far from complete, but I can understand it. I'm also creating a dictionary and have just complete 500 words... --Ooswesthoesbes 05:49, 15 November 2007 (UTC)

Language summary template changes

Why did you do this? --OosWesThoesBes 10:29, 25 November 2007 (UTC)

That field was rarely filled correctly and is no longer used; interested users tended to just say so in the discussion, and the subcommittee now analyses test projects directly instead of depending on that list. —{admin} Pathoschild 11:00:48, 25 November 2007 (UTC)
Yes, but it's still not handy. Now there's no list, at the Lozi wiktionary not all editing users have said something on the discussion and the analyses isn't up to date. --OosWesThoesBes 11:06, 25 November 2007 (UTC)
The analysis will definitely be updated before we make any decision on a request. —{admin} Pathoschild 11:16:35, 25 November 2007 (UTC)
Please ask other members of the LangCom if they agree with conditional approval. It will motivate other users with the interface translations. Today we have reached the 100 pages. --OosWesThoesBes 11:22, 25 November 2007 (UTC)

Can you please explain what was the reason for taking away the community field in the template? It was to some extent useful at least to ease the search for new possible contributors of the project. Sura 22:10, 28 November 2007 (UTC)

That field was rarely filled correctly and is no longer used; interested users tended to just say so in the discussion, and the subcommittee now analyses test projects directly instead of depending on that list. You should be able to find the same interested contributors in the discussion. —{admin} Pathoschild 22:47:35, 28 November 2007 (UTC)
I don’t agree with that logic; it is still useful to see who started the proposal, and roughly how many people are interested in joining – even though that is no deciding factor in the request. And I can’t say that I’ve seen many cases of the field being filled in incorrectly. Jon Harald Søby 21:40, 30 November 2007 (UTC)
I've re-added it, since at least some users like it. :) —{admin} Pathoschild 21:54:54, 30 November 2007 (UTC)

Wikipedia Simple German 2

Hi Pathoschild, I have set up a new request for a Simple German Wikipedia (Requests for new languages/Wikipedia Simple German 2). After I had set up my original draft I discovered that there was an earlier request that was closed (Requests for new languages/Wikipedia Simple German). Because I am not sure about the actual reason the request was closed, I haven't made a new entry on Requests for new languages. Mabe you can tell me if a new request is possible? Thanks --Midnight Star

A large number of subdomain requests were closed in late 2006 after the implementation of the language proposal policy (this is explained in the rejection message on Requests for new languages/Wikipedia Simple German). Although you are free to open a new request, it will likely be rejected because it fails the requisites set out by that policy, particularly having it's own ISO 639 code, and sufficient uniqueness that it could not be part of the German Wikipedia. —{admin} Pathoschild 18:46:19, 04 December 2007 (UTC)

Hello Max sonnelid. Please see the language proposal policy for a list of requirements the project must meet before approval. In particular, you must translate the MediaWiki interface into Northern Sami, and have an active editing community (at least three regular editors). If the test project does not yet meet the requirements, you're welcome to continue editing it on the Incubator; all content will be moved to the new wiki when it is approved. —{admin} Pathoschild 20:17:21, 12 December 2007 (UTC)

Broad spam regex

Hi. I went to remove the links you blacklisted and found that other, unrelated links still triggered the blacklist. Specifically, I tried to undo this spam addition on en.wikipedia and found I was unable to save my reversion because a remaining link to the unrelated facel-vega.com site triggered the filter. Open proxy attack on eowiki

Hi Pathoschild. I'm Yekrats, and I'm an admin at the Esperanto Wikipedia.

Last night the Esperanto Wikipedia was attacked on multiple fronts by vandals. A tremendous amount of junk was generated from 121.44.105.216. I've cleaned up his trash for now, but we were also attack on multiple fronts by a bunch of open proxies, which I've also repaired. I have banned all the proxies that attacked us, but I feel like I'm playing a game of en:Whac-A-Mole.

I was wondering: Is there any cross-Wikipedia black-hole list which is being used to weed out abuse by open proxies? If so, could the Esperanto Wikipedia join that and contribute to it? Can you give any advice on how to handle this kind of abuse in the future?

Any help you could provide would be most appreciated. Thanks in advance... -- Scott S. eo:Vikipediisto:Yekrats Yekrats 15:10, 29 October 2007 (UTC)

Hello. The MetaProject on open proxies served exactly that purpose for a time, though it has been inactive recently. I'll try to revive it in the next few weeks with the release of the wiki proxy database. —{admin} Pathoschild 21:37:45, 29 October 2007 (UTC)

Late CheckUser information

Hello Yosri. Your request for CheckUser information has been denied and archived (see result). —{admin} Pathoschild 20:48:51, 10 November 2007 (UTC)

Hello Pathoschild.
My request for CheckUser information is due to heavy vandal, suspected from Indonesia IP, as per listed below, majority have to do with moving pages and blanking it. We have manage to stopped it with our Wikipedia Indonesia counterpart assistant, so there is no need fo usercheck anymore, anyway, it way.. way.. to late. A quick Google check show 14,100 call to vandal Malaysia Wiki by Indonesian hackers. [9]:-

Please explain the situation next time; your request described a single abusive user account. In emergency situations, you can contact stewards directly on the freenode IRC channel #wikimedia-stewardsconnect (web-based IRC client); say "!steward" to notify stewards of an emergency. —{admin} Pathoschild 04:29:48, 13 November 2007 (UTC)

br:Dibar:Wantedpages

I don't know whom to ask this, but you may be able to help me. Wantedpages is not updated anymore on the breton wikipedia since the first of september. What is the problem? It is a very interesting and useful page, so it would be great if it could be updated again as it was before (twice a week at least). Thx!Benoni 18:47, 9 September 2007 (UTC)

It looks like updates to that list have been disabled on all wikis; try asking in the freenode IRC channel #wikimedia-tech. —{admin} Pathoschild 03:45:03, 15 September 2007 (UTC)
Same problems we've got on the incubator and li.wikt. I can't open that channel. --OosWesThoesBes 12:56, 6 October 2007 (UTC)
Yes, it looks like it was disabled globally; see above. —{admin} Pathoschild 14:52:38, 06 October 2007 (UTC)
As said above (but not clear) I can't open IRC. --OosWesThoesBes 15:01, 6 October 2007 (UTC)
Oh, I misunderstood. You need an IRC client, or you can use an online client like CGIIRC. —{admin} Pathoschild 15:05:01, 06 October 2007 (UTC)
I think I don't understand how it works... --OosWesThoesBes 15:12, 6 October 2007 (UTC)
  1. Type "Ooswesthoesbes" in the nickname field;
  2. Select "#wikimedia-tech" in the channel drop-down menu;
  3. Click "Login".
  4. Wait for it to finish loading (it may take a little while). It is finished when there is a list of user names in the right-side box, and a thin long empty box at the bottom.
  5. Type what you want to say in the bottom box and press the "Enter" key.
Everything you and others say will appear in the big center box. It might take a while to get an answer; be patient. :) —{admin} Pathoschild 15:43:05, 06 October 2007 (UTC)
Ok, I've done. I'll wait. Thanks for the explanation :) --OosWesThoesBes 15:51, 6 October 2007 (UTC)

our only active sysop rony has done it before and Danny took away his sysop rights (and since many other stewards and sysops blocked ips and names because of this offense) only to get in again and elect himself with the help of a steward called efeitsanders who forced corrupt elections that everybody can vote even if the name isn't active in years so a check user tool could not vouch for the results if they wasn't indeed sockpupets. since then i warn this so called sysop he should delete the privacy's and he ignores me. i already connected curry bass in the wiki office numerous times he isn't of much help i would like to thank u for involving yourself in this. to finely end this terror--???? 12:21, 14 November 2007 (UTC)

OTRS Enquiry

Hi Pathoschild,

I saw you listed on the OTRS page. I am an administrator over at Wikibooks and I was wondering if you could answer a question that i need answering. The book b:The Guide for Electronic Theses and Dissertations is not currenly licensed under the GFDL, it is copyrighted. The owners have expressed an interest in allowing the book to be used on wikibooks. However, they are not entirely sure how to do this.

Upon holding conversations with other user's and contributors to the wikimedia projects, I am under the impression that there are two key ways of making this happen. The first involves the copyright holder altering the copyright notice on their website, the other involves the OTRS system, through the permissions channel. However, i am not familiar with the OTRS system and before i can explain how it works to the copyright owner, I need to know myself.

Would the copyright owner need to send an email directly to the OTRS channel, or could correspondance be forwarded from myself? What exactly needs to be sent in the email outlining permission? Where exactly would permission need to be sent? etc...

If you could please mull over these questions and get back to me as soon as possible, it would be greatly appreciated.

Regards, Urbane 12:53, 29 October 2007 (UTC)

Hello Urbane. Because Wikibooks allows redistribution under the GNU Free Documentation License, the license must allow several freedoms for anyone else as well: to be freely viewed, used, distributed, modified, and exploited with no limits beyond those defined in the GFDL (see foundation:Licensing policy). There are many licenses that are compatible with the Foundation's licensing policy, but is much simpler to just ask that the work be released under the GNU Free Documentation License. It is not enough for the copyright holder to "allow use on Wikibooks".
With regards to the email, we need two things:
  1. A clear and unambiguous copyright release. For example, "I hereby release the book 'The Guide for Electronic Theses and Dissertations' under the GNU Free Documentation License with the terms used by the Wikimedia Foundation."
  2. Some sort of proof that the copyright release is valid. Any method that proves that they are really the copyright holder and are releasing the work under a compatible license is good. Common possibilities include:
    • an appropriate release on an official website belonging to the copyright holder (as you've mentioned);
    • an appropriate release from an address associated with such a website (this must be received directly, not forwarded);
    • an appropriate release through a verifiable and reliable lawyer.
I'm sorry if this seems complicated, but the OTRS permissions archive is used for legal purposes and so must be thorough. If we need any additional information, we'll respond to the emailer directly. :) —{admin} Pathoschild 20:46:02, 29 October 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply, that clears a lot up.  :) Urbane 19:42, 31 October 2007 (UTC)

Can you take a look at Stewards/elections 2007/statements/CandidateTemplate? I am trying to use Template:Error:not_substituted but it did not work for me, perhaps because this is not a template? Or perhaps because I wasn't passing the correct parameter to it? It requires a double colon after subst to substitute right, maybe that is what is throwing it off? Thanks! If you have LOADS of time maybe the template could use some usage guideish stuff somewhere? Thanks for that too! ++Lar: t/c 13:04, 12 November 2007 (UTC)

I fixed Stewards/elections 2007/statements/CandidateTemplate and wrote some documentation on Template:Error:not substituted. —{admin} Pathoschild 20:54:28, 12 November 2007 (UTC)
See the talk, Hillgentleman spotted something that might be a concern in how you changed his fix. Thanks though! ++Lar: t/c
Yes, that is a known limitation. As far as I know, there's no way to simultaneously check if the page is substituted, and substitute the substitution check. —{admin} Pathoschild 21:17:17, 12 November 2007 (UTC)

re: Language box placement

Hello Anonymous Dissident. I see you moved the language box on Stewards below the note about the upcoming election. I think the language box should always be the first element on a page to improve accessibility for non-English readers. The reader should ideally be able to select his preferred language first, then read the translated notice.

Do you object to moving the language box back to the top? If necessary, the line about the upcoming elections can be emphasized a little more (such as with a border or bold text). —{admin} Pathoschild 15:49:31, 13 November 2007 (UTC)

I don't mind at all. Your idea seems very reasonable; I only moved it because I see it as that ephemeral messages should entirely precede the everlasting body of content. I really don't mind either way. Regards, --Anonymous DissidentTalk 20:41, 13 November 2007 (UTC)
Okay, I'll move it back to the top. :) —{admin} Pathoschild 21:54:07, 13 November 2007 (UTC)
Ok, thanks. --Anonymous DissidentTalk 05:19, 14 November 2007 (UTC)

The comment on the site request concerns the specific qualifier used in the "Severity" field. Please direct all complaints about the delay to #wikimedia-techconnect, since it's out of my control beyond my occasional reminder. I'm not a member of the Wolof Wikipedia community, so there's no reason for me to express my opinion in local elections. —{admin} Pathoschild 19:28:25, 19 November 2007 (UTC)

Review maybe

Hi - I came across these contributions to a set of puppet accounts you blocked a while back. The edits were from an open proxy which is what alerted me (unblocked as yet but that can be done later) and I have no idea if they are valid and/or of interest. English Wikipedia

I was blocked on the english wikipedia but am allowed to be unblocked if I can prove I'm a sysop on other metawiki projects. What type of proof do you want? Zalgt 19:09, 23 November 2007 (UTC)

Please ask the administrators on w:User talk:Zalgt. If your user name is Zalgt on all wikis, you are not. —{admin} Pathoschild 20:09:12, 23 November 2007 (UTC)

I would prefer to not specify but if there is no other means i will. Are there any other methods to prove if not I will supply my user name. Zalgt 20:28, 23 November 2007 (UTC)
No, there's no way to prove you're an administrator without pointing to a user account with administrator access. —{admin} Pathoschild 20:32:57, 23 November 2007 (UTC)
Z and a few others.Zalgt 20:34, 23 November 2007 (UTC)

As explained on w:User talk:Zalgt, please email Unblock-l to discuss further. —{admin} Pathoschild 21:07:30, 23 November 2007 (UTC)
The block was unjustified in the first place. If i think that it will accomplish anything I will prove it. Zalgt 21:13, 23 November 2007 (UTC)

I understand your revert, but the [edit] section in the talk pages edits the template:welcome, not the talk page. Can you solve this? Cheers, Slade ? 00:29, 26 November 2007 (UTC)

Yes; the template should be substituted with "{{subst:welcome}}", so that the edit link will edit the section on the user's talk page. —{admin} Pathoschild 00:31:56, 26 November 2007 (UTC)
It's too obvious... sometimes, I forgot that I should use the subst:! But, this is correct? Slade ? 00:48, 26 November 2007 (UTC)

Chavacano de Zamboanga Wikipedia

Hello. Would you please help us. I have several questions and Im getting frustrated coz I cant find help over at meta. I cant get any help from any steward, beureacrat or admin. At metapub, I was asked to find a developer whom I can ask these questions.

I would like to know exactly when was the exact date Meta approved the creation of Chavacano Wikipedia http://cbk-zam.wikipedia.org. I have searched at the archives but I just really cannot determine what specific date it was approved for its creation.

When Chavacano wikipedia started last year, I didnt know how to go about translating the interface and the language file(?). I was just told by an admin of Spanish wikipedia (http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Taichi) to ask for admin permission and translate the messages here:

http://cbk-zam.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Allmessages

After I got the adminship, I translated most of the messages. The interface was indeed translated, but was I on the right track? I noticed a newly created wikipedia http://bcl.wikipedia.org did not translate its

http://bcl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Allmessages

but its interface is translated! So how did it happen?

Another question is, how come cbk-zam or Chavacano is not an option in the language preference of a user in another wikipedia? For example, at the English Wikipedia or here in Meta, if you go to your user preferences, Chavacano is not included as an option for the language interface. How do we make cbk-zam a part of a user language option? In cbk-zam.wikipedia.org, cbk-zam is there as an option, but not in other wikis.

Also, I would like to know where I can have the wikimedia configure the user preference in our Chavacano wikipedia. Whenever we configure the language option in our user preferences in http://cbk-zam.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Preferences cbk-zam is listed as cbk-zam - cbk-zam which is wrong. It should be cbk-zam - Chavacano de Zamboanga. How do I do the correction? I am the sysop of cbk-zam.wikipedia.org. And finally, where will I do the necessary translation of the wikipedia donation to Chavacano that appears on every page? Thanks. I would really appreciate if anyone can help us. Thanks. --Weekeejames 13:59, 8 December 2007 (UTC)

Hello Weekeejames. Interface translations should be done on the translatewiki, and they'll be added directly to MediaWiki's translation files. "Special:Allmessages" should no longer be used for translations (since at least 2005), only for customizing the messages for a specific wiki. This is the reason Chavacano is not available as an option in other wikis— the Chavacano Wikipedia is using an English interface customized with Chavacano.
You will need to import the Chavacano translations into the translatewiki, and generalize them (make them apply to any wiki, ie remove Wikipedia-specific content like links to Chavacano Wikipedia policies). Contact Nikerabbit if you're interested in doing that. If they're already generalized, Nikerabbit can export them directly to the MediaWiki files from the Chavacano Wikipedia. He can also correct the language name while exporting the translations.
To help translate the donation box, please see Fundraising 2007#Pages_to_be_translated.
Determining the date of creation of the Chavacano Wikipedia is difficult. I know it was created sometime between 17 June 2006 (the date of the last vote on Requests for new languages/Wikipedia Chavacano) and 07 January 2007 (when the subcommittee merged it into the new process). cbk-zam:Special:Statistics seems to say 02 October 2006, which would fit. —{admin} Pathoschild 17:56:21, 11 December 2007 (UTC)

Huge problem

In fi.wikipedia.org couple admins (w:fi:User:Joonasl and w:fi:User:MikkoM) have added Google analytics on every pageload (here). That is really annoinning and it has to be against to Wikimedia's privacy rules. There is no need for that. Please can you or somebody do something? --Anonacco 20:27, 10 December 2007 (UTC)

Blacklisting

Hi you blaclisted www.kreuz.net in July 2006. I am trying to get it unblacklisted simply because it is the only source for some important material for the wikipedia article on Pius Ncube, and I can't undersatnd why it was blacklisted. In fact I didn't know until then that Wikipedia was routinely blacklisting sites. I've found it very frustrating trying to find out why it was blacklisted and by whom. I have pinned down the admin to you but can you tell me why and in future how I can simply find out the reasons for a site being blacklisted? Thanks. Dbdb 02:23, 11 December 2007 (UTC)

Hello Dbdb. For more information on why it was added, see the original proposal (June 2006). You can find more information on this and other blacklisted domains using the counterspam archive search tool. You can propose its removal from the blacklist on Talk:Spam blacklist. —{admin} Pathoschild 15:51:52, 11 December 2007 (UTC)

Unarchival

Because the situation was still being discussed, it wasn't resolved, but nor was it an un-resolvable discussion. It was a choice of either unarchiving it, or just kickstarting the conversation all over again - this seemed the more efficient choice. weird arrow problem

IP address blocking

On Wikipedia, my school's IP address is blocked because people at my school were probably vandalizing. I know I can log in and still edit. I also noticed that you can just create and account even though the IP address is blocked. This is probably the same on Wikisource but my school's IP wasn't blocked yet. I tried it and I was able to edit so the block was basically useless. Is there a way to make it so that you can only log in but not create a new account on blocked IP address?

Also, do we need to wait for an attack from an IP or can you request an IP address blocked before vandals use it to destroy other people's hard work?

(If you could reply on my talk page that would help)

Thanks, Skunkmaster IV 22:35, 11 September 2007 (UTC)

Hello. Yes, we can block account creation as well as editing. We often leave account creation open in cases of anonymous vandalism because this lets good editors edit, while slowing down bad editors and making it even easier to roll back their edits.
To prevent unnecessary inconvenience to good editors (and work for administrators), we usually don't block IP addresses unless we expect vandalism from them on this wiki. There's no way to destroy anyone's work, since any edit can easily be reverted.—{admin} Pathoschild 22:55:45, 11 September 2007 (UTC)
I forgot about the reverting thing. And I didn't know a about the rollback thingy, so thanks for the info! --Skunkmaster IV 00:08, 13 September 2007 (UTC)

Hi Pathoschild, is it possible to change the banner a little? [16] It is a bit too eye catching, IMHO. Regards, Cygnis insignis 02:25, 12 September 2007 (UTC)

It's meant to be; there should be virtually no discussion on that page. —{admin} Pathoschild 04:22:42, 12 September 2007 (UTC)
I made a change anyway. Could you delete the evidence of my silliness, I moved something to the wrong name: redirect. Regards, Cygnis insignis 17:26, 30 September 2007 (UTC)

Thanks. I do think the amount of effort you put into wikisource is commendable. I do have a problem with your approach sometimes, I will hazard a guess that you don't give a shit about that. A regretable, but not uncommon, attribute in an sysop. It may bring you trouble, it is just the reaction some people want. Anyway, I wont be contributing to the discussions here anymore, I will just get on with the tasks I have assigned myself - if that. Cygnis insignis 19:55, 30 September 2007 (UTC)
You're welcome to discuss any problems with me you may have. I'm not entirely sure what led to this reaction; is it entirely related to the banner, or something else? —{admin} Pathoschild 23:50:13, 30 September 2007 (UTC)

CotW

I can't help but notice that you're a past editor of Author:Richard Francis Burton - given his fascinating place in literature and knowledge of "exotic" lands at a time when little was known outside of the British Empire, he was chosen as this week's Wikisource:Collaboration of the Week. I was hoping to convince you to spend a little time improving Wikisource's coverage of his historical contributions. If you're stuck for ideas, I could certainly use help formatting (especially footnotes!) the Personal Narrative of a Pilgrimage to Al Madinah and Meccah over the next day or two. Yup, "loue" is frequently used in Chaucer's era as "love". I'm sorry if I do come off as a dick btw, "I took courses devoted to studying Chaucer in University and thus am a snob". :) Sherurcij Collaboration of the Week: Author:Richard Francis Burton 18:08, 25 September 2007 (UTC)

inclusion

Hi. If I can make a point by way of illustration; this satifies the criteria for inclusion, but this self publication would not. I do not think these things are clearcut, some judgement and ethics need to be applied. Just my opinion and viewpoint. Thanks for the previous assistance, regards also. "The Marsden translation"

There's no such thing (yet). Most English language imprints purport to be such. But I have not even been able to tell (yet) if it's an imprint of 1923, 1922, 1921, or 1920. I don't think you'll be able either - unless you go to the research libraries all over the Western World.

Best to you, --Ludvikus 14:41, 28 September 2007 (UTC)

Wikipedia's article states that:
The most widespread English translation of the Protocols is credited to a British correspondent for The Morning Post in Russia, Victor E. Marsden, who was imprisoned by the Bolsheviks in the Peter and Paul Fortress, subsequently released, and returned to England. Marsden, prior to his death on October 28, 1920, had allegedly translated Chapter XII of Nilus's 1905 book on the coming of the Anti-Christ, a copy of which was at hand in the British Museum. His name does not appear in the first British imprint, issued by Eyre & Spottiswoode Ltd., nor in the second, issued by The Britons. It only first pops up in the edition issued one or two years later, in the imprint issued by the Britons Publishing Society.
If I understand correctly, chapter XII of Nilus' 1905 book was the Protocols text. The translation is apparently uncredited in the first two editions, but there doesn't seem to be any other possible translators. This fact can be mentioned in the header notes, but the translation itself fits all of our inclusion guidelines (being widely published in the US before 1920). —{admin} Pathoschild 14:56:03, 28 September 2007 (UTC)
Thanks. It's good not to be talking to the wall. I'm still learning Wikisource style. So I find it better to say this here now after your edit for your valuable input:
Our tract also falls under the Translation category regarding its Inclusion in Wikisource. And it clearly does not comply with that requirement, which is the following:
For translations, the first priority at Wikisource is the contribution of previously published, public domain translations. However, in light of the fact that there are countless source texts published in other languages that might never be translated otherwise, plus the fact that new, complementary translations can improve on existing ones in many ways, Wikisource also allows user-created wiki translations.
Our source so far is neither. It's merely an editing (linking, etc.) by one Wikisource editor of the version of the Church of True Israel. If we allow that we open the door to anyone who creates a unique Username, gets a site on the Web, and publishes, whatever, and gets some editor to post bit here. No one at Wikisource wants that, right?
PS: I've just edited the Article at Wikipedia to reflect more accurately what vwe know of Marsden and the translations that bear his name. Please reconsider the consequences of my change. --Ludvikus 15:36, 28 September 2007 (UTC)
The Church of True Israel might be hosting a legitimate published translation, in which case it's acceptable. That's what I'll be trying to determine later today. If it's not, I'll replace it.
While the text should be exactly what was published (including errors), wikilinks are encouraged to provide contextual information or define difficult concepts. For example, the phrase the Duke of York might be linked to the article on James II of England, if the Duke of York specifically referred to the person holding that position at the time the work was published. —{admin} Pathoschild 16:28:49, 28 September 2007 (UTC)
I've done lots of work on "The Protocols" at Wikipedia, including the Template: w:Template:"The Protocols" since last time I was here. I think it might prove useful to you all as you make your evaluations here. --Ludvikus 16:49, 30 September 2007 (UTC)
