User talk:Rich Farmbrough/Gender balance

Note[edit]

I prefer to use the F/M ratio rather than F/(F+M). The reason is clear in the following graph: linear progress is represented linearly.

Misleading[edit]

These graphs keep being misused/misunderstood and that's very sad. I would suggest a retraction or at very least a fix of the "trend" line, which should only start in late 2011 when mw:MediaWiki 1.18 was introduced. Alternatively, to reduce noise on the users registered before MediaWiki 1.18, you'd need an activity threshold. (But there's really no reason at all for an English-speaking user to set their gender preference, so merely being active after it was introduced is no guarantee that older users would have as strong an incentive to set it as those who have just registered and find the option in the preferences or even earlier in the registration process.)
