Capacity Exchange: New Design, Features & Ways to Connect!

Our platform has undergone several updates and has a new design and brand-new features available. We would like to invite you to explore the tool and give your feedback to help us make it even better.

Together with Language Diversity Hub, the Capacity Exchange (CapX) team will host its first Translation Marathon dedicated to ensuring linguistic equity in access to this amazing tool aimed to connect Wikimedians.
If you enjoy contributing to Wikimedia projects through translating and adapting content into different languages, this event is for you! Join us in the celebration of the multilingual spirit of the Wikimedia Movement at an event where communities that contribute in diverse languages will be able to share local knowledge and collaborate across borders.

Hello again.  So, first, a bit of background, as I don't know how familiar you are with this side of our work: we've worked with a number of GLAM organisations over the years, advocating for, amongst other things, more Wiki-appropriate licensing on images, and working with organisations to understand and hopefully overcome barriers to openness in this respect.  These barriers remain a concern for a lot of the UK GLAM sector, not least as illustrated by Dr Andrea Wallace's report "A Culture of Copyright"  https://www.nationalcollection.org.uk/events/news/culture-copyright-scoping-study-open-access-digital-cultural-heritage-collections-uk which was part of the Towards a National Collection project.  

Each Residency is different, with outcomes and activities designed to fall in the space where the strategic objectives of WMUK and of the host organisation meet - sometimes this is around licensing, sometimes this is around community outreach, sometimes they're more Wikipedia-focussed, sometimes a different project, and on one occasion language-based.  (again, I'm mentioning this just as I'm not sure how familiar you are with this part of our work).  Both of my own residencies, for example (Museums Galleries Scotland and the Scottish Library and Information Council) were focussed more on sector-wide advocacy and training than content release, although there was a small portion of the latter in both.  

We had two residencies with the Science Museum - one was before my Wiki-time so I needed to look it up - details of the first can be found here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:GLAM/Natural_History_Museum_and_Science_Museum (2013-2014, Science Museum & Natural History Museum), and the second here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:GLAM/Science_Museum (2020-2022)  One of the achievements of both were image releases and advocacy around licensing.  The latter SMG residency achieved an image release of 838 images - which can be seen in this category: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Images_from_SMG_Wikimedian_in_Residence_2020, and which, building on conversations and the work and pilot releases of the first residency, was the result of a number of involved discussions around risk, copyright accuracy, metadata availability, workflow, and of course suitability for and the benefits of Wiki-compatible licensing.  Those images still get pageviews of anywhere between 150k - 350k per month.  The latter residency also looked at ways in which SMG material could help to fill specific gaps on Wikipedia, for example around wider representation within STEM topics, as well as engaging with Wikidata.
