Wikimedians of Kerala - October 2024 Newsletter

- User group news
- On 12th Oct 2024, we had our user group monthly meeting held online at Google meet. 17 members attended the meeting.
- User:Gnoeee started the meeting welcoming everyone and shared the agenda for this months meetup as listed in the event page.
- User:Gnoeee shared the updates about Wiki Loves Onam campaign, highlighting that over 4,000 files were uploaded by more than 100 participants between September 1st and 30th.
- User:VSj (WMF) shared the updates about Sancharam project. During the discussion, participants actively contributed by sharing valuable feedback and raising questions to clarify specific aspects of the initiative. Challenges were noted, including technical support for uploading, handling licenses, and managing the content.
- User:Ranjithsiji shared an update on organizing Wikidata birthday with a community gathering and workshop in Kerala, with the potential to collaborate with the OpenStreetMap (OSM) community for greater engagement and shared learning opportunities.
- User:Gnoeee shared an update on Wikidata's 12th Birthday celebrations led by the Wikimedians of Kerala UG on Wikidata Oct 13th-19th. One week focusing on improving hospital and health center data.
- User:Manojk shared an update on the WikiConference Kerala that is planned to be hosted at Thrissur during the month of December. More details will be shared soon. Also shared update on up-coming Malayalam Wikisource activities.
- During the discussion, participants explored the idea to submit a bid for hosting the WCI 2025 in Kerala. The participants expressed their support for the idea, and decided to form a dedicated group was to work on the bid proposal and submit the bid for Kochi location.

- User:Athulvis and User:Jameela P. got selection to attend Train-the-Trainer (TTT) program that is being hosted at Bhubaneswar, Odisha.
- User:Gnoeee has received an invitation from the WikiArabia Conference team to attend the conference and to organize an OpenRefine workshop during the conference in Oman.

- On 9th Nov 2024, we had our user group monthly meeting held online at Google meet. 15 members attended the meeting.
- User:Gnoeee started the meeting welcoming everyone to the meeting and shared the agenda for this months meetup.
- User:Gnoeee shared the updates about Wiki Loves Onam Video documentation, that features a collection of 10 videos documented in Commons that capture key events and customs associated with the festival.
- User Gnoeee shared the update about the selection of the Kochi venue for the WikiConference India 2025 bid proposal submitted by the User Group.
- User:Irvin calicut shared an update of Wiki Loves Birds in India photography campaign dedicated to celebrating and documenting the remarkable avian biodiversity across India.
- User:Gnoeee shared his experience participating in WikiArabia 2024 and providing training on OpenRefine to the participants. He also shared an update on his discussion with User:VSj (WMF) during the event about the Sancharam project.
- User:Akhilan shared the update on പള്ളിക്കൂടത്തിലേക്ക് വീണ്ടും (Back to School) campaign which focus to digitize old Malayalam textbooks in Malayalam Wikisource. Members User:Tonynirappathu and User:Manoj also part of the discussion of the project.
- User:Ranjithsiji and User:Gnoeee shared the update on celebrating Wikidata's 12th Birthday in collabration with OSM community during SoTM Kerala 2024 event.
- User:Athulvis shared his experience in attending TTT 2024 at Bhubaneswar.
- User:Ranjithsiji and User:Gnoeee shared the update on submitting Grant proposal for organsing User group events and collabrating with other communities.

- Shared the updates about WCK 2024 tha was organised on 28th Dec. Shared update about the discussions happened in the UG's AGM and published report.
- Shared the updates about WCI 2025 that will be organised at Kochi in 2025. Shared the dicussion happened during UG's AGM meeting held on 28th Dec.
- The My Village 2024 Edit-a-thon has been organised in Malayalam Wikipedia. 114 articles was created.
- Shared update about Wiki Loves Birds India 2024 campaign. Preliminary judgement has been completed. and final judging process going on.
- User:Gnoeee shared updates about UG's initial discusssion about hosting Wikimania 2027 in India. Wikimania never happened in South Asia. So UG has taken initative to start the discussion and to submit the bid. The bid has been submitted on Wikimania portal on 27th Jan 2025.
- User:Akbarali shared update about Wiki Loves Ramadan campaign. Erfan and Muhammed Yaseen shared their interest in taking up the initiative. (Read more...)

- Jinoy shared updates about Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos 2025 (WPWP) event and shared the plans about conducting a regional level program in association with WPWP.
- Manoj shared updates about Wiki Loves Earth in India competition. Around 4000 photos have been uploaded during the time of call and Manoj shared plans to socialize by sending mails on the same for better reach.
- Jinoy shared that, following an email from IMUG on June 5, 2025, requesting support and mentorship for a hackathon in Kochi (July 25–27, 2025), the update was communicated through community channels and included in the June newsletter. During this call, he invited inputs from UG members.
- Shaji shared updates on his work related to a template to store books in pdf format.

- Shared the update about the eligibility of UG to take part in the shortlisting process for the WMF Board of Trustees 2025 Election. Jinoy has been nominated as the group’s representative voter.
- Updates on the Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos (WPWP) 2025 campaign on Malayalam Wikipedia. Hashtag #WPWPINKL is using to track the contributions.
- Ranjithsiji shared that Wiki Loves Earth 2025 in India is being organized again after 2017, with international team support.
- Jinoy shared the idea of organising the Wiki Loves Onam 2025 campaign this year with the support of UG members and the community. Plans include a longer campaign, improving Onam-related articles and media files.
- User group members will be participating in Wikimania 2025 at Nairobi. Four posters (UG + individual) from Kerala are selected. Feedback from last year on proper image licensing has been addressed.
- New member of UG, Kamarudheenelankur shared about the plan to take photos of bus stops at Malappuram and uploads to Commons.
- Members suggested forming a review committee for handling UG assets. Jinoy shared that a discussion will be started on the criteria for using UG assets.
- Akbarali suggested preparing reports in Malayalam. Volunteers are welcome to help with translations. (read more...)

- Ranjithsiji initiated discussions on the need to apply for the Annual General Support Fund (GSF). The deadline for submission is 5th September 2025.
- Ranjith, Manoj, Jinoy, Tony shared the update about the received. Members emphasized finalizing pending support reports before proceeding with the new application.
- Jinoy presented a draft policy for handling User Group assets. Members are invited to provide feedback and suggestions on the talk page or on the document.
- Updates on ongoing campaigns Wiki Loves Onam 2025 and Wikipedia Pages Wanting Photos 2025 were shared.
- Ranjithsiji announced that the proposal for WikiConference India 2026 will be submitted in September and plans are underway to organize WikiConference Kerala in December 2025.
- Vijayan V K proposed starting a campaign to create school articles from SchoolWiki to Malayalam Wikipedia, with a focus on uploading at least one photo for each school.
- Participants (Manoj, Ranjith, Jinoy and Akbarali who participated the meeting) who attended Wikimania 2025 shared their experiences.
- Discussions also touched upon issues in Malayalam Wiktionary’s IPA module, possible solutions for Commons uploads.

We’re excited to invite you to an inspiring global virtual gathering: the first Capacity Exchange Translat-a-thon.
Together with Language Diversity Hub, the Capacity Exchange (CapX) team will host its first Translation Marathon dedicated to ensuring linguistic equity in access to this amazing tool aimed to connect Wikimedians.
If you enjoy contributing to Wikimedia projects through translating and adapting content into different languages, this event is for you! Join us in the celebration of the multilingual spirit of the Wikimedia Movement at an event where communities that contribute in diverse languages will be able to share local knowledge and collaborate across borders.

If you can’t join the live event, you can still contribute to the translations! Edits will be counted for two weeks, until December 20th. And everyone who participates will receive a special badge to display on their CapX profiles.

- On 25th October 2025, we held our user group’s monthly meeting online via Google Meet. Seventeen members attended and Everyone was welcomed to the meeting. The agenda for the meeting was shared by Ranjithsiji.
- Manoj K and Irvin shared updates about the Wiki Loves Birds campaign in India 2025.
- Jinoy shared the idea behind the anniversary tool and wished Vijayanrajapuram and Erfanebrahimsait on their first edit on Commons and Malayalam Wikipedia.
- Ranjith and Manoj shared an update WikiConference Kerala 2025. Planning to organise the event on the 20th and 21st December in Thrissur.
