Hello Snowolf! On behalf of the stewards' election committee, congratulations on your appointment as a steward! Your permissions have now been set and you are able to start the work.

You have been added to the list of stewards and the stewards' chart. Please take a moment to check that your details are accurate and update them if necessary. In addition, please subscribe to checkuser-l, the private mailing list for Wikimedia checkusers, and stewards-l, the private list for stewards. In addition, you will be given access to the related private wikis, one for checkusers and the other solely for stewards, details of which will be provided.

If you use IRC, please contact an operator for access to #wikimedia-checkuser and #wikimedia-privacy. Please also idle in #wikimedia-stewards when you are available for duty.

Best of luck with your new tools; I am sure you will do a fantastic job. Please remember that your fellow stewards are always available if you need a second opinion, either via the mailing list or on IRC.

An offering for our new administrator from your comrades... (our budget is smaller than Commons)
Snowolf, congratulations! You now have the rights of administrator on Meta. Please take a moment to read the Meta:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Meta:Requests for help from a sysop or bureaucrat, and Meta:Requests for deletion, but also Talk:Spam blacklist and Talk:Interwiki map), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings, or modifications of protected pages. The majority of the actions of administrators can be reversed by the other admins, except for history merges which must thus be treated with particular care.

A tip: add this page Meta:Administrators' discussion index to your watchlist, it tracks the latest activity to various sections of many of the important pages.

Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-admin @ irc.freenode.net. You may find Commons:Guide to adminship to be useful reading although it doesn't always completely apply here at Meta.

Please also check or add your entry to Meta:Administrators#List of administrators and the Template:List of administrators.

I just found out by chance that I've been blocked indefinitely on Hindu wikipedia because of an "abusive user name" by you. Assuming that you did this as a global steward on request by the local community, I'd like to know more about details - there was no message on my talk page there and I can find no request on either Meta or your :hi talk page. If there was a community discussion, I wouldn't even know where to start looking for it among all those exotic Hindu characters. Could you please check in case it was a mistake? If nothing else, it looks bad in global account overviews. Thanks, — Yerpo Eh? 10:26, 14 March 2012 (UTC)

That's really weird. Trying to figure out why exactly that happened but in the meantime I've unblocked you as it's clearly a mistake. Snowolf How can I help? 19:08, 14 March 2012 (UTC)
Apparently it's a known and already reported bug. You were not the intended target of the global lock + suppression, a number of accounts with abusive usernames was. How on earth it ended up with you and a number of other local accounts getting suppressed, I really can't understand it, but it seems it's a bug. I've unsuppressed and unblocked the account, thank you so much for bringing the matter to my attention, as it not only got me to reverse the mistake on your account but also on a few others who were equally affected. Snowolf How can I help? 20:48, 14 March 2012 (UTC)
No problem, thanks for your response. I was actually more worried that my username reminds people there of some Hindu demon or swear word. — Yerpo Eh? 07:33, 15 March 2012 (UTC)

RFC/User rights on hi wiki[edit]

Hi, in view of this RFC, some of my rights were also removed from sa.wiki and hi.wikt, kindly restore them as this RFC is over--Mayur (talkEmail) 17:34, 20 March 2012 (UTC)

I have restored your sysop flag on sawiki and hiwikt. I did not restore the 'crat flag on hiwikt. The project has no active admins, let alone 'crats and the circumstances of the hiwiki situation and RfC clearly show it's not wise to re-grant this flag, especially given there are no active admins there so there's no need for it in any case. Yes, to email somebody you need to have an email address listed on your wiki account and authenticated, add one and authenticate it and it will work. As I wrote earlier, I cannot unblock you because I'm both not familiar with your situation and because the block was based on private informations from the Checkuser tool to which I am not privy to. If you want to appeal your block, email MuZemike thru the procedure listed above, but as it stands, en:WP:CIR issues starts to be pretty evident. Snowolf How can I help? 13:05, 22 March 2012 (UTC)
But Many admins have unblocked this you can see the Block log when can't you unblock??? The preceding unsigned comment was added by Ali3452 (talk • contribs) 13:09, 22 March 2012‎ (UTC).
There's not a single unblock there. And the fact that you seem unable to understand that you have to email MuZemike for a unblock which will never happen is only further proof of major en:WP:CIR issues. You are clearly not suited to contribute to the English Wikipedia, as your extensive pattern of abuse, block evasion and your inability to listen to simple instructions such as on here show. Please direct all further queries to en:Special:EmailUser/MuZemike as he's the blocking Checkuser. Regards, Snowolf How can I help? 13:12, 22 March 2012 (UTC)

About Saint Johann adminship @ lez-wiki[edit]

The following discussion is marked as answered (replied). If you have a new comment, add it just below the box.

Hello. I would like to ask you to give the flag a technical administrator to Saint Johann. You took into account only the number of votes, but it better to see argumentation. First of all, see the last vote of user VasilievVV - it was only his editing at the project and I do not know how he could know that would benefit to the project, better than permanent users in the project. And let I'll translate some opinions about this candidate from this vote page:

Opinion 1 (from Migraghvi, recently elected Administrator):

Translate: User St.Johann definitely needs for this project, as I see by his work, he well understands in Wiki programming. So I think all the arguments against him irrelevant. And I encourage those who voted against him, transfer their votes to (section) "pro". Personally, if I become the administrator, I can not coordinate the technical parameters as it can St.Johann. Mainly I will coordinate work for writing articles, taking into account the norms of Lezghian language. And I do not see anybody who can so effectively use the wiki-markup language, as it does St.Johann. Migraghvi (Talk) 20:39, 31 March 2012 (MSK)

Opinion 2 (from User from Dag, recently elected Administrator): (I removed the discussion about another candidate) User from Dag (обсуждение) 13:09, 30 Ибне 2012 (MSK)

Translate: ...Again, to avoid any kind of conflicts and troubles it would be better if the technical support will be provided by totally neutral user as St.Johann. Our goal with you - to make high-quality database of Wikipedia, it's not a platform for promote your interests. User from Dag (Talk) 13:09, 30 March 2012 (MSK)

Also, see user's Ontoi contributions - he just voting here and even do not make edits in other articles. User Bouron also did only one edit as VasilievVV. So I ask to give technical admin Flag to user Saint Johann under my responsibility and responsibility of users Migraghvi and User from Dag.--Soul Train (talk) 09:18, 5 April 2012 (UTC)

Couple of things to clear up: first, there's no such thing as a flag of "technical administrator". All administrators are the same flag-wise (temporary admin wasn't specifically requested and is voted on by the community regardless in the same manner, just requires less overall participation) and in the absence of a peculiar local policy, also they're all equal policy-wise; also, I did read all the rationales for support and opposes, I didn't simply "count the votes", however, missing local policies establishing a necessary amount of contributions, I am bound by what I find on the page, namely a strong opposition by a significant number of users mainly motivated by the fact that the user doesn't speak the language. Whether that should or shouldn't be a concern is not up to me to decide. To be blunt, there's no reason to disregard votes from new contributor on a brand new project and there's no basis in policy to weight user's votes differently. As long as the arguments are somewhat sane, if there's clearly no consensus to promote, my hands are tied. Snowolf How can I help? 09:39, 5 April 2012 (UTC)
Formally you are right, but the facts are: 1. User LNSA is the only user with contributions, but he is the author of scandal-known category Tslapashstan and (as I think) may be puppet of Lezgistxa, well, I can say that he is vandal too, as Lezgistxa. But even such a radical user as Lezgistxa, who have conflicts with Saint Johann, removed his vote to section "neutral" ("I change my position to this user and to abstain for this candidate"). 2. VasilievVV and Bouron make only one edit each. Who are all these people for the project? Even Lezgistxa, who write "Here's Lezghin Wikipedia and let write here in Lezgin, OK?", voted neutral, because he understands that without the technical features the project will be quite bad. :(--Soul Train (talk) 10:16, 5 April 2012 (UTC)
I just incorrectly wrote, I mean "temporary sysop", for 3 months. Not "technical".--Soul Train (talk) 10:23, 5 April 2012 (UTC)

1-) Email to Courcelles, I was asking for advice. 2-) Same with Fluffernutter. ~ ⇒TomTomN00 @ 16:32, 9 April 2012 (UTC)
Tomtomn, while I cannot release the contents of your email without your permission (though I'd be happy to post it here for clarity, if you agree to that), it is a blatant falsehood to represent what you sent me as anything other than a request for rollback. Your email stated that you were requesting rollback rights back, and listed two reasons why you thought you should have the right returned. That was the entire contents of the email. No request for advice, simply a request for me to give you back rollback. Fluffernutter (talk) 16:38, 9 April 2012 (UTC)
Just after checking through my sent items, I do remember that one, the advice one is still in the outbox... MS Outlook... ~ ⇒TomTomN00 @ 16:45, 9 April 2012 (UTC)
This is the second time I've had to correct you when you misrepresented your dealings with me. Please, it would make both our lives much easier if you'd just start telling the honest truth, rather than hoping you can slip in your preferred "truth" without me noticing. Fluffernutter (talk) 16:49, 9 April 2012 (UTC)
I don't think you get the point. Making lots of requests for rights is not good, and you still seem to be making them... πr2 (tc) 17:42, 9 April 2012 (UTC)
Both admin characterized the emails you sent not as advice but as request for userrights. As I understand it, you've also sent similar emails to many more admins at the same time. I would advise you not to request userrights for a while. This list was prompted by the recent request on commons, to avoid wasting people's time in researching the matter in future should you request userrights somewhere. As it seems clear from the discussion above and discussions I've had with several admins who you've contacted (only two of which have been listed at their request or self-adding), you were not asking for advice but for userrights, as such I see nothing that needs to be changed to the list, tho of course should you find any inaccuracies you're free to edit the list yourself, it's a wiki page like any other, tho I would strongly advise you against misrepresenting your dealings with people, it doesn't do you any good and it's flat out wrong and against the wiki spirit. Focus on the encyclopedias, userrights will come when you need them. Snowolf How can I help? 08:10, 13 April 2012 (UTC)

Hello Snowolf, with regards to this edit of yours, I was once told that whatismyipaddress.com isn't very reliable. Perhaps a link to https://www.projecthoneypot.org/ (like //www.projecthoneypot.org/ip_{{urlencode:{{{1|}}}}} IP info]) would be better? Kind regards, Mathonius (talk) 12:09, 13 April 2012 (UTC)

My intention w/ whatismyipaddress is to provide geolocation data and ip to hostname, the "proxy" and "static" part is a bit unreliable indeed, but the former two are okey, afaik. Snowolf How can I help? 12:15, 13 April 2012 (UTC)

From what I can see, there's only one page nominated for deletions on the Breton Wikipedia, at [2] which seems dodgy says "user request" but the requestor is a different user. Global rollback[edit]

The following discussion is marked as answered (answered and discussed). If you have a new comment, add it just below the box.

While the number of wikis I edit on is limited, the reason why I'd request this would be to able to do rollbacks on Meta since Meta has no local dedicated rollback permission. Do you think that would be a valid reason?--Jasper Deng (talk) 02:49, 1 May 2012 (UTC)

Hi, I actually wanted to write to you about something else, but to address your question: no, I would not think that a global rollback request with the aim of using it on a single wiki would be appropriate in the framework of the GR policy. The policy specifically suggests that one has to make heavy use of revert functions across multiple wikis "For consideration, users must be demonstrably active in cross-wiki countervandalism or anti-spam activities (for example, as active members of the Small Wiki Monitoring Team) and make heavy use of revert on many wikis". If you necessitate of a rollback tool on metawiki, I would advise you to try and use TWINKLE (you can copy the relevant code from my global.js file, User:Snowolf/global.js) -- it's pretty effective :). I also wanted to poke you about your comments on the global lock request for Japan Football, to let you know that several stewards including myself have access to external tools that allow them to locally block a user on all the wikis they're active on with a single command, and hence the implementation of such a measure is not problematic aside of the obvious implication that there's no automatic block on wikis where the user is not currently registered on and that in doing so we would be blocking the user also on many wikis with established practices and policies, and while it should be within our powers to do so (it is in all effect a Global block implemented in a different manner from a global lock, but a global block nevertheless), it is not routinely used and should be used with great care. These are meant to be general remarks on the matter, and do not address the substance of the issue. Regards, Snowolf How can I help? 02:58, 1 May 2012 (UTC)
  1. I'm not sure how TW works on a wiki it's not designed for.
  2. It's kinda tedious and non-transparent, but there's usually little grey area - either a user is a globally disruptive LTA/spammer or is only locally disruptive.--Jasper Deng (talk) 03:01, 1 May 2012 (UTC)
TW works fine if you use the modified version by PiRSquared17 that I'm using, it works without issues on almost all wikis, tho it only provides you with rollback, not with warnings. The code for inclusion would be:
 // TWINKLE
 importScriptURI('//en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:AzaToth/morebits.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript');
 // try
 importScriptURI('//meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:PiRSquared17/twinkle.js&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript');

Hi Snowolf, can you help me with this?--AeroPsico (talk) 18:28, 27 May 2012 (UTC)

Was drafting a reply earlier, but didn't have time to fact-check it so didn't post it. Basically off the top of my head there were not stewards before that, and rights on eswiki were assigned by local 'crats / devs I think. Logs are incomplete if enwiki is anything to go by (I remember us having a list of these rights on enwiki somewhere). While I my account dates from that era, I did not become significantly active until 2007. I would suggest asking somebody that was already around back then, they would know more about it I think. Hi Snowolf,

Excuse the apparent rudeness you spoke about in your edit summary. I should've chosen my edit summary more carefully, there is no problem with using or copying my documentation, that's completely fine. If at all possible, however, I'd like to keep 2+ steps instructions in one place to avoid duplicated and/or outdated instructions. Having at least a link back to the documentation page would be recommended (since there is more there than just the 3 steps there, such as issue tracking, and maybe some other useful links and pieces of information, and users can check the latest version if something doesn't work as expected). If you prefer to copy those 3 steps into the main document for convenience, please do. –Krinkletalk 13:59, 6 June 2012 (UTC)

Gilaki socks[edit]

The following discussion is marked as answered (handled by Billinghurst). If you have a new comment, add it just below the box.

Hi Snowolf,

With regards to this request, I think something fishy is going on at glk.wikipedia. After the discussion on Meta, two new accounts were created and they voted in support of the admin candidate:

Also suspicious is Saberzadmirza (contr · deleted · block · log · block log · CA · guc · checkuser · lwcheckuser).

I suspect they may be sockpuppets and maybe they should be investigated. On the other hand, I'd rather not interfere with their local issues and even if they are socks there is still enough support for Varg as an admin. What would you advise? Mathonius (talk) 08:54, 11 June 2012 (UTC)

Dear Snowolf. I plead you.[edit]

Hi snowolf. I beg your pardon; I write it using open proxy. I need anonymity. You want to block it, I accept your block. But, I plead with you to read it. Can I ask a favor of you? I feel crisis in kowiki. Although I don’t edit in kowiki, but indiscriminate IP and account block in kowiki is serious, I think. I do not know you perceive recent sockpuppet problem, User:Unypoly. I monitor it; I also agree he must be blocked in kowiki. He changes himself IP, account and then aggravates community troubles. However, now situation is not proper action. Admin in kowiki do block many account with suspicion. Editing pattern is only evidence. Of course, checkuser function is useless, cuz he switches his IP address. But the chance of victim is being increased if the method using. See kowiki blocking logs; ko:special:log/block. Five users are blocked, just one day. I express concern about wrong blocking or victim due to it. In former days, ko:User talk:영동우체국 is suspected. But, he asserts that he is not User:Unypoly. All users in kowiki don’t listen his voice, cuz he uses sockpuppet. However, I think that he wants to proof his innocence, but all users in kowiki don’t listen his mention, he uses sockpuppet. He also requests arbitration request. But, arbitration committee reject it cuz they are sure that he is User:Unypoly. I cannot be assured he is not user:unypoly. But, User:Unypoly can change his IP and accounts. He does not have to arbitration request. Return to topic, I hope that you express concern and worry about it to kowiki admin as a metawiki steward. What do you think about cases? I always concern it. --123.203.4.105 11:36, 20 June 2012 (UTC)

I apologize for the very late reply. I'm not sure I follow, you're trying to do a transwiki import or a XML import? If it's the former as it seems likely, I assume that there might be a problem with the import sources not being configured, that is, to import pages the places to import them from have to be configured first, and this cannot be done by administrators. I don't know what you mean by first box tho, could you, if the problem is persisting, let me know what it says before this first box for example? It would be "interesting" to see the same stats for "old" stewards! Cheers --Herby talk thyme 12:53, 15 December 2012 (UTC)

Indeed it would be, however I have no easy way of generating these stats. With the stewards from this year, I can just use quentin's stats and distribute them over the time period since the 28th february. With stewards previously appointed, I have no easy way of coming up with the number of actions since last reconfirmation :( I could come up with global stats, but I'm not sure that they would have any particular significance and it would involved some additional calculations (mainly to deal with stewards who spent some time without the flag between two appointments). Snowolf How can I help? 12:58, 15 December 2012 (UTC)
At the moment my plan was to keep generating them until the next reconfirmation, then archive them and start with whoever gets elected then, etcetera. Snowolf How can I help? 13:00, 15 December 2012 (UTC)
Yes - fair enough. It is simply that I get used to the pattern of some people's behaviour - they appear around confirmation time, make a few actions and then are not seen again until the following year... It is actually good to see that the "new" ones seem to be actually active mostly. --Herby talk thyme 13:07, 15 December 2012 (UTC)
I might run a one-off batch around confirmation time, as some of the preliminary data I found is... interesting, but no idea how to structure such a format. Quentinv57's tool offers me really great and clean stats (that is, while it doesn't include every logged steward actions, it at least doesn't include non-steward actions as some other tools do) but sadly no time format. Maybe we can try and persuade him to code a "by year" function in it, otherwise I might at least do the stats overall (that is, total number of actions / days in office) even if they're not that significant or manually count stats for the last year for the lower end of the spectrum (that is, stewards under 1 action per day). blocking my IP adress by Snowolf[edit]

The following discussion is marked as answered (exhaustively discussed). If you have a new comment, add it just below the box.

Hi, I wish to know. Why my IP address was blocke on Wikipeadia? --37.190.37.56 22:44, 15 December 2012 (UTC)

You have evaded a lock I placed on your account to stop your crosswiki distruption and edit warring and continued the problematic activity with this IP address. Snowolf How can I help? 22:45, 15 December 2012 (UTC)
I'm sorry, what wrong had did I done? Could You have some time? Could You explain it?
I was editing an article about microsoft poject titled "Windows Essentials" in different language' wikipedia pages. I din't know I had done anything wrong --37.190.37.56 22:53, 15 December 2012 (UTC)
Hi. I believe Mathonius tried to engage with you on nlwiki and only when that appeared to fail I proceeded with the block. The issue is that you are removing content (such as the screenshot on mswiki), spamming several users, improperly capitalizing urls and other things. I have poked Mathonius if he has anything to add. Snowolf How can I help? 22:56, 15 December 2012 (UTC)
I checked out about wrong capitalisation from mrs. Codename Lisa from en-wiki. she told me next:

[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:TheGovernor1 Hello. If you find a link that I broke by accident, please feel free to point me to it. But I double-checked and from where I am standing, it is you who break link by capitalizing them. They do look prettier but stop working in some web browsers which lack autocorrect function. Hyperlinks are arbitrary strings; they should not be beautified. The main problem with your edit is contributing link that are incompatible with MOS:COMPUTING#Website addresses. Your latest edit also violated MOS:PUNCT. (We don't use that kind of punctuation in Wikipedia.)]

Is it true?? I really didn't know this one, I sware! But, as You see, I didn't touch en-wiki after this anymore.

Also, I wanted to fix my wrong editions at other-language wiki, but checked out that I blocked.

Also, I wish to tell You that contributions de user Mathonius in cross-wiki are too aggressive. He reverts actual information I added to too old unactual information (from example, about the last product version and it' release date).

And, I wish to repeat, it's a big news for me about this one that Codename Lisa told me... I wish You will confirm or disprove it (express your opinion about this). Thank You, whaiting! --37.190.37.56 23:08, 15 December 2012 (UTC)

Also, I wish to tell You about deleting intrawiki links to screenshots. I done these actions because of that screenshot is unactual. If the article is about Essentials (started in 2012, september) - Not about Live Essentials it needs to be an actual screenshot to the acrticle.
Besides, I didn't know it's wrong for wiki actions. Nobody told me about this. --37.190.37.56 23:26, 15 December 2012 (UTC)
Why did You delete my edits with help'message to admins of ms-wiki?
Let me see if I follow. a) I reverted your messages spamming like 5-10 people as that is not appropriate, if you wish, contact one admin, not 17 :) b) the main issue above all else is that when somebody reverted your edits, you just kept on going, when somebody else did the same, ditto, etcetera. That is really not how we do things, we try to discuss things if somebody disagree with our edits c) capitalization in URLs doesn't even look prettier, it's bizarre. If you want, I can unlock your account but you have to be careful about these things and try to respond when people point out problems to you not just revert them on and on. Snowolf How can I help? 23:36, 15 December 2012 (UTC)
I don't agree with You that capitalisation isn't buetifull. For wiki readers its not hot or cold. But for wiki contributors it could be more comfortable: don't You agree with me that one of main tasks for wiki contributors is cheking that anybody added any spam in wiki. So it could be more comfortable to check that (for exmple) link "TheOfficialWebsite.Com" that "theofficialwebsite.com".... But, as I understand we must finish this theme because of that (or same) actions could broke links for some category users that using browsers that are not correct automatically these links....
So, let me see if I follow, is this style of reverts when a good main information reverted too - aggressive style?
Yeah, I check out my wrong sides. Thank You for discussion this. I wish you could unblock my IP with account. --37.190.37.56 23:49, 15 December 2012 (UTC)
And I wish also to cantact with you by close channels. Could You tell me your Skype?

Thank You! --37.190.37.56 23:49, 15 December 2012 (UTC)

The domain portion of a URI is case insensitive and should be written in lower-case, both because of convention and because of RFC 1738. Same goes for the host part in the HTTP scheme, see RFC 2616. The rest is actually case sensitive. I'm not sure what you mean by "aggressive style". When one is causing crosswiki distruption on multiple wikis and revert-warring, we tend to react firmly. I'd like to add a thing or two. On the Dutch Wikipedia (nl.wikipedia.org), not only the links and the interwiki's were changed, but also our apostrophe-sign. It is clear that this user lacked the knowledge that is required for editing the Dutch language articles. On top of that, his responses were very bold when it was pointed out to him that several of his changes to interwiki's and links to external sites caused them to stop from functioning, and that he disrupted our language. Excusing himself here by saying no-one told him is reversing the order of things. He did not bother to ask in the first place and when someone told him, his reaction was a rude and denying one. Not the behaviour of someone you would welcome to join your project. If I'm alowed to give some advise: it would be a wise thing for him to do if he would get acquainted with the way wikipedia works on his home-project, before starting to edit cross-wiki, in languages he does not understand. Wikiklaas (talk) 00:05, 16 December 2012 (UTC)
Anybody's allowed to give some advice. In fact, that's very good advice. I'm sure things would go much more smoothly if the user edited a bit on the Russian Wikipedia before moving on to languages he doesn't fully understand. Snowolf How can I help? 00:06, 16 December 2012 (UTC)
  • You are currently unable to edit Wikipedia.

Didn't You unblock anything?
  • I'm talking about this aggressive style: 1, 2 and et. and etc.: reverting main data in article' infobox about actual last date and version of program. Do You think it ok? --TheGovernor1 (talk) 00:17, 16 December 2012 (UTC)
Dear TheGoverner1, did you read my comment above? Wouldn't you think it would be a good idea for you to stop editing cross-wiki, but concentrate on getting to know the way Wikipedia works on you home project? Several users already judged your own edits and your own comments as "aggresive". Please stop complaining and try to find out how you can best cooperate with other users. From the edits you did so far, for example the ones in the interwiki's, it is clear that you lack a basic understanding of the technical stuff you need to know before editing these vital things. Wikiklaas (talk) 00:34, 16 December 2012 (UTC)
And what are the capital letters in URLs for? Even here you wrote http://En.Wikipedia.Org. That sort of thing. --ErikvanB (talk) 00:58, 16 December 2012 (UTC)
Dear Snowolf, I see little improvement. Take a look at this for instance. --ErikvanB (talk) 01:22, 16 December 2012 (UTC)
Yeah at some point you can't keep wasting the time of 5+ people that have to babysit every edit you make because you refuse to familiarize yourself with wikis on languages you know before going crosswiki. User is locked and IP is gblocked and I'm going to try and get some sleep. Snowolf How can I help? 01:33, 16 December 2012 (UTC)
Quite right. Thank you. --ErikvanB (talk) 01:37, 16 December 2012 (UTC)
Hi.
I see there is a mention of me in this discussion, so, I thought perhaps it is in everyone's best interest if I clarified a few things. I reverted TheGoverner1 because his edit had multiple problems:
  1. Broken interwiki links: e.g. fr:Windows Live Essentials was turned into fr:Windows Essentials and el:Πρόγραμμα εγκατάστασης του Windows Live was turned into el:Windows Essentials. At the time of my inspection, neither fr:Windows Essentials nor el:Windows Essentials worked. (Now, they work, but now they are what English Wikipedia regards illegitimate article forks.)
  2. Broken hyperlinks: Some hyperlinks did not work. Some of my colleagues rejected my initial explanation (browser autocorrection) and supplied their own (DNS server, non-standard midway gateway, an overzealous/justified firewall/IDS/IPS, etc.) but the fact remains that some links had stopped working. I think that reason alone warrants a revert.
  3. Violation of en:MOS:PUNCT: English Wikipedia does not use curly quotation; it is a minor issue in its own right but it is coupled with the above.
  4. Violation of en:MOS:COMPUTING on hyperlinks: Again, another minor issue coupled with other issues. Many people do not like redirects. English Wikipedia acknowledges this aversion but does not agree with it. According to MOS:COMPUTING external redirects are fine. They should not be replaced when there are other benefits such as conciseness and print-friendliness attached to them.

or anything else? I was trying to check out, how can I add an ctual information about the program in wikipedia (changing "Windows Live Essentials" to "Windows Essentials" in text, changing technical information to actual official and administrators revert it.) So I checked it out from edministrator, how I could do it if I can't creat new pages with this data (they think it is a double of an existing page. It's nonsense isn't it?)

I wish to check from You these questions if I couldn't do it with administration of wikisource. I wrote, trying to edit my question and chaced out that can't do it. Please, could you tell me?--37.190.37.56 01:45, 16 December 2012 (UTC)

The main reason you were re-blocked was your lack of proficiency in the Wikipedia languages you attempted to edit in addition to resuming the disruption you were originally locked for.--Jasper Deng (talk) 01:47, 16 December 2012 (UTC)
I really don't understand what are you talking about, Mr. Jasper (especially in context aboout my "lack of proficiency in the Wikipedia languages you attempted to edit").
Please, could you tell me, Mr. Snowolf, Mr. Jasper? --37.190.37.56 01:45, 16 December 2012 (UTC)
Mrs Codename Lisa forgot to tell that I didn't do anything (wrong) after I was noticed by her about my wrong actions. --37.190.37.56 12:48, 16 December 2012 (UTC)
Mr. Snowolf, are You here? As You know, I'm not interested in unlocking before I will hear your opinion. So I'm whaiting. --37.190.37.56 15:28, 16 December 2012 (UTC)
Let me try to explain then. "Lack of proficiency" means you obviously do not have the knowledge and/or the skills for the tasks you are trying to do. It showed:
A) when you were editing links. The interwiki's - links in the lower lefthand corner of your screen that enable you to navigate to other wiki's - should not be changed unless the page name in the corresponding wiki is changed (when the page is moved). In that case a bot will correct the situation quite soon and as a rule, there is no need to edit those links by hand. Certainly not if it's your first day of editing and you have no idea of what you are doing. You also edited links by capitalising letters, removing the "www."-part at the beginning or the slash at the end. Codename Lisa gave a thorough explanation why it is undesirable to capitalise parts of links just to make them look better. Removing parts of links means that you put extra load on the server that is connecting you to the page that the link points to. In general: there was no need for you to touch any of the links and every change you made was a bad one. That's called lack of proficiency.
B) when you were editing languages you are not familiar with. Both in the English and the Dutch wikipedia (I did not check the others for this) you added, replaced, or removed punctuation characters. That's a stupid thing to do if you can't speak, read or write the language. You run the risk of changing the meaning of words or the way they are displayed. In this case too, there was absolutely no reason why you should make these changes. Making meaningless or even bad changes is called lack of proficiency.
C) when you engaged with other people on their talk pages. Wikipedia is a project where we try to achieve things in cooperation. One of the skills you need for that is being able to discuss your goals and your errors. You very convincingly demonstrated that you were unable to do so. Engaging in a discussion is not barking at other people what they should do. It starts with stating the problem in a clear manner after which we tend to listen to what others say about it. If you can't do this, then that's called lack of proficiency.
D) when you edited crosswiki on the first day you were registered. You did not take the time to get acquainted with editing on your home project. And if you did so with a different user name, then you did not learn much. Without any basic knowledge, apart from how to handle a keyboard, you started doing your own private things in a worldwide project that's based on cooperation. And when your edits proved to be bad ones and were reverted, you did not ask for help or explanation but stubbornly reverted back. Time and over again. While you should have realised that anyone else on Wikipedia was more experienced than you were and people reverting your edits would have good reasons to do so. That is called lack of proficiency.
One of the effects of your amateurism was that several people had to babysit your every edit, as Snowolf pointed out above. That's wasting other people's time and when you promised to do better but just kept going on with your disruptive editing, that was a good enough reason for locking your account. You may of course be lucky enough to come back with a different user name, some time. My guess is that if you did not learn from this exercise and will still not be able to make valuable contributions in good cooperation, you will in no time be recognised as a pain in the ass for the second time. It is of course a very good recipy for getting locked in record time again. On the other hand, Wikipedia is not about refusing admittance to people who want to contribute. Actually, loads of users, registerd or anonymous ones, join every day without causing problems. They are maybe just a bit more carefull and eager to learn then you were. You could try that strategy when you join next time. Cheers, Wikiklaas (talk) 23:45, 16 December 2012 (UTC)

Richiesta intervento[edit]

The following discussion is marked as answered (I believe things at itwikivoyage have since been solved). If you have a new comment, add it just below the box.

Snowolf How can I help? 22:59, 24 December 2012 (UTC)

The bot will periodically run and copy the new voters to Template:Stewards/Elections 2013/Voters/Check. Once there, they will be listed in the "needs checking" section, you can then validate them there (don't move them from that section tho): the bot will look there when it runs next and copy the confirmations on all the relevant pages! http://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Special:Log/newusers - it seems to be churning away at 2 a minute automatically generated user names from where? over 10,000 in a month - surely that does not equate to the number of previous ed names on wiktravel? and apparently hasnt been checked - any suggestions what is happening... or as to who or what can be done? sats (talk) 14:28, 16 February 2013 (UTC)

Apologies - it seems to have been happening since November the 11th last year which means the autogenerated usernames should number now at 100,000 or so... I realise that like other wikivoyage faux pas of mine that there is probably a quite legitimate explanation of why it is happening - it looks sinister when watched from at least one perspective - maybe it is legit... sats (talk) 15:54, 16 February 2013 (UTC)
indeed - pointed out to me the process is part of http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Unified_login - further apologies for cluttering your talk page sats (talk) 16:18, 16 February 2013 (UTC)
Don't apologize, my talk page is here for people to poke me :D I'm glad to hear you figured out the cause of the issue, indeed, thru global accounts users browsing wikivoyage will have an account automatically created there if they enter the site :) Snowolf How can I help? 18:55, 16 February 2013 (UTC)
sheesh there is the nub of the issue - since the november 11 to now the auto is endless - probably 100,000 + - you are saying if they enter the site, well thats more visits than there are articles, and the auto adder is going non-stop... I was trying to work out where on wikivoyage the phenomenon should be explained to placate those of the more paranoid persuasion - it was my guess that the wikimedia server has been slaving away to catchup... it would be good to get something maybe a bit more specific about things than the unified login help page - to explain what it is and how it works - any thoughts how to have an explanation at wikivoyage that gives a more specific explanation that is sufficient for all the levels of understanding of the average wikivoyager? sats (talk) 01:35, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
It does seem to me that some of the ex-Wikitravel users do not have SUL accounts - for example [4] only shows very few admins and crats. --Rschen7754 01:56, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
I suppose that begs the question then as to whether an encouragement or otherwise to suggest they broader their experiences across wikis, or encourage sul account users to share experiences more - like you 2 folks - to illustrate the benefits of cross wiki usage and watching... sats (talk) 11:08, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
In my opinion, it would be helpful to gain more experience with how Wikimedia sites operate in general. I recently became a crosswiki user and it's been a rather eye-opening experience, but it's not for everyone. Even encouraging people to vote in the steward elections would be helpful - as the stewards serve as the CU/OS of en.wikivoyage. The key is that at least soe should be aware of what is going on in other projects, because they're really not all that different from each other. There's been a bit much "well that won't work for us, because we're Wikivoyage!" when in reality, it works for Wikipedia, Wiktionary, Commons, Meta, Wikidata, Wikisource, etc. In my experiences, whenever a WMF project loses touch with the other projects and looks too far inwardly is when it really goes downhill and starts making major mistakes - a lot of which is happening to my home wiki, the English Wikipedia, right now. --Rschen7754 23:09, 17 February 2013 (UTC)
Sheesh - Its so big (wp en) its hard to know where the pulse is anymore... The internal logic and difference of the operational policy of wikivoyage seems to give the better experienced eds a sense we are different - but that shouldnt keep them from looking outward as well though... sats (talk) 23:44, 17 February 2013 (UTC)

Just curious[edit]

The following discussion is marked as answered (replied). If you have a new comment, add it just below the box.

Greetings Steward.

I was just wondering what brought about that you need to have 600 edits before November 2012 to be able to vote in the Steward Elections? To cut a long story short I looked at Bletilla and since the user is so inactive as to not even answer all of the questions well that says it all really. I wanted to place a vote but seeing that I wasn't eligible was a downer to be honest, i'm not about to argue with concensus so I was just wondering the main reasons for the 600 rule as very little in terms of reasons comes to me. Many thanks. MIVP - (Can I Help?) - (HeadQuarters) 12:05, 26 February 2013 (UTC)

Hmm I assume it's meant to hinder sockpuppet voting, or people making accounts just to vote; however it has been a rule for some years and I am not fully familiar with the history of the election rules, you might want to drop by User talk:DerHexer as he's the old and wise stateman around these parts :) Snowolf How can I help? 10:44, 27 February 2013 (UTC)

Okay i've asked him. Just decided you were the first stop since i've seen you on En Wikipedia and my personal favourite Wiki WikiVoyage plus you were one of the stewards whom elects other stewards, kind of a top rung on the ladder yes? Anyway while i'm here can I ask you something else? Does This seem like a good policy on which to unblock people on? One of the EN WP Admins apparently has done a lot of unblocks per this and a user (ironically under the admin's watch under en:Wikipedia:Adopt-a-user) expressed a concern towards it. [5] I wanted to gain a Steward's opinion on the matter. Could you please give me an idea of your opinion on it? Thank you again. And thanks for giving me the opportunity to practice cross-wiki page linking with this question I suppose. Heh. MIVP - (Can I Help?) - (HeadQuarters) 15:03, 28 February 2013 (UTC)

Some clarifications if I may: election committee members do not elect other stewards, the community does :) We merely help out with the smooth running of the elections and the administrative side of things. Regardless, all stewards are equal and being on the election committee merely means one has volunteered for it :)
You've specifically asked me for an opinion with my steward hat, so I will reply accordingly: all wikis are free to establish local policies dealing with virtually any subject provided it is not in conflict with global policies or WMF Board of Trustees resolutions. It is not for me as a steward to comment on whether a policy is or isn't wise, different wikis have different needs and practices. I also do not think it my place to express any comments on a specific user's application of the policy in question, that is a matter internal to the English Wikipedia and if you have specific complaints about an administrator's action I suggest that you contact them directly and discuss the matter. Snowolf How can I help? 09:41, 3 March 2013 (UTC)
It's not that I personally see a problem in it, I simply wanted to get another opinion on it, so Stewards can't really give an opinion unless it clashes with WMF Policies? Well that's interesting, well anyway thank you kindly for replying with what you could. MIVP - (Can I Help?) - (HeadQuarters) 09:29, 4 March 2013 (UTC)

Oppose reasons[edit]

The following discussion is marked as answered (replied). If you have a new comment, add it just below the box.

Hi Snowolf, and thanks for posting the election results. I wrote some oppose reasons because the bot had stalled, but then it started again and overwrote them! I'm not sure if you want to add them. This, that and the other (talk) 09:03, 28 February 2013 (UTC)

I think that generally the oppose reasons are added after by Pathoschild or some other older statesman of the steward group, I am not very much in favour of how it is done personally, namely that elected stewards have the oppose reasons written, when it's clear that the community doesn't really agree with them or else they wouldn't have been elected. In any case, the oppose reasons are supposed to be written only after the elections are closed. Snowolf How can I help? 09:44, 28 February 2013 (UTC)
OK, well it doesn't actually say that anywhere :) This, that and the other (talk) 10:51, 28 February 2013 (UTC)

Hi. There was a discussion on archiving old non-speedy requests on SRM. Do you think the text you removed should be put in an archive? πr2 (t • c) 12:03, 2 March 2013 (UTC)

Some of those requests should be archived to /dev/null as far as I'm concerned but I have no particular objections to an archive, all I care about/am trying to do is not to have requests from november clogging up the page. Snowolf How can I help? 12:07, 2 March 2013 (UTC)

Greetings Snowolf, I know you are at least somewhat familiar with my past, positive and negative so maybe I can appeal to your good graces. I have asked repeatedly for a global block but some keep insisting I must "earn" it and that global blocks aren't done by request. I don't think we have interacted negatively but perhaps you would be willing? My only other steps are to appeal to the WMF directly or to "earn" a block on enough sites to validate the need for a global. I am also going to send you a separate Email with some additional info I do not want to leave here. Kumioko (talk) 23:20, 2 March 2013 (UTC)

You can make a page about how the sky is pink, but unless you get community approval for it, you can't claim it's a policy, like you falsely and deceptively have. The community can and does make policies. Believe it or not, you *are not* acewiki, and you are not its community. Snowolf How can I help? 11:26, 7 May 2013 (UTC)

Inter-wiki issue[edit]

The following discussion is marked as answered (Issue not related to steward role, user pointed to the correct venues). If you have a new comment, add it just below the box.

Why this inter-wiki issue is neglected by all Stewards? This is growing day by day. :( JKadavoor Jee 16:33, 19 June 2013 (UTC)

Because a) nobody made relevant request to us b) it's not an interwiki issue c) it is far outside of the Stewards purview and role d) Stewards have no particular expertise in commons inclusion or deletion criteria, that's the a field where I would assume commons admins and community members are the experts. I should note as an expanded comment on point b), I fail to see how it is an interwiki issue, especially given if local wikis have some sort of objection to the content being used in articles they can use the local blacklist to stop that, or pass related policies and enforcement. It really, really has nothing to do with us. Snowolf How can I help? 17:34, 19 June 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply. I don't know whether it is an inter-wiki issue; but all I can see is admins in both sides are fighting to protect their interest. It seems Russavia, a crat on Commons is blocked at EN:Wiki. Similarly many admins and Signpost editors in EN:Wiki are blocked at Commons too. Note the message in Tony's talk page in EN:Wiki: "This user strongly encourages editors to upload image, video, and sound files onto the English Wikipedia, and not onto Commons, which has multiple structural and management issues, and a tangle of serious inter-jurisdictional problems. Your files are safer at the English Wikipedia." See this Signpost too.
I'm only a media contributor; not aware/involved in the internal politics of these wikis. So I let people like you to act or neglect. But if these conflicts affect us like the experience of this fellow contributor, we have no other way than simply quit. Here one admin attack that poor user overriding another admin only because he made a request at EN:Wiki which is a place he hates. :( JKadavoor Jee 02:58, 20 June 2013 (UTC)

Bot BoulaurBot on OC wikipedia - WIKIDATA STUBS[edit]

Hi, let the oc wikipedia community decide please. My unapproved bot had more than 40 000 page created not reverted by local community (french commune...) and 200 000 edits.

On wikidata approved bot: 34 000 edits.

The content of the articles is from wikidata using mainly the INFOBOX: a lot of stubs, some with more informations.

PLEASE let the local community decide

Boulaur (talk) 04:50, 23 June 2013 (UTC)

I'm not entirely sure how editcountis assuages one's concerns about the creations of pages void of any information (a 'stub' generally has some information; plenty if not most of your creations contain no information whatsoever). I can't see how any wikimedia project would want or accept empty articles that add significantly to the maintenance work, especially of a fairly small project, and that offer 0 value. I am not sure why on earth you felt you had the right to randomly create 20k worthless pages without previous community approval and bot flag or why you felt this was a useful endeavor to begin with. I'm also not sure why you're dropping me a note here instead of trying to argue as to why these article creations were needed or useful in the discussion taking place on the local wiki itself, which you have obviously read or else wouldn't know I even commented. I suggest that you write there instead, so that the local community and the GS who applied the emergency block can read your arguments. I for one look forward with interest in understanding the rationale behind this, and will try to look at the arguments you will present with an open mind, as I always strive to do. It is genuinely puzzling to me why such creations are undertaken, when no value is added to the encyclopedia and instead the encyclopedia's value is clearly diminished, burying good articles with information in a enormous sea of worthless junk. Again, I would suggest that you make the case for why this junk is needed or useful on the local wiki, so that the local admins, community members and the global user who are looking at this can see it :) Snowolf How can I help? 13:44, 23 June 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for your comments despite you're not agree with me I'm happy to have send back. I will effectively explain these stubs creation on local wiki in occitan language; I will try to provide you a correct transcription of my arguments.

Bot created stubs: Automatic creation of articles (traduccion of local wiki)
Hello,
you had seen (or not) that I create 12 000 articles en 8 days with Wikidata informations.
I think that for our small wikipedia we must create content linked with Wikidata informations because:
  • We are not enough to improve the number of articles,
  • The Wikidata informations are writed, improved and updated with the help of all the wikipedians,
  • A red link give less informations than a minimalist article who give a minima interwikis and is improved without intervention if the Wikidata datas are changed.
Theses stubs creations don't seems to be a good idea for the users dcljr (d), Vogone (SWMT) and Snowolf How can I help? because:
  • A small sampling of these stubs reveals that most are of very little value
If you can look a sample of the created articles and say me if:
  • We can avoid to use Wikidata informations,
  • We must delete the created articles / keep theses articles / create other articles

There's no reason to use this sort of language. I applied an 8 hour block to stop the disruption while I investigated the issue. Hi Snowolf, we've had our first (ever) report of a hijacked account on Wikivoyage, and don't have any procedure in place to deal with it. Is there a Wikimedia policy on how to respond? Thank you for your assistance. --Peter Talk 01:32, 10 July 2013 (UTC)

Hello Peter,
honestly, there really isn't one. A checkuser, if there are edits since the alleged hacking happened, can tell whether it is plausible or not that it took place and any local admin can block the account if they believe it to be compromised based on MO or other indicators.
WMF technical stuff have no practical way of restoring access to hacked accounts, and to the best of my knowledge they routinely decline to act in these situations. Snowolf How can I help? 09:10, 10 July 2013 (UTC)
Hmm, I suppose if the user can provide a sufficient level of proof, I could perform a usermerge to a new account (so they can claim their contributions history). We have a process for that already. I'm surprised to hear that there isn't a way to reclaim one's account, though. If that's the case, what's the point of establishing a committed identity--just to be able to establish that a hijacked account should be blocked? --Peter Talk 16:55, 10 July 2013 (UTC)
Well, that and to establish that the same person has regained control of the account, if that is possible. --Rschen7754 18:11, 10 July 2013 (UTC)

Sorry if I pissed you off at some point. I know it does not help - but I do not recall why. I suspect you were totally justified in being pissed as I can sometimes unintentionally be a cruel debater. Would you mind having a poke at this unblock request. I am not near my normal tools and cannot be sure about the range, though the inkling is west coast US, which would mean that if it is collateral damage that we are likely to need an account with IPBE. — billinghurst sDrewth 03:56, 15 November 2013 (UTC)

Are you okay? PiRSquared17 (talk) 04:44, 17 December 2013 (UTC)

Hello PiR :) I am doing very well, I have however found little time for Wikimedia over the past months and I've decided to trim my userrights to focus on my duties as Steward and IRC-related things, in the hope of regaining an acceptable level of activity there :) Snowolf How can I help? 07:23, 17 December 2013 (UTC)
I'm glad you're staying on as a steward at least :). Life sucks, there are too many other things to do :P Ajraddatz (Talk) 16:22, 17 December 2013 (UTC)

Thank you![edit]

I had already used that silly 'thank' button, but I just wanted to let you know that I appreciate your contributions to the privacy policy discussion. I'm really worried about the proposed policy for various reasons, but I'm unable to express that properly (also for various reasons), so I'm very happy that you've expressed those concerns in such a good way. That's very valuable, and greatly appreciated! Mathonius (talk) 18:20, 17 December 2013 (UTC)

Thank you for your kind words, and I'm glad others share my concerns. I would however suggest that if you can, you voice your own opinion there too: each of us have slightly different concerns, and the more varied and detailed opinions we can offer, the more the WMF is likely to understand why we feel this way. I can't say that I've been very encouraged by the WMF so far, when I initially posted comments on that page I got very discouraging replies from the counsel office. I just wish this process was led by the Community Advocacy team, because it seems to me that the lawyers lack the background in the movement to understand why this policy is so worrying to us, and that maybe people who have been volunteers on Wikimedia would better understand that. Pending request at testwiki[edit]

The following discussion is marked as answered (granted rights). If you have a new comment, add it just below the box.

Hello,

sorry for asking that directly, as it not the standard way, but I thought it was necessary because I don't know how long it will take if I just do nothing but waiting.

I made a request here to get sysop rights on test wiki, and I wish it will be answered (positively, I hope) before my temporary sysop rights on fr-wikinews are revoked.

Could you have a look on it ?

Thank you.

Regards, Dr Brains (talk) 18:25, 24 January 2014 (UTC)

Hello Dr Brains, I generally check on the permission page every now and then, but surely there's no issues with being reminded of requests :) I've gone ahead and granted you the rights there, I see no issues. Thank you for your work on LiveRC which I've personally used and found useful in the past :) Snowolf How can I help? 18:37, 24 January 2014 (UTC)
Wow, that is a fast answer!
Thank you very much.

Withdrawn[edit]

Hi. In this regard, I would say that it was such an experience before. Sincerely, --►Cekli829 19:59, 26 January 2014 (UTC)

To do so was wrong then and it is wrong now, and the user who did so was not a member of the Election Committee. Snowolf How can I help? 20:02, 26 January 2014 (UTC)
Thanks. I understand. ;) --►Cekli829 21:52, 26 January 2014 (UTC)

About the block 217.129.60.168[edit]

This is the message I received. It can only be solved in Meta!

What I can say, if there is any chance of being unblocked, is that I'll try to be the most accurate possible in what I post, and won't post any controversial information. I didn't mean that Tel Aviv was in Palestine, anyway, I just meant what I said above, but the outcome was indeed controversial. Nupest 1:58, 30 January 2014.

The Tel Aviv stuff is completely out of discussion in your block. All your active accounts have been blocked because they were created by the same person (i.e you) that had been previously blocked for vandalism.--Jetstreamer Talk 02:12, 30 January 2014 (UTC)

Again, your account is locked across all projects. The only place to appeal the lock is on meta (here).--Jezebel'sPonyobons mots 02:22, 30 January 2014 (UTC)

Q re GS[edit]

Say stewards are not supposed to do the kind of edit we discussed yesterday; my question is, are global sysops expected/allowed to do such moves? I think it falls in their "routine maintenance" role. Do you agree? ~ DanielTom (talk) 22:02, 22 February 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for your very insightful reply. ~ DanielTom (talk) 10:47, 25 February 2014 (UTC)
I'm pretty horrible for timely replying to talk page request, I compose a reply, then have to close all tabs because Pale Moon got up to 268 tabs and is struggling and then forget to reply. I'm sorry I did not reply earlier: I don't know. Generally speaking global sysops are mainly around for speedy deletions, countervandalism and antispamming on wikis where local admins are not often (or ever) available to do so. I do not know (but I could be simply ignorant of such a situation) of a wiki where global sysops act as fully local admins, dealing with content issues and the like. To me that is a bit far of what global sysops were created for. I suggest that the situation is better solved by setting up quotes of the day in batches, week in advance. Snowolf How can I help? 21:42, 26 February 2014 (UTC)
That's okay, thanks for your reply, and apologies for my impatience. ~ DanielTom (talk) 20:56, 27 February 2014 (UTC)
