Filter 300 causing some false positives on the Spanish Wikipedia

See Special:AbuseLog/2962907. A user added a fact about homo sapiens, and this was a Wikipedia education project. Unfortunately, the filter is written in German so I cannot understand it at all. Could you fix this? Thank you. Codename Noreste 🤔 Talk 16:12, 4 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

This was due to several factors (page title, the content and the few edits) that caused the filter to falsely block the edit. Even if such a false positive as in this case is very unlikely, I have changed it a little. 𝐖𝐢𝐤𝐢𝐁𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐫 👤💬 (WikiBayerCatHelper) 15:59, 5 November 2024 (UTC)Reply

Heads-up about a potential sockpuppet

Heya! You recently blocked User:SamiHyyppia on sewiki. They have also edited the same articles from an IP address on smnwiki, where today a new user appeared requesting we translate cryptocurrency articles. I would assume that this new user is another sockpuppet of the original LTA account, although I can't say for sure. - Yupik (talk) 16:21, 21 December 2024 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for quickly reacting to this. I don't seem to be able to nuke their contributions on sewiki and their contributions on hawiki are still active and visible. - Yupik (talk) 16:55, 21 December 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi, Just wanted to thank you for the block and make it clear that Google Translate is not translating the message properly (and I admit it's really hard to translate it). It's basically like calling someone an animal (=doesn't have "conscience"). Or it's a more severe version of calling someone an asozial. Hope that clears it a bit. Thank you again. And happy new year! Amir (talk) 13:01, 1 January 2025 (UTC)Reply

API

Hello WikiBayer, you are using this API in your tool, so I want to ask if you see any issue with caching the results for one week. We currently cache results for 15 hours, but since sysop data doesn’t change much, caching for one week would be better. What do you think? – DreamRimmer 15:09, 18 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

Changes to sysop data are not really relevant for my Tool. Only changes to the deletion requests are relevant for my tool (These are updated every 30 minutes). Whether 2 administrators or 3 are displayed is of secondary importance. It is only about a rough overview in the wiki. therefore 1 week would definitely be sufficient. Theoretically, one month would also be OK. (but here it depends on what else the data is used for). 𝐖𝐢𝐤𝐢𝐁𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐫 👤💬 (WikiBayerCatHelper) 15:18, 18 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thanks to both of you for your suggestions. I will cache the data for one week for now. I also plan to add an endpoint to get the count of active sysops so we can see how many have been active in the past week. It would be great if your tool could display a new column for active sysops. Please let me know if you are interested, and I will provide the endpoint once it's deployed. – DreamRimmer 15:28, 18 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
BTW, where's the documentation for this API? – Phương Linh (T · C · CA · L · B) 15:30, 18 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
It was deployed one month ago and currently has only one endpoint, so there wasn't much to include in the documentation. Although I prepared the doc, I didn't publish it yet because I plan to expand the project and then add proper documentation. – DreamRimmer 15:34, 18 May 2025 (UTC)Reply
IMO 1-2 weeks is ok. – Phương Linh (T · C · CA · L · B) 15:19, 18 May 2025 (UTC)Reply

"Idiotic thanks function use"

Main public logs - Meta

What kind of a cryptic message is this? I can't find anything obvious about this user. Leaderboard (talk) 11:14, 30 June 2025 (UTC)Reply

Some people on Discord clarified that the user was abusing the Thanks feature - apologies. But try not to not include words such as "Idiotic". Leaderboard (talk) 11:19, 30 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
(Edit conflict.) WikiBayer, was using that block summary really necessary? While I know you're not directly calling them an idiot (as has been the issue before), it's still not a very nice tone to use. shb (tc) 11:20, 30 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
@WikiBayer: Relatedly, you have permablocked the user and sitewide from completely editing. Is this user some known vandal / LTA or did you intend to just block them from just sending thanks? – Svārtava (tɕ) 11:27, 30 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
This, is a troll he has more Accounts. 𝐖𝐢𝐤𝐢𝐁𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐫 👤💬 (WikiBayerCatHelper) 12:49, 30 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
@SHB2000I have described the use (action).and that is an accurate description. 𝐖𝐢𝐤𝐢𝐁𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐫 👤💬 (WikiBayerCatHelper) 12:48, 30 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
You can use nicer block summaries like "misuse of thanks function" or "abuse of thanks function" without sounding extremely demeaning. I'm not saying you were wrong, but claiming someone's actions were idiotic directly at them is still very demeaning. Doesn't matter if they have a history of trolling or are an LTA, they still deserve some grounds of decency. //shb (tc) 13:11, 30 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
That, with the previous complaint together – they are not acceptable, at all. Don't do this again. Codename Noreste (talk · contribs) 17:34, 30 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
The “thanks” are arbitrary and only serve to harass. Therefore the “action” is so describable ad the description is definitely related to the action and not to the user.
See for example a small part:

@Codename Noreste The block summery refers only to the actions of the troll and not to the person. See summary "thanks function use" 𝐖𝐢𝐤𝐢𝐁𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐫 👤💬 (WikiBayerCatHelper) 20:57, 30 June 2025 (UTC)Reply
Sigh....you really aren't getting the point, are you? I'm not disagreeing with you about why you blocked them, I'm saying your block summaries are significantly less than idea. //shb (tc) 00:16, 1 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

Yes, they might be annoying. But I believe SHB's or anyone else's point here is using the word 'Idiotic' or other inappropriate words, it's not the first time it happened and got notified on stop doing this. Please refer to en:Wikipedia:Do not insult the vandals & en:WP:DENY, and these block summary are kinda problematic. aqurs 🍧 13:37, 29 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
@Aqurs1
This is a reference to the previous user names and not a insult.I have also blocked other accounts directly with a link. https://sw.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maalum:Zui/~2025-25621-8 𝐖𝐢𝐤𝐢𝐁𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐫 👤💬 (WikiBayerCatHelper) 13:39, 29 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the reply. IMHO just use the word 'LTA' or directly with a link might be better without causing misunderstood or mention appropriate usernames that those vandal are just grabbing attention for it. Happy editing. :) aqurs 🍧 13:45, 29 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
The usernames are horrible; not denying that and please don't get me wrong on that. However, that is still not justification for calling someone a sexual abuser which is a serious accusation to make – I need an explanation for why you thought calling an LTA that with no IRL proof that, which you still have not responded to. //shb (tc) 13:43, 29 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
I didn't write that to portray him as a sexual abuser, but to mention the names of his other accounts. I had not always put a link because I have blocked many accounts on the smartphone mobile. Here it is easier to write only the user name than a link. 𝐖𝐢𝐤𝐢𝐁𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐫 👤💬 (WikiBayerCatHelper) 15:26, 29 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
"I didn't write that to portray him as a sexual abuser" – then what made you think it was a good idea to write "sexual abuser" as the block summary? //shb (tc) 04:04, 30 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
There are also several entries in Metawiki itself where I have linked accounts directly or i wrote "lock evasion". If you are interested in verifiability. [1], [2], [3]. Deletion and restoration of a page

Hi, I was reviewing one of the deletions related to a case and came across this. While the page has since been improved, the original version at the time you restored it was mostly nonsensical and probably should not have been kept. Now that the issue has passed and no further action is needed, I’m just leaving this note to make you aware of the developments. Thanks, BRP ever 11:10, 20 October 2025 (UTC)Reply

User:WikiBayer/AbuseFilter/Search.js

Is there a way to search by action? As in, search for filters that use a specific action? NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh 11:58, 25 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

This is not currently possible. 𝐖𝐢𝐤𝐢𝐁𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐫 👤💬 (WikiBayerCatHelper) 16:37, 25 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

Thanks! NguoiDungKhongDinhDanh 22:09, 26 November 2025 (UTC)Reply

┌─────────────┘
Let me re-explain my use case. I'm interested in filters that use the blockautopromote action. The newly added feature seems to only allow filtering after-the-fact, so I had to query all filters, including disabled and deleted ones, across wikis using the regex [\s\S]*. I noticed a few problems:

  • I enabled cache. The statistics say I queried 11315 filters on 1068 projects in total, but the number of filters in cache is only 8898. For some reason, there is also no cache entry for enwiki. Are these intentional?
  • After querying, I selected blockautopromote from the Filter by actions dropdown. There are only 6 filters using this action, but about 150 more are shown. An observation is that action options are added only if they are present in the results data, so there must be at least one filter using the afbtv5hide action (courtesy of mw:Extension:ArticleFeedbackv5). Yet when I picked it, no results were shown.
  • Filter results (#af-results-list > div) have duplicate IDs of the form filter-<number>. They should perhaps have the project name prepended (for example, enwiki-filter-<number>).
  • During all of this, the tab froze several times. It would be nice to have filtering by action as a precondition as well. The search term should be applied directly to the raw, comma-separated actions.

nvwiki title blacklist issue

Hi WikiBayer. You closed Steward requests/Miscellaneous/2025-12 § Fix title blacklist error on nvwiki but the change you made isn't actually the one I'd requested. I've just tested and confirmed that moving nv:Choyoołʼįįhí:Tamzin/Sandbox to nv:Choyoołʼįįhí:Tamzin/sandbox still runs up against the mixed-Latin/non-Latin rule. That will only be fixed by removing the two lines I requested removing, and for futureproofing I recommend also localizing the namespace names across all rules (the four find-and-replaces I suggested) so that they apply in the intended namespaces. Meanwhile I don't think there's actually any need to make the change you made; all Navajo characters are in the Basic Multilingual Plane. -- Tamzin[cetacean needed] (they|xe|🤷) 13:01, 1 January 2026 (UTC)Reply

Work on nlwiki

Hi WikiBayer, I appreciate your willingness to help on nlwiki but I fear that the knowledge about the Dutch language and knowledge about local policies are not good enough to make the right judgements. You've requested the blockage of a registered account on our request page for anonymous users and reverted a number of good edits/AGF edits. We like to support new users and provide them with the information they need to keep them on the platform. Only a revert without any words on what they did wrong does not help with that. I think it is better to not include nlwiki when you work on vandalism control. Would you consider that and let me know if you have any questions or when you have another idea about the situation? Thanks! 😊 Elphie (they/them) (Talk) 17:47, 18 February 2026 (UTC)Reply

@Elphie I noticed this user because they only added a large number of links. These links/websites are not included in any other WMF project. In my opinion, this is sufficient reason to classify it as “spam,” which is why I provided the justification. (In addition to the NL wiki, there was also a WikiData entry from this user). As you also recognized, this is probably a user who is behind the organization he is promoting. [4] Incidentally, there was also a user from nlwiki who perceived this as link spam.
