Interview 1.

Introduction

The purpose of this interview is to collect needs/requirements for the tool from the project's main stakeholders: volunteers, researchers and institutions at the beginning of the research journey.

The tool is meant to serve volunteers in facilitating their contributions to Wikipedia articles (e.g. monitoring and understanding priorities), researchers in analysing specific subjects, and institutions in communicating what they are doing on Wikipedia and how their content is producing an impact on it.

This is a semi-structured interview: the questions listed below will guide the conversation.

1. You and Wikipedia and the Wikimedia projects

Can you briefly describe your work and how Wikipedia and/or Wikidata are part of it?
How familiar are you with Wikipedia? And with Wikidata?
Could you give an example of a typical task or project where you use either?
What language(s) do you usually use when reading/editing Wikipedia?

2. Evaluating Wikipedia articles

When working with or reading Wikipedia articles, what information helps you judge their quality or completeness?
Are there any metrics or signals you regularly check?

For example: quality, “active articles”, lengths, number of contributors, date of creation, last edited, discussion pages... Your priorities can guide us in determining the tool’s features.

Is there specific information about Wikipedia articles which could facilitate their evaluation and which you cannot access easily?

3. Wikipedia and Climate Change

What are your areas of interest related to climate change?
As a climate change passionate/expert, have you noticed any major gaps or shortcomings in how the topic is covered on Wikipedia?

Have you come across Wikipedia articles in this area that felt incomplete, outdated, or biased?

Is there specific information about the Wikipedia articles which could facilitate their evaluation from your point of view and for your work? What would help you better identify those gaps?

4. Wikipedia and language editions

Do you ever compare articles across different language versions of Wikipedia?

Which ones and why?

If yes, what kind of differences are most important or interesting to you?

For example, coverage, depth, tone, etc.?

Would a tool that shows gaps across language editions be useful in your work? Why or why not?

5. Visualisation tools

Before showing the tool:

Are there any analytical visualization tools or dashboards that you are familiar with and that you find useful for your work?
What works well in those tools? What does not?

During the interview we will show the current prototype and collect feedback and suggestions.

Prototype B: "Wikipedia and the Italian school" has been developed to visualise Wikipedia articles related to the Italian school syllabus. /itwiki-scuola-italiana.toolforge.org

Prototype VIZWP_0: we will integrate and develop the existing two tools to monitor and visualise a set of Wikipedia articles. Here’s its first version, applied to a first set of climate change articles (work is ongoing). Prototype VIZWP_0

How do you feel about AI being used to highlight or prioritize Wikipedia content gaps?
Are there any risks or benefits you would want us to consider?
