#WikiForHumanRights 2025: Justice For Earth and People
AboutRulesTo-do ListGet InvolvedIgbo Community

The 2025 edition of the WikiForHumanRights campaign, themed Justice for Earth and People, calls attention to the urgent need to defend both human dignity and the environment. It is rooted in the belief that the right to live in a safe, healthy, and sustainable environment is a fundamental human right, and one that is especially critical for vulnerable and underrepresented communities.

This year, the Igbo Wikimedians Community will focus on deepening local knowledge around human rights issues that directly affect people in different regions and the world at large, especially as they relate to environmental harm, poverty, hunger, and access to food.

As we experience the growing impact of Environmental pollution, climate disruptions, and Economic inequality, it becomes increasingly important to ensure that communities have access to neutral, reliable information not only to understand their rights but to advocate for themselves and future generations.

The campaign will feature community engagement events such as training sessions, online contributions, and edit-a-thons that will strengthen the visibility of local experiences and traditional knowledge on platforms like Igbo Wikipedia and Igbo Wiktionary. Topics will include:

  • The right to food and water
  • Local food systems and insecurity
  • Human rights in the face of poverty
  • Environmental justice and inequality

In this 2025 WikiForHumanRights Campaign, the Igbo Wikimedians community will engage her members and wider audience to contribute and participate in creating and improving entries related to Human rights, Food security and Environmental justice on the Igbo Wikipedia and Igbo Wiktionary

Topics in Focus

[edit]

Poverty is a state or condition in which one lacks the financial resources and essentials for a certain standard of living. Poverty can have diverse environmental, legal, social, economic, and political causes and effects.

Environmental justice is a social movement that addresses injustice that occurs when poor or marginalized communities are harmed by hazardous waste, resource extraction, and other land uses from which they do not benefit.

Food security is the availability of food in a country (or other geographic region) and the ability of individuals within that country (region) to access, afford, and source adequate foodstuff.
